:00:00. > :00:00.It's almost six thirty. so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00. > :00:00.You're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:00. > :00:07.Tonight - putting out the welcome mat for

:00:08. > :00:24.There are calls for councils here to accept more teenagers are fleeing

:00:25. > :00:28.the world's trouble spots. Also, sax and sugary drinks. Why are our main

:00:29. > :00:34.sugar producer thinks it will not work. -- attacks on sugary drinks.

:00:35. > :00:40.This is a simplistic approach which looks like a silver bullet which

:00:41. > :00:47.simply does not exist. Anger as caravan owners in Derbyshire are

:00:48. > :00:51.told to leave this site immediately. Tigers' player talking about

:00:52. > :00:58.depression. I did not believe there was anything more from the near

:00:59. > :01:00.future and if that was the case, I wanted to die. -- there was not

:01:01. > :01:05.anything for me in the future. Good evening and welcome

:01:06. > :01:07.to Tuesday's programme with Dominic Heale

:01:08. > :01:09.and me, Anne Davies. First tonight - should we be doing

:01:10. > :01:13.more to help unaccompanied Community groups here

:01:14. > :01:17.certainly think so. Tonight they're asking some

:01:18. > :01:20.of our councils to take in more teenagers fleeing some

:01:21. > :01:23.of the world's most And while the Government appears

:01:24. > :01:29.to be rowing back on a promise to accept more young refugees,

:01:30. > :01:32.we can reveal that the East Midlands could get a new regional team

:01:33. > :01:35.of specialist social workers, Our Social Affairs Correspondent,

:01:36. > :01:38.Jeremy Ball, is at Nottingham Trent This is where campaigners

:01:39. > :01:46.are about to unveil details of a detailed report

:01:47. > :01:48.on Nottingham's refugees and a string of recommendations

:01:49. > :01:52.for everyone from councils, A real priority is those

:01:53. > :01:58."unaccompanied children" - teenagers who arrive

:01:59. > :02:00.here, from as far afield Scattered across Europe

:02:01. > :02:07.in winter, tens of thousands of unaccompanied children,

:02:08. > :02:09.many fending for themselves. The Archbishop of Canterbury says

:02:10. > :02:12.Britain must do more and has warned that child refugees face

:02:13. > :02:15.being exploited or even killed after the Government announced one

:02:16. > :02:18.relocation programme This man told me his 16-year-old

:02:19. > :02:26.brother was stranded in the notorious Jungle near Calais

:02:27. > :02:29.but he has been refused permission to bring Solomon to Nottingham under

:02:30. > :02:36.family reunion rights, so now he is offering

:02:37. > :02:38.to take a DNA test. TRANSLATION: All his

:02:39. > :02:40.friends have left. Like most unaccompanied children,

:02:41. > :02:52.he does not have a family here so he was age assessed to check

:02:53. > :02:57.he is under 18 and taken into care. Today this report from the campaign

:02:58. > :03:00.group Nottingham Citizens has urged the city and county councils to take

:03:01. > :03:04.in more teenagers. It wants them to reach

:03:05. > :03:07.the Government's maximum limit for unaccompanied children -

:03:08. > :03:10.one for every 1400 youngsters It also want those children

:03:11. > :03:18.to get school or college Council say they do not have enough

:03:19. > :03:22.foster carers or Government funding to support more unaccompanied

:03:23. > :03:26.children, and now they are We need to increase the number

:03:27. > :03:29.of placements but also reduce the cost local authorities

:03:30. > :03:31.are ocurring looking We could pool that have some social

:03:32. > :03:35.workers potentially work across various regions,

:03:36. > :03:37.and that enable specialisation The Home Office says it bought more

:03:38. > :03:44.than 900 unaccompanied children from the continent last year,

:03:45. > :03:47.but it needs to balance their needs with local

:03:48. > :03:49.councils capacity to cope. There will be more calls

:03:50. > :03:51.for Government action Let's talk to Helen Murphy,

:03:52. > :04:04.who's one of the organisers here. You're asking for something

:04:05. > :04:06.like a three-fold increase, in the numbers cared

:04:07. > :04:07.for in Nottinghamshire. But councils are struggling to find

:04:08. > :04:22.the money to support In many ways it is a hypothetical

:04:23. > :04:26.question and we really need the Government to act as they promised

