:00:00. > :00:00.It's almost 6:30pm - you're watching East Midlands Today

:00:00. > :00:00.with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:00:07. > :00:09.Tonight - the British Red Cross is drafted in to help overstretched

:00:10. > :00:27.Many hospitals have been under extreme pressure. Helping out on the

:00:28. > :00:30.front line, supporting the Ambulance Service, many people will be shocked

:00:31. > :00:39.and it is a badge of shame for the Government. Also, H S to write, the

:00:40. > :00:43.alignment planned for here under pressure that could see some of

:00:44. > :00:48.these houses demolished. Plus the devastating mystery illness

:00:49. > :00:53.that has left a Nottinghamshire woman free ring for her life. I need

:00:54. > :01:02.help and I need some reasons why I am like this. And... A project

:01:03. > :01:04.merging music with sport to encourage more young boys to break

:01:05. > :01:13.into song. Good evening and welcome

:01:14. > :01:17.to Monday's programme. First, there's political outrage

:01:18. > :01:20.tonight over the fact the Red Cross had to be called in to help

:01:21. > :01:25.the region's emergency health services cope

:01:26. > :01:28.with patients over New Year. The Shadow Health Secretary's called

:01:29. > :01:32.it a badge of shame. It's also emerged that

:01:33. > :01:34.at the peak of the rush, one of our accident and emergency

:01:35. > :01:37.units was seeing three patients More on that in a moment but first,

:01:38. > :01:43.Dominic's been looking at the sheer weight of work

:01:44. > :01:45.confronting our Well, one way to gauge

:01:46. > :01:50.the sheer volume of traffic through our hospitals is to look

:01:51. > :01:55.at EMAS, the ambulance service. Here's what they were contending

:01:56. > :01:58.with between New Year's Eve 88 extra vehicles were

:01:59. > :02:04.put on to the roads The number of potentially

:02:05. > :02:08.life-threatening calls, More than 2000 calls were passed

:02:09. > :02:17.through to EMAS by NHS111. It all meant a situation for staff

:02:18. > :02:22.and patients that's far from ideal. Breaks slashed to 20 minutes

:02:23. > :02:25.for ambulance crews, waits in A of three,

:02:26. > :02:31.four, five hours. Here's how the staff union rep

:02:32. > :02:33.describes the situation over the last week at one

:02:34. > :02:36.of our hospitals, I went down to the A department

:02:37. > :02:43.today with the branch secretary and we spoke to a number of nurses

:02:44. > :02:48.and health care assistants and we asked how did they find

:02:49. > :02:51.working over the Christmas and New Year period

:02:52. > :03:00.and they said it was horrific. Resus department, they cater

:03:01. > :03:02.for nine beds, there was up to 20 people wanting

:03:03. > :03:05.the nine beds so some had Yes, there have and the word crisis

:03:06. > :03:19.is being used liberally. To help us assess whether it's truly

:03:20. > :03:22.a crisis we're currently seeing, let's go to the QMC now

:03:23. > :03:43.and join our Health Crisis is an opinion, a value

:03:44. > :03:48.judgment but the facts are that the Health and Social Care system is

:03:49. > :03:51.under strain in this part of the world, the East Midlands, we are

:03:52. > :03:58.seeing at that evidence by some of the facts that we have pulled of.

:03:59. > :04:03.Last Monday at the Queens medical Centre, at one over there was a 180

:04:04. > :04:10.pieces in the Department, that is a record. -- 180 patients in the

:04:11. > :04:17.Department. There is also stream for the Ambulance Service. They have

:04:18. > :04:21.been under massive pressure and has drafted and the British Red Cross.

:04:22. > :04:27.That has meant that crews have been given support by the Red Cross.

