:00:11. > :00:28.denying manslaughter, a woman accused of causing a catastrophic

:00:29. > :00:33.injury to her baby. Smashed up, a New Year heartbreak

:00:34. > :00:39.for pupils and staff at a vandalised Leicester school.

:00:40. > :00:40.When the crowds melt away, photographer captures eerie scenes

:00:41. > :00:56.of an abandoned city. Welcome to Wednesday's

:00:57. > :00:58.programme with Anne Davies First tonight,

:00:59. > :01:00.a Leicestershire-based holiday company has stopped trading leaving

:01:01. > :01:02.hundreds of holidaymakers stranded and thousands

:01:03. > :01:07.of future bookings cancelled. All Leisure Group, which is based

:01:08. > :01:09.in Market Harborough, operates the cruise lines

:01:10. > :01:14.Swan Hellenic and The collapse has prompted

:01:15. > :01:17.up to 150 job losses, Well, Amy Harris is

:01:18. > :01:20.there for us tonight. Yes, this is the headquarters

:01:21. > :01:27.of All Leisure Holidays Limited, one of four travel companies

:01:28. > :01:30.in a group based here It provided holidays

:01:31. > :01:35.on two cruise ships, the Minerva and the Voyager,

:01:36. > :01:39.under the brand names Swan Hellenic and Voyages of Discovery,

:01:40. > :01:42.sailing around destinations like North Africa and the Far East,

:01:43. > :01:46.with many passengers flying Its collapse has

:01:47. > :01:54.affected 400 travellers. Luckily, most of those had

:01:55. > :01:58.finished their cruise so flew home as scheduled,

:01:59. > :02:04.but we understand 60 were stranded midway

:02:05. > :02:15.through their cruise holiday. 7,000 future bookings have

:02:16. > :02:18.also been cancelled, Clearly concerning news,

:02:19. > :02:24.but the firm was ATOL protected, so the Civil Aviation Authority

:02:25. > :02:27.will help to repatriate those affected and all holidaymakers

:02:28. > :02:35.will receive refunds. The work we are doing

:02:36. > :02:37.at the moment is to, back to the UK, and that is

:02:38. > :02:43.happening around about now, And for

:02:44. > :02:46.those 13,000 or so people who have arrangements for those to get a full

:02:47. > :02:53.refund from the ATOL scheme. And how is this affecting

:02:54. > :02:58.workers where you are? Three of the four companies

:02:59. > :03:04.in the group have been sold by administrators,

:03:05. > :03:13.and that's saved 200 jobs. All Leisure Holidays

:03:14. > :03:15.workers are not so lucky. 50 people here have lost their jobs,

:03:16. > :03:18.and 100 more who were working It's been confirmed this afternoon

:03:19. > :03:29.that a Leicester primary school will remain shut for the rest

:03:30. > :03:31.of this week, after dozens of windows and glass roof

:03:32. > :03:35.panels were smashed. The police say two 11-year-old boys

:03:36. > :03:38.have since been arrested and bailed. It will mean a very late

:03:39. > :03:40.start to the New Year for staff and 460 pupils

:03:41. > :03:59.at Braunstone Community Primary, Clearing up after a blitz of damage

:04:00. > :04:04.on the school. The staff were backing today at temp two in

:04:05. > :04:08.Leicester after dozens of glass panes in windows, doors and roof

:04:09. > :04:13.panels were smashed and broken. It has left the staff upset at what has

:04:14. > :04:18.happened. Safety is very important because the broken glass alone could

:04:19. > :04:22.put people at risk. Doors and windows have been smashed as well as

:04:23. > :04:25.the displays across to schools that have been damaged, and some of the

:04:26. > :04:30.other rooms that have been vandalised with spray paint. It is

:04:31. > :04:35.not just glass that has been broken. A play area specially created for

:04:36. > :04:39.nursery aged children has also been completely vandalised. We do feel

:04:40. > :04:44.really upset because we worked so hard last year developing the

:04:45. > :04:47.outside area. We got donations. We needed magical put the children and

:04:48. > :04:59.they love about here and it has just been trashed, so it is upsetting.

