:00:00. > :00:00.That is all from the BBC News at 6.00pm. So goodbye
:00:00. > :00:00.This is East Midlands Today with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.
:00:07. > :00:10.Tonight ` homes looted after a factory burned.
:00:11. > :00:14.This factory blaze forced residents to leave.
:00:15. > :00:18.And they returned, burglars had ransacked their homes.
:00:19. > :00:22.Also tonight, the spiralling cost of road crime has thieves target
:00:23. > :00:31.Plus, lock, stock and starting gun, the big Commonwealth Games sell`off.
:00:32. > :00:34.What you can see is probably about 10%.
:00:35. > :00:36.It is colossal, the biggest furniture removal
:00:37. > :00:42.And the Leicestershire woman aiming to set a new world record
:00:43. > :00:57.Good evening and welcome to the programme.
:00:58. > :01:00.First tonight, residents living opposite the site of a former
:01:01. > :01:06.factory which went up in flames last week have been targeted by burglars.
:01:07. > :01:10.Yes, the residents living on Melton Road in Leicester had to evacuate
:01:11. > :01:17.But whilst they were gone, thieves ransacked their properties.
:01:18. > :01:20.Police say residents could have returned home on Saturday evening
:01:21. > :01:24.They say they had no information to suggest
:01:25. > :01:34.their homes would be vulnerable. Victoria Hicks reports.
:01:35. > :01:44.Dramatic footage from the fire last week. Hundreds of homes were
:01:45. > :01:50.evacuated. The heat was so intense, it melted parts of the buildings of
:01:51. > :01:55.the opposite side of the street. While demolition crews cleared the
:01:56. > :02:16.site on Saturday, residents are facing another blow. They try to
:02:17. > :02:23.break into the window, they managed to get him. They did not too much in
:02:24. > :02:32.the kitchen. The bird around sacked the bedroom upstairs. They left a
:02:33. > :02:41.mess. They went through every drawer and everything. Look at the state of
:02:42. > :02:45.the place. This family?s home was also burgled with money and
:02:46. > :02:50.valuables stolen. While they were there, they realised some valuable
:02:51. > :02:59.jewellery had also been taken. It is gone also. Me and my wife, we were
:03:00. > :03:08.crying. How can it happen, all of this? In three, four days,
:03:09. > :03:14.everything happening. Burglars targeted another family, ransacking
:03:15. > :03:19.jewellery. My mother is old school jewellery. My mother is old
:03:20. > :03:21.Indian, they keep all of their Indian, they keep all of their
:03:22. > :03:24.jewellery hidden between clothes and things like that. They searched
:03:25. > :03:28.through it all. They knew what they were looking for because they left
:03:29. > :03:33.things like all of the silverware, they left that, and all of the ones
:03:34. > :03:37.that are costume jewellery, they bent them and stuff and figured out
:03:38. > :03:42.what was gold and stuff. We have lost family heirlooms, things that
:03:43. > :03:46.would give, thankfully they left my gold chain and that is free good
:03:47. > :03:52.luck, so hopefully, our luck will change.
:03:53. > :03:55.There's been a sharp rise in the cost of rural crime
:03:56. > :03:58.It's the biggest increase in the country.
:03:59. > :04:01.New figures suggest countryside crime in the region is up
:04:02. > :04:05.That's a cost of more than ?6 million.
:04:06. > :04:08.The most common targets are tools, farm machinery and fuel,
:04:09. > :04:21.This is a new door, that they broke when they broke into the shed.
:04:22. > :04:25.It has been a tough year for this farmer.
:04:26. > :04:29.After having his Land Rover stolen, thieves struck again a month later,
:04:30. > :04:32.stealing equipment from his workshop.
:04:33. > :04:36.The total cost of the stolen items was around ?9,000.
:04:37. > :04:39.To start with, there was a lot of ranting, raving and swearing.
:04:40. > :04:47.But you look around and see what has gone and, most of it is replaceable.
:04:48. > :04:54.But having said that, it is very frustrating.
