:00:00. > :00:10.Tonight, how being being beaten and robbed may have

:00:11. > :00:18.inadvertently saved the life of a well-known pub vendor.

:00:19. > :00:28.After the attack, medical checks on Nottingham's Cockle man David

:00:29. > :00:32.Bartram revealed he had cancer. She gave me a full MOT, you know, and I

:00:33. > :00:43.found out I had something I didn't know I had got. And trying to

:00:44. > :00:48.prevent arson, there are around nine deliberate fires started everyday.

:00:49. > :00:57.Training for the Olympics with Champion Adam Peaty. And a stunning

:00:58. > :01:00.new stained-glass window. Stained-glass is a medieval process

:01:01. > :01:01.and we're making it the same way medieval craftsmen made it centuries

:01:02. > :01:14.ago. It's a great method. Very good evening and welcome

:01:15. > :01:16.to Friday's programme with Anne Davies and me,

:01:17. > :01:17.Dominic Heale. First tonight, the remarkable story

:01:18. > :01:20.of how one of the region's most colourful characters discovered

:01:21. > :01:22.he had a serious illness. David Bartram is one of the UK's few

:01:23. > :01:29.remaining cocklemen and he's been selling muscles,

:01:30. > :01:30.cockles and prawns Recently though, he was mugged,

:01:31. > :01:34.beaten up on his rounds. But the resulting medical checks

:01:35. > :01:36.following the attack revealed to David something he didn't know -

:01:37. > :01:39.that he had cancer. Our Health Correspondent Rob Sissons

:01:40. > :01:41.has been finding out how being mugged has given him

:01:42. > :01:44.the chance to get the crucial I'm called the Cockle Man or the

:01:45. > :01:53.Fish Man by everybody in Nottingham! But recently, walking between pubs

:01:54. > :02:00.in Nottingham city centre, he says he was punched and pushed

:02:01. > :02:02.to the ground. If they had been in front

:02:03. > :02:05.of me, I could have done Rib injuries and

:02:06. > :02:09.they still hurt now. Even in pain, he has

:02:10. > :02:16.kept up the job. He says, in a strange

:02:17. > :02:18.way, the attackers have His medical check

:02:19. > :02:21.revealed bowel cancer. I didn't want it, I could have

:02:22. > :02:27.done without the pain, Now 70, David is determined to keep

:02:28. > :02:34.working, to take his mind not only off the disease but also continue

:02:35. > :02:45.a pub tradition. I've got a dog myself,

:02:46. > :02:47.and four walls. Nottingham people

:02:48. > :02:51.wanted me to do it. I do it for Collecting

:02:52. > :02:53.for Rainbows charity. David has not yet reported

:02:54. > :02:55.the attack to the police. He believes his cancer has been

:02:56. > :02:58.caught early but is awaiting He's struggling to make sense

:02:59. > :03:01.of why he was targeted. Because Nottingham people

:03:02. > :03:19.wouldn't do that to me. Rob has gone with him. Good evening

:03:20. > :03:26.to you. An extraordinary way to find out you have got cancer! Strange how

:03:27. > :03:32.things turn out, isn't it? Dave has got his first sale of the night,

:03:33. > :03:35.here in the city centre. And was just saying how strange it is that

:03:36. > :03:39.you would find out you had got cancer from this robbery in the

:03:40. > :03:44.street. Yes, it is. You think it may have saved your life? It has saved

:03:45. > :03:51.my life in one respect but I'm still hurting from the other. I think I

:03:52. > :03:54.went four weeks with bad ribs. You were telling me you are a tough

:03:55. > :04:00.character, you are pushing through. Yes. Yes, I am. I'm getting through

:04:01. > :04:05.it. I had to have some time off, that is the worst. You had no

:04:06. > :04:11.symptoms of bowel cancer, no abdominal pain? No pain at all. You

:04:12. > :04:16.don't remember getting a card through the post? A lot of people

:04:17. > :04:21.get these test kits. No, I never got one. I'm sure everyone wishes you a

:04:22. > :04:24.wig recovery. The landlord over here, Pete, is really glad to see

:04:25. > :04:30.David back at work. What do you reckon to what has gone on? It's

:04:31. > :04:37.awful. He's a gentleman, is Dave. To find out that... You're pleased to

:04:38. > :04:43.see him back at work. Very pleased. You've known him since the 70s?

