:00:00. > :00:11.This is East Midlands Today with Maurice Flynn and Anne Davids.

:00:12. > :00:20.for the the drug dealers hiding behind a health food shop.

:00:21. > :00:27.this shop was a front for a factory producing cocaine and amphetamines

:00:28. > :00:30.overnight. And the hunt for the homophobes who beat this wolan

:00:31. > :00:36.unconscious because of her sexuality. I thought scared to go

:00:37. > :00:41.out and I cannot go out of the front door now without freezing and

:00:42. > :00:45.panicking. And council leaddrs say that they want private visits to

:00:46. > :00:52.take over running of Sherwood Forest. And have you heard `bout the

:00:53. > :00:57.ice bucket challenge? We will be showing you what it is all `bout

:00:58. > :00:58.with the BBC critic `` cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew and our

:00:59. > :01:07.very own Kirsty Edwards. First tonight, ten men are jailed

:01:08. > :01:17.for more than 100 years for A Nottinghamshire health food shop

:01:18. > :01:22.was used as a front for the gang to sell millions of pounds

:01:23. > :01:25.worth of cocaine and amphet`mine. Our Social Affairs Correspondent

:01:26. > :01:27.Jeremy Ball is at Jeremy, the judge there said

:01:28. > :01:38.the gang were "peddling misdry" Yes. Very strong words

:01:39. > :01:41.from Judge Sampson this aftdrnoon. He said the men in the dock

:01:42. > :01:46.behind me were trading in "pernicious" drugs that destroyed

:01:47. > :01:52.families and blighted lives. At the heart of it all,

:01:53. > :01:54.this health food shop, at Sutton in Ashfield, in

:01:55. > :01:56.Nottinghamshire, where

:01:57. > :01:57.the gang manufactured amphetamine. Inside the police found

:01:58. > :01:59.this mixing equipment and tubs of sulphuric acid, ready

:02:00. > :02:01.to mix with amphetamine oil. Elsewhere, these drugs were found

:02:02. > :02:04.in three vehicle checks Drugs that were valued by the police

:02:05. > :02:10.at well over ?2 million. And it was one on those finds that

:02:11. > :02:26.prompted detectives, On entering the shop we discovered

:02:27. > :02:28.individual quantities of controlled drugs which were destroyed by

:02:29. > :02:33.pouring them down the drain. The amount of drugs there and rdcovered

:02:34. > :02:38.advised us that the were major players within the drugs ring.

:02:39. > :02:42.Most them come from Derbyshhre and Nottinghamshire.

:02:43. > :02:45.We heard the gang's leader was the man who owned the shop in Sttton.

:02:46. > :02:53.And he's been jailed for 12 years for supplying amphetamines.

:02:54. > :02:56.Donnelly's one of ten men who are beginning prison sentences for

:02:57. > :03:00.Five of them were selling high`grade cocaine.

:03:01. > :03:04.He served in Iraq with the British military.

:03:05. > :03:07.But now he's been jailed for more than 18 years.

:03:08. > :03:17.The judge said these drugs were being distributed nationwidd.

:03:18. > :03:19.And it's latest in a series of regional drugs investigations

:03:20. > :03:25.by detectives from across the East Midlands.

:03:26. > :03:27.Just last week, a legal clerk from Nottingham was jailed

:03:28. > :03:29.for supplying drugs to a gang in Grantham.

:03:30. > :03:34.And three brothers from Derby were jailed for selling heroin

:03:35. > :03:41.that was being supplied by relatives in West Yorkshhre.

:03:42. > :03:44.The Care Quality Commission has taken legal action

:03:45. > :03:46.to stop a care home owner from being able to run

:03:47. > :04:01.The CQC said it had to act puickly after being contacted by

:04:02. > :04:03.Nottinghamshire County Council who had expressed concerns

:04:04. > :04:06.about the welfare of the hole's six residents.

:04:07. > :04:13.The local authority have worked with the people living at the very

:04:14. > :04:16.closely and with their relatives. They moved some people yestdrday. I

:04:17. > :04:20.have been made aware by my colleagues in the local authority

:04:21. > :04:25.that all of those people have been moved to suitable alternative

:04:26. > :04:28.provision that will make sure that their needs are appropriately met.

:04:29. > :04:31.A young woman from Oakham s`ys she fears for her life after behng

:04:32. > :04:33.taunted about her sexuality and then beaten unconscious.

:04:34. > :04:37.Kerry Byrnes, who's gay, was walking home after

:04:38. > :04:41.Kerry says it's had a devastating impact on her life.

:04:42. > :04:45.She's been speaking to our reporter Helen Astle.

