:01:10. > :01:12.on our holidays. Our heath correspondent
:01:13. > :01:14.Rob Sissons is in Derby - he's been talking to people who've
:01:15. > :01:16.finished work for the weekend and are enjoying
:01:17. > :01:19.a night out in the city. This fantastic Christmas display
:01:20. > :01:23.is lighting-up Nuthall in Nottingham and we'll be talking to the man
:01:24. > :01:26.responsible for it. And we've an interview
:01:27. > :01:29.with panto hardy perennials But we start with last
:01:30. > :01:31.minute shopping. Simon Ward is at Leicester's High
:01:32. > :01:33.Cross centre where he's been watching customers pick up
:01:34. > :01:43.the final presents. It is looking good and we are on the
:01:44. > :01:47.bridge overlooking the pedestrianised area. It has been
:01:48. > :01:52.helping down with rain a few minutes ago so that might have amp and some
:01:53. > :01:57.shoppers enthusiasm but experts are quite divided on this. Will sales be
:01:58. > :02:01.up on this time last year or down? Now we have the Black Friday
:02:02. > :02:05.pre-Christmas sales firmly established here in the UK, how much
:02:06. > :02:08.difference could they make? We have been chatting to shoppers here and
:02:09. > :02:15.they seem to be getting what they want. We're going round and round
:02:16. > :02:18.trying to nick sure we get everything we want. We don't want to
:02:19. > :02:22.go out tomorrow because it will be really busy tomorrow so hopefully we
:02:23. > :02:25.will get everything today. We normally do it on Christmas Eve but
:02:26. > :02:32.we decided a day early this year. We've just about got everything.
:02:33. > :02:41.Lots of places have been quite cheap. You are from Poland, are you
:02:42. > :02:44.going to stay you? Mostly I am in Europe and this is the first time I
:02:45. > :02:56.am in England and I will stay for more. It is busy all the time. The
:02:57. > :03:02.other party afterwards. Going quick in and out. Normally not this quick.
:03:03. > :03:08.We got money lots of gifts. It's really busy. I didn't think it would
:03:09. > :03:14.be this busy. We've found everything she wants. Did you spend in the
:03:15. > :03:23.pre-Christmas sales? A bit of both. I come to town quite a lot. It seems
:03:24. > :03:29.very busy here at the shopping centre but let's get some details on
:03:30. > :03:31.that. Joe is the manager. What about football, you have some cult leaders
:03:32. > :03:38.to work out how many people are coming? We have, we have an app now
:03:39. > :03:45.so we have instant, accurate results. Today so far we have had
:03:46. > :03:49.over 80,000 visitors and hopefully another 5,000 still to come in. Is
:03:50. > :03:53.that up on previous years? It is and we need to remember that this week
:03:54. > :03:57.is a longer week leading into Christmas as well so we benefit from
:03:58. > :04:02.that clearly because from when the schools broke up until Christmas
:04:03. > :04:05.Eve, there's that longer period so families can come out and shop
:04:06. > :04:10.together, which is really nice to see. We have the pre-Christmas
:04:11. > :04:15.sales, the Black Friday sales, how much difference does that make? It
:04:16. > :04:23.has changed the way that Christmas shopping and trends happen. What we
:04:24. > :04:30.find is, Black Friday tends to land -- last about ten days. Then we find
