:00:09. > :00:15.In five years, seven teaching staff from this region have died from

:00:16. > :00:20.It's just frightening to thhnk children as well as teachers

:00:21. > :00:24.and teaching staff are being exposed to asbestos.

:00:25. > :00:29.Plus, MPs at Westminster debate plans to end children's

:00:30. > :00:37.Plus, as Loughborough's children's festival flies into town yot can

:00:38. > :00:41.probably guess in which book is proving to be a star attraction.

:00:42. > :00:48.We will be talking to the Great British Bake Off contestant,

:00:49. > :01:02.Welcome to Wednesday's programme with Anne Davies and me,

:01:03. > :01:07.First tonight, figures obtahned by East Midlands Today show that

:01:08. > :01:11.seven teaching staff in this region have died from an asbestos-related

:01:12. > :01:16.Asbestos can still be found in the majority of our schools

:01:17. > :01:20.and some of our councils ard now paying out damages to staff exposed

:01:21. > :01:25.The government says it's spdnding billions on improving

:01:26. > :01:28.school buildings to help manage asbestos safely.

:01:29. > :01:35.They kept telling her, what is your pain level out of ten?

:01:36. > :01:38.Bromley Kniveton's wife Jenny, a retired teacher, died aged 72

:01:39. > :01:41.from the asbestos-related ltng cancer from Mesothelioma,

:01:42. > :01:45.The diagnosis had come three years earlier.

:01:46. > :01:57.We'd gone from being OK, to suddenly we weren't.

:01:58. > :01:59.Mr Kniveton says Jenny handled broken asbestos ceiling tilds

:02:00. > :02:05.She worked for two decades at the former Glaisdale

:02:06. > :02:06.Comprehensive School in in Nottingham.

:02:07. > :02:10.He said the City Council made an out-of-court payment to her.

:02:11. > :02:15.Asbestos was used as a building material for decades.

:02:16. > :02:16.The walls are plastic covered asbestos.

:02:17. > :02:21.It is in the vast majority of our older schools stock.

:02:22. > :02:26.But asbestos is still causing concern.

:02:27. > :02:28.Leicestershire County Counchl says they have paid out nearly

:02:29. > :02:32.?30,000 over exposure to asbestos since 2010.

:02:33. > :02:37.For Nottinghamshire County Council, it is nearly ?200,000.

:02:38. > :02:44.Derbyshire County Council s`ys it has paid damages of ?400,000.

:02:45. > :02:48.The Derbyshire figures were uncovered by an asbestos

:02:49. > :02:50.in schools campaigner from London who says the public

:02:51. > :02:56.Lucie Stepehens' mother, Sud, a retired teacher from Devon died

:02:57. > :03:00.I think if we treat people like adults and give people

:03:01. > :03:02.the chance to protect themselves and their childrdn,

:03:03. > :03:04.and for teachers to be safe we probably can make some

:03:05. > :03:08.But hiding it away like a dirty little secret

:03:09. > :03:12.This asbestos support worker in Chesterfield says her te`m has

:03:13. > :03:15.helped around ten teachers in the region who have developed

:03:16. > :03:21.They are now promoting their own interactive computer model

:03:22. > :03:30.75% of schools contain asbestos and it is just frightening

:03:31. > :03:34.to think that children, as well as teachers

:03:35. > :03:38.and teaching staff, are being exposed to asbestos.

:03:39. > :03:39.Jenny's old school is now the self-governing

:03:40. > :03:43.Bluecoat Beechdale Academy which has its own asbestos

:03:44. > :03:47.The academy says some asbestos was removed in a

:03:48. > :03:52.controlled way from a heating duct here as recently as August.

:03:53. > :03:54.But Jenny's husband says the government

:03:55. > :03:58.is putting off action to take out all asbestos from all schools

:03:59. > :04:03.From the government's side, it would take a

:04:04. > :04:06.terrific amount of money to clear it out.

:04:07. > :04:11.It is a problem that is shelved I guess.

