:00:00. > :00:22.Brendan Mason suffered 99 separate injuries inflicted by two men he

:00:23. > :00:26.thought where his friends. Shocked and devastated is an understatement

:00:27. > :00:29.on how we felt when we had the police at our house, telling us they

:00:30. > :00:35.had recovered a body and they believed it to be Brendan. Also,

:00:36. > :00:40.teaching assistants in Derby ramp up their dispute with the council with

:00:41. > :00:44.a planned five-day strike. Plus, the Nottinghamshire policeman who risked

:00:45. > :00:48.his life rescuing a man from the freezing River Trent. It's one of

:00:49. > :00:52.those few days where we get to go home and think, I did actually make

:00:53. > :00:57.a difference today, and it was certainly one of those days. From

:00:58. > :01:06.field to factory, the making of sugar in the East Midlands.

:01:07. > :01:09.Welcome to Monday's programme with Anne Davies

:01:10. > :01:17.Two men have been sentenced to a total of 41 years and six

:01:18. > :01:20.months in jail for the brutal murder of a man with learning difficulties

:01:21. > :01:27.Brendan Mason suffered 99 injuries last July at the hands

:01:28. > :01:32.of Joshua Hack and Keith Lowe, two men he considered to be friends.

:01:33. > :01:47.Brendan Mason, described as a happy young man, with his life before him.

:01:48. > :01:50.But last year, the 23-year-old, who had numerous learning difficulties

:01:51. > :01:56.and poor vision, was fatally attacked in a park by Joshua Hack

:01:57. > :02:01.and Keith Lowe, two men he considered to be friends. His family

:02:02. > :02:04.say they will never be closure. Shocked and devastated is an

:02:05. > :02:07.understatement on how we felt when we had the police at our house,

:02:08. > :02:13.telling us they had recovered a body, and they believed it to be

:02:14. > :02:16.Brendan. It isn't right how two evil can do such a horrific thing and

:02:17. > :02:21.leave such a massive hole in our lives but will never be filled

:02:22. > :02:25.again. After misinterpreting Brendan's behaviour towards a girl

:02:26. > :02:29.at a party, they'd hear him to Abbey Park in Leicester in the early hours

:02:30. > :02:36.of a morning on the 5th of July last year. Here, they subjected him to a

:02:37. > :02:39.brutal attack on mobile phone, inflicting 99 injuries before

:02:40. > :02:45.stripping him naked and placing him in a pond to avoid forensic tracing.

:02:46. > :02:50.After leaving Brendan is dead, the pair were caught on CCTV at this

:02:51. > :02:54.McDonald's restaurant. Their victim died later in hospital, after

:02:55. > :03:01.suffering brain damage, five fractured ribs and collapsed lungs

:03:02. > :03:05.lungs. 21-year-old Hack admitted murder at an earlier hearing but

:03:06. > :03:10.22-year-old Lowe had originally denied the attack. But last week

:03:11. > :03:15.days into the trial, fresh footage emerged of him landing blows on

:03:16. > :03:20.Brendan. He was forced to change his plea. We felt we had a substantial

:03:21. > :03:26.case at the start of the trial. Finding the video at the last minute

:03:27. > :03:31.bolstered that and gave Mr Lowe no opportunity to carry on. It was an

:03:32. > :03:35.horrific crime and Brendan's family have been deeply distressed. It was

:03:36. > :03:40.a horrific attack. Today they were jailed for life, they will serve a

:03:41. > :03:41.minimum of 41 years and six months between them. Sentencing them, the

:03:42. > :04:04.judge said... Brendan's family are now trying to

:04:05. > :04:07.rebuild their lives. They say there simply aren't enough words to

:04:08. > :04:08.describe their heartbreak. The question they continue to ask is

:04:09. > :04:12.why? Amy, do you know if there was any

:04:13. > :04:20.reason for the attack? The court heard the attack had been

:04:21. > :04:23.planned, as I said in my report there after Hack and Lowe

:04:24. > :04:25.misinterpreted Brendan's behaviour towards a girl at a party,

:04:26. > :04:38.though it was stressed Hack and Lowe In one of their videos their head

:04:39. > :04:42.saying to him, this is what happens to paedophiles. The Crown advocates

