:00:00. > :00:08.I'm Anne Davies and tonight a sad day for everyone

:00:09. > :00:17.The Dowager Duchess died today at the age of 94.

:00:18. > :00:19.With an indomitable spirit she's credited with turning Chatsworth

:00:20. > :00:36.into one of Britain's most hmportant tourist attractions Good evdning

:00:37. > :01:05.This and shot dead, two men are under arrest.

:01:06. > :01:09.The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire has died.

:01:10. > :01:11.She was the main public facd of Chatsworth House in Derbxshire

:01:12. > :01:19.for decades. Known to her family as Debo,

:01:20. > :01:22.Deborah Mitford, the youngest of the famous Mitford sisters, married Lord

:01:23. > :01:26.Andrew Cavendish, in 1941 and in 1950 he inherited the title and she

:01:27. > :01:33.became the Duchess of Devonshire. She played a key role in thd

:01:34. > :01:42.restoration of the house and gardens turning the estate into the tourist

:01:43. > :01:45.attraction that it is today. Well,

:01:46. > :01:48.our reporter James Roberson has been talking to people in Derbyshire who

:01:49. > :01:55.witnessed part of that remarkable life, starting with a photographer

:01:56. > :01:56.from Matlock who's 80 next week and worked closely with the

:01:57. > :02:15.Dowager Duchess for half a century. For this man she was part of his

:02:16. > :02:19.life for more than 50 years. As a freelance photographer he covered

:02:20. > :02:25.hundreds of events at Chatsworth house and got to know the Dtchess

:02:26. > :02:30.well. You became friends of the family because they knew thdy could

:02:31. > :02:46.trust you. He covered many of the Duke and Duchess is famous parties

:02:47. > :02:52.including the wedding annivdrsary. It was this indomitable spirit and

:02:53. > :02:56.also the enthusiasm that thd Dodgers put into all things Derbyshhre that

:02:57. > :03:02.the people so appreciated. She would turn up to many of the events she

:03:03. > :03:07.was invited to, would turn tp for local charities and knew wh`t was

:03:08. > :03:13.going on behind the charitids. She always gave time and will bd very

:03:14. > :03:17.sadly missed. It was her close stewardship of the house with her

:03:18. > :03:26.late husband that she will be mostly remembered. It was a great

:03:27. > :03:37.achievement. People were dr`wn not only the public but the people they

:03:38. > :03:42.invited as the house guests. She was one of the personalities of the

:03:43. > :03:49.county. She opened up Chatsworth and encouraged people to come there She

:03:50. > :03:55.always said the people who did the most were Derbyshire people from the

:03:56. > :04:02.region. She was part of the public life of Derbyshire as well `s the

:04:03. > :04:07.Private life of Chatsworth. She was always her own woman. A few people

:04:08. > :04:15.came and said the Roman heads ought not to have tinsel but the Tencel is

:04:16. > :04:20.staying. She was at ease with state occasions as she was relaxed when he

:04:21. > :04:25.photographed her with her grandchildren. I said you c`nnot be

:04:26. > :04:33.a granny and the Duchess, it she said, of course I can. I'm loving my

:04:34. > :04:40.grandchildren. That, to me, was the Duchess of Devonshire. She was

:04:41. > :04:43.lovely. I think everybody bdlieves she really was an incredibld person

:04:44. > :04:48.with an extraordinary life. She really was an amazing woman

:04:49. > :04:51.one of the IT girls of the thirties and forties,

:04:52. > :04:53.someone who had tea with Hitler and even danced with Jack Kdnnedy.

:04:54. > :04:55.Four years ago she spoke at length to James Roberson and

:04:56. > :05:03.here's some of their conversation. My father`in`law died when he was

:05:04. > :05:11.only 55 in 1950 so then we found ourselves in charge not just of this

:05:12. > :05:20.but of his properties. It w`s a tremendous inheritance to ptt it

:05:21. > :05:24.that way but it was also an enormous responsibility. There was no

:05:25. > :05:25.question of us coming to live here because of this

:05:26. > :05:29.question of us coming to live here because of this huge debt and then

:05:30. > :05:35.slowly it was resolved and the land agent said that house needs a family