:04:27. > :04:36.to bring 3000 over and above got 350. I really believe the City

:04:37. > :04:39.Council and county and charities, community organisations, churches

:04:40. > :04:43.are up for working together and being united on making a difference

:04:44. > :04:49.for the young people. It will put you pressure on Foster and school

:04:50. > :04:53.places? It has a lot of moral obligation to do something and I

:04:54. > :04:59.feel the city with all the different groups are working together -- are

:05:00. > :05:03.up for working together. We have done so much already over the past

:05:04. > :05:06.few years to help resettle young people in this city.

:05:07. > :05:11.The Government is warning encouraging people to copy your

:05:12. > :05:17.alone could incentivise them to make dangerous journeys. -- to come here

:05:18. > :05:21.alone. We want people to make journeys that are legal and safe and

:05:22. > :05:27.the Government have closable routes to make that happen. Thank you.

:05:28. > :05:30.There will be more on the late news title at 10:30pm. -- the Government

:05:31. > :05:32.have closed those routes. Still to come - could HS2

:05:33. > :05:34.threaten the building of much-needed new homes

:05:35. > :05:36.in a Leicestershire village? It's feared changes to the route

:05:37. > :05:39.of the new rail line could lead to the scrapping of plans for 300

:05:40. > :05:41.houses in Kegworth. Now for the second of our reports

:05:42. > :05:51.this week on sugar. The company that runs the only sugar

:05:52. > :05:54.factory in the East Midlands is urging the Government

:05:55. > :05:57.to rethink its tax on sugar British Sugar says the controversial

:05:58. > :06:02.levy due to come into force next year hasn't been

:06:03. > :06:05.properly thought out. But health campaigners insist

:06:06. > :06:08.the measure is desperately needed Our health correspondent Rob Sissons

:06:09. > :06:16.has been looking at how The UK sugar tax is aimed

:06:17. > :06:23.at these high-sugar drinks, particularly fizzy drinks,

:06:24. > :06:25.which are popular among teenagers. The Office for Budget Responsibility

:06:26. > :06:28.predicts it'll add 24p a litre to drinks containing more than 8g

:06:29. > :06:31.of sugar per 100ml and 18p a litre to drinks containing more

:06:32. > :06:36.than 5g of sugar per 100ml. It's expected to raise

:06:37. > :06:43.?520million a year. The Government says that money

:06:44. > :06:56.will be spent on sport in school. Supporters of the sugar tax

:06:57. > :07:01.on sugary drinks say it is already encouraging manufacturers

:07:02. > :07:04.to reformulate their products, and targets a key source of sugar,

:07:05. > :07:06.especially among teenagers. High levels of sugar can contribute

:07:07. > :07:09.to excess weight gain, type two diabetes, particularly

:07:10. > :07:12.if you have too much through sugary drinks,

:07:13. > :07:16.and tooth decay as well. Currently we are consuming

:07:17. > :07:19.two to three times more British Sugar, which runs the Newark

:07:20. > :07:29.factory, sees it very differently, The single statistic which I think

:07:30. > :07:33.is most revealing about this is since 2001 consumption per head

:07:34. > :07:35.of sugar has dropped by 15% and since then

:07:36. > :07:41.obesity has spiralled. So there clearly is not a simple

:07:42. > :07:44.link between sugar and obesity. We clearly have a role

:07:45. > :07:52.and I would not suggest anybody We think sugar should be part

:07:53. > :07:56.of a healthy, balanced diet. The levy has some high-profile

:07:57. > :07:59.backers, like the TV The sugar tax was originally

:08:00. > :08:05.announced last year by the then-Chancellor George

:08:06. > :08:07.Osborne. A year is a very long time

:08:08. > :08:12.in politics and more details are now Here's the date to look

:08:13. > :08:19.out for - March 8th. The Government's spring

:08:20. > :08:21.budget which should have It's still due to come into force

:08:22. > :08:28.in April of next year. Conservative Government

:08:29. > :08:38.will ditch it. The King Fund says it has

:08:39. > :08:41.reservations about some of the plans to reform health services, including

