:00:00. > :00:07.It's almost 6:30pm - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:08. > :00:10.Tonight - safe and well - the Leicester couple

:00:11. > :00:11.stranded by a blizzard on a Scottish mountainside.

:00:12. > :00:14.Huddled for warmth in emergency bivouack, they were eventually

:00:15. > :00:22.We'll definitely be back but we'll be probably a little

:00:23. > :00:32.become the new focus of the battle over fracking?

:00:33. > :00:34.Plus, smashed windows and slashed tyres, scores of cars

:00:35. > :00:37.vandalised across seven Leicestershire villages.

:00:38. > :00:41.Do they wake up one morning and say, do you fancy

:00:42. > :00:44.seeing how many cars we can smash up tonight?

:00:45. > :00:50.And just imagine trying to do a headcount of this lot.

:00:51. > :00:52.But they do have to count all the animals,

:00:53. > :01:08.Good evening and welcome to our first full programme of 2017 -

:01:09. > :01:14.First tonight, rescuers say a couple forced to spend a night

:01:15. > :01:19.in the Cairngorms are lucky to be alive.

:01:20. > :01:22.Bob and Cathy Elmer from Leicester were caught out when a planned hill

:01:23. > :01:28.They sheltered with their dog in survival bags in white out

:01:29. > :01:31.conditions before being found by a mountain rescue team.

:01:32. > :01:45.This was the moment members of the Cairngorm Mountain rescue team came

:01:46. > :01:49.across Bob and Cathy Elmer, 4000 feet up on a snow laden plateau. The

:01:50. > :01:54.pair had been hill walking in Scotland for around 25 years but

:01:55. > :01:57.they admit despite various periods and equipment they were unprepared

:01:58. > :02:02.for the commitments they faced when they ventured out on the first day

:02:03. > :02:07.of the year. We knew it was winter time. We probably didn't quite judge

:02:08. > :02:14.how long it was going to take. They became an issue when I got two

:02:15. > :02:19.thirds of the way down and Cathy was struggling to keep up with me. Then

:02:20. > :02:24.I knew it was going to take a lot longer than I had anticipated. With

:02:25. > :02:27.their dog in tow they found themselves in deep snow and

:02:28. > :02:32.darkness. And when the batteries in both their torches gave out. The

:02:33. > :02:35.snow was at times up to our waists. We decided we couldn't go on any

:02:36. > :02:40.further because we didn't know really where we were going. You

:02:41. > :02:44.couldn't see a hand in front of your face. So we decided to get the

:02:45. > :02:51.survival bags out and gets down for the night in them. Mountain rescuers

:02:52. > :02:56.say despite temperatures of -6 and high winds, Bob and Cathy's decision

:02:57. > :03:03.to stay put and wait for daylight robbery saved their lives. The

:03:04. > :03:09.prospect of staying out there isn't that attractive but it probably is

:03:10. > :03:14.decision that saved their lives. And the pair saying being prepared for

:03:15. > :03:18.when things might go wrong is key. You can go up on a summers day and

:03:19. > :03:24.be knee-high and snow here. We've been there, we've done it. You have

:03:25. > :03:29.to go equipped. You have do have the right kit even if the sun is

:03:30. > :03:32.shining. We are now well into the winter climbing season and while

:03:33. > :03:36.Scotland's weather can be unpredictable at the best of times

:03:37. > :03:40.that is especially the case up here and during the winter months. The

:03:41. > :03:45.message to anyone venturing into the hills is make sure you have the

:03:46. > :03:46.right equipment, make sure you have the necessary skills and always be

:03:47. > :03:52.prepared to turn back. Next tonight - Sherwood Forest

:03:53. > :03:56.could become the latest battle ground for those

:03:57. > :03:59.for and against fracking. Documents obtained by Friends

:04:00. > :04:03.of the Earth show that a chemical company wants to carry out seismic

:04:04. > :04:06.surveys to see if there's shale gas The survey area

:04:07. > :04:13.could come within 200 Opponents claim it will

:04:14. > :04:16.decimate the forest. But the company involved says

:04:17. > :04:18.Friends of the Earth Here's Quentin Rayner

:04:19. > :04:23.to tell us more. These plans have been revealed

:04:24. > :04:26.through a Freedom of Information They show that the chemical company