:04:43. > :04:47.said nothing could be further from the truth. It was stressed that Hack

:04:48. > :04:54.and Lowe didn't intend to kill Brendan. They said it was a grievous

:04:55. > :05:00.bodily harm case not an intention to kill, adding he is tremendously sad

:05:01. > :05:01.he ever embarked on this. Lowe's representatives said he is ashamed

:05:02. > :05:06.and sorry for his actions. Unison has said its members

:05:07. > :05:09.are to step-up their industrial action in Derby over

:05:10. > :05:10.the long-running dispute between school support staff

:05:11. > :05:12.and the City Council. That's despite some parents saying

:05:13. > :05:15.they have now lost sympathy for teaching assistants

:05:16. > :05:17.following more than 50 days Today, TAs began a 24-hour vigil

:05:18. > :05:21.outside the council house. Our reporter Carolyn

:05:22. > :05:38.Moses is there now. Good evening. Just below the clock

:05:39. > :05:41.you can see in some miserable weather, the teaching assistants

:05:42. > :05:45.preparing to camp out in shifts through the night, as part of this

:05:46. > :05:51.24-hour vigil until 12 o'clock tomorrow. It all began just before

:05:52. > :05:55.midday today with the show of force. Around 150 teaching assistants

:05:56. > :05:59.marching through the streets, angry, showing their anger that their pay

:06:00. > :06:04.has been slashed by up to a quarter as part of a City Council pay

:06:05. > :06:09.review. After nine months of this protest and dispute, they are still

:06:10. > :06:15.no further on in this dispute. Still at an impact. As they prepared to

:06:16. > :06:20.bed down, the union is digging in. It's announced five further full

:06:21. > :06:25.days of action next week. But as we report, it comes as the patience of

:06:26. > :06:30.parents caught up in this dispute is starting to wear thin. Parents and

:06:31. > :06:34.school support staff protesting together against Derby City Council,

:06:35. > :06:41.just last month. But many parents say they've now had enough of both

:06:42. > :06:45.sides. Gemma Walker's 's son has severe learning difficulties and

:06:46. > :06:49.relies on teaching assistants. His son has to close with every strike.

:06:50. > :06:53.They were both that the council protest but now feel they can't

:06:54. > :07:00.trust either side. They are using our children as pawns, our children

:07:01. > :07:06.are just pawns. Is that really how you feel? Definitely, without a

:07:07. > :07:11.doubt. A recent letter from Unison to members urged them to increase

:07:12. > :07:16.disruption at schools. Jamie says despite still appreciating what they

:07:17. > :07:21.give her son, it's shaken her trust in the union. I cried because I wish

:07:22. > :07:25.they could see the impact this has had on the families. I've never felt

:07:26. > :07:31.that my son has been a burden on society before until now. And that

:07:32. > :07:35.is how we feel. At two schools in the city, almost every parent we

:07:36. > :07:46.spoke to this afternoon have lost at least some sympathy for the TAs.

:07:47. > :07:49.I've lost sympathy to be honest blue bear thinking of themselves, not the

:07:50. > :07:52.children. I understand they are losing money but it's the kids

:07:53. > :07:58.education that suffering is. You still sympathise but not as much.

:07:59. > :08:04.We're going to be put in a situation where we feel like we shouldn't be

:08:05. > :08:07.behind them. I'm behind them, 100%. Meanwhile for Gemma this has been

:08:08. > :08:11.the final straw. If Unison said we need our support for the next battle

:08:12. > :08:19.against the City Council what would you say? I would say no, I'm doing

:08:20. > :08:23.my own thing. With me now is Nicole Berisford from Unison. We are

:08:24. > :08:28.hearing that parental support is waning yet you're ramping up your

:08:29. > :08:33.action, five days up next week, why? We need to let the council know that

:08:34. > :08:39.our members are serious. They are serious about their campaign, they

:08:40. > :08:45.are serious about taking action. They've lost 25% of their pay. I'd

:08:46. > :08:50.like to apologise to parents on behalf of Unison for the disruption

:08:51. > :08:53.and thank them for their support. However they need to put the

:08:54. > :08:57.pressure on the council to meaningfully sit round the table and

:08:58. > :09:02.speak to us. Aren't the parents and the pupils becoming political pawns,

:09:03. > :09:06.just to make the council act? Well, I don't believe they are. If they

:09:07. > :09:11.are becoming political pawns that is a decision the Council are making by

:09:12. > :09:14.not meaningfully talking to Unison. The council have cancelled two out

:09:15. > :09:22.of three meetings in the last two weeks and walked away from the table

:09:23. > :09:27.with Acas. Me more than willing to sit down with them but they need to

:09:28. > :09:31.be to do that to resolve this dispute. The council are saying our

:09:32. > :09:36.members action is having little or no impact, we know that's not true.