:05:00. > :05:04.But there has been some good news. Local firms have rallied round. I

:05:05. > :05:09.have just learnt that dues since have donated some Bach and some soil

:05:10. > :05:13.for us because obviously we have had to remove that all because it had

:05:14. > :05:17.shards of glass in it. They are coming down with that. I have had an

:05:18. > :05:21.e-mail from a local pastor that said if we need any support, that they

:05:22. > :05:26.are there for us to give us a hand with the clear up. That is lovely.

:05:27. > :05:30.Leicestershire police say to 11-year-olds have been questioned

:05:31. > :05:31.and released on bail. The School revealed this afternoon that it

:05:32. > :05:37.won't open again until next week. A jury has been hearing how

:05:38. > :05:40.a seven-month-old baby girl "suffered a catastrophic

:05:41. > :05:42.and ultimately fatal injury" that, experts say, could only be caused

:05:43. > :05:44.by excessive force . At Leicester Crown Court,

:05:45. > :05:50.Chuan-fang Zheng, who's 30, The prosecution claim she shook

:05:51. > :05:54.baby Phoebe "repeatedly, vigorously and aggressively"

:05:55. > :06:09.Jo Healey reports. Chuan-fang Zheng was left in charge

:06:10. > :06:14.of baby Braunstone Community Primary on the evening of March the 22nd the

:06:15. > :06:21.year before last. Within 30 minutes of being left on her sole carer, the

:06:22. > :06:24.court heard, Phoebe suffered a catastrophic and ultimately fatal

:06:25. > :06:29.injury, with significant bleeding on her brain and behind her eye and was

:06:30. > :06:33.unconscious. With the baby in her arms, Chuan-fang Zheng ran to the

:06:34. > :06:39.Chinese takeaway next door where Chuan-fang temp three's mother and

:06:40. > :06:43.father worked. They rushed the baby to hospital and there were extensive

:06:44. > :06:47.medical efforts to separate young life, but the injuries inflicted

:06:48. > :06:51.were so severe that the baby died four days later. She never regained

:06:52. > :06:55.consciousness. The prosecution said it would never be possible to

:06:56. > :07:00.establish exactly what happened behind closed doors. When she was

:07:01. > :07:04.left, Phoebe was in good health, he said. Chuan-fang Zheng must have

:07:05. > :07:10.caused significant and abuse of head trauma known as shaken baby and

:07:11. > :07:15.described by an expert as being very much at the severe end of the range.

:07:16. > :07:18.It would have been immediately apparent to Chuan-fang Zheng what

:07:19. > :07:24.she had done, he said, but the court was told she made a concerted effort

:07:25. > :07:30.to lie about the events which led up to it and tried to cover up her

:07:31. > :07:34.actions. She tried to blame the mother's efforts to resuscitating BB

:07:35. > :07:35.for causing serious injuries. Chuan-fang Zheng denies manslaughter

:07:36. > :07:41.and the trial is continuing. Let's return now to the two

:07:42. > :07:43.so-called garden villages approved in our region

:07:44. > :07:46.by the Government on Monday. A critic of the idea has said today

:07:47. > :07:49.he's not convinced the scheme near Derby meets the definition set

:07:50. > :07:51.out by the Government. A local councillor says

:07:52. > :07:53.the area earmarked for Infinity Garden Village isn't

:07:54. > :07:55.a new village at all, At least 2,000 homes are planned

:07:56. > :08:08.to be built on this land, creating what the Government has

:08:09. > :08:11.named Infinity Garden Village. Garden villages are one of the ways

:08:12. > :08:14.it is trying to ease This one, off the A50

:08:15. > :08:20.between Sinfin and Stenson Fields, will be one of 14 nationally,

:08:21. > :08:24.but one local councillor here says the Government has already failed

:08:25. > :08:26.to meet its criteria for what a garden village

:08:27. > :08:28.is supposed to be by All of the news houses

:08:29. > :08:36.at the northern end will be facing, over more than a mile,

:08:37. > :08:39.the existing houses. You are going to pretend that that

:08:40. > :08:42.somehow is a distinct community? It doesn't meet the criteria on that