:04:12. > :04:17.The Health and Safety Executive says seven people in our region

:04:18. > :04:20.who worked in teaching have died from Mesothelioma cancer

:04:21. > :04:31.She spent her payment on cancer treatment that wasn't

:04:32. > :04:39.Mike, the government is proposing further action on asbestos .

:04:40. > :04:46.Well they published a policx review last year and that outlined a number

:04:47. > :04:53.One of them was to get bettdr evidence of asbestos in schools

:04:54. > :04:59.They also want to increase the scrutiny on the people

:05:00. > :05:01.who have a duty to manage asbestos in their schools.

:05:02. > :05:03.The education secretary Justine Greening was in Derby

:05:04. > :05:20.Overwhelmingly, there are some cases where the advice is it is f`r better

:05:21. > :05:23.to leave the amount that is there. It is the dust that causes the

:05:24. > :05:28.health problems for people. We take our advice from the expert follow

:05:29. > :05:32.that up but as the work we did last year, it gives as a blueprint for

:05:33. > :05:33.working on how to tackle thhs issue and that is what we have bedn

:05:34. > :05:35.getting on with. It all begs the question

:05:36. > :05:38.what risk are pupils at? Well the short answer

:05:39. > :05:40.is that the department for dducation They've looked to the department

:05:41. > :05:47.of health for advice. They say children do

:05:48. > :05:54.have an increased lifetime risk But there's no conclusive evidence

:05:55. > :05:58.for a school setting. Things like air sampling cotld help

:05:59. > :06:01.build up the picture. A cross-party group of MPs have been

:06:02. > :06:05.questioning the government over plans to close the East Midlands

:06:06. > :06:09.specialist children's heart unit. A special debate was held this

:06:10. > :06:12.morning in Westminster over the future of the Glenfield

:06:13. > :06:15.site in Leicester. The NHS says it's not meeting

:06:16. > :06:18.standards or performing But supporters and local

:06:19. > :06:25.politicians disagree. It is also a world centre

:06:26. > :06:28.of excellence and for it to be closed or for any other services

:06:29. > :06:31.to be decreased would be little short of

:06:32. > :06:34.wanton destruction. This is not about cutting

:06:35. > :06:37.costs which isn't an allegation that has been

:06:38. > :06:39.made by anyone in this This is about trying to improve

:06:40. > :06:43.the standards of service for some of the most sick infants

:06:44. > :06:47.and children in the country. Well, this morning's

:06:48. > :06:49.debate was secured by the Leicester West MP,

:06:50. > :06:52.Liz Kendall, who joins us The NHS says that Glenfield is not

:06:53. > :06:58.meeting and is unlikely to meet new standards,

:06:59. > :07:13.so how can it possibly survhve? I don't agree with that at `ll.

:07:14. > :07:17.Independent evidence shows that the clinical outcomes at Glenfidld are

:07:18. > :07:23.amongst the best in the country that is true for survival r`tes for

:07:24. > :07:29.readmission rates. We also have a world leading service and a decision

:07:30. > :07:32.to close the unit at Glenfidld would have a terrible knock-on effect for

:07:33. > :07:37.things like paediatric intensive care. It is untrue to say Glenfield

:07:38. > :07:40.isn't meeting the standards already and is improving services every

:07:41. > :07:45.single month. No one doubts the good work they do

:07:46. > :07:48.but difficult cases have bedn transferred to Birmingham. Hsn't

:07:49. > :07:53.that a signed Glenfield can actually cope?

:07:54. > :07:59.In the last three years onlx four cases have gone to Birmingh`m.

:08:00. > :08:03.Doctors are required to look for second opinions if it is in the best

:08:04. > :08:07.interest of patients but it is wrong to say lots of complex cases are

:08:08. > :08:10.being sound elsewhere. That is one of the issues I raised with the

:08:11. > :08:18.Minister today. In terms of where we are now, the

:08:19. > :08:23.that is the uncertainty causing problems?

:08:24. > :08:28.The unit still provide excellent care. The uncertainty is bad for

:08:29. > :08:32.staff, it is bad for patients and crucially for the families who are

:08:33. > :08:36.already going through a worrying and frightening time. I want to see the

:08:37. > :08:40.government change its mind on this. It makes no sense to close the unit.

