:00:43. > :00:45.Neil Dalton was a bright, athletic young man with a career in ledicine

:00:46. > :00:50.Today that all came to a tragically premature end.

:00:51. > :00:53.He was one of seven students from Newcastle University who tr`velled

:00:54. > :00:59.to Borneo together to spend a six`week placement at a hospital.

:01:00. > :01:03.This morning, he was stabbed and killed.

:01:04. > :01:07.Malaysian police have said that they were drinking in a tea shop

:01:08. > :01:10.when another man rebuked thdm for being too noisy.

:01:11. > :01:15.This led to an argument and four men pursued the sttdents

:01:16. > :01:18.in a car before one of them attacked them with ` knife.

:01:19. > :01:20.Today, this is how staff and students at Newcastle University

:01:21. > :01:28.They were both excellent sttdents, very committed to their studies

:01:29. > :01:31.They were just doing what thousands of medical students do everx year,

:01:32. > :01:34.they were practising clinic`l medicine in a different setting to

:01:35. > :01:42.learn more and to enhance their practice when they cale back.

:01:43. > :01:53.It might put some students off going to certain places,

:01:54. > :01:59.Here in Ambergate, this small village, his fridnds

:02:00. > :02:02.former schoolmates and formdr team`mates at a local crickdt team

:02:03. > :02:07.One of them simply told us that Neil was the perfect guy ` very talented

:02:08. > :02:24.Next tonight there are calls for the East Midlands' young offenders'

:02:25. > :02:29.jail at Glen Parva to be shtt down after it was declared "unsafe".

:02:30. > :02:32.A Government report says the Leicestershire prison is

:02:33. > :02:35.riddled with a culture of btllying, leading to high levels

:02:36. > :02:43.Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, has this report.

:02:44. > :02:46.The jail that has raised a catalogue of concerns `

:02:47. > :02:48.a sharp rise in assaults and even prisoners being taken hostage.

:02:49. > :02:59.This former inmate told me what happened when he was at Glen Parva.

:03:26. > :03:31.Today's report says Glen Parva was unsafe and has high and increasing

:03:32. > :03:33.levels of violence and bullxing but there was no prison`widd

:03:34. > :03:37.strategy to address the isstes and efforts to challenge perpetrators

:03:38. > :03:52.There were low expectations of the men held there and so they were not

:03:53. > :03:54.being prepared well to leavd the prison and lead law`abiding lives.

:03:55. > :03:57.It is some of the detail th`t makes shocking reading.

:03:58. > :04:02.Prisoners charging other inmates rent.

:04:03. > :04:05.Some prisoners are so scared of being attacked,

:04:06. > :04:13.they are committing offences just to get into solitary confinement.

:04:14. > :04:18.People compare it to Lord of the Flies because that is where young

:04:19. > :04:21.people are basically in charge and are running amok and can be very

:04:22. > :04:29.The Government has been called on to close Glen Parva.

:04:30. > :04:34.We would like a review of the policy, because far too manx end up

:04:35. > :04:37.in prison on remand and thex do not get a prison sentence afterwards.

:04:38. > :04:48.The Prison Service accepts that Glen Parva has been strugglhng to

:04:49. > :04:50.tackle serious challenges, but says those problems are being de`lt with

:04:51. > :05:01.and it has ordered a nation`l review of young offenders centres.

:05:02. > :05:04.Shopkeepers who sell so`called legal highs are being warned

:05:05. > :05:11.Leicestershire Police have joined forces with the county's tr`ding

:05:12. > :05:14.standards officers to crack down on the sales.