:08:42. > :08:45.those in the East Midlands. It's latest report says the changes

:08:46. > :08:48.will provide more services in the community but it warns

:08:49. > :08:50.cutting hospital beds David Pearson who's behind

:08:51. > :08:59.the vision for health and social care across Nottinghamshire insists

:09:00. > :09:02.it is possible to reduce around 200 The Nottingham University Hospital

:09:03. > :09:08.so there at any one time 200 people who could be at home or in another

:09:09. > :09:11.place if there were the right What we need to do is to build those

:09:12. > :09:17.services in the community to be sure everybody has that trust

:09:18. > :09:26.and confidence in the plans. A vigil by school support staff

:09:27. > :09:34.outside Derby's council house At midday, after 24 hours,

:09:35. > :09:37.protesters blew out candles as the vigil opposing wage

:09:38. > :09:42.cuts came to a close. The union Unison says talks

:09:43. > :09:45.with the city council have again failed to reach an agreement,

:09:46. > :09:47.and therefore from next Monday, they're planning another five

:09:48. > :09:51.days of strike action. Tenants at a caravan park

:09:52. > :09:54.in Derbyshire say they've been left Last week letters were sent

:09:55. > :09:59.to residents at Haytop Country Park, telling them to remove

:10:00. > :10:02.their homes and possessions But today we've been told they'll

:10:03. > :10:07.be allowed to go back, after urgent repairs

:10:08. > :10:13.are carried out. What used to be a relaxing

:10:14. > :10:22.holiday home, but the bed, sofa and television have been

:10:23. > :10:25.removed after a letter was sent I had a phone call on Monday

:10:26. > :10:30.the 13th, last week, out of the blue, total shock,

:10:31. > :10:34.saying we had to be off site and take all our belongings,

:10:35. > :10:38.and the gate was going to be locked Pat is one of about 50

:10:39. > :10:48.people who use this site Dave and Iris, both now

:10:49. > :10:57.in their 80s, have been coming here for 25 years,

:10:58. > :11:00.spending thousands of pounds. But they say it is the emotional

:11:01. > :11:03.cost which is the hardest to bear. I know there are worse things

:11:04. > :11:06.to lose but when it takes the part of your life off t the age we have

:11:07. > :11:10.got, we could still come here and enjoy it,

:11:11. > :11:13.like we have always done. If we have to move we will probably

:11:14. > :11:16.try and find somewhere else but I do not think

:11:17. > :11:19.that is going to be very This is the letter the residents

:11:20. > :11:27.received from the owners, and it clearly says they are required

:11:28. > :11:30.to remove their holiday home and possessions from the park

:11:31. > :11:33.with immediate effect. This afternoon we had a different

:11:34. > :11:38.statement from owners which said they will not be closing the park

:11:39. > :11:41.permanently and they need to carry out urgent repairs,

:11:42. > :11:44.and once those are carried out it I mean, why couldn't

:11:45. > :11:48.they contact, why was there Why couldn't they just

:11:49. > :11:53.tell us all this? Why have they let us go

:11:54. > :11:58.through all of this? And them old people having to suffer

:11:59. > :12:01.all this for nothing. Pat and other residents now

:12:02. > :12:02.want more clarification on what the repairs will

:12:03. > :12:09.mean for them. Still to come this evening -

:12:10. > :12:12.extreme exercise. Why a man with Parkinsons

:12:13. > :12:18.disease is planning to row Robin Buttery will be constantly

:12:19. > :12:21.monitored during the challenge to help researchers find new way

:12:22. > :12:24.of helping others with There are concerns that plans

:12:25. > :12:38.for almost 300 new homes to the HS2 route.