:08:41. > :08:44.That would leave the East Mhdlands as the only region in the country

:08:45. > :08:49.without a children's heart surgery unit and could put at risk

:08:50. > :08:51.paediatric intensive care. H will be meeting the minister next month and

:08:52. > :08:55.I will continue to work with MPs across the region who all stpport

:08:56. > :08:56.the case. Thank you very much indeed for

:08:57. > :08:57.joining us. Nottinghamshire police

:08:58. > :09:00.are investigating after a m`n's body An underwater search team w`s called

:09:01. > :09:05.to the Victoria Embankment A passer-by raised the alarl

:09:06. > :09:09.after spotting the man submdrged. Firefighters have returned

:09:10. > :09:14.to the scene of an industri`l blaze in Nottinghamshire that's bden

:09:15. > :09:17.burning for almost a month.T he fire at a unit on Forest Lane in Walesby

:09:18. > :09:22.started in September. Alongside the Environment Agency

:09:23. > :09:25.a decision was made to allow After monitoring the blaze,

:09:26. > :09:29.crews have now returned to extinguish the fire completely

:09:30. > :09:34.and reduce smoke in the are`. The process is expected

:09:35. > :09:41.to last a few days. Still to come - Andrew Smyth

:09:42. > :09:44.from the Great British Bake Off And did he really forget to turn

:09:45. > :09:52.on the oven? A homelessness charity has called

:09:53. > :10:06.off its annual sleep-out, because it's being targeted

:10:07. > :10:09.by a protest group. Framework in Nottingham

:10:10. > :10:12.was expecting hundreds of pdople, for the fundraising event at the end

:10:13. > :10:15.of next month. Our Social Affairs Correspondent,

:10:16. > :10:27.Jeremy Ball, reports. This is one of Nottingham's most

:10:28. > :10:31.high-profile fundraising evdnts It has been running for 15 years. But

:10:32. > :10:36.today framework announced ndxt month's big sleep-out has bden

:10:37. > :10:41.cancelled. Up to three and people were planning to spend the night

:10:42. > :10:46.here in the market. The charity says it has been sabotaged by a protest

:10:47. > :10:49.group that is going to harass people and it couldn't guarantee the safety

:10:50. > :10:55.of the families who were taking part. It follows a row that again a

:10:56. > :10:59.year ago when this camp was set up in Nottingham to highlight rough

:11:00. > :11:03.sleeping. That is criticised by framework who said many of the

:11:04. > :11:08.protesters were not really homeless and by choosing to sleep in tents

:11:09. > :11:13.they risked losing their hotsing. Now activists have responded with

:11:14. > :11:15.this post on social media lodging the big sleep-out fundraisers to

:11:16. > :11:21.hand over their sleeping bags and they warm clothing and mugs. So what

:11:22. > :11:27.they call the real homeless of Nottingham can spend the night in

:11:28. > :11:31.safety. It is a problem bec`use the event must be safe and secure, there

:11:32. > :11:38.are children at the event. But our supporters at the event. We are

:11:39. > :11:41.concerned to protect their safety. But not from physical harm was from

:11:42. > :11:45.psychological harm. Their participation in the event hs to

:11:46. > :11:50.raise money, not to get caught up in a protest.

:11:51. > :11:54.This year's big sleep-out as opposed to pay for more of the outrdach

:11:55. > :11:58.workers and help people sledping rough and framework says it should

:11:59. > :12:00.have raised ?30,000. Money that is desperately needed as more people

:12:01. > :12:06.end up on the streets. From Harry Potter to

:12:07. > :12:08.Little Red Riding Hood, the Loogabarooga Festival

:12:09. > :12:10.in Loughborough is celebrathng Well, one man who's dedicatdd his

:12:11. > :12:13.life to children's stories Today he opened the festival

:12:14. > :12:21.and Geeta Pendse went to medt him. Michael Rosen has been

:12:22. > :12:29.entertaining kids for decadds. Today the former Children's Laureate

:12:30. > :12:33.was the opener at the Loogabarooga With the audience in rapturds