:05:36. > :05:41.in it, you have got to go and live there. We were very doubtful but we

:05:42. > :05:47.came and we loved it. Looking back over all the time you have been

:05:48. > :05:51.here, is there anything that stands out? Your amazing wonderful parties

:05:52. > :05:58.that you and your husband h`d four major celebrations? That was

:05:59. > :06:03.entirely and drew, you love the party and the whole spectrul of

:06:04. > :06:09.people in Derbyshire. He thought it would be a good idea to ask all the

:06:10. > :06:17.couples who had a golden wedding to tea on the day of our golden wedding

:06:18. > :06:25.so we thought there might bd three or four, 500 possibly. In the end

:06:26. > :06:29.3500 people sat down to tea. It was a wonderful party. In a way it was

:06:30. > :06:36.the best because it was such a surprise. This is one of thd

:06:37. > :06:43.greatest jewels in the East Midlands, does that make yot feel

:06:44. > :06:47.proud? Yes, very. It is verx well for the people at the top to feel

:06:48. > :06:55.proud but it is the people who have done the work who should fedl proud

:06:56. > :07:00.and I they do. The work he was made absolutely wonderful by the support

:07:01. > :07:05.of the staff who are second to none. The luck of living and workhng with

:07:06. > :07:09.all those people is something that will never diminish. That I suppose

:07:10. > :07:14.is the thing I really take `way with me, from the garden to the farms, to

:07:15. > :07:20.the inside of the house, evdrything. They were just amazing. The ones

:07:21. > :07:29.that are still alive became lifelong friends. What a beautiful rdflection

:07:30. > :07:33.of the house in the water there It was the house and county th`t were

:07:34. > :07:35.very close to the heart of the Duchess. When news of her ddath

:07:36. > :08:15.people they were so touched by it. people they were so touched by it.

:08:16. > :08:20.For me it is always impresshve to see these houses. They have been

:08:21. > :08:28.doing a lot of good for a Lord of people, I think everyone loved her.

:08:29. > :08:34.Many here at the farm shop, one of the first of its kind, had `n

:08:35. > :08:40.opinion. When doing things on a mass scale standards sometimes stffer but

:08:41. > :08:48.this was really impressive. She used to come in when we were shopping,

:08:49. > :08:53.with the family. She spent the last couple of years living here on the

:08:54. > :08:57.estate but it is this house and the Chatsworth brand which she helped

:08:58. > :09:09.welled up which will mean the life and works of Deborah Devonshire live

:09:10. > :09:12.on. Now let me introduce yot to the head of marketing here at

:09:13. > :09:22.Chatsworth, it is a sad day, isn't it? Absolutely. We have books of

:09:23. > :09:29.condolence out which people can sign. What about if anybody brings

:09:30. > :09:35.flowers? We would love people to lay flowers down the North front drive

:09:36. > :09:41.of the house. She really st`rted the wave of turning stately homds like

:09:42. > :09:44.this into proper businesses? Absolutely, if she was an

:09:45. > :09:47.inspiration and people really loved to work for her, she was fantastic.

:09:48. > :09:53.A true inspiration. That's it from us here at Chatsworth

:09:54. > :09:56.in Derbyshire. Our thoughts are with

:09:57. > :09:59.the family tonight and with everyone who loved and will miss her.

:10:00. > :10:03.It was a long life and a great life and Deborah Duchess

:10:04. > :10:13.of Devonshire will be remembered for an even longer time to come

:10:14. > :10:16.Back to you in the studio, Dom. Now the rest of the day's ndws.

:10:17. > :10:21.And there's another sign th`t more manufacturing firms in the region

:10:22. > :10:25.are expecting to grow and rdcruit. A survey to be unveiled next week

:10:26. > :10:28.will show a big increase in firms saying business is on the up.

:10:29. > :10:34.It comes as one engineering firm opens a new

:10:35. > :10:42.?5million steel`cutting plant. Mike O'Sullivan reports.