:12:39. > :12:43.scrapped due to changes The new high speed rail route

:12:44. > :12:46.announced in November will go through two housing developments

:12:47. > :12:48.planned for Kegworth. Tonight a public meeting is taking

:12:49. > :12:52.place in the village for people to express their views,

:12:53. > :13:11.and our reporter Navtej Johal This village is no stranger to big

:13:12. > :13:14.transport projects, the more -- the M1 and others have all taken place

:13:15. > :13:18.nearby residents thought they had been spared the worst of the

:13:19. > :13:23.disruption from HS2 which was originally going to go underneath

:13:24. > :13:26.the airport. In November the route was redesigned and the new

:13:27. > :13:31.high-speed rail line will now go around the airport through the edge

:13:32. > :13:35.of Kegworth which means there is no uncertainty over whether to new

:13:36. > :13:39.housing developments which could result in almost 300 new houses

:13:40. > :13:44.being built here will go ahead and it may also affect the creation of

:13:45. > :13:47.some new local sports facilities. The parish council wouldn't believe

:13:48. > :13:57.the overall impact of HS2 in the village could be harmful. -- the

:13:58. > :14:02.parish council leader believes. HS2 will go over the viaduct and

:14:03. > :14:07.that will be the entrance to Kegworth. The railway viaduct with

:14:08. > :14:13.nine trains an hour in each direction. Quite a shame, really.

:14:14. > :14:16.We have heard a range of views on this issue today and the meeting

:14:17. > :14:20.tonight well be the last chance for people in the village to express

:14:21. > :14:24.their views on the issue to the parish council. The consultation on

:14:25. > :14:26.the new route ends on the 9th of March and we will have more on this

:14:27. > :14:30.story later tonight at 10:30pm. The Home Affairs Select Committee

:14:31. > :14:33.has been hearing from Nottinghamshire Police

:14:34. > :14:35.and campaigners about their work tackling sexist street harassment

:14:36. > :14:41.in the county. Last year, Nottinghamshire became

:14:42. > :14:44.the first force in the UK to include Today MPs heard how it's working -

:14:45. > :14:48.with a view to forming Mel Jeffs from Nottingham Women's

:14:49. > :14:54.Centre said it was about protecting women, and not about criminalising

:14:55. > :14:57.men. Women are not going to use this kind

:14:58. > :15:01.of policy for some kind of malicious They ring when they have a real

:15:02. > :15:06.concern, when they feel by reporting that it might help the perpetrator

:15:07. > :15:09.to be stopped before they do something else,

:15:10. > :15:11.when they want some kind of action. We have no experience

:15:12. > :15:15.of woman ringing up In terms of police resources

:15:16. > :15:20.what it is doing is focusing the police on things that need

:15:21. > :15:23.to be dealt with. Investigations are underway

:15:24. > :15:25.after flytippers dumped two lorry loads of rubbish at the side

:15:26. > :15:28.of a road in Leicestershire. The rubbish has been left just off

:15:29. > :15:31.the A47 near Hinckley and according to the local council,

:15:32. > :15:33.it's commercial waste. It was reported on Saturday morning

:15:34. > :15:36.and officers estimate it will cost "Living was just

:15:37. > :15:48.like hell on earth". That's how Leicester Tigers

:15:49. > :15:52.scrum-half Jono Kitto has described his personal experience

:15:53. > :15:55.of depression as a teenager. Now 24, the New Zealander

:15:56. > :15:57.is supporting The Rugby Players' Association 'Lift

:15:58. > :16:00.the Weight' campaign. It's aiming to tackle the stigma

:16:01. > :16:02.surrounding mental health issues. Jono Kitto has been talking

:16:03. > :16:22.to our reporter Victoria Hicks. It is acceptable to say you're

:16:23. > :16:26.struggling and finding it hard. I could go through it with other

:16:27. > :16:32.people and they could support me. To be isolated and on your own is very

:16:33. > :16:37.hard. Jono Kitto supporting the rugby players' Association campaign

:16:38. > :16:43.by sharing his experience of six months of depression when he was 19.

:16:44. > :16:50.I would wake up and think if this is my existence better not want a part

:16:51. > :16:55.of it and I cannot handle it. -- if this is my existence I do not want.

