:01:27. > :01:29.The future is looking bright for Caunton Engineering at Loorgreen

:01:30. > :01:36.The managing director told le the company has invested ?5 million

:01:37. > :01:39.in what they call The Cut Shack kitted out with state`of`thd`art

:01:40. > :01:43.We're already taking on 20 lore people, we will probably be taking

:01:44. > :01:47.on some more if the market hmproves still further, and this week we saw

:01:48. > :01:50.another six apprentices arrhving in our accredited training `cademy.

:01:51. > :01:56.They have a healthy order book at a time when small manufacturers

:01:57. > :02:03.A survey by the government's Manufacturing Advisory Servhce due

:02:04. > :02:06.out next week will show that 64 of small firms expected to recruit

:02:07. > :02:19.And 73% expected to grow in the next six months, up 00%.

:02:26. > :02:28.I started on the shop floor as a fabricator welder, I'm now

:02:29. > :02:33.As it stands, with the improvements that not only our company

:02:34. > :02:44.but the other companies are making, there is a very strong future.

:02:47. > :02:50.Being a family business we take a bit of a longer`term view through

:02:51. > :02:53.We took the view that things can't stay this

:02:54. > :02:57.bad for ever and at some pohnt we have to make a move and reinvest.

:02:58. > :02:59.That was triggered in some part by the Regional Growth Fund,

:03:00. > :03:05.The company started out as a blacksmith's in the village of

:03:06. > :03:14.Now they are turning over ?40 million a year.

:03:15. > :03:16.Earlier this evening I spokd to Stuart Hilton from the

:03:17. > :03:20.Manufacturing Advisory Servhce and began by asking him why companies

:03:21. > :03:30.Our survey told us that a large proportion

:03:31. > :03:35.of businesses have experienced growth over the last six months

:03:36. > :03:37.and a slightly larger proportion are planning and expecting lore

:03:38. > :03:42.That situation has to give them the confidence to recruit ndw staff

:03:43. > :03:44.because they are winning new business and they have more orders

:03:45. > :03:47.to satisfy, and they need more capacity to satisfy that work.

:03:48. > :03:50.Is it also a question of confidence, that firms may have been holding

:03:51. > :03:53.back until they were sure the future is positive?

:03:54. > :03:56.I think they must be, because it is based on

:03:57. > :04:01.They feel they are winning new business and they need to add

:04:02. > :04:05.capacity to satisfy the orders they are winning.

:04:06. > :04:08.The engineering firm we featured in our report,

:04:09. > :04:11.they took advantage of substantially of the Regional Growth Fund.

:04:12. > :04:14.Are other firms you advise taking similar advantage,

:04:15. > :04:21.Other companies are taking advantage, yes, they are,

:04:22. > :04:26.If a company has expansion plans and they are looking to obt`in

:04:27. > :04:29.grant support to help them do that, then I think they need to t`lk to

:04:30. > :04:31.their Local Enterprise Partnership, talk to the

:04:32. > :04:37.Absolutely, talk to us and we can connect them to the right pdople.

:04:38. > :04:45.Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service has a new recruit to help

:04:46. > :04:49.Senior officers presented Ddxter the cocker spaniel puppy with his

:04:50. > :04:59.He is the new boy in the latest in a line of fire investigation dogs

:05:00. > :05:03.What they provide is the expertise and skills to be able

:05:04. > :05:06.to detect accelerants in fires, where things like petrol have been

:05:07. > :05:12.That helps us with our investigation which goes on to be used later

:05:13. > :05:18.Before dogs are used in fires scenes,

:05:19. > :05:21.as part of their training they are taught to find tennis balls.

:05:22. > :05:24.What we then do is turn that reward around and teach him that

:05:25. > :05:27.if he can find petrol he will get his tennis ball.

:05:28. > :05:29.All the signs are good, he's inquisitive, he likes playing

:05:30. > :05:33.with the tennis ball, he's searching round the hotse quite

:05:34. > :05:38.well at home, so fingers crossed we will develop that as he grows up.

:05:39. > :05:41.Dexter takes over from Freckle, who has been used in major crimd scenes,

:05:42. > :05:44.including the fire at the Philpott house in Derby two years ago.

:05:45. > :05:47.Dogs like Dexter can play a vital role in solving suspected arson

:05:48. > :05:54.attacks, and these boots can be an important part of our arloury.

:06:00. > :06:01.Dexter will be given the next few months to settle

:06:02. > :06:11.in before he starts training, and that's when the hard work bdgins.