:04:31. > :04:36.that there is a dip and you go into that panic mode and then pick up
:04:37. > :04:41.again. It is all spread out? Yes, very different now. It is Saturday
:04:42. > :04:45.tomorrow so there is expected to be lots of sales across the region in
:04:46. > :04:48.places like this and they are open here tonight until 10pm if you still
:04:49. > :04:50.want to keep shopping. Staying with shopping -
:04:51. > :04:52.and trading standards officers here are warning us not to be
:04:53. > :04:55.tempted by the lure of cheap goods Teams from Nottinghamshire
:04:56. > :04:59.have seized fake branded items from a warehouse;
:05:00. > :05:01.while in Leicestershire, hundreds of dangerous objects
:05:02. > :05:04.have been confiscated, that were being imported
:05:05. > :05:10.through East Midlands Airport. In a warehouse at County Hall
:05:11. > :05:12.in Glenfield in Leicestershire, officers from the county's
:05:13. > :05:15.Trading Standards department checked These piles of goods are just two
:05:16. > :05:21.months' worth of poor quality objects seized as they passed
:05:22. > :05:27.through East Midlands Airport, Electrical chargers
:05:28. > :05:33.pose a particular risk. They can be an electrocution
:05:34. > :05:39.risk or a fire risk One thing we would say
:05:40. > :05:47.is definitely do not leave your charger on overnight
:05:48. > :05:49.because of fire risk reasons. In Mansfield, Nottinghamshire County
:05:50. > :05:53.Council's Trading Standards team recently seized potentially unsafe
:05:54. > :06:00.counterfeit electrical items They recovered 450 pieces
:06:01. > :06:08.covering 56 different brands, from a property
:06:09. > :06:16.in Kirkby in Ashfield. They will break, for a partner
:06:17. > :06:18.best, at worst they can kill them
:06:19. > :06:20.because these electrical items are
:06:21. > :06:23.We are in a protest of
:06:24. > :06:25.-- Process of testing but we believe
:06:26. > :06:29.In Leicestershire, the officers will have a smashing
:06:30. > :06:33.time after Christmas, continuing to destroy items
:06:34. > :06:37.to ensure they are unsaleable before they are recycled.
:06:38. > :06:42.James Robeson, BBC EAst Midlands Today.
:06:43. > :06:45.You're watching the last full East Midlands Today of the year,
:06:46. > :06:53.and still lots ahead tonight including this cheeky pair.
:06:54. > :07:00.Hello! Join as later for all the festive fun at the panto. It's
:07:01. > :07:08.great. I was going to say that. Really?
:07:09. > :07:11.But before that, Christmas is already underway for many people
:07:12. > :07:15.who finished work earlier this evening heading for a night out.
:07:16. > :07:18.There's always a danger that revellers will enjoy
:07:19. > :07:20.themselves too much so the East Midlands
:07:21. > :07:23.Ambulance Service is putting on mobile treatment centres,
:07:24. > :07:31.Our health correspondent Rob Sissons is in Derby.
:07:32. > :07:40.Are you having a good time? Yes, there's lots of people having a
:07:41. > :07:44.great time here, a great Christmas atmosphere. This car behind me is
:07:45. > :07:48.being used by a doctor who is out on the road tonight and I can show you
:07:49. > :07:53.over here, the ice rink, lots of people skating and enjoying the
:07:54. > :07:56.build-up to Christmas. We have been around the pubs in Derby today and I
:07:57. > :08:00.can tell you, they have been really busy with great party atmosphere is.