:10:43. > :10:48.The future is looking bright for this engineering company in

:10:49. > :10:54.Nottinghamshire. The managing director told me the companx has

:10:55. > :10:58.invested ?5 million in what they called the cut shack kitted out with

:10:59. > :11:04.state of the art steel cutthng equipment. We will take people on

:11:05. > :11:11.further if the market improves and we saw six apprentices arrive this

:11:12. > :11:18.week. The company now emploxs 2 0 people. They have at healthx order

:11:19. > :11:25.book. A survey by the government's Manufacturing advisory servhce will

:11:26. > :11:33.show that 64% of small firms expect to recruit staff, up 22% on last

:11:34. > :11:44.year. 73% expect to grow ovdr the next three months, up 10%. There is

:11:45. > :11:48.definitely a good future if your company is willing to progrdss you

:11:49. > :11:54.through. I started on the shop floor as a welder and am now a qu`ntity

:11:55. > :12:06.surveyor. Our company has a very strong future. There a grant from

:12:07. > :12:10.the regional growth front. `` fund. We took the view things cannot stay

:12:11. > :12:15.this bad for reversal at sole point we have to make a move and reinvest.

:12:16. > :12:23.That was triggered by the rdgional growth fund. The company st`rted out

:12:24. > :12:24.as a blacksmith in the 1970s. Now they are turning over ?40 mhllion

:12:25. > :12:32.per year. Two men have been arrested

:12:33. > :12:34.on suspicion of the murder of a taxi driver from Nottingham

:12:35. > :12:37.almost twenty years ago. Ethsham Ghafoor was shot de`d while

:12:38. > :12:42.sitting in his cab back in 0994 The motive for his killing

:12:43. > :12:54.has never been discovered. Carolyn Moses reports.

:12:55. > :13:02.Police called it an execution style murder, cold`blooded and

:13:03. > :13:08.premeditated. A taxi driver sitting in his cab shot dead near a

:13:09. > :13:14.children's nationally. That nursery is now a football park and changing

:13:15. > :13:18.rooms but it was here that the man was shot twice in his black and

:13:19. > :13:33.white Ford Sierra almost 20 years ago. He was 26. Please help me. He

:13:34. > :13:43.suffers. My son is gone. Thd family are campaigning and have set up a

:13:44. > :13:49.page online hoping to find `nswers. Now there has been some devdlopment,

:13:50. > :13:55.two men, both in the 40s, arrested this morning. They are being

:13:56. > :13:58.questioned by detectives. Police say this murder case has never been

:13:59. > :14:04.closed, all the years they have continued to search for news and

:14:05. > :14:10.information. It is hoped today's arrests could mean a major step

:14:11. > :14:14.forward towards finding the truth from one of the ADL's most lengthy

:14:15. > :14:25.murders. Legal proceedings have begun against

:14:26. > :14:28.the former leader of Leicestershire County Council over an unpahd debt.

:14:29. > :14:30.The local authority says David Parsons has stopped p`ying

:14:31. > :14:33.monthly instalments to clear the costs of trips he made tsing

:14:34. > :14:35.the council's chauffeur`driven car when he was leader.

:14:36. > :14:38.It will take a fortnight for the courts to process the council's

:14:39. > :14:40.application to recover the loney. East Midlands Trains say a strike by

:14:41. > :14:43.maintenance staff later this month will affect some services. Lanagers

:14:44. > :14:47.say members of the Unite unhon will strike from the 28th of September to

:14:48. > :14:50.the 4th of October, in a dispute over pay. There will be a rdvised

:14:51. > :14:55.timetable, but train companx bosses are pledging to keep most sdrvices

:14:56. > :14:59.running. Labour leader Ed Miliband s`ys our

:15:00. > :15:04.East Midlands cities will gdt new devolved powers over transport, if

:15:05. > :15:08.they win the next general election. So could that mean Nottingh`m's

:15:09. > :15:12.controversial local tax on workplace parking will bd

:15:13. > :15:16.extended to other cities? And what

:15:17. > :15:19.about local tax`raising powdrs? On that

:15:20. > :15:20.the Labour leader's more cattious. Mr Miliband's been speaking to

:15:21. > :15:34.our Political Editor John Hdss. The most important thing is to be

:15:35. > :15:40.led by people and make sure we reverse all the centralisathon we

:15:41. > :15:47.have seen. Too much power ordered at Westminster and not enough devolved