:08:43. > :08:45.ground and it doesn't meaet the ones saying that the land should perhaps

:08:46. > :08:48.be in public ownership, not a blade of grass

:08:49. > :08:50.round here is in public ownership, and that it should

:08:51. > :08:52.be brownfield land. Well, again, this has been farmed

:08:53. > :08:56.from time immemorial. So, at first sight, this area

:08:57. > :08:59.doesn't seem to fit the bill for a garden village,

:09:00. > :09:04.but the Government has also said that it doesn't consider there to be

:09:05. > :09:07.a single template for a garden village and doesn't want to impose

:09:08. > :09:09.a set of development That responsibility lies

:09:10. > :09:16.with the local authorities and the proposal to build

:09:17. > :09:19.what is being described as "high-quality homes" here has

:09:20. > :09:21.been defended as essential This commitment here is to provide

:09:22. > :09:26.quality homes because we need to have in this area people

:09:27. > :09:29.who are going to support the industries - they need

:09:30. > :09:33.quality homes to live in. But the plans have received a mixed

:09:34. > :09:38.reaction from local residents. It's just adding on to Derby

:09:39. > :09:41.and Derby's problems. You are going to lose

:09:42. > :09:43.all the countryside. Work on the project is expected

:09:44. > :09:54.to begin at the end of next year. Meanwhile, 130 homes already

:09:55. > :09:56.confirmed for this site will start Well, the other garden village

:09:57. > :10:08.will be at Spitalgate Heath It will sit west of the A52

:10:09. > :10:16.and consist of around 3,700 homes. Covering 224 hectares,

:10:17. > :10:19.it will include 110,000 square metres for what's called "modern

:10:20. > :10:30.employment space", which could provide up to 4,000 new jobs

:10:31. > :10:32.and allow existing local South Kesteven District Council got

:10:33. > :10:36.it all approved as a garden village and the council's leader,

:10:37. > :10:38.Bob Adams, joins us You are planning for 3,700

:10:39. > :10:45.homes near Grantham. So what s the difference

:10:46. > :11:01.between a huge housing estate Well, a lot of it is to do with the

:11:02. > :11:05.density. The densities in the garden village or be considerably less than

:11:06. > :11:09.in a mass development. I believe it will give us a great opportunity to

:11:10. > :11:16.build a quality players were people and families would want to raise

:11:17. > :11:22.their families. Is a garden village just a fancy name for a big housing

:11:23. > :11:27.estate? Well, no, not really. It will be a village insofar as not

:11:28. > :11:35.only will there be housing but there will be housing, recreation, open

:11:36. > :11:39.land. Schooling as well. It will be at contained village within the

:11:40. > :11:44.parameters of that area. I am sure there are bound to be concerned

:11:45. > :11:51.about strains on services. Are you happy that it will be complete

:11:52. > :11:56.within itself? Yes, I am. I am completely happy. I think it is a

:11:57. > :12:00.great thing for the area. I think it has brought together the public and

:12:01. > :12:03.private sector to work jointly to achieve success and I think it is an

:12:04. > :12:09.acknowledgement by government that the area is an ambitious, can do,

:12:10. > :12:15.will deliver a place for development to take place. You are responsible

:12:16. > :12:19.and accountable not to the government for giving them this

:12:20. > :12:25.garden village. You are happy that that is what you will be able to

:12:26. > :12:29.achieve? Yes, absolutely. There was a long process to go through in

:12:30. > :12:34.terms of negotiations and planning consents of the rest of it, but I am

:12:35. > :12:38.absolutely confident that we can deliver what the government want us

:12:39. > :12:46.to deliver Bob Evans, thank you for speaking to us.

:12:47. > :12:48.A person has died in a house fire in Rutland.

:12:49. > :12:51.Leicestershire Fire and Rescue were called in the early

:12:52. > :12:53.hours of this morning to a property in Cottesmore.

:12:54. > :12:55.They entered to rescue someone inside who was trapped.

:12:56. > :12:59.The cause of the fire is now being investigated by both

:13:00. > :13:03.the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and police.

:13:04. > :13:04.Shares in the Leicestershire-based company Next have tumbled

:13:05. > :13:06.after disappointing sales over Christmas.

