:00:00. > :00:00.It's almost 6:30pm - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:00. > :00:09.Tonight - an NHS decision to deny some couples IVF treatment comes

:00:10. > :00:23.Matthew is an IVF baby and under the murals his mum would have been too

:00:24. > :00:28.old for treatment. I was 41 when I had Mattie and 40 when I went

:00:29. > :00:33.through the cycle. It would have deprived me of the chance and will

:00:34. > :00:40.deprive other woman my age. Also tonight, a man is killed for life

:00:41. > :00:44.for the brutal and motiveless murder of this much loved grandfather. He

:00:45. > :00:51.had no enemies and I don't understand why he was killed. Plus,

:00:52. > :00:57.the intensifying search for a diagnosis for IDL's baffling and

:00:58. > :01:03.distressing illness. In sport, we are with the best in the world.

:01:04. > :01:03.Behind the scenes at the National swimming Centre in Loughborough,

:01:04. > :01:15.with the new national coach. Welcome to Friday's

:01:16. > :01:22.programme with Anne Davies First tonight - fertility

:01:23. > :01:24.clinics have criticised a decision by the NHS in parts

:01:25. > :01:28.of the East Midlands to place We revealed on last night's

:01:29. > :01:32.programme how bosses in Newark, Sherwood, Mansfield and Ashfield had

:01:33. > :01:37.reluctantly decided Fertility experts fear other parts

:01:38. > :01:41.of the region may follow suit. They predict that more couples

:01:42. > :01:43.who can't afford private treatment Our health correspondent

:01:44. > :01:50.Rob Sissons has the details. His mum, Railene, says the latest

:01:51. > :01:55.decision is ridiculous. She got pregnant through IVF

:01:56. > :02:00.first time aged 40. I think it's a very

:02:01. > :02:05.disappointing decision. Ultimately, I wouldn't have been

:02:06. > :02:11.able to have that treatment. 40 when I was going

:02:12. > :02:14.through the cycle. Obviously it would have deprived me

:02:15. > :02:17.of the chance and will deprive other women my age of the chance

:02:18. > :02:20.to have a lovely baby, Railene met the NHS criteria

:02:21. > :02:25.in place everywhere across the East Midlands that woman

:02:26. > :02:29.needs to be 18 to 42 years old, not obese, not smoke and have

:02:30. > :02:36.no previous children. She's dismayed Newark, Sherwood,

:02:37. > :02:38.Mansfield and Ashfield NHS bosses have broken ranks and are changing

:02:39. > :02:41.the age for women to 25-34 and putting in an age limit for men,

:02:42. > :02:57.a maximum of 40 years old. created here in Nottingham. The

:02:58. > :03:01.experts fear that the NHS funding might be scrapped altogether. They

:03:02. > :03:05.say that now we need more consistency. We would like to be

:03:06. > :03:10.able to offer some sort of equity and friendly country. A national

:03:11. > :03:19.strategy would be far better and if everybody received this same

:03:20. > :03:25.funding. Here they have also criticised the latest ruling. IVF is

:03:26. > :03:31.very successful as a treatment. It comes back to the family of a child.

:03:32. > :03:35.People have different views that depend on the circumstances. For

:03:36. > :03:40.years, there were the same goes for IVF funding across the East

:03:41. > :03:47.Midlands. This decision means that parts of Nottinghamshire are broken

:03:48. > :03:51.away from the rest. There will be the same regulations here as other

:03:52. > :03:59.countries but within Nottinghamshire there will be a postcode lottery.

:04:00. > :03:59.The NHS faces some tough choices. Fertility experts wonder where the

:04:00. > :04:01.rationing will end. Rob - an emotive subject do we know

:04:02. > :04:14.when the controversial change You're right, it is very emotive. A

:04:15. > :04:19.decision will be made next week. I reckon that it will be the beginning

:04:20. > :04:26.of the next financial year. So something like April, wanted? Some

:04:27. > :04:35.people would say that the NHS should not pay for IVF. It is not go into

:04:36. > :04:40.slaves that much money in the overall scheme of NHS funding. -- it

:04:41. > :04:46.is not going to save as much money in the overall scheme. The question

:04:47. > :04:50.is what will happen to the people that cannot get a credit card or a

:04:51. > :04:52.lonely? Will they be able to have a baby.