:15:48. > :15:51.throughout England. One thing that is really important is powers over

:15:52. > :15:56.transport spending. All of that spending at the moment is spent in

:15:57. > :16:00.Westminster it should be devolved to regions and sub regions. All of

:16:01. > :16:07.those things are the kind of things that can make a real differdnce to

:16:08. > :16:10.people in the East Midlands. Nottingham is a good exampld where

:16:11. > :16:18.it is building the tram but part of the funding for that has bedn a levy

:16:19. > :16:23.that is a local parks. I am cautious on tax but we should look at all

:16:24. > :16:28.people's ideas. We have alrdady have an agenda to devolved millions of

:16:29. > :16:35.pounds of spending to England away from Westminster. There has been one

:16:36. > :16:38.of the biggest drops in unelployment but recently there were surveys

:16:39. > :16:44.which showed wage rates havd also fallen very low indeed. Is that the

:16:45. > :16:49.inevitable price of economic recovery? I do not think it should

:16:50. > :16:55.be sought. We have announced plans to raise the minimum wage and to

:16:56. > :16:59.build homes again creating jobs in construction, apprenticeships. But

:17:00. > :17:04.we have got to create a decdnt economy with good wages. Thd

:17:05. > :17:12.government says the economy is fixed but I do not believe it is. We all

:17:13. > :17:17.remembered the equal towns plan parts of rural Leicestershire was

:17:18. > :17:22.allocated, it all ended in tears. Isn't that the danger with these big

:17:23. > :17:27.plans for a future Labour government? We cannot go on as we

:17:28. > :17:37.are, how to build in is at hts lowest level since the 1920s. ``

:17:38. > :17:42.house`building. Both my wifd and I will be out on the campaign trail.

:17:43. > :17:48.We are looking forward to it. You're watching East Midlands Today.

:17:49. > :17:50.Still to come: Derbyshire fire service signs up

:17:51. > :17:51.its newest recruit. Dexter the cocker spaniel whll help

:17:52. > :18:00.investigate suspected arson attacks. And I will be investigating the

:18:01. > :18:02.fireball in the sky and finding out how much longer it will be gracing

:18:03. > :18:11.us with its presence. The sport now and here's Natalie.

:18:12. > :18:14.First a big night for Nottingham Forest in the capital.

:18:15. > :18:17.The Reds are unbeaten and top of the league in the Championship.

:18:18. > :18:19.But now it's league cup timd at Tottenham Hotspur.

:18:20. > :18:22.And there really has been some famous cup battles against

:18:23. > :18:23.these two teams in the past. Kirsty Edwards has been rolling

:18:24. > :18:39.back the years with Stuart Pearce. Piers possibly lining up a left foot

:18:40. > :18:51.shot for Forest. He is alwaxs a danger here. What a splendid shot. I

:18:52. > :18:56.think on occasions like that you end up saying that is for fans, that

:18:57. > :19:07.occasion but it is the call of the game because you get beaten. He

:19:08. > :19:12.still has not won the FA Cup. It would be fantastic for us as a

:19:13. > :19:16.football club to deliver at the trophy to Brian Clough. It was a

:19:17. > :19:28.real driving ambition for mxself and the rest of the players to deliver

:19:29. > :19:36.that. It was not to be. While Brian Clough certainly played a htge role

:19:37. > :19:47.in Stuart Pearce's Kadir thd fans have set off with shirts to Wear for

:19:48. > :19:55.the match. The Reds have won three of the games. We are acutelx aware

:19:56. > :20:00.that on paper we will be underdogs but you probably would not want to

:20:01. > :20:04.play a team at the top of the division below doing extremdly well

:20:05. > :20:08.but it is the game we should be relishing and the fans should be

:20:09. > :20:11.enjoying. We will be going to partner in an attempt to win the

:20:12. > :20:17.game and go through to the next round.

:20:18. > :20:21.Well already through to the last 16 are Derby County and thex more

:20:22. > :20:27.than deserved their 2`0 win over fellow Championship side Re`ding.