:08:01. > :08:05.It promises to be one of the busiest nights of the year but the emergency
:08:06. > :08:13.services and of course the pubs as well. It has been the busiest day of
:08:14. > :08:18.the year so far. We started getting people in at 11:30. We don't
:08:19. > :08:23.actually open until 12. We have all worked hard so all year and we get
:08:24. > :08:28.together for a drink. Best time of the year. But having a good time. I
:08:29. > :08:32.am here develop it Christmas because I am travelling to Spain on
:08:33. > :08:38.Christmas Day. Celebrating Christmas and today is my last day working in
:08:39. > :08:43.Derby, I'm off to work in London. In search of more money? In search of
:08:44. > :08:55.more money. The Derby people really know how to enjoy themselves, like
:08:56. > :08:58.the Welsh. Happy Christmas! This doctor is a former GP who will be
:08:59. > :09:06.out and about tonight helping people cope with too much to drink. We have
:09:07. > :09:09.people who have just fallen over, people who have been assaulted but
:09:10. > :09:13.the ones that cause is the problems are the ones who have had too much
:09:14. > :09:18.to drink and should have stopped earlier on and gone home. Aggressive
:09:19. > :09:23.drunks, amorous drunks? It's all of those, the competition to see who
:09:24. > :09:27.can be kissed most in the night is the favourite one. Our perspective
:09:28. > :09:30.is looking after yourself and make you sure that you don't get into a
:09:31. > :09:44.situation where you are not in charge. I am out tonight with the
:09:45. > :09:48.doctor. We want to provide an emergency service to the revellers
:09:49. > :09:51.who are out in the city centre. We want to urge people to be sensible
:09:52. > :10:00.and we couldn't continue to provide a service in the area. My advice is
:10:01. > :10:02.to drink slowly, have some soft drinks in between and make sure you
:10:03. > :10:08.and your friends get home safely. Don't abandon people. It's a big
:10:09. > :10:11.night in store for you, good luck with it all. We will have more on
:10:12. > :10:13.that in the coming weeks. The ambulance crews out
:10:14. > :10:17.and about helping people tonight. Among the many charities
:10:18. > :10:19.offering people a place to shelter over Christmas
:10:20. > :10:22.is Framework in Nottingham. They offer emergency accommodation
:10:23. > :10:25.to the homeless and say the number of people in need
:10:26. > :10:37.of their support is growing. Rough sleeping in creased, it
:10:38. > :10:42.doubled actually in the five years to 2015 and we know it has gone up
:10:43. > :10:46.more since then. It is increasing and if you are sleeping rough, there
:10:47. > :10:49.is a greater chance of you being attacked and they would be if you
:10:50. > :10:51.were just tucked up in your own home.
:10:52. > :10:59.You might remember us telling you about Mo Fayose from Nottingham
:11:00. > :11:01.who put an advert online inviting anyone alone on Christmas Day
:11:02. > :11:06.Well today she's been out shopping for the nearly 200 people
:11:07. > :11:11.Needless to say she's also had to find somewhere a little
:11:12. > :11:24.Is a mental health nurse, I find that people get festive loneliness
:11:25. > :11:31.and that got me thinking that we can bring people together and it sounds
:11:32. > :11:35.mad but to me, it's awesome because that will be 200 people smiling
:11:36. > :11:37.which makes me happy. That is a Christmas present for me.
:11:38. > :11:40.Unlike Mo, some of you are choosing to have your Christmas dinner away
:11:41. > :11:45.East Midlands Airport is expecting to see a 14% rise in passengers over
:11:46. > :11:47.the Christmas period compared to 12 months ago.
:11:48. > :11:51.Almost 80,000 people are due to travel from the region's airport
:11:52. > :11:53.over the next week - many of them in search
:11:54. > :12:06.We are going to celebrate Christmas in a different way this year. We are
:12:07. > :12:13.going to Tenerife Island. I am going to see my family in Poland. Jersey.
:12:14. > :12:17.I am spending Christmas with my friend and I am looking forward to
:12:18. > :12:23.it very much. I am hoping it is going to be a lot warmer than here.
:12:24. > :12:27.Today we will see it doesn't people come through the doors and getting
:12:28. > :12:32.on flights to either the family, enjoy summer sun or just get away.