:04:53. > :04:55.And the fertility experts fear that more areas of the East Midlands

:04:56. > :05:01.will review funding - do you think they will?

:05:02. > :05:12.I think a review is likely. The pressures on the NHS funding make

:05:13. > :05:15.this likely. When you consider in comparison with cancer treatment,

:05:16. > :05:23.which many people would consider to be at the top of the list. Some

:05:24. > :05:24.areas are not providing the recommended three cycles.

:05:25. > :05:27.A Derby man's been given a life sentence for the murder

:05:28. > :05:29.of his former step-grandfather, who died after being subjected

:05:30. > :05:32.74-year-old Satnam Singh was walking to his local Sikh Temple in July

:05:33. > :05:42.2015 when he was killed by Sukhraj Atwal.

:05:43. > :05:44.Atwal will now serve a minimum of 20 years in prison.

:05:45. > :05:59.Peaceful, spiritual and loving. That's how Viktor family described

:06:00. > :06:08.him. He was killed by a man that was once his step grandson. He was on

:06:09. > :06:18.his way to open his local gurdwara, Ricky volunteered. He was subjected

:06:19. > :06:23.to a brutal and most of us results. His injuries were so severe that

:06:24. > :06:30.police initially thought he had been hit by a car. The judge told Sukhraj

:06:31. > :06:33.Atwal that the attack must have involved you jumping and stabbing on

:06:34. > :06:39.the victim whilst he was on the ground. He says that you left him

:06:40. > :06:42.for dead, like a bag of rubbish. He had no enemies and I don't

:06:43. > :06:48.understand why he was killed. I still don't understand why he killed

:06:49. > :06:55.them. It was surprise and shock. I cannot believe that he dead. He was

:06:56. > :07:01.an inspiration to all volunteers. There is no match to his dedication.

:07:02. > :07:05.They're probably never will be. Even the judge said that the motive

:07:06. > :07:11.remains a skier at best. It started it might be due to a family dispute

:07:12. > :07:19.but Sukhraj Atwal never gave evidence. He was sentenced to a

:07:20. > :07:20.minimum of 20 years in prison and showed no emotion.

:07:21. > :07:25.Two men, the five biggest islands on earth, one world record.

:07:26. > :07:27.Borneo's already in the bag but the biggest challenges

:07:28. > :07:39.An amazing modern-day adventure coming up.

:07:40. > :07:41.Six teenagers, aged between 13 and 15, have been arrested

:07:42. > :07:46.after a man was critically injured in Leicester.

:07:47. > :07:49.The 27-year-old was taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre

:07:50. > :07:53.after being assaulted in the Aylestone area of the city.

:07:54. > :07:55.Amy Harris is at the scene for us this evening.

:07:56. > :08:07.Well, police are investigating an assault in Middleton Street,

:08:08. > :08:09.which is behind me, at the far end of the cordon.

:08:10. > :08:12.Officers were called at around 4:20am here to the historic

:08:13. > :08:15.They found a 27-year-old man, who was taken to hospital

:08:16. > :08:18.in Nottingham, where his condition is described as "critical".

:08:19. > :08:22.Three boys, aged 13, 14 and 15, and three girls,

:08:23. > :08:26.one 13 and two aged 14, have been arrested in connection

:08:27. > :08:29.with the incident and are currently in custody.

:08:30. > :08:33.Now, this police cordon has been in place all day and a number

:08:34. > :08:35.of surrounding roads closed as officers try to

:08:36. > :08:43.They are beginning to let pedestrians through.

:08:44. > :08:46.People living nearby have expressed their shock -

:08:47. > :08:48.one neighbour told me, you don't expect something

:08:49. > :08:55.Two men have now admitted murdering another man in Leicester last year.