:09:37. > :09:41.Parents know that's not true. How far are you prepared to go? It's

:09:42. > :09:45.going to continue until the council sit back round the table and resolve

:09:46. > :09:50.this dispute. They have the financial means to do that. Sit and

:09:51. > :09:53.talk to us. We asked for the council to be interviewed, they couldn't be

:09:54. > :09:57.available for interview but they issued a statement. They say they

:09:58. > :10:03.are committed to ending this dispute and asking Unison to suspend its

:10:04. > :10:07.action, but it says it is devastating children's education and

:10:08. > :10:11.hurting families. It seems as we go on, there are long hours ahead with

:10:12. > :10:15.the two sides further apart than ever.

:10:16. > :10:17.A 14-year-old charged with attempted murder has appeared

:10:18. > :10:21.It follows an incident in Aylestone in the early

:10:22. > :10:22.hours of Friday morning, where a 27-year-old man

:10:23. > :10:25.The teenager has also been charged with possession

:10:26. > :10:32.He's due to appear at Crown Court on the 20th of March.

:10:33. > :10:35.A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death

:10:36. > :10:37.by dangerous driving after a 14-year-old boy died

:10:38. > :10:42.It happened at around eight o'clock yesterday

:10:43. > :10:46.evening on Fordbridge Lane in South Normanton, when a push

:10:47. > :10:51.The driver of the car is also being held on suspicion of failing

:10:52. > :10:56.to stop at the scene and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

:10:57. > :11:05.A doctor who was sent to a Nottingham school to support

:11:06. > :11:08.A Nottinghamshire Police officer has been commended for his 'true

:11:09. > :11:11.courage' after he risked his life diving into the River Trent to

:11:12. > :11:15.PC James Patterson swam out 50 metres in the freezing waters

:11:16. > :11:20.PC Patterson's bosses said he gave no thought

:11:21. > :11:22.for his own safety and described his actions as inspirational.

:11:23. > :11:33.When the call came in I was across the other side... PC James Patterson

:11:34. > :11:36.was on duty at the football on Saturday when a call came through

:11:37. > :11:41.that a man was in the River Trent in Nottingham. He and his colleague

:11:42. > :11:46.Paul Easter ran to the scene, to find the man 50 metres from the

:11:47. > :11:50.side. My immediate reaction was, it's too far out to do anything

:11:51. > :11:54.other than somebody to get into the water. PC Paterson stripped out of

:11:55. > :11:58.his uniform, dived into the water with a life buoy and swam out to the

:11:59. > :12:05.man. Colleagues managed to pull them both back to the bank. The officers

:12:06. > :12:10.on the side had managed to revive him and he was up and breathing. It

:12:11. > :12:14.was quite an overwhelming sensation what had just happened. A

:12:15. > :12:19.competitive swimmer since he was eight, PC Paterson is now a member

:12:20. > :12:23.of the British police swimming team. Also a qualified diver, he spent the

:12:24. > :12:27.last eight years in the underwater search unit. Did you give any

:12:28. > :12:31.thought at that stage to your own safety? I think at that point

:12:32. > :12:34.instinct kicked in and I did what had been trained to do as a police

:12:35. > :12:39.officer and a life-saver. The man who was rescued is now said to be

:12:40. > :12:42.awake and talking, and recovering with his family in the Queen 's

:12:43. > :12:47.medical Centre. Nottinghamshire Police said James and his three

:12:48. > :12:53.colleagues conducted themselves in a truly inspirational way. His

:12:54. > :12:56.Sergeant Julian Smedley said PC Paterson displayed true courage,

:12:57. > :13:02.selfless commitment and determination. He gave no thought

:13:03. > :13:07.for his own safety. Amazing stuff and worthy of a commendation. We