:04:27. > :04:38.INEOS Shale appears to have agreed terms with the Forestry Commission

:04:39. > :04:44.to carry out seismic surveys in Sherwood Forest

:04:45. > :04:46.and other licenced sites The survey would involve putting

:04:47. > :04:50.charges in the ground to establish if there is any gas in the rock

:04:51. > :04:53.underneath which might be extracted These tests could take place

:04:54. > :04:57.within 200 metres of the forest's most famous attraction,

:04:58. > :05:02.the 1000 year old Major Oak tree. The company insists

:05:03. > :05:04.it's not fracking in Friends of the Earth

:05:05. > :05:07.of unnecessarily alarming the public by misrepresenting information it

:05:08. > :05:09.has received from the Forestry One of its directors recently told

:05:10. > :05:13.us what's involved with the seismic surveys in licensed areas

:05:14. > :05:15.in the East Midlands, What we would do is undertake

:05:16. > :05:21.the survey work, then marry the survey work with vertical-cored

:05:22. > :05:25.wells - not fracked - simply samples of the geology,

:05:26. > :05:28.looking at the depths, the content, and then we would use

:05:29. > :05:33.that information to inform our conversation with the communities,

:05:34. > :05:37.with the regulator, with the planning authorities, to take

:05:38. > :05:46.on to a horizontal well and a frack. The Country Park is a Site

:05:47. > :05:48.of Special Scientific Interest, as well as a Special Area

:05:49. > :05:51.of Conservation, and Friends of the Earth fear the seismic

:05:52. > :05:54.surveys alone could damage the ancient woodland

:05:55. > :06:02.and its wildlife. Local anti-fracking groups fear that

:06:03. > :06:08.if fracking ultimately takes place, it could lead to the decimation

:06:09. > :06:16.of the Forest; increase the number of earthquakes in the surrounding

:06:17. > :06:19.area; disrupt the water table They intend to make it a rallying

:06:20. > :06:23.point by generating an international campaign opposing the plans starting

:06:24. > :06:28.this Saturday with a rally Still to come -

:06:29. > :06:31.a saddle-sore end to 2016. We meet Nottingham cyclist

:06:32. > :06:33.Kaiser Tylen who got on her bike every day last year -

:06:34. > :06:36.and covered a record-breaking thirty Police are appealing for information

:06:37. > :06:48.after more than 60 cars were damaged in the early hours of yesterday

:06:49. > :06:52.morning across Leicestershire. People reported slashed tyres

:06:53. > :06:55.and smashed windscreens Our reporter Navtej Johal is in one

:06:56. > :07:12.of those villages tonight. Good evening. I was speaking to a

:07:13. > :07:16.resident here earlier who told me this is a very quiet village and not

:07:17. > :07:20.much tends to happen here. That is one of the reasons why so many

:07:21. > :07:24.people have been so shocked by what has been described as just mindless

:07:25. > :07:27.destruction. One woman told me she stepped out of her house yesterday

:07:28. > :07:34.morning and counted ten cars damaged on this street alone. In total, more

:07:35. > :07:42.than 60 cars have had their tyres slashed or Windows smashed across

:07:43. > :07:47.Leicestershire in villages. However, nothing appears to have been stolen

:07:48. > :07:51.from any of them. We spoke to a couple of earlier who had a window

:07:52. > :07:53.smashed in their car and a woman here who had to tyres slashed of her

:07:54. > :07:56.car. Me and the kids, because

:07:57. > :07:59.the kids were happy that we'd got another car

:08:00. > :08:01.similar to the old one. You know, what gets

:08:02. > :08:05.into their heads? Do they wake up one morning

:08:06. > :08:08.and say, do you fancy seeing how many cars

:08:09. > :08:10.we can smash up tonight? My front tyre has just been replaced

:08:11. > :08:18.about a month ago, so it's And already I'm going to have

:08:19. > :08:22.to replace that, just because some people have gone

:08:23. > :08:36.and vandalised my car for no reason. The police have told us that no