:08:56. > :09:00.23-year-old Brendan Mason was found with 99 separate injuries

:09:01. > :09:02.after being lured to Abbey Park last July.

:09:03. > :09:07.Today 22-year-old Keith Lowe of Rockingham Close changed his plea

:09:08. > :09:13.21-year-old Joshua Hack of St Helen's Drive had already

:09:14. > :09:22.Both men will be sentenced on Monday.

:09:23. > :09:25.Last month we met a young woman from Mansfield who's battling

:09:26. > :09:29.a mystery illness which leaves blue patches on her face and causes her

:09:30. > :09:32.Adele Uden's condition has baffled doctors.

:09:33. > :09:35.We caught up with her today and found that she's now writing

:09:36. > :09:37.a blog to support other people with rare conditions.

:09:38. > :09:40.Consultants at one of London's biggest hospitals

:09:41. > :09:57.It's been five weeks since we first met Adele from Mansfield. The 2060

:09:58. > :10:01.watts has a condition that causes heavy bleeding, for which she is

:10:02. > :10:07.admitted to hospital frequently. There is still no explanation for

:10:08. > :10:12.the blue patches on her face. But she has been spurred to start her

:10:13. > :10:16.own website, where she has a regular blog. It's a way of helping other

:10:17. > :10:21.people in my situation not to feel so alone. For them to see that

:10:22. > :10:24.somebody is out there that understands. I don't like to say to

:10:25. > :10:28.somebody that I know how they feel because you don't, you never know

:10:29. > :10:33.how they feel. The health of the mother of one has baffled doctors.

:10:34. > :10:39.Gynaecologists at the Royal Hospital in London would like to see.

:10:40. > :10:43.Frustration at how long her proverbial is taking to be processed

:10:44. > :10:48.has prompted her mother to write to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

:10:49. > :10:52.It's incredibly frustrating because obviously there is a potential for

:10:53. > :10:57.help from my family and myself but for some reason there is a hold-up.

:10:58. > :11:02.She says that preparing for her wedding and upsetting her blog keeps

:11:03. > :11:07.focused on the positive. If I can help just one woman, man, trials,

:11:08. > :11:10.not feel as hopeless and alone as I've felt, then it'll be a job well

:11:11. > :11:16.done in my eyes. We wish her well. A family from Derbyshire is warning

:11:17. > :11:18.of the dangers of booking accommodation online

:11:19. > :11:20.after they found themselves The Bakers from Long Eaton had found

:11:21. > :11:26.a place to stay on the popular But after arriving in the Big Apple

:11:27. > :11:30.a few days before New Year, they realised it wasn't

:11:31. > :11:32.what they thought. It was meant to be the holiday

:11:33. > :11:39.of a lifetime, New Year in New York. But this family's trip

:11:40. > :11:42.quickly became a nightmare when they realised the apartment

:11:43. > :11:47.they'd booked didn't exist. The children were there,

:11:48. > :11:58.we're on the pavement with all the luggage,

:11:59. > :11:59.nighttime, cold, shivering. A bit worried that the whole holiday

:12:00. > :12:05.would be a bit spoiled. This is the place that the family

:12:06. > :12:08.booked to stay in. After realising they were getting

:12:09. > :12:11.a pretty good deal, they decided to call Hotels.com to double check

:12:12. > :12:16.everything was OK. They were told there

:12:17. > :12:18.wouldn't be a problem. In December, they rang again

:12:19. > :12:21.to check that there wouldn't be an issue with the property

:12:22. > :12:24.and were told again the same thing. When they arrived in New York

:12:25. > :12:29.and realised that the apartment didn't exist, they say Hotels.com

:12:30. > :12:31.didn't even offer them They didn't really care

:12:32. > :12:42.if we were sleeping in the park. That apartment should not be

:12:43. > :12:47.on Hotels.com's website. It should be vetted in the first

:12:48. > :12:50.place to make sure it's They say that normally

:12:51. > :13:17.when there is an issue they have... Despite being refunded

:13:18. > :13:20.by the company, the family say it RSPCA officers in Nottingham

:13:21. > :13:30.are trying to find the owners This five-foot milk snake was found