:12:34. > :12:39.I asked what's the secret For me, it'sd a mixture of telling

:12:40. > :12:45.it, so being there and telling it but also writing things

:12:46. > :12:51.that maybe I thought or I would have thought were funny or interdsting

:12:52. > :12:54.when I was a child. When you are on the stage

:12:55. > :12:57.and you are presenting your stories and poems, what is xour

:12:58. > :13:01.favourite part about it? When I do my dad telling

:13:02. > :13:05.us to be quiet and the way he used to do

:13:06. > :13:12.that was to go - "the noise". It sort of get rid of my dad

:13:13. > :13:16.for a brief moment. He gets less big, he

:13:17. > :13:19.isn't a big fierce dad who would shout at is,

:13:20. > :13:22.he becomes somebody, Another star attraction

:13:23. > :13:28.at this year's festival are these sketches produced

:13:29. > :13:30.by the Harry Potter There is even a chance to mdet

:13:31. > :13:36.the animals that inspired one or two With so many books on the m`rket it

:13:37. > :13:43.isn't easy choosing a favourite I like the Demon Dentist

:13:44. > :13:46.from David Wallimas because it is Frankie's Magic Football

:13:47. > :13:49.because they go on adventurds and it feels you were on thd

:13:50. > :13:53.adventure with them. Harry Potter and the

:13:54. > :13:55.Prisoner of Azkaban. They dementors really keep xou

:13:56. > :14:00.on the edge of your seat. Festival organisers will be hoping

:14:01. > :14:04.to keep visitors on the edgd Just a week to go before thd nation

:14:05. > :14:15.learns who has won this year's It's the semi-final tonight

:14:16. > :14:22.and among those vying for a place in the final will be

:14:23. > :14:24.Andrew Smyth from Derby. We'll be talking to him in ` moment,

:14:25. > :14:28.but first a look at the aerospace The 25-year-old actually designs jet

:14:29. > :14:35.engines for Rolls-Royce. Last week, he used his expertise

:14:36. > :14:38.to impress Mary and Paul And his bakes have drawn pldnty

:14:39. > :14:55.of praise from the judges. Lovely flavours, they all go well

:14:56. > :15:03.together. This bench melts hn the mouth. I think you have dond a

:15:04. > :15:08.pretty good job. You have shown as a couple of skills.

:15:09. > :15:18.And he is here! How exciting is this so close to the end. It has been a

:15:19. > :15:23.whirlwind. I can't believe we're nine weeks in already. Therd has

:15:24. > :15:28.been such a long time from when we filmed it when it is going out.

:15:29. > :15:32.Going right to the beginning, how difficult is to picked. I'vd always

:15:33. > :15:36.been a fan of the series and watched it since the first series. H almost

:15:37. > :15:42.apply for the last series btt wimped out at the last moment. This year,

:15:43. > :15:46.friends and family said, yot've got to go for it. I'd heard the together

:15:47. > :15:50.a solid application, practised all my basics and then went frol there.

:15:51. > :15:57.It was a lot of auditions, ` lot of hard work. It has paid off. You are

:15:58. > :16:01.renowned for being precise because you are an engineer at Rolls Royce.

:16:02. > :16:05.How does it work, or how did it work with work? How much time did you

:16:06. > :16:12.spend in the tent? It is mostly done at work -,

:16:13. > :16:15.weekends. My nearest and de`rest, may supervisor and manager with the

:16:16. > :16:19.only ones I could tell. Thex were very understanding and good at

:16:20. > :16:25.keeping it under their hats. Nobody can know you are doing the

:16:26. > :16:29.competition. Absolutely not. It is all top secret. I am ready, MI6

:16:30. > :16:36.application! How stressful is it? Is it hn the

:16:37. > :16:38.editing? Is it worse or the same as it looks?

:16:39. > :16:46.It is more stressful than you see. On the first day when they said

:16:47. > :16:54.ready, set, bake, I almost dxpected the music to start. This is actually

:16:55. > :16:58.quite scary! I started chopping something. It is very intense and

:16:59. > :17:03.very nervy. It was like going into an exam for the first time.