:16:56. > :16:59.I would describe it as hell on earth and did not have any hope there was

:17:00. > :17:05.anything more in the future from me and I thought if that is the case I

:17:06. > :17:11.want to die and I got to the point where I am training any rugby team

:17:12. > :17:14.and getting in the car and crying. Going to university and go to

:17:15. > :17:17.lectures and getting back in the car and crying and that night just

:17:18. > :17:23.feeling absolutely overwhelmed and do not want to be living any more.

:17:24. > :17:27.So I was like, something needs to be spoken about and people need to know

:17:28. > :17:33.so I can get to a place where this is not my reality any more. It to

:17:34. > :17:38.the weight off my shoulders and that I thought I was carrying it alone

:17:39. > :17:42.and there was the one around me who could be laid-back approach that was

:17:43. > :17:47.not the truth of the matter. The moment hope comes back is the moment

:17:48. > :17:53.you start to think, it is worth fighting and worth staying alive and

:17:54. > :17:56.worth going through all the what might first seem be scary process of

:17:57. > :18:01.opening up and being a vulnerable about what you are going through in

:18:02. > :18:06.order to actually give yourself a chance to see what can be changed

:18:07. > :18:11.and what things can get better. Because I have got to the place I am

:18:12. > :18:16.not that afraid of what people think now I am quite happy to share it

:18:17. > :18:25.because if it does help even one person it has done its job, in my

:18:26. > :18:26.opinion. That shows it affects anybody, no matter how tough and

:18:27. > :18:29.strong you are. Coming up, the big build up

:18:30. > :18:32.to Leicester City's champions league showdown in Seville -

:18:33. > :18:34.but we start tonight with Derby County take on Burton

:18:35. > :18:38.Albion this evening - and it marks the return of some very

:18:39. > :18:45.familiar faces to Pride Park. Nigel Clough brings his

:18:46. > :18:48.Burton Albion team here for the first time in their league

:18:49. > :18:52.history, and returns to the club But nothing but praise

:18:53. > :18:56.from the man who replaced him. I have respect and admiration

:18:57. > :18:59.for Nigel Clough, for what he has done and even the job he did here,

:19:00. > :19:07.we applauded it when we came in. He left us with a very good squad

:19:08. > :19:11.and he has got that at Burton. If they can beat Norwich

:19:12. > :19:13.then they come here was Plenty of familiar faces

:19:14. > :19:16.in the Burton team, too. Added spice for a Derby

:19:17. > :19:21.team still smarting Anybody can lose perspective

:19:22. > :19:27.of where we were and where we have been and where we are going

:19:28. > :19:30.and where we are now. We have just got to think,

:19:31. > :19:36.this is the Championship, this is football, you will lose

:19:37. > :19:38.games and sometimes You have just got to dust yourself

:19:39. > :19:45.down, get back onto the training 11th in the Championship,

:19:46. > :19:51.this is all about points. The Rams need results to stay

:19:52. > :19:59.in touch with the play-offs. Now to Leicester City,

:20:00. > :20:01.and the players have arrived, the fans are out in force, too,

:20:02. > :20:04.it's all set for a Champions League Faltering in the league,

:20:05. > :20:09.out of the FA Cup - could tomorrow night be the game

:20:10. > :20:27.to salvage their season? This is the home of Sevilla and fled

:20:28. > :20:30.the city wanted a game to be starting spot them they do not come

:20:31. > :20:37.much tougher than this. -- Leicester. Three European cups in

:20:38. > :20:40.April and that is why they are now in the Champions League and pushing

:20:41. > :20:47.a Barcelona at the top of the Spanish league and Leicester City

:20:48. > :20:49.are struggling to score at all in the Premier League this season but

:20:50. > :20:57.the Champions League has been special for them and on the pitch in

:20:58. > :21:00.this stadium, 42,000 capacity, in training there were scenes of

:21:01. > :21:08.genuine enthusiasm and passion and the desire to get back to something

:21:09. > :21:13.special. And the press conference as they spoke it is clearly see

:21:14. > :21:18.tomorrow as an opportunity. It is a bit strange but it is a game where

:21:19. > :21:21.we can forget about that for one night and if we make sure we put in

:21:22. > :21:30.a good performance we can hopefully use that to kick on and drag

:21:31. > :21:35.ourselves away from it. We play away from the Premier League we play like

:21:36. > :21:42.and for this reason I hope we can show our football. We know they are

:22:03. > :22:11.Thursday morning with a bit of pride and bring back a result with

:22:12. > :22:15.something to bring back to Leicester... This is a great team

:22:16. > :22:20.that plays in the stadium and there are the danger the lights might go

:22:21. > :22:21.out on this season altogether tomorrow night.