:13:31. > :13:38.yesterday just around the corner They're normally found

:13:39. > :13:41.in North and South America, and are non-venomous -

:13:42. > :13:43.unlike the similar This one was found cold and weak

:13:44. > :13:46.but is now recovering And police in Derby are trying

:13:47. > :13:54.to find the owners of some old wedding photos found

:13:55. > :13:56.in a city park. The pictures were discovered

:13:57. > :14:01.in Chaddesden Park on Valentine's Day by volunteers who

:14:02. > :14:03.were litter picking. They were found in this red jewelry

:14:04. > :14:07.box and appeared to have been Anybody who recognises them

:14:08. > :14:10.is being urged to contact A former Royal Marine Commando

:14:11. > :14:15.is hoping to set a world record by becoming the first human ever

:14:16. > :14:18.to cross the five largest Ant Lambert has already completed

:14:19. > :14:25.the first leg of his challenge after crossing Borneo,

:14:26. > :14:27.which is the third largest He is travelling with another former

:14:28. > :14:35.Marine, Louis Nethercott, and they are using the expedition

:14:36. > :14:37.to raise money for two So, Ant, what was the inspiration,

:14:38. > :14:42.why did you want to do this? Our motivation behind this

:14:43. > :14:45.was twofold, firstly we wanted to do something that no one had ever done

:14:46. > :14:55.in the history of exploration and adventure and secondly,

:14:56. > :14:57.perhaps most importantly given our background,

:14:58. > :14:58.it was to raise money for two military charities,

:14:59. > :15:01.Help For Heroes and the Royal Marines Charity, particularly

:15:02. > :15:03.focusing on mental health I know you've got to cross

:15:04. > :15:11.these five islands. The challenge we've set ourselves

:15:12. > :15:13.is to cross these five islands using only human

:15:14. > :15:17.power, self supported. I think this is you in Borneo,

:15:18. > :15:20.because you've already done Basically we were crossing

:15:21. > :15:27.a mountain range here and we realised we didn't have

:15:28. > :15:30.enough supplies to make it out the other side

:15:31. > :15:33.so we basically jacked up a raft This is where the training

:15:34. > :15:41.kicks in, I guess. Yeah, it was pretty brutal crossing

:15:42. > :15:44.Borneo and if it wasn't for our Marine training,

:15:45. > :15:46.the ethos and the discipline that that instils in you,

:15:47. > :15:50.we wouldn't have been able to do it. The practicalities,

:15:51. > :15:55.what about things like fresh water? Fresh water, we've got

:15:56. > :15:57.purification with us. It doesn't make the water taste very

:15:58. > :16:00.nice but we can drink it. Do you take food with you or do

:16:01. > :16:09.you kind of take berries Along the way, we pick up

:16:10. > :16:17.supplies as and when we can. At some points, we were carrying up

:16:18. > :16:20.to 14 days worth of food What is going to be

:16:21. > :16:26.the biggest challenge, then? The complexities and the different

:16:27. > :16:31.natures of all the islands present numerous different challenges

:16:32. > :16:33.but Baffin Island is probably It's up in the Arctic Circle

:16:34. > :16:39.and it's basically like Well, it's Papua New Guinea

:16:40. > :16:46.next in April, isn't it? And you can follow their journey

:16:47. > :16:58.on the website Expedition 5. The pick of the bunch -

:16:59. > :17:09.a selection of your snowdrop photos. And it's not just the snowdrops. We

:17:10. > :17:10.are expecting to see more mild weather over the weekend. There will

:17:11. > :17:23.be more flowers starting to appear. Royal Marines to snowdrops. Funny

:17:24. > :17:25.that. Let's find out what's

:17:26. > :17:26.happening in the sport. First Leicester City manager

:17:27. > :17:29.Claudio Ranieri could risk an FA Cup upset tomorrow by making as many