:17:04. > :17:06.Very exciting. Did you really forget to turn the other non-ques-lac there

:17:07. > :17:10.was a crisis when you didn't turn it on.

:17:11. > :17:14.I have got a tough time for not turning it on. I turned it on and

:17:15. > :17:18.when I was trying to change the temperature, they are fancy overs

:17:19. > :17:21.and they had the wrong button. I turned it off by accident. H didn't

:17:22. > :17:25.spot it. I know you can't tell is wh`t

:17:26. > :17:31.happened but has it changed your life?

:17:32. > :17:34.The fame if nothing else. It is interesting being recognised on the

:17:35. > :17:40.street. I am getting used to that. The ginger hair probably helps! In

:17:41. > :17:45.terms of next year, I'm intdrested to see what kind of opportunities

:17:46. > :17:48.will come from it. I am intdrested to do some baking and science and

:17:49. > :17:54.engineering things. I enjoy face-to-face interaction.

:17:55. > :17:58.We wish you all the best. Wd will be glued this evening and the following

:17:59. > :18:00.week. I don't want to wish xou luck because it is already there.

:18:01. > :18:02.And find out just how well Andrew got on by watching

:18:03. > :18:11.tonight's programme, BBC One at eight o'clock.

:18:12. > :18:14.Everything stops in my housd when Bake Off is on.

:18:15. > :18:17.Still to come this evening , Another honour for paralymphc

:18:18. > :18:20.James was invited back to his old school in

:18:21. > :18:22.Nottinghamshire to officially open their new multi-million

:18:23. > :18:41.Sport time. What a night last night. Incredible night for Leicester city.

:18:42. > :18:43.AC Milan, Paris St Germain, Juventus, Malaga and Leicester City.

:18:44. > :18:46.The only five clubs ever to have won their first three

:18:47. > :18:49.Leicester got their history making hat-trick against FC

:18:50. > :18:56.A win that's close to sealing their place in the last 16.

:18:57. > :19:00.They may be struggling in the Premier League

:19:01. > :19:03.but as Tom Brown reports, the fans and players are loving Europe.

:19:04. > :19:10.If I wanted to be anywhere in the world tonight, where

:19:11. > :19:15.It is like a dream come true really.

:19:16. > :19:18.We may not get another chance so why not give

:19:19. > :19:21.Inconsistent in the league but unstoppable in Europe.

:19:22. > :19:26.Copenhagen the latest team to come from the continent to the

:19:27. > :19:29.King Power couldron and just like Porto last month,

:19:30. > :19:33.The quality of football wasn't always the highest but the

:19:34. > :19:37.Mahrez's deft flick on 40 minutes, Champions

:19:38. > :19:43.So was Leicester's defending, not least in stoppage time

:19:44. > :19:47.when Kasper Schmeichel's brhlliant reflexes secured the win.

:19:48. > :19:50.Leicester are guaranteed to progress at least

:19:51. > :19:53.into the second tier Europa League knockouts.

:19:54. > :19:57.It is good to go in the Europa League.

:19:58. > :19:59.Now we have to go to the Ch`mpions League.

:20:00. > :20:04.Absolutely wonderful, wasn't it, George?

:20:05. > :20:06.He was a mascot as well. What a day.

:20:07. > :20:08.Three wins out of three is fantastic.

:20:09. > :20:21.It is a great start and we need to transfer

:20:22. > :20:25.Believe it or not, Leicester City have more points in their Champions

:20:26. > :20:28.League group than they do in the Premier League.

:20:29. > :20:31.But questions over their dolestic form are well and truly

:20:32. > :20:34.on hold tonight because this was another special evening of Duropean

:20:35. > :20:52.Now, remarkably, Leicester `re just one win away from the last 06.

:20:53. > :20:54.But Copenhagen face sanctions after their fans let off fl`res

:20:55. > :21:00.European football's ruling body UEFA, will deal with the case

:21:01. > :21:05.A couple of disappointing performances last night.

:21:06. > :21:14.A home draw for Derb and defeat for Nottingham Forest.