:04:55. > :04:57.Stories like this are becoming more and more common around here, so much
:04:58. > :05:00.so that last year, the East Midlands saw the biggest rise in the cost of
:05:01. > :05:08.Overall, the East Midlands saw a 38% increase
:05:09. > :05:15.in the cost of thefts from farms, a total cost of more than ?6 million.
:05:16. > :05:17.Each county saw a rise, but the figure ranges from 96%
:05:18. > :05:21.in Nottinghamshire and 65% in Leicestershire to just
:05:22. > :05:26.The East Midlands is very close to the central motorway network,
:05:27. > :05:30.so it is very easy for thieves to go onto a farm under cover
:05:31. > :05:35.of darkness, most of the time, and take what they want, get it out
:05:36. > :05:44.I would advise anybody to get on, get vulnerable buildings alarmed
:05:45. > :05:49.and really think hard about where criminals can get in.
:05:50. > :05:52.When they are organised, they will get in anywhere.
:05:53. > :05:54.For now, this farmer hopes he has closed

:06:18. > :06:23.But local residents have formed a campaign group to save
:06:24. > :06:27.I think the sign is a very good idea.
:06:28. > :06:30.We wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment of it.
:06:31. > :06:33.For 450 houses to be built on the buffer zone of the
:06:34. > :06:38.World Heritage Site, I think is an absolute disgrace and with the
:06:39. > :06:42.increase of traffic that will come with those houses, I think this has
:06:43. > :06:52.After the weekend's big storm there's
:06:53. > :07:03.a quieter spell of weather to come. Full forecast coming up.
:07:04. > :07:09.It is the return of the football, the first round above the new season
:07:10. > :07:16.is coming up in the sports news later.
:07:17. > :07:19.Next tonight, a dog has died after being tasered by the police.
:07:20. > :07:21.The dog, thought to be a pit bull terrier, attacked another
:07:22. > :07:24.dog and its owner at Braunston Town in Leicester last night.
:07:25. > :07:27.Today the man's family said he's having surgery to his leg but the
:07:28. > :07:33.Jo Healey is in Braunstone for us now.
:07:34. > :07:55.Good evening, yes, this is the Chase here, and everyone here, Chris takes
:07:56. > :07:59.his dog, a four`year`old Alsatian, for his evening stroll, but last
:08:00. > :08:06.night, a doglike bit bull terrier came from nowhere and started
:08:07. > :08:12.attacking both of them. This dog was muzzled and on a lead, so he could
:08:13. > :08:17.not defend himself, a neighbour came out to help. It was very scary to
:08:18. > :08:21.see. My husband tried to help the gentleman with his dog to try and
:08:22. > :08:26.break up the fight with the two dogs, but unfortunately the dog was
:08:27. > :08:30.being completely attacked, it was too unsafe for the public. All you
:08:31. > :08:36.could do was stand and wait for the professionals to come and do what
:08:37. > :08:44.they do and help. What are the police do? Firearms officers came to
:08:45. > :08:51.the scene, but the dog kept on aggressively attacking both the dog
:08:52. > :08:57.choice but to Tasered the dog. The choice but to Tasered the dog. The
:08:58. > :09:02.dog later died. This is what neighbours had to say. There were
:09:03. > :09:06.three police cars, two dog units are two other vans, an ambulance, I
:09:07. > :09:14.thought, what is going on? What did you see? The White dog hanging off
:09:15. > :09:21.the Alsatian dog, viciously attacking it. The dog, like that,
:09:22. > :09:26.you can pick up and defend him, but in Alsatian, they have to fend for
:09:27. > :09:32.themselves. There should be notices saying that dogs should be kept on a
:09:33. > :09:38.lead. How shocking was this to witness? Very shocking. Chris is in
:09:39. > :09:45.hospital tonight after surgery, what have the family said? The family
:09:46. > :09:50.have said it has been very distressing and continues to be so.
:09:51. > :09:55.Chris had surgery to his knee and to his lower leg where he was bitten.