:17:30. > :17:32.as ten changes to his team, For squad players, though,

:17:33. > :17:36.a chance to shine. And someone grabbing that

:17:37. > :17:38.opportunity with both hands is number two keeper

:17:39. > :17:39.Ron-Robert Zieler. He arrived to a team of champions

:17:40. > :17:57.and is now battling relegation. But Ron-Robert Zieler

:17:58. > :17:59.has no regrets. I would rather play fighting

:18:00. > :18:02.for the title again or playing for the European positions

:18:03. > :18:04.but at the moment it's For five seasons, he never missed

:18:05. > :18:12.a game with his former club in Hanover, departing

:18:13. > :18:14.when they were relegated, something It's very hard and especially,

:18:15. > :18:21.I think, mentally. Football doesn't change

:18:22. > :18:23.but when you are in the situation and you need to win games

:18:24. > :18:26.and perform, it's not In football, Germany

:18:27. > :18:37.rules the world again. Ron-Robert Zieler has enjoyed

:18:38. > :18:42.football's ultimate highs, a World Cup winner in 2014,

:18:43. > :18:45.low points, as well, as he battles at Leicester to emerge

:18:46. > :18:48.from the shadow of first choice I'm second choice -

:18:49. > :18:52.so it's definitely a new experience. Not something I'm really happy

:18:53. > :18:56.with but I have to get on with it. I get frustrated if we don't get

:18:57. > :19:02.the results we want to get because you can't really help,

:19:03. > :19:04.you're not on the pitch. You can't really do anything

:19:05. > :19:07.about it and even though I'm not playing it really hard for me

:19:08. > :19:14.to see us losing. An FA Cup tie against Millwall,

:19:15. > :19:17.a chance to stake a claim for his shirt and give his team

:19:18. > :19:19.a much-needed confidence boost. If we can get a result,

:19:20. > :19:22.hopefully we can take it into a positive and take it

:19:23. > :19:25.into the next couple of weeks. For Zieler, not the season

:19:26. > :19:27.he'd hoped for but this Because at the end of it,

:19:28. > :19:34.I've played in the Premier League, I've played in the Champions League,

:19:35. > :19:38.I've played in the FA Cup, I've played every competition this

:19:39. > :19:41.year but I haven't played as much game as I'd wanted to play

:19:42. > :19:43.but that's a situation At Nottingham Forest

:19:44. > :19:48.a boost for moral ahead of the home game against

:19:49. > :19:52.Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow. Manager Gary Brazil has revealed

:19:53. > :19:55.that Chris Cohen is back in training with the first team after a series

:19:56. > :19:57.of horrendous injuries. Now, it will be an interesting

:19:58. > :20:04.weekend for Notts County manager Kevin Nolan as his new team

:20:05. > :20:10.play his old team Leyton Orient. And that's the place where

:20:11. > :20:12.he started his managerial career. But he was sacked by Orient after 15

:20:13. > :20:16.games despite winning seven of them. It's an important tie, too,

:20:17. > :20:19.with both teams in trouble Confirmation of the

:20:20. > :20:32.fixture here then. Notts, who are fourth bottom

:20:33. > :20:34.in League Two, play an Orient side Meanwhile Mansfield

:20:35. > :20:37.are on their travels to the seaside - well, nearly -

:20:38. > :20:40.they play at Grimsby Town. One other surprise bit

:20:41. > :20:42.of football news from today - Ilkeston Town have appointed former

:20:43. > :20:44.Premier League striker and Manchester City legend

:20:45. > :20:47.Shaun Goater as their new manager. In rugby, Leicester Tigers want

:20:48. > :20:49.a win at home to Bristol in the Premiership tomorrow to help

:20:50. > :20:52.push them back towards contention The key for us is making sure

:20:53. > :21:02.we have prepared well and we show the same hunger and desire as we did

:21:03. > :21:06.last week at the start of the game, which is a good reflection of how

:21:07. > :21:09.much you want it yourselves. We've talked about our own

:21:10. > :21:11.resilience over the last two or three weeks, we've trained to be

:21:12. > :21:14.more resilient in games and I'm sure they will test us

:21:15. > :21:17.because they are a good team. Now, time for an exclusive

:21:18. > :21:19.behind the scenes look at the national swimming centre

:21:20. > :21:21.at Loughbrough University with the new national lead

:21:22. > :21:33.swimming coach Mel Marshall. Mel, who coaches Olympic champion

:21:34. > :21:35.Adam Peaty, is speaking publically for the first time

:21:36. > :22:02.about her new role. . And it has been for Mel Marshall.