:21:15. > :21:22.It was a filthy night in Bl`ckburn where forest were playing the next

:21:23. > :21:27.bottom side. They were down 2-0 by half-time. Both goals were scored by

:21:45. > :21:53.injuries and a suspension, this happened right at the death. It was

:21:54. > :21:58.a little better for Derby btt not a lot. Yet again, goals proved hard to

:21:59. > :22:03.come by for both sides. It goalless draw with Bedford. A point that

:22:04. > :22:05.leaves them unbeaten for thd last four games.

:24:10. > :24:16.APPLAUSE He is back.

:24:17. > :24:22.Not as a pupil that has a P`ralympic swimming star. And that the heart of

:24:23. > :24:26.the new building, the sports hall. There is an old barn outsidd that I

:24:27. > :24:31.used to play my sports inside. On a horrible December day, it w`s

:24:32. > :24:35.freezing in there. Somewherd like this would've loved it. You have

:24:36. > :24:40.been watching progress from your parents's house. I come back to see

:24:41. > :24:45.my mum and dad most weekends and have seen the progress of the

:24:46. > :24:49.building. It is much bigger with all the equipment. Quite a few of us

:24:50. > :24:52.aspire to be athletes in future and it is inspirational knowing he came

:24:53. > :24:58.from our school and he made it. It is cool how he has achieved so much.

:24:59. > :25:04.I like doing sports. It is ` privilege to meet him now bdcause he

:25:05. > :25:09.is such an inspiration for the Paralympic swimming side. There is a

:25:10. > :25:12.theatre and new classrooms `s well. We have amazing 21st-centurx

:25:13. > :25:17.facilities which students c`n only love to use. As teachers, wd love to

:25:18. > :25:22.use them too. James contracted polio as a child so what is his mdssage to

:25:23. > :25:26.the children? There is no smooth path to `chieving

:25:27. > :25:31.success or your goals, whatdver they may be. Success has been hard graft

:25:32. > :25:40.but this former pupil has loved it. Great is the athlete and Paralympian

:25:41. > :25:45.still being honoured when they return.

:25:46. > :25:47.It is that time of the evenhng when we find out just how cold it is

:25:48. > :25:56.going to be. It isn't too bad. It has bedn

:25:57. > :26:00.quieter today. We have seen a few showers but the winds are e`sing

:26:01. > :26:04.down so not feeling too bad. We got off to a beautiful start thhs

:26:05. > :26:13.morning. Lots of blue sky. Here is proof from earlier today. It did get

:26:14. > :26:18.a bit greyer. Not a pretty picture. You can see that position on the

:26:19. > :26:22.satellite picture nicely. Hdre is yesterday's weather friend. It kept

:26:23. > :26:27.most of the rain out there, just through as a future was. It gave as

:26:28. > :26:31.a hang back-up cloud. It is still there into tomorrow and perhaps into

:26:32. > :26:34.Friday. Not is not changing with the weather. No pressure in the east,

:26:35. > :26:40.high pressure in the west and that means giving that quiet bit in

:26:41. > :26:43.middle. Again, mostly dry and brighter tomorrow. We should see

:26:44. > :26:48.some breaks in the cloud. The odd isolated shower and the wind

:26:49. > :26:54.remaining light. Not feeling too bad at all. We have got a few showers

:26:55. > :26:59.out there at the moment. Mostly dry for much of the night. Keephng quite

:27:00. > :27:04.a lot of cloud so that'll kdep the temperature is up. We are looking at

:27:05. > :27:10.the minimum of seven or 8 ddgrees. Tomorrow morning at the start off

:27:11. > :27:14.with quite a bit of cloud. Very isolated, very light showers so you

:27:15. > :27:17.will be unlucky if you catch one. There will be breaks in the cloud so

:27:18. > :27:24.we will get some sunny spells coming through. Highs of 30 degrees. The

:27:25. > :27:25.wind continuing to ease down into Friday morning so a chilly `nd foggy

:27:26. > :27:40.start. At 13 degrees. Thank you very much. Had he got a

:27:41. > :27:41.message for the Duchess? Sorry. Cornwall, Cambridge, they are both

:27:42. > :27:53.the same! Hubby can join thhs later. Everyone's living these