:13:08. > :13:13.come across various scenarios and situations where there is also of

:13:14. > :13:17.outcomes. And I think it's just one of those few days where we get to go

:13:18. > :13:19.home and think, I did actually make a difference today. And it was one

:13:20. > :13:26.of those days. What a hero. It's one of our best known acronyms

:13:27. > :13:29.but if you need reminding, it refers to young people not

:13:30. > :13:31.in education, Now a campaign's underway

:13:32. > :13:34.in Nottingham to show them Careers advisers have been out

:13:35. > :13:38.to meet the neets and give them face-to-face advice on the best ways

:13:39. > :13:41.of finding a job It's a campaign that's running

:13:42. > :13:48.on a need to know basis, using an information trailer

:13:49. > :13:51.and knocking on doors, career advisers want to track down

:13:52. > :13:54.and talk to people aged 16 to 24, With just under 300 16-18-year-olds

:13:55. > :14:06.identified as Neets, Nottingham is well under

:14:07. > :14:09.the National average. But the City Council has pledged

:14:10. > :14:12.that every 18-24-year-old is guaranteed a job,

:14:13. > :14:13.training or a place So we want them to be aware

:14:14. > :14:18.of all of the great support that's available to them,

:14:19. > :14:20.the things that can help them get We also want parents and carers

:14:21. > :14:24.to be aware of really good support that's available,

:14:25. > :14:28.because they often tell us there isn't anything for young

:14:29. > :14:30.people, and there is. Career advisers Tessa and Diane went

:14:31. > :14:33.to talk to 21-year-old Charlie, He left school at 16,

:14:34. > :14:36.but hasn't managed to secure a full-time job in what he'd love

:14:37. > :14:40.to do, which is landscape gardening. So what kind of help

:14:41. > :14:43.are you thinking you would benefit from, that the careers service might

:14:44. > :14:47.be able to give you? I think I would need help

:14:48. > :14:50.with CVs, applications It's boosted my confidence

:14:51. > :15:01.in looking for a job, now I know what to do,

:15:02. > :15:05.how to do it. And how much do you

:15:06. > :15:07.want to find a job? It's one thing that

:15:08. > :15:12.I really want to do most. We find these doorstep visits

:15:13. > :15:14.essential, because a lot of the young people we are working

:15:15. > :15:18.with are perhaps not ready to be Sometimes they find

:15:19. > :15:20.that a bit daunting. I think it's brilliant,

:15:21. > :15:23.these people seem to be taking a keen interest in young people,

:15:24. > :15:26.and it can only do good. And if it motivates a few

:15:27. > :15:28.young people into work, Hopefully, yes, then he can

:15:29. > :15:37.start paying his board. Career advisers will be visiting

:15:38. > :15:39.the homes throughout the week. Quentin Rayner, BBC

:15:40. > :15:44.East Midlands today, Nottingham. Drivers are being consulted over

:15:45. > :15:47.plans to extend the smart motorway The system already runs on the M1

:15:48. > :15:52.in Nottinghamshire with electronic signs indicating variable speed

:15:53. > :15:54.limits, and telling drivers to use Now Highways England

:15:55. > :16:01.wants your views on creating a smart motorway between Junction 25

:16:02. > :16:06.and Junction 23A. The 7.5 mile stretch would cost

:16:07. > :16:11.an estimated ?120 million. Motorway bosses say it's needed

:16:12. > :16:16.to cope with an increase in traffic. Nottinghamshire County Council

:16:17. > :16:18.has announced a U-turn on its controversial school

:16:19. > :16:20.admissions policy, which saw some siblings being split up and sent

:16:21. > :16:26.to different schools. It follows a ruling by

:16:27. > :16:30.the Schools Adjudicator last month. The Adjudicator said

:16:31. > :16:32.that to remove a policy, which gave priority to children

:16:33. > :16:35.who lived outside the catchment area but already had siblings

:16:36. > :16:39.at the school, was unfair. The council has today

:16:40. > :16:41.announced that for 2018, Now how many rugby players does it

:16:42. > :16:49.take to push an ambulance? Well this weekend,

:16:50. > :16:51.East Midlands Ambulance Service found out when they got stuck

:16:52. > :16:54.in the mud next to a Players from Aylestone Athletic

:16:55. > :16:57.and Aylestone Saint James had to join forces to push

:16:58. > :17:01.the vehicle free. The Ambulance Service has thanked

:17:02. > :17:03.the players for their help. The club have confirmed the injured

:17:04. > :17:18.player was checked out More heroes on the programme

:17:19. > :17:21.tonight! For rugby players walk in the park.