:04:28. > :04:33.Patients were supported as crews shortened their breaks. The Red

:04:34. > :04:37.Cross also responded to a small number of emergencies and took some

:04:38. > :04:41.patients home of the Shadow Health Secretary says that he regards this

:04:42. > :04:46.situation as dumb thing that should not have happened. -- as something

:04:47. > :04:48.that should not have happened. A lot of people across

:04:49. > :04:50.the East Midlands, especially in cities like Leicester,

:04:51. > :04:53.Nottingham, will be shocked as these revelations but the Red Cross has

:04:54. > :04:55.always provided support for elderly people in the community

:04:56. > :04:58.and that is a good thing, we commend them for that,

:04:59. > :05:00.but actually having to be helping out on the front line,

:05:01. > :05:02.supporting the Ambulance Service, I think many people will be shocked

:05:03. > :05:06.and I think it's a badge of shame for the Government that our NHS

:05:07. > :05:15.is on the brink of crisis For the Conservatives, for the

:05:16. > :05:19.Government, the Health Secretary has responded by saying that the health

:05:20. > :05:23.service staff are doing a fantastic job under very difficult

:05:24. > :05:28.circumstances. He says that there are a very real pressures. In the

:05:29. > :05:32.House of Commons is evening, he suggested that the four of wheat

:05:33. > :05:40.needed to be looked at. It was designed for urgent cases, not just

:05:41. > :05:45.miner cases. -- that the four weeks. Here there are a third of people are

:05:46. > :05:51.waiting for longer than the four other target. -- the four hour

:05:52. > :05:52.targets. The truth is that there are some

:05:53. > :05:54.very severe problems and we are doing everything we can

:05:55. > :05:57.to sort them out. This is the most challenging time

:05:58. > :06:00.of year for the NHS but in the vast majority of cases people watching

:06:01. > :06:03.this programme can be confident that their services are managing

:06:04. > :06:05.to cope despite extreme pressure. Why has there been this completely

:06:06. > :06:22.disproportionate surge in patient That's a very big question. I think

:06:23. > :06:30.that the answer is complicated. It's undoubted lead to do with the strewn

:06:31. > :06:35.on social care. It is a problem to discharge some of the patients from

:06:36. > :06:41.hospital. People also tell us that they have some problems accessing

:06:42. > :06:46.their GP. One of the big factors is the ageing population. We are living

:06:47. > :06:51.longer and is the NHS is keeping us alive for longer. There are more

:06:52. > :06:53.frail and elderly people that have complex health problems.

:06:54. > :06:57.We'll be keeping a close eye on that situation and we'd like to hear how

:06:58. > :07:00.you think the NHS has been doing this winter - and you can send us

:07:01. > :07:05.There's the address now on the screen.

:07:06. > :07:09.Residents of a Derbyshire village feel completely in the dark

:07:10. > :07:13.about what may happen to some of their homes if a connecting line

:07:14. > :07:17.The so-called spur line would branch off

:07:18. > :07:22.to connect HS2 to Sheffield, 22 miles to the north.

:07:23. > :07:26.But people in Newton say it will be of no benefit to them,

:07:27. > :07:33.and could see established and brand new homes in the village demolished.

:07:34. > :07:36.They're holding a public meeting this weekend to discuss the blight

:07:37. > :07:41.In Newton, Tony Mellors - 40 years a resident -

:07:42. > :07:44.tells me what campaigners believe a spur off HS2 through Derbyshire

:07:45. > :07:58.It will mean a house is coming down on this side, seven on the other

:07:59. > :07:59.side as the real cause straight through.

:08:00. > :08:02.It was last year that residents suddenly found out that a spur line

:08:03. > :08:05.off the main HS2 route would take high-speed trains through

:08:06. > :08:08.the western edge of their village, right along the edge of a brand

:08:09. > :08:09.new housing estate called Newton Fields.

:08:10. > :08:12.On the estate, houses are still being built but there's

:08:13. > :08:15.complete uncertainty about some homes' future.