:20:28. > :20:39.Steve McClaren had made six changes to his side. When he receivdd the

:20:40. > :20:43.ball we were all on the edgd of the seat. It is effective. The

:20:44. > :20:45.ball we were all on the edgd of the seat. It is effective. The

:20:46. > :20:49.breakthrough finally came mhdway through the second half. Thd

:20:50. > :20:54.substitute set up Donny Russell for his first goal of the season. Then

:20:55. > :21:01.this cross hit the reading defender whose own goal secured the win. The

:21:02. > :21:05.draw for the fourth round tonight and McLaren knows full well what it

:21:06. > :21:11.means to progress in the competition. It is one of the

:21:12. > :21:15.greatest moments as a managdr and winning at Cardiff do I know this

:21:16. > :21:22.competition is important to us and we will keep going as far as we can.

:21:23. > :21:26.Rugby and the bad news just keeps on coming for injury hit

:21:27. > :21:28.Leicester Tigers. Scrum`half David Mele's been

:21:29. > :21:32.suspended for a week after his red card in the record defeat at Bath.

:21:33. > :21:35.He was sent off for a stamphng incident and becomes yet another

:21:36. > :21:37.player unavailable this weekend Cricket and three Nottinghalshire

:21:38. > :21:39.players have made England's One day squad for the tour of Sri L`nka

:21:40. > :21:48.James Taylor, Alex Hales and Harry Guernex.

:21:49. > :21:53.In the County championship Derbyshire go into day thred on

:21:54. > :21:58.162`1 against Leicestershird. And well done to the

:21:59. > :22:01.Nottingham Panthers. There brilliant win over Halburg

:22:02. > :22:07.in the Champions League was their first win at the top level

:22:08. > :22:11.of European Hockey. Panthers won 3`1 at the

:22:12. > :22:14.National Ice Centre. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue

:22:15. > :22:16.service has a new recruit to help it solve suspected arson attacks.

:22:17. > :22:18.Senior officers presented Ddxter the Cocker Spaniel puppy with his

:22:19. > :22:24.staff identity badge this morning. Emily Anderson reports.

:22:25. > :22:35.He is the new boy and the l`test any line of fire investigation dogs for

:22:36. > :22:39.the East Midlands. They are to detect things like Excel we're

:22:40. > :22:49.things have been used to help start fires. Before dogs are used in fire

:22:50. > :22:56.scenes, as part of the training they are taught to find tennis

:22:57. > :23:01.balls. We then teaching FP can find petrol he will get his tennhs ball.

:23:02. > :23:05.He likes playing with that `nd searches around quite well `t home.

:23:06. > :23:15.We will just develop that as he grows up. He takes over frol this

:23:16. > :23:20.dog, Freckle, dogs like thel can play a vital role in solving

:23:21. > :23:26.suspected arson attacks and these boots can be an important p`rt of

:23:27. > :23:33.the armoury. This protect hhs feet in a fire scene. He will be given a

:23:34. > :23:35.few months to settle in before he starts training, that is whdn the

:23:36. > :23:47.hard work begins. We have had another decent day

:23:48. > :23:54.today, quite a lot of sunshhne around. We have had high prdssure

:23:55. > :23:58.through today. Perfectly tiled for the daylight hours stopping the

:23:59. > :24:07.cloud from building. It will start to erode tonight allowing some clout

:24:08. > :24:13.to pick up and the these. Not a lot in terms of rain over the ndxt few

:24:14. > :24:21.days or so. It will be mostly dry but cloudy and easy. Things will

:24:22. > :24:31.warn up as we go into the wdekend. `` breezy. It will be mostlx clear

:24:32. > :24:40.on Thursday night allowing temperatures to fall away. ``

:24:41. > :24:45.through tonight. Tomorrow morning will start off dry. The clotd will

:24:46. > :24:50.continue to increase from the north and west as we head through the

:24:51. > :24:53.afternoon. There could be a little light rain or drizzle later on in

:24:54. > :25:00.the day but for most of us ht will be mainly dry. It will feel similar

:25:01. > :25:08.to today with highs of around 1 Celsius. A weather front crossing

:25:09. > :25:10.through on Friday but withott much rain. It is dry and bright `nd

:25:11. > :25:19.warming up towards the weekdnd. That's about all from us

:25:20. > :25:21.on the day when the death w`s announced of the Dowager Duchess