:04:46. > :04:54.I headed towards home. That is when I saw two guys walking behind me. I

:04:55. > :05:04.did not think anything of it. Just two more people walking homd. As we

:05:05. > :05:08.got nearer, I had one of thdm say, that is the lesbian. Then I remember

:05:09. > :05:14.a fist in my face and I just hit the ground. And everything after that is

:05:15. > :05:18.just one big blur. These ard dark times for Kerry Byrnes. She was

:05:19. > :05:24.attacked around 1:30am last Sunday. Photographs show her injurids just

:05:25. > :05:28.hours after the assault. Thhs week has been held, it really has. I have

:05:29. > :05:34.not left the house since it happened. All the doors are locked,

:05:35. > :05:42.constantly. It is just fear, at the moment. That they will come back.

:05:43. > :05:48.The police are treating it `s a hate crime. They are urging anyone who

:05:49. > :05:51.saw the attack to come forw`rd. It feels like it was a homophobic

:05:52. > :05:56.attack with the comments th`t were made. They did not steal anxthing. I

:05:57. > :06:01.had my phone and money on md and they did not take anything. If it

:06:02. > :06:06.was a robbery are mugging they would have had everything that I had on

:06:07. > :06:10.me. They did not take anythhng. It was just a comment, and that was

:06:11. > :06:15.when I do four. It has had ` massive impact on my life. I have ndver had

:06:16. > :06:21.anything happened to me likd this before. You just do not expdct

:06:22. > :06:26.homophobic crime in the 21st century. All that I had running

:06:27. > :06:28.through my head at the time was why is this happening to me? Wh`t have I

:06:29. > :06:34.done wrong? You're watching East Midlands Today,

:06:35. > :06:36.lots more to come this Frid`y night. Which isn't just any Friday night,

:06:37. > :06:51.but the start of The pressure is on to delivdr decent

:06:52. > :06:55.weather for the last summer bank holiday. Some mash Max Saturday and

:06:56. > :07:00.Sunday not too bad but the different story on Monday, which will be wet

:07:01. > :07:04.and windy. And if you are escaping that with flights from East Midlands

:07:05. > :07:12.airport, I will have all thd latest on the great bank holiday gdtaway.

:07:13. > :07:15.There are big changes planndd for two of the region's most popular

:07:16. > :07:18.Sherwood Forest Visitors' Cdntre looks set to be run

:07:19. > :07:22.by a private company, under proposals from the county council.

:07:23. > :07:29.And nearby Rufford Abbey park could be run by an independent trtst.

:07:30. > :07:31.The moves are part of measures to ease pressure on council budgets.

:07:32. > :07:37.Our Political Editor John Hdss reports.

:07:38. > :07:45.Tourists visiting Sherwood Forest today. Last year almost 345,000

:07:46. > :07:48.visitors came here. It is rdally lovely. I like it a lot.

:07:49. > :07:53.Nottinghamshire County Council which runs the attractions at that cannot

:07:54. > :07:59.afford the ?300,000 annual cost of keeping it going much longer. It is

:08:00. > :08:03.about improving facilities whilst trying to reduce the cost to the

:08:04. > :08:08.County Council. The council leader wants a private company to do the

:08:09. > :08:11.job instead. It gives us an opportunity to reduce costs whilst

:08:12. > :08:15.at the same time providing the public Nottinghamshire and visitors

:08:16. > :08:21.to the county with a more positive visitor attraction and a good day

:08:22. > :08:24.out. Nearby Rufford Abbey l`st year attracted almost half a million

:08:25. > :08:29.visitors. It is run by the County Council and could end up behng taken

:08:30. > :08:33.over by an independent trust, to take the pressure off counchl

:08:34. > :08:39.budgets. Rufford Abbey is a special place. We need to maintain that

:08:40. > :08:43.Alan Rhodes access these proposals might be controversial. He now has

:08:44. > :08:47.his party and the public to win over. It possibly could be better

:08:48. > :08:52.but we do not want to make ht into a theme park. There are plentx of

:08:53. > :08:57.those. It is better to be n`tural. I think that it needs something. It

:08:58. > :09:03.needs more money putting into it, definitely. The budgets of local

:09:04. > :09:08.councils are not as robust `s the roots of Major Oak, but it hs an

:09:09. > :09:12.indication that the services provided by local authoritids are

:09:13. > :09:16.having to be seriously reconsider. Bradgate Park in Leicestershire has

:09:17. > :09:21.been run as a charitable trtst, and this year, Nottinghamshire County

:09:22. > :09:25.Council handed over the running of a watersports centre to a trust. We're

:09:26. > :09:30.not talking about a sell`off. This is not what it is all about.

:09:31. > :09:34.Sherwood Forest last year gdnerated almost ?3 million, but that is no

:09:35. > :09:37.longer enough to balance thd books at County Hall.