:08:16. > :08:18.Marie knew nothing about the HS2 spur line when she bought

:08:19. > :08:30.It's a bigger worry and nobody knows where the stand. I speak to my

:08:31. > :08:34.neighbours and nobody knows what is happening. We have been to two

:08:35. > :08:38.meetings and people say that there will be compensation but it has

:08:39. > :08:42.taken a long time tries to save up and buy the house. Now, I don't know

:08:43. > :08:43.what the future holds. At the local parish chariman's

:08:44. > :08:45.house, they're examining detailed maps showing the route of the spur

:08:46. > :08:48.line - the different colours represent different levls

:08:49. > :08:59.of compensation available Our main cause for concern is the

:09:00. > :09:07.level of compensation being offered to the individuals whose houses are

:09:08. > :09:08.likely to be demolished. Also the inconvenience to the community as a

:09:09. > :09:08.whole. Back on the housing estate,

:09:09. > :09:11.Tony Mellors told me that while Sheffiled might get high-speed

:09:12. > :09:13.trains via this spur line, it would be at the cost

:09:14. > :09:26.of Newton and its environs. Some property prices has dropped by

:09:27. > :09:31.30%. The house is usually being instructed are in line for

:09:32. > :09:36.demolishing. The effect is worried because during the construction of

:09:37. > :09:42.the HS2, the attractive for roads in and out of the deal will be closed.

:09:43. > :09:49.-- three out of the four wrote in and out of the village. Also the

:09:50. > :09:53.leisure trails will act. That is along with the country park. -- the

:09:54. > :10:11.leisure trails will disappear. Newton residents are holding a

:10:12. > :10:12.public meeting in the village this Saturday.

:10:13. > :10:18.And Derby County lead the way with spectacular goals

:10:19. > :10:28.as they and Leicester go into tonight's fourth round draw.

:10:29. > :10:31.A young woman from Mansfield says she fears for her life

:10:32. > :10:34.because of a mystery illness which leaves blue patches

:10:35. > :10:40.on her face and causes her to bleed uncontrollably.

:10:41. > :10:43.Adele Uden's condition has baffled doctors and it's thought

:10:44. > :10:47.She's desperate for an effective treatment, but so far

:10:48. > :10:55.26-year-old Adele Uden applies what she calls her brave face up

:10:56. > :10:58.to a dozen times a day, to stave off the abuse

:10:59. > :11:06.As long as I've got the make-up on, it's almost like having a massive

:11:07. > :11:11.shield around me so that other people don't see what I'm not,

:11:12. > :11:17.Adele has a seven-year-old son, and the bleeding

:11:18. > :11:21.The blue marks appeared around a year ago.

:11:22. > :11:23.Recently it's got worse and last week she had

:11:24. > :11:27.to have two emergency blood transfusions after haemorrhaging.

:11:28. > :11:32.The patches aren't bruises but some sort of bleeding under the skin.

:11:33. > :11:35.As far as we're aware I'm only one like this,

:11:36. > :11:41.that we have found up to a year which is part of the reason why

:11:42. > :11:43.we are doing all this, because I need help,

:11:44. > :11:48.I need to be able to find reasons as to why I'm like this.

:11:49. > :11:51.Adele has been diagnosed with endo-metriosis,

:11:52. > :11:52.polycystic ovaries and pelvic inflamatory disease,

:11:53. > :11:56.but none of them explain the extent of the bleeding or the blue patches.

:11:57. > :12:00.One consultant told her last week that she'd never seen anything

:12:01. > :12:03.like this in her 30-year career, and Adele has been

:12:04. > :12:06.warned the condition could shorten her life.

:12:07. > :12:09.One of my biggest worries is what kind of a future

:12:10. > :12:17.The past two years have gone downhill very

:12:18. > :12:20.quickly and it's not just my future, there's my fiance's future,

:12:21. > :12:23.my son's future, my mum's future and they could very well end up

:12:24. > :12:28.Adele says she feels she's existing rather than living.

:12:29. > :12:38.But May promises some hope, when she gets married.

:12:39. > :12:40.A man has been arrested after two people were found injured

:12:41. > :12:44.Officers were called to Avondale Road in Spondon

:12:45. > :12:48.on Saturday and a man and woman were taken to hospital.

:12:49. > :12:50.The woman remains in a serious condition.

:12:51. > :12:54.A 56-year-old man is now in custody and is being questioned.

:12:55. > :13:00.Anyone with information is being asked to contact the police.

:13:01. > :13:02.A Leicester saleswoman has admitted two counts of fraud involving

:13:03. > :13:07.Barbara Stone was caught following an investigation

:13:08. > :13:11.led by the East Midlands regional scam-busters team.