:12:33. > :12:37.Advice for passengers is to end a enough time to get here, make sure
:12:38. > :12:41.you have looked online and know what you cannot have any different pieces
:12:42. > :12:42.of luggage and make you get in time and structure holiday in the right
:12:43. > :12:44.way. Of course many of us will be
:12:45. > :12:46.driving this Christmas - so for the latest news on the state
:12:47. > :12:49.of the roads we can talk to Frank Bird who's an emergency
:12:50. > :13:01.planning officer with the Highways However the major routes looking at
:13:02. > :13:05.the moment? Things are looking really good at the moment. They are,
:13:06. > :13:12.touch wood, quieter than anticipating. We are very grateful
:13:13. > :13:16.for motorists for doing a certain amount of planning and preparing for
:13:17. > :13:22.this Christmas getaway. What is the wider picture of people travelling
:13:23. > :13:29.further out of the region? The further north you go, the roads are
:13:30. > :13:32.still a bit of a challenge. The remains of the storm is still
:13:33. > :13:36.affecting the north of the country and the further east you go, you
:13:37. > :13:45.will go into the tail end of storm of Barbara. Those are the main areas
:13:46. > :13:50.being affected by storm Barbara? Yes, that is very much the case now.
:13:51. > :13:55.Certainly some of the ports on the east coast are experiencing very,
:13:56. > :13:59.very choppy waters so if you are going out tonight on the ferry, do
:14:00. > :14:04.expect unfortunately do have a rough ride as.
:14:05. > :14:07.But if you're not away this Christmas there's still plenty
:14:08. > :14:12.Like visiting one of the many displays of festive lights people
:14:13. > :14:26.That's just what our reporter Navtej Johal is doing right now.
:14:27. > :14:32.Good evening. Welcome to one of the most festive houses you will see
:14:33. > :14:37.anywhere in the East Midlands. But the past 13 years, this family home
:14:38. > :14:40.has been covered in lights and decorations and all the money raised
:14:41. > :14:45.through visitors coming to look at it is going to charity. This year,
:14:46. > :14:48.they have had a particularly record-breaking year and one of the
:14:49. > :14:52.organisers is with me now. This is your family home, you decorate it
:14:53. > :14:58.every year, you had a record-breaking year, how much money
:14:59. > :15:01.have you raise? We have raised ?15,500 as of last night and we will
:15:02. > :15:08.give half to Haywood house and have two when you wish upon a star. What
:15:09. > :15:15.does all of this do to your C Bell? It increases its likely during the
:15:16. > :15:23.month of December, definitely! We put it into our donation box. What
:15:24. > :15:27.do the neighbours make that? Now, our neighbour is absolutely love it.
:15:28. > :15:31.They are here every evening helping us. There are here tonight with
:15:32. > :15:37.their little boy and he helps Santa out, dressed as a little else. The
:15:38. > :15:41.atmosphere here has been amazing. What do you have to say to anyone
:15:42. > :15:46.who has visited or donated? We thank them very much and hope to see them
:15:47. > :15:54.again next year. I've been told that this takes four weeks to set up but
:15:55. > :15:58.just a single day to take down. From here, very Christmas.
:15:59. > :16:00.This time of year wouldn't be complete, I'm told,
:16:01. > :16:05.without a trip to the panto and tonight to me to you to me.
:16:06. > :16:09.You get the idea, the brothers who've been making people chuckle
:16:10. > :16:15.Barry and Paul, best known as the Chuckle Brothers are heading
:16:16. > :16:19.the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk at Nottingham's Theatre Royal.
:16:20. > :16:33.Jo Healey's been to meet the dynamic duo.