:09:56. > :10:00.He is in the last Royal Infirmary, he had surgery today but he should
:10:01. > :10:04.be home tomorrow. The dog is OK, he has been admitted to Glenfield
:10:05. > :10:13.veterinary hospital and he's been treated for a bike, and bruising. We
:10:14. > :10:18.heard from the RSPCA, they said that they have concerns about using Taser
:10:19. > :10:22.is and that it has to be that the use is really justified and Chris?s
:10:23. > :10:26.family have said, they said that this would have been so much worse
:10:27. > :10:30.if it has been an elderly are vulnerable person or Eilidh Child.
:10:31. > :10:39.Thank you very much. This afternoon, some of England's
:10:40. > :10:41.top young cricketers have been learning life`saving skills
:10:42. > :10:43.from a Leicestershire charity. The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was
:10:44. > :10:46.set up after 14`year`old Joe died It's warning local sports clubs that
:10:47. > :10:51.it's not enough to just have one coach who knows CPR
:10:52. > :11:06.and that every young player should They are some of the most vital
:11:07. > :11:10.skills that you can learn, often literally the difference between
:11:11. > :11:18.life and death. Today, the England under 19 cricket team were shown how
:11:19. > :11:22.to do CPR and how to use a deliberate later. It has opened my
:11:23. > :11:29.eyes to how crucial time can be. I did not know any of that. It is the
:11:30. > :11:35.crucial thing to learn. I played cricket when I was 18 in the
:11:36. > :11:40.Bradford lead and a coach of mine dropped dead on the pitch, I did not
:11:41. > :11:46.know what to do. It is comforting to know that these young men are now
:11:47. > :11:51.able to save lives. It was organised by the Joel Hunt frees Memorial
:11:52. > :12:00.trust, he was 14 when he died two years ago, a condition that kills 12
:12:01. > :12:05.people every week in the UK. It is not enough for the coach to have CPR
:12:06. > :12:09.skills, we also know that young people need to be able to diagnose
:12:10. > :12:15.the condition is. We think that everybody has a role to play in
:12:16. > :12:20.helping to save someone's life. For every minute that you do not do CPR,
:12:21. > :12:27.the chance of surviving drops by 10% per minute. If you do CPR has a
:12:28. > :12:31.chance of life, without CPR, you are watching somebody died. The trust
:12:32. > :12:36.wants everybody in the county to know these skills. Today?s session
:12:37. > :12:41.with a small step on the journey, but if it helps to save a life, it
:12:42. > :12:45.is well worth it. Loughborough is to become the latest
:12:46. > :12:49.area to join a scheme designed to Leicestershire County Council says
:12:50. > :12:52.that by dimming lights, switching them off in the early
:12:53. > :12:55.hours and, in some cases, turning them off fully, it can save ?900,000
:12:56. > :12:57.and reduce its carbon footprint. So far, around 35,000 lamps
:12:58. > :12:59.in 180 towns and villages have been switched
:13:00. > :13:01.off between midnight It might only be a week
:13:02. > :13:06.since the Commonwealth Games ended but a business in Nottingham now has
:13:07. > :13:10.the task of selling off all the items left behind.