:13:12. > :13:13.The 62-year-old from Leicester worked for Aspire Magazine,

:13:14. > :13:18.Stone was a cold-caller who fraudulently sold thousands

:13:19. > :13:22.of pounds of advertising to a couple in their 80s who wanted to rent

:13:23. > :13:27.And she also duped a dog rescue charity based in Shropshire.

:13:28. > :13:30.She'll be sentenced next month and has been warned to expect

:13:31. > :13:45.A new report warns tonight that one in three young people

:13:46. > :13:47.in the East Midlands don't feel in control of their lives.

:13:48. > :13:50.More than one in ten think they will amount to nothing,

:13:51. > :13:54.The rather gloomy findings come from the Prince's Trust annual

:13:55. > :13:56.Youth Index which has been published today.

:13:57. > :14:01.Here on the Saffron Lane Estate these teenagers are on their way

:14:02. > :14:04.to a drop-in clinic to get some careers advice.

:14:05. > :14:06.It's held here every day for young people.

:14:07. > :14:08.The estate has high levels of deprivation

:14:09. > :14:13.Many are left feeling unsure about their future.

:14:14. > :14:18.But these teenagers say they are taking control of their lives.

:14:19. > :14:25.I know what I want to do, I've got positivity in my mind,

:14:26. > :14:29.I've got to push myself towards it but they don't, so they just need

:14:30. > :14:31.to get their own game plan and push themselves towards it.

:14:32. > :14:35.And I know you need to work hard for stuff.

:14:36. > :14:38.Other people just want everybody else to do their stuff for them.

:14:39. > :14:40.I know that people don't do that for you.

:14:41. > :14:47.He says a lot of the young people he sees can't shake off

:14:48. > :14:51.the reputation of living on the Saffron Lane Estate.

:14:52. > :14:54.I had an instance where a young person told me that they felt that

:14:55. > :14:57.when they had a job interview if they said they were from

:14:58. > :14:59.Saffron Lane Estate, that would immediately be a cross

:15:00. > :15:05.The report doesn't make good reading for this region.

:15:06. > :15:07.Almost a third of young people say they don't feel

:15:08. > :15:13.Many are feeling trapped by their circumstances,

:15:14. > :15:16.with more than one in ten saying they don't believe they can change

:15:17. > :15:20.The research also reveals that 17% of young people think their life

:15:21. > :15:26.will amount to nothing, no matter how hard they try.

:15:27. > :15:37.For those of young people that were not in work and his prospects

:15:38. > :15:41.-- For those of young people that are not in work and whose prospects

:15:42. > :15:43.are not that good at the moment as they see it, this

:15:44. > :15:47.is a slightly worrying trend that there is a of work to be done

:15:48. > :15:50.At the Prince's Trust workshop near Grantham,

:15:51. > :15:53.these people are taking part in a 12 week training course.

:15:54. > :15:55.Hopefully, we're trying to give them the confidence to go

:15:56. > :15:57.forward and actually make a difference to themselves.

:15:58. > :16:02.What they do is get the confidence to do it for themselves.

:16:03. > :16:04.For many young people, life may seem bleak right now

:16:05. > :16:06.but these teenagers say they are determined they will

:16:07. > :16:11.A man from Derby crawled with a broken leg for more than two

:16:12. > :16:13.hours after falling from rocks on the Dorset coast.

:16:14. > :16:15.Tim Robinson slipped whilst walking on the Jurassic Coast,

:16:16. > :16:19.After crawling for three quarters of a mile, he was found

:16:20. > :16:23.He was taken by lifeboat to a waiting ambulance.

:16:24. > :16:41.A new study led by an astronomer at the University of Leicester have

:16:42. > :16:45.found something new about Jupiter. We can see in deeper layers of the

:16:46. > :16:50.atmosphere. It means that astronomers can find out more about

:16:51. > :16:53.the conditions on a service of the planet.

:16:54. > :16:55.Still to come this evening - Arctic winds are heading south.

:16:56. > :17:06.Well, by the end of the week, temperatures are down to freezing.

:17:07. > :17:12.Does that mean snow? Join me later in the programme for the details.