:09:38. > :09:39.The first tram tests have bden carried out

:09:40. > :09:44.on the new bridge over Notthngham Station and into The Meadows.

:09:45. > :09:46.The contractor Taylor Woodrow Alstom says more extensive night thme

:09:47. > :09:48.trials will take place over the coming weeks.

:09:49. > :09:55.After that, passengers can start using the new route.

:09:56. > :09:57.A memorial stone laid for Rhchard the third at Leicester Cathddral

:09:58. > :10:02.It was put in place 32 years ago, but has been taken out

:10:03. > :10:04.as work continues for the Khng's re`internment

:10:05. > :10:15.Today is 529 years since thd Battle of Bosworth.

:10:16. > :10:17.A ?20 million home insulation scheme

:10:18. > :10:20.which was controversially c`ncelled in Nottingham has been rest`rted.

:10:21. > :10:23.More than a thousand homes in Clifton have been insulated

:10:24. > :10:26.already, with another 1,000 expected to follow by next xear

:10:27. > :10:29.But not everyone has been ilpressed by the work,

:10:30. > :10:40.A building side also rise. Homes in Clifton will finally be getting

:10:41. > :10:44.solid wall installation aftdr new government funding was secured

:10:45. > :10:50.through the efforts of local MP Lillian Greenwood. It has bden a

:10:51. > :10:54.real struggle. We had to persuade the government it had a hugd impact

:10:55. > :10:57.on my constituents. I am gl`d that they have come forward with some of

:10:58. > :11:01.the money. We still had to get British Gas to commend them decent

:11:02. > :11:05.deals that was affordable for private residence. The ambitious

:11:06. > :11:10.project was supposed to see council run and private homes in Clhfton

:11:11. > :11:14.received subsidised solid w`ll insulation. It stalled when British

:11:15. > :11:18.Gas withdrew funding due to a change in government policy. The issue was

:11:19. > :11:23.even debated in Parliament. Now the work has resumed. Not everyone is

:11:24. > :11:29.happy with the work from thd contractor. One of the issuds we

:11:30. > :11:32.have is things like this. G`ry Phillips was told the insul`tion

:11:33. > :11:37.would be complete in four wdeks but there is still work to do four

:11:38. > :11:40.months on. The work they ard doing to improve the insulation is

:11:41. > :11:45.fantastic. We are already sdeing the benefits. But the people dohng the

:11:46. > :11:47.work did not seem to supervhse their employees. They are wrecked

:11:48. > :11:53.scaffolding and are not put up ladders. Nobody had any way of

:11:54. > :11:56.getting onto the scaffolding. They were using a barbecue. They had no

:11:57. > :12:00.way of disposing of rubbish which was just left in a big pile on the

:12:01. > :12:06.garden. They were using that pile of rubbish as a toilet. The colpany

:12:07. > :12:09.says it is looking into these concerns. The work around Clifton is

:12:10. > :12:13.expected to be completed by March next year.

:12:14. > :12:17.Waiting for an operation can be a scary prospect, especiallx

:12:18. > :12:23.if you don't know what to expect once it's been done.

:12:24. > :12:24.At Nottingham Children's Hospital,

:12:25. > :12:27.the staff have introduced a new way of making their young patients

:12:28. > :12:35.They're handmade rag dolls and are being used to prepare

:12:36. > :12:56.These rag dolls have been m`de with felt stoma bags on them to help

:12:57. > :13:01.parents and children understand the physical aspects of the condition.

:13:02. > :13:09.They are aware of what the procedure is. It gives them something to

:13:10. > :13:15.relate to. She can do exactly what I did, to the doll, and she c`n then

:13:16. > :13:20.put it all on the doll. Havhng the doll, we can show them stom` care,

:13:21. > :13:25.and we can show it to their parents, and it is called play therapy, to

:13:26. > :13:29.help them prepare. Some children, in having had an emergency and reuse it

:13:30. > :13:30.post operatively to help thdm understand what has happened, as

:13:31. > :13:40.well. bag since he was born, so using

:13:41. > :13:50.the rag dolls has really helped He can show that all his frhends and

:13:51. > :13:52.take it into school and explained what it is. How it works. And how it

:13:53. > :13:55.affects him. by using these dolls, it will help

:13:56. > :14:00.children understand their condition and make the stoma operation

:14:01. > :14:07.a little less frightening. From that idea,

:14:08. > :14:13.to another simple idea that's become Yes,

:14:14. > :14:19.it's reached the East Midlands ` and if you still don't know what it is,

:14:20. > :14:31.you soon will. I'm sure you don't need

:14:32. > :14:34.reminding that it is the Bank Holiday weekend ` and I'm stre many

:14:35. > :14:37.of you are busy doing some last A survey by the AA suggests we here

:14:38. > :14:42.in the East Midlands are the most likely to hit the roads

:14:43. > :14:48.in search of a few days off. Meanwhile, East Midlands Airport

:14:49. > :15:02.says it's expecting 83,000 From the motorway to the departure

:15:03. > :15:06.lounge, this is one of the busiest weekends of the year. At East

:15:07. > :15:10.Midlands airport they are expecting tens of thousands of passengers

:15:11. > :15:19.Whereas you going? We're gohng to Menorca. Looking forward to it? Yes.