:13:11. > :13:14.The company, leftoversolutions.com, has thousands of pieces
:13:15. > :13:19.of furniture from Glasgow to sell From floor to ceiling,
:13:20. > :13:26.for as far as the eye can see. Here are many of the items used
:13:27. > :13:33.at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. They will now be sold at
:13:34. > :13:38.a fraction of the original price. What you can see here is probably
:13:39. > :13:46.about 10% of the overall stock. It is the biggest furniture removal
:13:47. > :13:52.we have ever done in Scotland. These were in the lounges
:13:53. > :14:01.in the village. The athletes watch television
:14:02. > :14:09.from the stands. We have 30`40
:14:10. > :14:16.of these chairs made in Scotland. It is possible that the Queen sat
:14:17. > :14:25.on this chair. I don't know if you have one
:14:26. > :14:29.of these at home, but we have There are also many chairs
:14:30. > :14:37.and massage tables. If you have got a high ceiling
:14:38. > :14:41.at home, you might want this. There are 15
:14:42. > :14:47.of these umpire chairs for sale. Whether you are looking
:14:48. > :14:49.for a new washing machine, or just a little piece of the
:14:50. > :14:53.Commonwealth Games, all these items Just the type of chair for a nosy
:14:54. > :15:18.neighbour! Still to come ` a record breaking
:15:19. > :15:21.Leicestershire swimmer takes the plunge again. Julie Bradshaw,
:15:22. > :15:22.from Loughborough, already This morning she embarked on another
:15:23. > :15:29.gruelling test of endurance. Time for sport and a great start
:15:30. > :15:31.for nearly all Yes, there were wins for Derby,
:15:32. > :15:37.Forest and a good away point for Notts, but we start at the
:15:38. > :15:41.City Ground because Stuart Pearce's home`coming was the story
:15:42. > :15:43.of the weekend. A sell out crowd and Kirsty Edwards
:15:44. > :16:08.was there to see Pearce walk out to It is fantastic to come back. I love
:16:09. > :16:12.the pressure of the expectation and the pressure on my shoulders of
:16:13. > :16:18.being in charge of this football club. The supporters have shown me
:16:19. > :16:25.great support and loyalty. I plan to repay them, hopefully over time. And
:16:26. > :16:33.new season and a new era begins. He is back. He is the man for the job!
:16:34. > :16:45.The best defender they ever had, have! Forester up against Blackpool
:16:46. > :16:50.side that did not have enough of their best players. The Reds were
:16:51. > :16:55.dominating. Andy Reid?s strike bounced off the woodwork, Antonio
:16:56. > :17:00.was there to fire in on his debut. The chances kept on coming and the
:17:01. > :17:05.Reds doubled their advantage with another summer signing, a great goal
:17:06. > :17:10.from Chris Burke. It was very nice for me to score on my home debut in
:17:11. > :17:15.front of the fans, but more importantly, to get the victory
:17:16. > :17:22.today was very important and in the manner that we did it was nice also.
:17:23. > :17:25.To see the winner was the chairman, he was speaking to reporters in a
:17:26. > :17:36.week where peers had spoken out about this show tee sales of some of
:17:37. > :17:43.the players. We had a kiss and a cuddle in the changing room! I think
:17:44. > :17:45.it has galvanised the relationship between me and the owners which were
:17:46. > :17:49.strong any way. They're straight back
:17:50. > :17:52.into action tonight ` travelling to Carlisle United in
:17:53. > :17:55.the first round of the League Cup. They'll go lifted by a hardworking
:17:56. > :17:58.win over Rotherham on Saturday. Three good points to get
:17:59. > :18:00.the season moving. Derby
:18:01. > :18:02.among the promotion favourites, but that means there will be no
:18:03. > :18:05.surprising opponents this season. Rotherham knew what they were facing
:18:06. > :18:09.when they came to frustrate. They have no problem in this league,
:18:10. > :18:15.they will make it tough So good were Rotherham,
:18:16. > :18:19.the Rams were forced to wait Jeff Hendrix scores
:18:20. > :18:29.for Derby with ten minutes to go! And Derby have their opening goal
:18:30. > :18:32.of the season! People know what we can do,
:18:33. > :18:35.and today they will come and make it hard for us and raise their
:18:36. > :18:39.game, like the end of last year, but we have got to play our own game and
:18:40. > :18:44.be patient and hopefully get going. Derby still needed the goalkeeper to

:19:28. > :19:30.systems throughout the preseason and we believe in the new
:19:31. > :19:33.players that have come in. Delighted that they are all here and I felt
:19:34. > :19:39.today's performance was fantastic. As for Mansfield Town,
:19:40. > :19:42.opening day defeat at Northampton. There wasn't actually
:19:43. > :19:44.a lot to choose between the sides, but a lapse from
:19:45. > :19:48.the corner really cost the Stags. They produced chances of their own
:19:49. > :19:54.but couldn't get the equaliser. In Cricket, yesterday's
:19:55. > :19:57.Royal London Cup action was ruined by the weather, and Derbyshire are