:08:37. > :08:39.arrests have been made so far. However a black Vauxhall Vectra

:08:40. > :08:44.believed to be connected to the incidence was found abandoned

:08:45. > :08:47.yesterday afternoon in elms Road. Police are asking anyone with

:08:48. > :08:48.information about these incidents to come forward and contact them on

:08:49. > :08:54.101. 's Police have confirmed two officers

:08:55. > :08:57.were injured following a failed They were called to the Nationwide

:08:58. > :09:02.Building Society in Borrowash just after 4am yesterday,

:09:03. > :09:05.after reports of a break in. As the officers arrived

:09:06. > :09:08.at the scene, a van The gang then escaped

:09:09. > :09:12.in an Audi 4x4 which sped off An East Midlands hospital trust has

:09:13. > :09:24.started a campaign to reduce Falls remain a major cause

:09:25. > :09:29.of injury and death amongst the over 70s and cases rise

:09:30. > :09:32.during the Winter months. According to Age Uk one in three

:09:33. > :09:36.people over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall

:09:37. > :09:38.in a year. Our Health Correspondent

:09:39. > :09:50.Rob Sissons reports. Ryan has had a full. Here is being

:09:51. > :09:55.looked after in Nottinghamshire Nottinghamshire. He was going

:09:56. > :10:01.downstairs. It took seconds. He says he will regret it. Four steps from

:10:02. > :10:07.the Black bottom, handrail on the stairs, did I use it? No. Ryan

:10:08. > :10:12.suffered a hip at fracture and of course he is not the only one. As

:10:13. > :10:16.Kingsmill they see up to 400 hip fracture cases from falls each year.

:10:17. > :10:20.Numbers are rising because of the ageing population. To prevent them

:10:21. > :10:29.doctors recommend people check their homes for hazards, take regular

:10:30. > :10:32.exercise, eat well and get medical help early for problems which can

:10:33. > :10:39.cause dizziness. They say it is also important keep warm. The impact of a

:10:40. > :10:44.fracture can be devastating. It can lead to long-term consequences.

:10:45. > :10:48.About 65% of patients who have hip fractures can lose their

:10:49. > :10:53.independence. In the run-up to Christmas they have been seeing a

:10:54. > :11:00.lot of falls patients. Now, with the New Year cold snap they are

:11:01. > :11:04.expecting more. Edna fell at home, aged 90, she says the fall really

:11:05. > :11:14.suck her confidence. You have to watch the ice. I haven't walked to

:11:15. > :11:23.well these last two back years. I'm glad it was inside out outside.

:11:24. > :11:26.Doctors aim to operate as soon as possible because there is evidence

:11:27. > :11:31.this can act age recovery. 300 historic buildings

:11:32. > :11:32.and structures in Leicester are set to get greater

:11:33. > :11:34.protection from development. City Council leaders want them

:11:35. > :11:36.covered by so-called article four directions,

:11:37. > :11:38.which mean they can't be altered The list covers everything

:11:39. > :11:56.from churches to planters and even Lester has opened the first

:11:57. > :12:03.supermarket where you can very nearly drive up to the counter.

:12:04. > :12:08.1961. This was believed to be the first automated multi-scoring car

:12:09. > :12:12.park in Europe. Today it is still one of Leicester's landmarks,

:12:13. > :12:17.unlikely as that may seem. But like it or loathe it it is set to get

:12:18. > :12:23.greater planning protection. One of 300 structures to be covered by

:12:24. > :12:26.so-called article four directions. We have lots of buildings of

:12:27. > :12:29.national heritage value. We also have many buildings of local

:12:30. > :12:33.interest and value and we think it is important to protect that local

:12:34. > :12:39.interest. The articles cover everything from buildings to this

:12:40. > :12:42.stretch of planters, and mean they cannot be demolished, developed or

:12:43. > :12:47.changed without planning permission. The vast and varied list which also

:12:48. > :12:51.includes the former Lewis's tower and Georgian building has been

:12:52. > :13:00.welcomed by the Leicester Civic Society. At least they can't destroy

:13:01. > :13:06.the building before somebody has had a chance to make a case for saving

:13:07. > :13:13.it. These buildings and the car park are also among 380 among the council