:17:13. > :17:14.Over to sport now. First Derby County are set to sign

:17:15. > :17:16.striker David Nugent The deal, thought to be

:17:17. > :17:27.worth ?2.5 million, Nugent is well known

:17:28. > :17:30.here after spending four fantastic years at Leicester City,

:17:31. > :17:34.scoring 54 goals. Craig Ramage was there -

:17:35. > :17:36.the former midfielder is Derby-County mad and I spoke

:17:37. > :17:48.to him just a short time ago. Yes, it seems a good acquisition. He

:17:49. > :17:54.has scored goals in the championship and some promotions along the way.

:17:55. > :18:02.I'm happy with that. What timing after the cup upset, the 2-1 win

:18:03. > :18:11.over rest from, the romance of the cup isn't dead. Remarkable turnout

:18:12. > :18:20.from the Derby fans. The atmosphere wasn't Asterix. -- was fantastic. I

:18:21. > :18:29.think that the three original is definitely not over. What about the

:18:30. > :18:35.quality of the goals. Those goals were absolutely world-class. David's

:18:36. > :18:43.have been doing it all his career. He's got it in his locker. Brilliant

:18:44. > :18:49.technique. He got the winning goal. Everybody is delighted. And who

:18:50. > :18:57.would you like next in the draw tonight? That's interesting. Do I

:18:58. > :19:02.want high-quality or dodgy pies? I'll have to have a think about that

:19:03. > :19:12.whether I want Premier League or the woolly. Hopefully the new signing

:19:13. > :19:20.can add to the quality. How far can Derby goal in the cup? Could this be

:19:21. > :19:24.the year? Yes, definitely. We haven't scored too many goals in the

:19:25. > :19:30.championship, hopefully David Nugent will add these calls. Hopefully he

:19:31. > :19:35.can guide us and get as naked run for the cup. -- get us in a good run

:19:36. > :19:36.for the cup. So Derby in the fourth-round draw -

:19:37. > :19:39.Leicester are in there too New signing Wilfred Ndidi

:19:40. > :19:43.was the star man, closely followed by summer singing

:19:44. > :19:45.Ahmed Musa. And this was the start

:19:46. > :19:52.of a breathless spell Romelu Lukaku giving

:19:53. > :19:57.the home side the lead. Leicester's form away from home this

:19:58. > :20:00.season has been wretched - Twice in five minutes Ahmed Musa

:20:01. > :20:05.found the net, to propel Leicester Drinkwater's touch perfection -

:20:06. > :20:14.Musa - doubling his season's goal-scoring tally and completing

:20:15. > :20:19.the scoring for the day. Leicester still had

:20:20. > :20:21.defensive duties to do - but Schmeichel's save

:20:22. > :20:29.secured the win. I love so much our reaction

:20:30. > :20:32.after the conceded goal. My players reacted very

:20:33. > :20:34.well and try to score It was a morale-boosting

:20:35. > :20:39.victory on the road - in a competition that Leicester

:20:40. > :20:46.have never won. And the fourth round draw is live

:20:47. > :20:53.on BBC Two at 7:00pm. Derby are number 15

:20:54. > :21:06.and Leicester - 16. And in the last two minutes, another

:21:07. > :21:14.honour for Leicester City. She has been named Fever's Rutherford Wright

:21:15. > :21:17.-- named Fifa's world football coach of the year.

:21:18. > :21:21.In fact, former player Brian Laws told BBC Radio Nottingham listeners

:21:22. > :21:22.it was their worst performance of the season.

:21:23. > :21:26.So out of the cup they went at Wigan - their fifth straight defeat.

:21:27. > :21:28.The fans are desperate for the planned takeover to happen

:21:29. > :21:39.It looks unlikely to be tomorrow.

:21:40. > :21:41.The penalty miss pretty much summed up Forest's day,

:21:42. > :21:46.Meanwhile, Notts County fell to their tenth league defeat

:21:47. > :21:56.Their takeover by local businessman Alan Hardy has been delayed.

:21:57. > :22:03.He says that he is trying to conclude some issues.

:22:04. > :22:07.After their 3-0 win at the weekend, manager Steve Evans told the BBC