:15:20. > :15:23.They have come from far and wide. From South Wales Police Midlands. It

:15:24. > :15:28.is easy and quick to get in and out of and the staff are great. `` to

:15:29. > :15:33.the East Midlands. It is slhghtly cheaper than flying from Manchester

:15:34. > :15:36.which was the nearest airport. The airport says that each year it is

:15:37. > :15:43.seeing more passengers but hn a customer satisfaction survex yet

:15:44. > :15:47.came number 17 out of 35. F`lling in the middle of a survey on ctstomer

:15:48. > :15:50.service is not where we want to be, we want to be better than that, so

:15:51. > :15:53.we are spending ?12 million improving facilities with ndw

:15:54. > :15:58.security lanes, better shops and restaurants, and that means that

:15:59. > :16:03.when all that is ready, the experience will be so much better.

:16:04. > :16:10.What about the experience of getting to the airport? The AA says that 40

:16:11. > :16:14.million drivers will take the roads this weekend. But with smaller

:16:15. > :16:19.airport proving more popular, East Midlands is still set to do rather

:16:20. > :16:25.well. It will be heavy traffic because it is bank holiday. It.

:16:26. > :16:29.`start all the way, but it hs worth it, saving a couple of

:16:30. > :16:32.pounds on flying from a mord local airport. If you are joining the bank

:16:33. > :16:43.holiday getaway, prepare for traffic, and hope that the holiday

:16:44. > :16:51.will all be worth it. And c`lling us some breaking sports news. `` Colin

:16:52. > :16:53.has. Adam Peterson in the 50 metre breaststroke final is at thd

:16:54. > :16:57.European Championship. Lets have a look at the race when something very

:16:58. > :17:03.special happens, when he totches the ball. Here he touches in, and watch

:17:04. > :17:12.the moment when he turns around and realise that he has just broken the

:17:13. > :17:17.world record. Adam Peaty, from Derbyshire, goes absolutely nuts

:17:18. > :17:18.after that performance. Molly Renshaw, another Derbyshire swimmer,

:17:19. > :17:25.won a silver medal. It's another huge

:17:26. > :17:27.weekend for Leicester City. They're getting ready

:17:28. > :17:28.for their first away game It's a nice easy one to start with `

:17:29. > :17:33.a trip to Jose Mourinho's Chelsea. The team who finished third last

:17:34. > :17:55.season and who are so far Leicester City enjoyed a ch`mpagne

:17:56. > :17:58.lifestyle last season. Now, the big boys of the Championship ard getting

:17:59. > :18:04.used to mixing it with the big boys of the Premier League. This is a

:18:05. > :18:08.game that fans will look forward to, but it is a serious business, too.

:18:09. > :18:13.You enjoy sport when you have got the chance of winning. I have never

:18:14. > :18:18.been a big believer in it bding taking part that counts, it is

:18:19. > :18:22.winning that counts, and anxbody who says it isn't is probably not in the

:18:23. > :18:28.right game. He knows that hhs side face a huge task. Chelsea h`ve

:18:29. > :18:33.splashed the cash this summdr. 82 million they have spent so far, on

:18:34. > :18:50.just three players. Leicestdr have paid for just one, ?8 million for

:18:51. > :18:53.the striker, Leonardo Ulloa. We have got some talented footballers, some

:18:54. > :18:58.threats. And they are going to have to be on top of their game. They are

:18:59. > :19:05.champions. They come with that winning mentality from the previous

:19:06. > :19:15.season. They come with high expectations. They managed to give a

:19:16. > :19:19.good game to Everton. It is these kind of games that the playdrs work

:19:20. > :19:22.has so far `` so hard for, last season. They know that they will

:19:23. > :19:27.have to work even harder thhs season. It is important to do well

:19:28. > :19:31.in every game. We have to bd efficient, as a team, this season. I

:19:32. > :19:35.am convinced that we can do well. In the Championship, Derby have a

:19:55. > :20:06.manager's delighted. He is a good player. I know him from

:20:07. > :20:09.the U21 stage. He gives us goals, with his ability, and he is a

:20:10. > :20:13.popular member of this football club.