:13:07. > :13:09.The retailer has warned that pre-tax profits could fall by as much as 14%

:13:10. > :13:13.It is blaming a weaker pound and people buying fewer

:13:14. > :13:33.The company's chief executive also says prices could rise, by up to 5%.

:13:34. > :13:52.More than 2.5 million people have watched a film about...

:13:53. > :13:55.Still to come: An apocalyptic view of one of our cities.

:13:56. > :13:57.A young photographer captured these images of Nottingham's abandoned

:13:58. > :14:19.The parents of a young man who died from leukaemia are urging more sixth

:14:20. > :14:20.form colleges to host potentially life-saving donor

:14:21. > :14:24.They are continuing the campaign started by their son to educate

:14:25. > :14:26.others about giving blood and bone marrow.

:14:27. > :14:32.Parents Keith and Kay Sudbury proudly continue the campaign

:14:33. > :14:35.started by their son, Adrian.

:14:36. > :14:38.The journalist died from leukaemia in 2008, but he has left

:14:39. > :14:44.His wish was beautiful in its simplicity.

:14:45. > :14:48.He wanted every 16 to 18-year-old in the country to be taught

:14:49. > :14:50.the facts about blood, stem cell and organ donation.

:14:51. > :14:55.The couple, from Pinkston in Nottinghamshire, founded

:14:56. > :14:59.'Register and Be' lifer information sessions, which are now held

:15:00. > :15:06.Over six years, 18,000 youngsters have joined the stem cell register.

:15:07. > :15:10.Regular sessions have been held that Bilborough College,

:15:11. > :15:18.Three youngsters here have even become bone marrow donors.

:15:19. > :15:21.Even if they don't all sign up, they talk about it to their friends,

:15:22. > :15:24.they take that message off to work and university and it is the wider

:15:25. > :15:27.effect, as well as the almost 700 students we have got

:15:28. > :15:32.And now the drive continues, to encourage more schools

:15:33. > :15:38.In the Midlands region, we are already in over 100 schools,

:15:39. > :15:43.which is fantastic, but nationally, throughout the whole country,

:15:44. > :15:45.we are now in 800 schools, which is a fantastic number

:15:46. > :15:48.of schools, but if anyone is listening to this

:15:49. > :15:50.who would like us to come in, then contact Anthony Nolan

:15:51. > :16:00.The message is clear - the more people that join

:16:01. > :16:07.the register, the more lives that will be saved.

:16:08. > :16:09.Four men have been arrested in Derbyshire on suspicion

:16:10. > :16:15.Two men, aged 24 and 27, were seriously injured after a fight

:16:16. > :16:17.on King Street in Belper, outside the Green House pub.

:16:18. > :16:26.Three men from Eastwood and one from Nottingham have all been

:16:27. > :16:28.arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder the 27-year-old.

:16:29. > :16:31.Police say they have been questioned and released on bail.

:16:32. > :16:34.Families living near a new waste treatment centre say they're alarmed

:16:35. > :16:36.at plans which could increase the amount of rubbish

:16:37. > :16:41.Campaigners lost their fight to stop an incinerator

:16:42. > :16:45.They say the company behind the scheme wants to take an extra

:16:46. > :16:52.But Resource Recovery Solutions says there are no plans to receive any

:16:53. > :16:55.extra waste and it has merely applied to update its

:16:56. > :17:09.Now, they are voted in to make their neighbourhood,

:17:10. > :17:11.their county or even the world a better place.

:17:12. > :17:14.But almost as soon as they start work they face mistrust,

:17:15. > :17:18.So why would anyone in their right mind want to be a politician

:17:19. > :17:20.and is our disdain for politics deterring good people

:17:21. > :17:23.Here's our Political editor, Tony Roe.

:17:24. > :17:27.We knock it and call it the 'Westminster bubble' -

:17:28. > :17:28.talking among themselves, hidden from the real world.

:17:29. > :17:32.We hear that so often it harms reputations.

:17:33. > :17:35.I think MPs across-the-board are working really hard

:17:36. > :17:38.and they are trying to do a really good job for their constituents,

:17:39. > :17:40.but they are facing online abuse and, actually,

:17:41. > :17:43.I think it's particularly bad for women.