:17:22. > :17:24.Leicester City have complained to the Football Association

:17:25. > :17:26.about the treatment of their supporters

:17:27. > :17:35.Home fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate the League One

:17:36. > :17:37.teams shock victory over the Premier League Champions.

:17:38. > :17:39.Leicester say they've had numerous complaints of abuse,

:17:40. > :17:41.provocation and intimidation of players, officials

:17:42. > :17:45.and supporters from the moment they arrived at the ground.

:17:46. > :17:48.Mounted police were needed to keep home fans away from the Leicester

:17:49. > :17:51.Meanwhile the manager Claudio Ranieri has called

:17:52. > :17:54.for an immediate reaction to that shock defeat.

:17:55. > :17:57.Leicester are heading for Seville for the first leg of their last 16

:17:58. > :18:04.And Colin Hazelden has just sent this from Spain.

:18:05. > :18:06.You know, you can't really visit Spain without coming to one

:18:07. > :18:11.But you find it looking a bit like Leicester City's season

:18:12. > :18:17.And how badly do Leicester City need some sort of result

:18:18. > :18:22.But, they're going to Sevilla, a couple of hours inland.

:18:23. > :18:24.And Sevilla, they're third in La Liga, they're just two

:18:25. > :18:32.And this weekend, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri put out his squad

:18:33. > :18:35.players for the Cup tie at Millwall, saving his first team for Europe.

:18:36. > :18:38.They played well enough in the first half, but missed their chances.

:18:39. > :18:43.They were given an advantage early in the second half,

:18:44. > :18:46.when Jake Cooper was sent off for a second bookable offence,

:18:47. > :18:49.but Leicester once again paid for the lack of goals.

:18:50. > :18:52.They failed to score for the seventh time in ten

:18:53. > :18:54.competitive games in 2017, and Millwall struck

:18:55. > :19:00.A 90th minute winner was the Foxes' first FA Cup defeat to a side

:19:01. > :19:02.in the third tier or lower, since they were knocked out

:19:03. > :19:10.Another big blow in what is becoming an embarrassing 2017.

:19:11. > :19:13.So life far from a beach for Leicester City.

:19:14. > :19:16.You know, this draw against Sevilla looked so exciting when it came out

:19:17. > :19:21.Now, there's a very real danger that Leicester's last chance of glory

:19:22. > :19:23.in this season that should have been a victory lap will

:19:24. > :19:35.Colin Hazelden, BBC East Midlands Today in Spain.

:19:36. > :19:39.Colin will be reporting from Seville tomorrow night.

:19:40. > :19:42.Elsewhere - Notts County's Jon Stead has been named in the English

:19:43. > :19:46.His goals could have a massive impact on County's season.

:19:47. > :19:48.But neighbours Nottingham Forest prepare for their important game

:19:49. > :19:50.at Wigan this week with another defeat behind them.

:19:51. > :19:53.Nottingham Forest came up against in form Sheffield Wednesday,

:19:54. > :19:55.and got a chance to go in front with this penalty.

:19:56. > :19:58.Not intentional, said the ref, so the keeper wasn't sent off,

:19:59. > :20:01.A minute later, and Wednesday were ahead.

:20:02. > :20:04.There was no stopping this from Almen Abdi.

:20:05. > :20:07.Forestieri showed neat touches to get the second,

:20:08. > :20:10.and then two of the five Academy products in the Forest team combined

:26:49. > :26:52.It's this rain in the wings that will pick up the breeze and bring

:26:53. > :26:55.some outbreaks of rain through the night. That will clear in the

:26:56. > :26:59.morning through to Wednesday and bind it a fresher feel but some

:27:00. > :27:05.bright intervals. We will feel some noticeably cooler weather as we drag

:27:06. > :27:11.in some cooler air from the north-east. A cooler field to the

:27:12. > :27:15.weather. By the time we get to Friday we could even see some wintry
