:01:05. > :01:07.in a telephone scam is beginning Jonathan Rivers was the man`ging
:01:08. > :01:14.director of Derby-based publishing A total of ten people have been
:01:15. > :01:21.sentenced for their 500 people complained
:01:22. > :01:25.to Trading Standards, making it one of the biggest
:01:26. > :01:43.cases ever dealt with by The man at the centre of wh`t the
:01:44. > :01:48.court hard were astonishing levels of dishonesty. 55-year-old Jonathan
:01:49. > :01:52.Rivers from Coleshill in Birmingham was the owner of publishing company,
:01:53. > :02:01.Wyvern Media Group, based in Derby. He is believed to have earndd ? .7
:02:02. > :02:05.million between 2007-2012. Tnder his direction, employees focused on cold
:02:06. > :02:08.calling small firms to sell advertising space in its
:02:09. > :02:14.publications, like these, which were poor quality, made up of adverts and
:02:15. > :02:27.Hadlow readerships. Staff mhsled customers into
:02:28. > :02:30.thinking the publications would be promoted at high-profile evdnts or
:02:31. > :02:33.that they'd won awards that they'd need to pay to receive along with
:02:34. > :02:35.the advertising space. Unauthorised withdrawals were also made from
:02:36. > :02:37.customers accounts. Staff in offices around the Midlands and south-west
:02:38. > :02:41.were told to tell lies on an industrial scale. False namds were
:02:42. > :02:46.used, claims about readershhp exaggerated, and a host of companies
:02:47. > :02:49.dissolved and set up again tnder the banner of Wyvern Media Group to make
:02:50. > :02:56.it difficult for customers to complain. This group were qtite
:02:57. > :03:00.callous. They would threaten individuals who made complahnts with
:03:01. > :03:03.legal action. On occasions, they sought to take individuals to the
:03:04. > :03:08.County Court to recover the money they thought they were owed. Between
:03:09. > :03:15.2007-2012, it's estimated the company employed around 250 staff,
:03:16. > :03:22.had around 18,000 customers a year, with an annual turnover of `round ?7
:03:23. > :03:27.million. Over 500 people colplained to trading standards about Wyvern
:03:28. > :03:31.Media Group. One of them was this woman from Shropshire who owned a
:03:32. > :03:37.dog rescue centre and died of lung cancer last year. She lost over
:03:38. > :03:42.?5,000 to the company, whom bombarded her with calls. Hdr
:03:43. > :03:51.treatment was described in court as a feeding frenzy. She couldn't sleep
:03:52. > :03:57.at night. She started smoking more. And she didn't eat properly. She
:03:58. > :04:04.just said she wasn't hungry or. . That could have affected her a lot,
:04:05. > :04:08.and she couldn't sleep. This man described in court as Jonathan
:04:09. > :04:14.Rivers air apparent even cale to the Paterson 's house to demand money.
:04:15. > :04:19.In total, ten people were sdntenced today, all of whom pleaded guilty.
:04:20. > :04:24.Five, including Jonathan Rivers and Basra were given jail terms ranging
:04:25. > :04:30.from six years to 16 months. The remaining five received suspended
:04:31. > :04:34.prison sentences, ranging from two years to three months. They were not
:04:35. > :04:41.happy to talk to the media `s they left court this afternoon btt one of
:04:42. > :04:44.them did apologise for her role I am very sorry, and I regret
:04:45. > :04:47.everything about everything. That is all I can say.
:04:48. > :04:53.What was the reaction to the judge's sentencing?
:04:54. > :05:01.As he sentenced the ten defdndants, the judge said their behaviour was
:05:02. > :05:05.nothing short of a scandal. There was little reaction from thdm as
:05:06. > :05:10.their sentences were read ott, but family and friends were hurled
:05:11. > :05:15.grasping and crying. I spokd to the gentleman whose wife was sc`mmed by
:05:16. > :05:20.one of the media group and H asked whether he thought justice had been

:15:40. > :15:44.they were living in such sqtalor and terror that men had more in common
:15:45. > :15:49.than kept them apart. Also `mongst the plans for the youngest
:15:50. > :15:55.generation to play its part, 14 000 poppy seeds will be planted here by
:15:56. > :16:00.schoolchildren. The idea? To create Nottingham's very own riverside

:23:18. > :23:19.from a warehouse right here in the East Midlands.

:23:23. > :23:24.2,000 workers and this week, at a special exhibition,
:23:25. > :23:26.they've had chance to reconnect and reminisce,
:23:27. > :23:40.If you bought a pair of shods in the 1980s, there is a good chance they
:23:41. > :23:44.came from here. This is British Shoe Corporation's distribution site in
:23:45. > :23:49.Leicester, filmed at its hehght when around 2 million pairs of shoes
:23:50. > :23:57.arrived most weeks, destined for hundreds of high-street stores. The
:23:58. > :24:03.British Shoe Corporation was one of the biggest companies, 2500 people,
:24:04. > :24:08.would work on side. At any one time. The building had a floor arda of 1
:24:09. > :24:13.million square feet, the eqtivalent of 11 to football pitches. Ht was
:24:14. > :24:18.the largest single-storey w`rehouse in Europe. Today, it looks very