:17:44. > :17:45.Bex Bailey used to work for Liz Kendall,

:17:46. > :17:50.Party workers knock on doors not just when there's an election.

:17:51. > :17:53.A lot of the abuse that is happening is targeted at women and a lot

:17:54. > :17:56.of the stuff that people are saying is very gendered, so it's rape

:17:57. > :17:59.threats and death threats and, actually, I am really worried that

:18:00. > :18:01.that will put young women, in particular, off politics.

:18:02. > :18:04.Alistair Jones is a principal lecturer in politics at de

:18:05. > :18:09.He says social media has a lot to answer for in explaining the lack

:18:10. > :18:15.In that respect, we are in a truly horrible place.

:18:16. > :18:18.I mean, one of the problems is, social media is supposed to be this

:18:19. > :18:21.vehicle to make us all more democratic and some of the things

:18:22. > :18:25.that being said are inciting racial hatred, inciting religious

:18:26. > :18:31.The murder of Jo Cox ushered in a period when people did

:18:32. > :18:37.appreciate the job our politicians do, but it didn't last long.

:18:38. > :18:39.The danger is those across the political spectrum,

:18:40. > :18:42.especially women, who want to help people may be put off

:18:43. > :18:46.by the nastiness and the division which has emerged since

:18:47. > :18:51.I think, on a local level, we have been given training on how

:18:52. > :18:53.to protect ourselves, how to watch out for

:18:54. > :19:00.But a lot of respect actually comes, I find,

:19:01. > :19:03.from members of the public is, even if they don't agree with you,

:19:04. > :19:06.that they feel that you hold a strong conviction and that

:19:07. > :19:10.if at any time that they need your help, that you will always be

:19:11. > :19:16.It may be called a bubble, but they will be back

:19:17. > :19:19.in their constituencies by the next weekend talking to the people

:19:20. > :19:40.It has to be a tough job, doesn't it?

:19:41. > :19:42.First tonight, a big blow for the Leicester Tigers.

:19:43. > :19:44.Their star player, Manu Tuilagi, has been ruled out for six

:19:45. > :19:49.It is the latest in a string of setbacks for the highest paid

:19:50. > :19:52.Meanwhile, the players and acting coach have denied reports

:19:53. > :19:54.they forced out the Director of Rugby, Richard Cockerill,

:19:55. > :20:13.Four seasons, just 22 premiership starts. Manu Tuilagi has another

:20:14. > :20:17.hospital appointment. It took three players to stop at the weekend and

:20:18. > :20:21.the simple blow to the back of the right need to injure the cruciate

:20:22. > :20:25.ligament. We are devastated for him because he has worked so hard to get

:20:26. > :20:33.back to where he is out at the moment. Someone stole the thunder on

:20:34. > :20:38.the day of claims of a player revolt and the coach's ultimatum to sack

:20:39. > :20:43.Richard Cockerill were flatly denied. We don't get involved in any

:20:44. > :20:47.of those decisions. It came as a bit of a shock. What is not disputed by

:20:48. > :20:51.the differences between Richard Cockerill and the man of debris

:20:52. > :20:57.charge. On a personal level we got on pretty well, we had a good

:20:58. > :21:01.relationship. On a professional level, we just had a lot of

:21:02. > :21:05.differences I suppose, in terms of the loss how to play the game and

:21:06. > :21:09.how to play the game and hopefully with tree in and draw it out of the

:21:10. > :21:12.players. Sometimes when those fundamental differences are still

:21:13. > :21:16.far apart, it is hard to give the clarity and direction that the Group

:21:17. > :21:21.are needed. Richard Cockerill has been back here on the training

:21:22. > :21:27.ground to say goodbye to both Aaron Mark and the players today. Richard

:21:28. > :21:31.Cockerill was responsible for bringing many players to the academy

:21:32. > :21:34.here into the first-team and developing them as players. He

:21:35. > :21:41.brought me in the middle of nowhere, a complete unknown, and everything I

:21:42. > :21:47.have achieved has involved him and been because of him. So, will run