:22:03. > :22:07.She has coached Adam Peaty it was sporting stadia.

:22:08. > :22:11.COMMENTATOR: Olympian champion, Gold medal for Adam Peaty of Great

:22:12. > :22:15.Britain. She won an Olympic coach of the year and got the job she has

:22:16. > :22:21.always dreamt of in January. I'm in charge of the centre in

:22:22. > :22:25.Loughborough. I'm in charge of 17 athletes but I work intimately with

:22:26. > :22:33.a group of seven. She always said to me that that was my Olympics in Rio.

:22:34. > :22:39.But this was her Olympics. Pretty much everybody around the world as

:22:40. > :22:48.going for this job. It is good to have somebody that has been at the

:22:49. > :22:52.Centre for so long. She has been in Loughborough for so long. She has

:22:53. > :22:57.worked for eight years as head coach at the city of Derby swimming club.

:22:58. > :23:02.She has gone for battling for time at schools and the council run pools

:23:03. > :23:08.to this, and elite centre which is everything in and out of the pool.

:23:09. > :23:12.You've just got everything you need. The world-class gem, world-class

:23:13. > :23:20.preparation every, world-class staff and world-class athletes. She is

:23:21. > :23:27.responsible not just for Adam Peaty but for the culture and behaviour of

:23:28. > :23:32.the centre. In British swimming, we are big on behaviours. If you have

:23:33. > :23:38.world class every day, you will be eventually world-class. It was the

:23:39. > :23:45.sport's best performance at the Rio Olympics since 1908. This team are

:23:46. > :23:53.striving for more. I've read somewhere the other day that leaders

:23:54. > :23:56.it last. Everybody else comes before you but you still see everybody in

:23:57. > :24:05.the right direction. I think that is my role here. As the leader that

:24:06. > :24:15.aids last, she is hungry to drive Adam Peaty and British swimming up

:24:16. > :24:16.the medal table in 2020. Exciting times for British swimming. Wouldn't

:24:17. > :24:19.it be amazing to do a job like that? For many spotting the first signs

:24:20. > :24:22.of snowdrops is a signal that And it seems the East Midlands

:24:23. > :24:26.is covered in drifts So we've tried to capture

:24:27. > :24:28.the seasonal magic, with a bit of help from some

:24:29. > :25:19.very talented photographers. And if you want to see more

:25:20. > :25:27.photos of the snowdrops, you can visit our Facebook page

:25:28. > :25:43.for some spring life. We've had some fantastic pictures

:25:44. > :25:47.sent in the course of today. This one is Castle Donington. These

:25:48. > :25:51.happen when you have supercool droplets of water in the clouds that

:25:52. > :25:56.are starting to turn to ice crystals. They've released some heat

:25:57. > :26:05.and that makes the water evaporate. As for this, this is a sample. These

:26:06. > :26:08.occur at sunrise and sunset. Ice crystals start to fall through the

:26:09. > :26:15.higher level of clouds and it reflects through the sun. As for the

:26:16. > :26:20.pressure charts, some cold front coming in our direction. These are

:26:21. > :26:24.weak and expected to bring some drizzle we shall we. This was the

:26:25. > :26:31.picture earlier one, it started to break up and we saw some sunshine.

:26:32. > :26:35.Over the course of tonight, we expect to see some cloudy conditions

:27:12. > :27:15.Sunday. Next week, over an error on the map, towards others. That

:27:16. > :27:20.indicates warmer conditions coming from the tropics. We are expecting

:27:21. > :27:23.temperatures in double figures with the next few days, but getting to