:13:14. > :13:18.list of architectural interest, designed to give them extra

:13:19. > :13:23.protection. You have these various categories. And it is much easier to

:13:24. > :13:29.draw up plans and advise people. It easier to protect things. Some of

:13:30. > :13:33.the listings may be controversial. Those behind them say in a growing

:13:34. > :13:35.and changing city, buildings like this give a flavour of the past that

:13:36. > :13:39.should be protected for the future. And now to a cyclist from Nottingham

:13:40. > :13:44.who's broken the world record for the furthest distance cycled

:13:45. > :13:47.by a woman in a year. Yes, endurance sportswoman

:13:48. > :13:50.Kaiser Tylen travelled over 50,000 kilometres,

:13:51. > :13:54.beating the record set back She cycled every day of 2016,

:13:55. > :14:02.riding across England and Europe. And that includes Christmas Day,

:14:03. > :14:04.does it not, Kaiser? Welcome.

:14:05. > :14:06.Yes, it does. I have do ask you, why did

:14:07. > :14:09.you embark upon this? I used to read the

:14:10. > :14:16.Guinness Book Of World Records with my brother

:14:17. > :14:22.when we were kids, and then I read about Billie Fleming who set

:14:23. > :14:24.the record back in 1938 and it was just something

:14:25. > :14:27.that resonated with me. And once I got it into my head

:14:28. > :14:31.that was it then - I thought You've not been a lifelong cycling

:14:32. > :14:34.enthusiast, have you? No, I only started cycling just

:14:35. > :14:39.over four years ago. I'd climbed Kilimanjaro and I felt

:14:40. > :14:44.this void, so I took up So, yeah, I've only been

:14:45. > :14:50.doing that since 2012. You are a challenge

:14:51. > :14:51.taker, aren't you? There's one thing I read,

:14:52. > :14:54.and it said you wanted to have a year in the saddle, which

:14:55. > :14:57.to me sounds like hell on earth, really, because a saddle can be a

:14:58. > :15:00.very uncomfortable thing to spend Well, I rode my normal saddle

:15:01. > :15:07.that I'd rode for pretty much all of my training,

:15:08. > :15:10.and it was fine, but when I started riding every single day,

:15:11. > :15:14.yeah, it took its toll. And then in September I changed my

:15:15. > :15:20.saddle to a very fancy strange-looking contraption

:15:21. > :15:24.and it was like a new lease of life. Actually, it's a saddle

:15:25. > :15:30.that takes the pressure off your sit bones, so it

:15:31. > :15:34.distributes the pressure elsewhere. We'll have to share

:15:35. > :15:39.information at the end of What did you hope to achieve -

:15:40. > :15:43.what have you achieved now I wanted to inspire other people

:15:44. > :15:48.to get active, really, because I've gained so much from

:15:49. > :15:51.doing challenges and it's not just about the exercise but it's

:15:52. > :15:55.about the challenge itself, achieving a goal that you think

:15:56. > :15:59.is out of your reach. And I wanted to inspire others

:16:00. > :16:04.to do the same thing. So I started this thing

:16:05. > :16:09.called a sweat pledge, whereby people pledged sweat to me

:16:10. > :16:12.rather than donate money to charity So they would do

:16:13. > :16:14.exercise themselves? Yes, I would say, I'm doing

:16:15. > :16:17.this for the challenge and for the goal, so why don't

:16:18. > :16:20.you set yourself something that you Well, may many people

:16:21. > :16:27.take up your challenge. I think you're absolutely incredible

:16:28. > :16:30.to have done that, and And there's more video of Kaiser's

:16:31. > :16:37.story on our Facebook page. Still to come - a day

:16:38. > :16:40.of reckoning for Twycross Zoo. They're having to count every

:16:41. > :16:42.single animal they have - Time for sport, and January has

:16:43. > :16:59.barley begun and already there's Yes more on Leicester Tigers search