:22:22. > :22:28.Tim Peake more build-up tomorrow night. -- plenty more build-up.

:22:29. > :22:32.Nottingham Panthers are at home to the Elite League leaders tonight.

:22:51. > :22:53.just before his 44th birthday, will be monitored

:22:54. > :22:55.throughout the challenge. The information his body provides

:22:56. > :22:57.will enable researchers to study the impacts of extreme exercise

:22:58. > :23:00.on the condition and find Most people would not guess that

:23:01. > :23:19.Robin has a young onset It is a condition that shows

:23:20. > :23:22.itself in different ways, with symptoms including tremors

:23:23. > :23:26.and memory problems. I am very keen for people

:23:27. > :23:29.to understand what Parkinson is and I want them to see how

:23:56. > :24:03.into what extreme endurance exercise does in Parkinson's and how it

:24:04. > :24:08.influences the symptoms. It's a far cry his day job

:24:09. > :24:11.as a technical instructor at De Montfort University,

:24:12. > :24:13.a role he works in full-time, 18 months on from being diagnosed,

:24:14. > :24:16.just before his 44th birthday. I am under no illusions

:24:17. > :24:29.about the disease and know I am The main thing people have noticed

:24:34. > :24:38.and sometimes it will slow me down to almost a standstill,

:24:42. > :24:44.awareness of the condition and the charity Spotlight YOPD,

:24:46. > :24:48.is to raise awareness, collect this unique research data,

:24:49. > :24:50.to inspire other people with Parkinson's to take up

:24:51. > :24:53.the challenge, and fundraiser With up to 85 days at sea ahead,

:24:54. > :25:17.Robin is using his remaining time We wish him all the very best.

:25:18. > :25:22.Any research they can do for something like Parkinson's is

:25:23. > :25:27.brilliant. There is an awful lot going on outside. Indeed we have

:25:28. > :25:28.storm Doris on the way but more going on outside. Indeed we have

:25:29. > :25:35.storm Doris on the way but more on that later. But if you want the

:25:36. > :25:40.sunshine early on you had to get up very early. After sunrise our

:25:41. > :25:45.weather watchers were stumped if they wanted some brightness. Thank

:25:46. > :25:50.you to our weather watchers for those pictures. To watch tomorrow,

:25:51. > :25:56.more rain on the Wii and a a few more bright spots as well. What a

:25:57. > :26:02.contrast to earlier on with lots of cloud and a few bits of rain across

:26:03. > :26:06.the region as well. This is the pressure chart tomorrow, this cold

:26:07. > :26:12.front spanning across the East Midlands and that is starting to

:26:13. > :26:16.bring some rain in our direction. As we have a look at the details for

:26:17. > :26:20.tonight we can see the showers to the north, quite a lot of cloud but

:26:21. > :26:28.relatively mild for the time of year. Through the course of tomorrow

:26:29. > :26:32.we continue to see this band of rain working across the region. Slightly

:26:33. > :26:40.more patchy through the afternoon and in the North we may see some

:26:41. > :26:47.brightness as we go through the afternoon. Then we have this amber

:26:48. > :26:50.warning in place for wind for Thursday and all thanks to Storm

:26:51. > :26:57.Doris. At the moment this is what we think will be happening on Thursday.

:26:58. > :27:02.Around two or 3pm of those bars squeezed together and that is when

:27:03. > :27:07.we're likely to see the strongest winds. On the ground, first thing

:27:08. > :27:11.quite the lot of wet weather around on Thursday but later on that is

:27:12. > :27:17.when the winds start to pick up, gusts of up to 50-60 mph worked in

:27:18. > :27:22.places. The picture is developing so stay tuned to the forecast but if

:27:23. > :27:26.you have plans for Thursday's take extra care and make sure you stay
