:00:38. > :00:46.It is nice to see people do remember him, and the fact he did a lot

:00:47. > :01:01.Over the years, he has done so much, and I think they're fond melories.

:01:02. > :01:03.He always talked about coming to Leicester as

:01:04. > :01:09."coming home", and certainlx he was very generous to the city.

:01:10. > :01:12.His contribution to the arts in Leicester, starting

:01:13. > :01:15.at the Little Theatre but l`ter in life, the Richard Attenborough

:01:16. > :01:23.Richard, for all of his soft exterior,

:01:24. > :01:30.He could be very angry if we didn't get it right.

:01:31. > :01:34.But for all that, he supported, he was committed.

:01:35. > :01:40.For months, Leicester has bden preoccupied with another Richard,

:01:41. > :01:47.But today, the city is mourning the loss of a Lord, but who wanted

:01:48. > :02:00.Richard Attenborough's caredr in film stretched back to the 0940s,

:02:01. > :02:04.From the 1960s, he achieved critical and colmercial

:02:05. > :02:12.Quentin Rayner has been looking back on his life.

:02:13. > :02:15.Born on 29 August 1923, Richard was one of three brothers

:02:16. > :02:20.His father was principal of the University of Leicester, and Richard

:02:21. > :02:28.We went camping, we went to discover new areas around the county and

:02:29. > :02:36.My first girlfriend, I caught in Victoria Park.

:02:37. > :02:38.Young Richard spent much of the childhood down at thd

:02:39. > :02:42.Little Theatre in Leicester, and in 1942, his love of theatre eventually

:02:43. > :02:46.took away from home and to RADA where his career soon took off.

:02:47. > :02:48.Lord Attenborough even used money from one of

:02:49. > :02:51.his feature films to help rdnovate a rundown centre for disabled people

:02:52. > :02:56.at the University of Leicester after a conversation with its founder

:02:57. > :03:02.So I said, "Yes of course I will" ` with my love for Leicester

:03:03. > :03:06.and the University in particular and my family connections and so on

:03:07. > :03:09.And so we decided to try to design and create

:03:10. > :03:12.a centre where people with dvery kind of disability and infirmity

:03:13. > :03:19.And after the tragic death of his daughter and granddatghter

:03:20. > :03:22.in the Boxing Day tsunami, Richard decided to donate

:03:23. > :03:28.his entire Picasso collection to the museum in Leicester.

:03:29. > :03:36.Jane, the daughter, met Picasso and she loved them.

:03:37. > :03:39.So the joy that they had and the joy that they gave ts can be

:03:40. > :03:41.transferred through Jane and Lucy to other people.

:03:42. > :03:46.My life has been blessed, and my life has been phenomdnal and

:03:47. > :03:51.I think I would like those who knew who I was, to say, "Well, I'm glad I

:03:52. > :03:55.met Dick because he was fun and he was kind, and he was caring for

:03:56. > :03:59.other people and he shared his good forttne by

:04:00. > :04:14.Police are appealing for information after a 9`year`old boy slipped

:04:15. > :04:20.Kai Lambe, who was from Hatton in Derbyshire, was rescued by fire

:04:21. > :04:25.The incident happened on Frhday evening near Tutbury Mill

:04:26. > :04:31.His death is not being treated as suspicious.

:04:32. > :04:33.All this week, East Midlands Today will be marking

:04:34. > :04:36.the centenary of the First World War with a series of special reports

:04:37. > :04:46.Typically British bank holiday weather, but in Belgium.

:05:01. > :05:04.Today, we have been speaking to some people from Rutland.

:05:05. > :05:10.We're part of a project looking for the grave of Harry Waters,

:05:11. > :05:12.part of the North Hampshire Regiment, who died as part

:05:13. > :05:17.The project is trying to visit every Rutlander who died in World War I

:05:18. > :05:21.by 2018, wherever they are in the world.

:05:22. > :05:29.Seeing his name on the wall brings it home the

:05:30. > :05:35.So some people from Rutland finding a link with the past.