:17:00. > :17:07.for a new boss coming up Tonight the former England,

:17:08. > :17:10.Manchester United and Leeds star Alan Smith is taking temporary

:17:11. > :17:12.charge at Meadow Lane. We understand Smith who is currently

:17:13. > :17:15.a player/coach will take the team for the game with

:17:16. > :17:18.Morecambe on Saturday. Notts County conceded some

:17:19. > :17:21.shocking goals yesterday. Then John Sheridan was sacked

:17:22. > :17:27.by new owner Alan Hardy. The Magpies were beaten

:17:28. > :17:29.4-0 at Cambridge. It comes after nine

:17:30. > :17:31.league defeats in a row. This awful performance leaves Notts

:17:32. > :17:35.just one point above the relegation zone and perilously close

:17:36. > :17:37.to the prospect of So Notts County are looking for

:17:38. > :17:45.their 12th manager in seven years. The January transfer window is now

:17:46. > :17:48.open of course giving teams a chance to bring in new players -

:17:49. > :17:51.with signings already lined up So was it a Christmas

:17:52. > :18:08.cracker for our sides This was a great opportunity for

:18:09. > :18:14.Leicester to start 2017 with their first win of the season. But despite

:18:15. > :18:24.not getting that elusive win on their travels this was a good point,

:18:25. > :18:28.with cardio adding midfielder for around 25 million it has been a

:18:29. > :18:32.decent Christmas. They came out of the festive period with four points

:18:33. > :18:42.out of nine in Fardy back for this week 's game. Derby county's run

:18:43. > :18:48.came to an end at Norwich after Forrest turned down her Derby's bid

:18:49. > :18:53.for lands brief. This defeat showed how important it was to strengthen

:18:54. > :18:57.their squad in January. So, four points out of nine for the festive

:18:58. > :19:00.fixtures is disappointing for Derby but they are seventh in the table

:19:01. > :19:11.and well-placed for a good end to season. Meanwhile Nottingham Forest

:19:12. > :19:15.defeat to Barnsley. All should be resolved as soon as the takeover

:19:16. > :19:19.goes through. Nothing they could do about this goal though and the

:19:20. > :19:28.bosses in the dark over that American takeover. We wait, we are

:19:29. > :19:33.waiting and I hope the situation will be clear because I think

:19:34. > :19:40.everybody needs the result. So after taking one point out of 18, Forest

:19:41. > :19:44.are 20th in the championship, just two points above the relegation

:19:45. > :19:52.zone. But the takeover is expected in days.

:19:53. > :19:54.Matt Green seized his chance to score his eleventh goal

:19:55. > :19:57.of the season as the Stags won one nil at Blackpool.

:19:58. > :19:59.Mansfield are 16th in League Two - eight points off

:20:00. > :20:04.Rugby now and yes, not exactly a Happy New Year

:20:05. > :20:08.for the Leicester Tigers, who are looking for a new director

:20:09. > :20:11.of rugby after the departure of long-time club loyal servant

:20:12. > :20:17.He's paid the price for the Tigers poor run of form so far this season

:20:18. > :20:20.after his players showed a distinct lack of new year resolution

:20:21. > :20:32.The final straw for Richard Cockerill.

:20:33. > :20:35.Within hours of witnessing Tigers's New Year's Day home defeat

:20:36. > :20:39.by Saracens from the stands, the director of rugby had been sacked.

:20:40. > :20:42.A brief statement brought to an end more than two decades playing and

:20:43. > :20:48.coaching the most successful team in British rugby.

:20:49. > :20:51.And it was probably that record of success - Tigers won

:20:52. > :20:54.three premierships under Cockerill - that meant that this season's five

:20:55. > :20:57.losses in 12 games just wasn't ever going to be good enough for the

:20:58. > :21:02.Though the decision hasn't brought universal acclaim.

:21:03. > :21:05.Halfway through the season is not ideal.

:21:06. > :21:09.Also there's a couple of European cup games in the group coming up

:21:10. > :21:11.that are pretty important, and mathematically I know it's very

:21:12. > :21:14.difficult to see it happening but Leicester

:21:15. > :21:20.From current players, publicly at least, regret.

:21:21. > :21:23.Skipper Ben Youngs tweeting that Cockerill's commitment and passion

:21:24. > :21:29.While Marcos Ayerza told his followers it was a very sad day.

:21:30. > :21:32.This, despite reports of a players's revolt.

:21:33. > :21:36.It comes to a point as a player where you are sort of