:16:34. > :16:38.What did you think of the Chuckle Brothers? Really funny. I like them
:16:39. > :16:45.because they were really funny. We couldn't stop laughing, we had tears
:16:46. > :16:48.streaming down our face. We were watching our grandson and he was in
:16:49. > :17:01.hysterics. They say silly words and that makes me laugh. A great
:17:02. > :17:09.performance! Hello. 50 years in panto. It seems like a long time to
:17:10. > :17:15.me. To you it is. But seriously, do you still love it? Yes, it is
:17:16. > :17:19.enjoyable. It is the one time it year when you work with all sorts of
:17:20. > :17:24.people, actors, singers and dancers and have fun with the audience. We
:17:25. > :17:28.have always liked Nottingham. We're not just saying that because we are
:17:29. > :17:35.here. They have always been a great audience. Doing the clubs in the old
:17:36. > :17:41.days, the best in the country. This is our favourite theatre. You also
:17:42. > :17:45.been to the married jury shop. What does that mean to you? They made us
:17:46. > :17:51.ambassadors earlier this year. They've done great stuff and really
:17:52. > :17:58.look after people very well. You must have loads of memories over bad
:17:59. > :18:02.time. We do, yes. The second one we ever did, we played our part as
:18:03. > :18:12.ourselves but we also played the Cal. I know you got to get off and
:18:13. > :18:16.get back on stage again. Thanks for talking to us. From me, to you. Do
:18:17. > :18:32.you, not to me. To me! To you! Coming up a look ahead
:18:33. > :18:35.to the festive fixture list but first an exclusive interview
:18:36. > :18:38.with the former Nottinghamshire Last year at this time
:18:39. > :18:43.he was playing for England - this Christmas he feels lucky
:18:44. > :18:45.to be alive. Back in April, at the age of 26,
:18:46. > :18:49.a serious heart condition It was one of the most shocking
:18:50. > :18:54.sports stories of the year. Now he's revealed to us that
:18:55. > :18:58.a defibrilator fitted inside his chest has helped
:18:59. > :19:14.to save his life once again. It was a day that changed his life
:19:15. > :19:20.forever, a day when he nearly died but somehow, he survived. A lot of
:19:21. > :19:24.these cases are found in post-moderns, that is the only way
:19:25. > :19:27.they are detected, and it is too late by then but luckily my body did
:19:28. > :19:34.its job and my heart certainly did its job. Yes, I'm very lucky but
:19:35. > :19:36.also unlucky in a lot of ways. I cannot dwell on what could have
:19:37. > :19:41.happened or what should have happened. No one could have
:19:42. > :19:45.predicted how life has turned out. Taylor was in his cricketing primer,
:19:46. > :19:53.playing for England, playing his dream. All I wanted was to play for
:19:54. > :19:57.England and I thought I should have played far more than I did and I
:19:58. > :20:02.just grabbed it with both hands and was just coming good. Then it was
:20:03. > :20:07.altogether away from me again. The best moment I've ever had was one of
:20:08. > :20:13.the last days I ever played cricket for England, catching those catches
:20:14. > :20:16.and winning a game for England. Amongst some great guys in the team,
:20:17. > :20:24.playing for your country, it doesn't get better than that. I achieved my
:20:25. > :20:28.dream but did it less than I had hoped. His health, and ongoing
:20:29. > :20:34.challenge, he is learning a new normal. If art is regulated by a
:20:35. > :20:38.disability. Just because the operation, it saved his life. When
:20:39. > :20:47.most people have an operation, they have it to make something better. I
:20:48. > :20:50.operation was not, but if something was to go wrong, it is a safety net.
:20:51. > :20:55.It has happened again and it certainly did its job and it gave me
:20:56. > :21:00.a shock to say the least. A massive shock. Coming to terms with life
:21:01. > :21:03.after cricket has been tough but a smile is never far away from the man
:21:04. > :21:09.who believes the support from social media helped him through the darkest
:21:10. > :21:14.days. You would be lying in bed being a bit cynical thinking, if I
:21:15. > :21:19.did die, I wonder who would miss me. It was like I had died and was
:21:20. > :21:27.overwhelming. I had 26 million tweets to me about me in the first
:21:28. > :21:31.two hours. Then I think it after 24 hours which is phenomenal and the
:21:32. > :21:36.positivity coming towards my way, I dread to think I would be mentally
:21:37. > :21:41.that support was not there. No longer able to play the games he has
:21:42. > :21:45.devoted his life to, he has developed a new-found love of golf
:21:46. > :21:51.and he is also coaching youngsters, helping to make a difference. I love
:21:52. > :21:53.it. I'm trying to help others and living it through them, to see what
:21:54. > :21:59.they can achieve. Reflecting on the year that so easily could have been