:04:44. > :04:50.Three-year is, serving the same thing as he does now. He's a real

:04:51. > :04:56.character. Legend. Plenty of people agree with that and as we have seen,

:04:57. > :04:58.Dave is back at work, just beginning his pub crawl. He's got a lot of

:04:59. > :05:07.friends, hasn't he? Still to come this evening -

:05:08. > :05:09.fundraising fun. Geeta's at a call centre

:05:10. > :05:15.where the cash is rolling Yes, the lines are now open and we

:05:16. > :05:20.will be chatting to some of the volunteers who have given up their

:05:21. > :05:21.time tonight and we will have a look at what else has been going on

:05:22. > :05:28.across the region. Fire services across our region

:05:29. > :05:35.are reporting an average It adds up to hundreds

:05:36. > :05:38.of deliberate fires a year. And it means of course that

:05:39. > :05:45.firefighters aren't immediately available when other fires threaten

:05:46. > :05:47.life or property. Derbyshire Fire Service

:05:48. > :05:51.training in Alfreton today. But at any moment, these officers

:05:52. > :05:54.may have to rush to an emergency, It's frustrating that some

:05:55. > :05:58.fires aren't accidents Fire officers hope people

:05:59. > :06:03.will be on the lookout We stand ready to

:06:04. > :06:07.respond 24 hours a day. Clearly we can't be

:06:08. > :06:11.in two places at once. So whilst we are dealing

:06:12. > :06:16.with the deliberately ignited car or pile of rubbish or a disused

:06:17. > :06:19.building, then we're not immediately available

:06:20. > :06:21.for house fires and the like, Arson can be just

:06:22. > :06:25.pointless destruction. People also set fires

:06:26. > :06:30.to illegally claim on insurance. Since April last year,

:06:34. > :06:37.950 in Leicestershire. And in Nottinghamshire,

:06:38. > :06:39.close to 1500. That means there are around

:06:40. > :06:42.nine deliberate fires The authorities are also keen

:06:43. > :06:51.for people to spot situations that To prevent people having the means

:06:52. > :06:55.to set fires deliberately, what we ask people is to be quite

:12:54. > :12:57.window and Derek has created a modern design but the working method

:12:58. > :13:01.is anything but. Basically stained-glass is a medieval process

:13:02. > :13:05.and we're making it the same way medieval craftsmen made it centuries

:13:06. > :13:08.ago. It's a system that was devised in the 12th century and it has

:13:09. > :13:14.stayed the same since then. A lot of hand tools, knives. Each piece of

:13:15. > :13:21.glass is hand cut. The colour is in the glass itself and then the paint

:13:22. > :13:26.is put on to create texture and Bedale. If you want a face, a head,

:13:27. > :13:30.that would be painted onto the surface of the glass and then fired

:13:31. > :13:37.in the kiln. Here we are, work in progress. This is the bottom section

:13:38. > :13:40.of the central part. Those behind the church's restoration are

:13:41. > :13:49.delighted with the way the new window is shaping up. It is in

:13:50. > :13:55.memory of John Plumb, who left money for the refurbishment. We wanted to

:13:56. > :14:02.reflect the history of Melton, so we have got Jerusalem, reflecting our

:14:34. > :14:35.Still to come - putting the fun into fundraising.

:14:36. > :14:40.The annual Red Nose day tomfoolery is about to kick off here on BBC1

:14:41. > :14:42.but you've already been having a laugh, raising cash

:14:43. > :15:03.The fun ends now that that that I was looking for a pie in the face

:15:04. > :15:11.but instead uses a stab in the back! First, the best in the world.

:15:12. > :15:15.Olympic golden boy Adam Peaty says his aim is to become the first

:15:16. > :15:19.British swimmer to defend an Olympic title, the very first, and that is

:15:20. > :15:22.what his driving him towards the Tokyo Games.

:15:23. > :15:24.Peaty's also revealed to our Sports Editor Natalie Jackson

:15:25. > :15:26.that at 14 he wanted to quit swimming and he very

:15:27. > :15:29.COMMENTATOR: Here he is, Great Britain's Adam Peaty.

:15:30. > :15:32.It almost takes a miracle to win an Olympic gold.

:15:33. > :15:34.You've got more chance of winning the lottery.

:15:35. > :15:38.He needs this to join the most exclusive club.

:15:39. > :15:44.I just knew he was going to deliver something crazy.

:15:45. > :15:53.VOICEOVER: But as a boy, he was scared of water and very

:15:54. > :15:59.Peaty takes Olympic gold for Great Britain

:16:00. > :16:03.I found my love for the sport, eventually.

:16:04. > :16:05.Because that first year, I absolutely wanted to quit

:16:06. > :16:10.I said to my mum, I got into the car on Sunday

:16:11. > :16:13.night and I was like, mum, I don't want to do this any

:16:14. > :16:16.She was like, you know, just keep going, keep

:16:17. > :16:21.# I'm always pushing myself to the limit, making

:16:22. > :16:26.# You made me who I am from the words you said.

:16:27. > :16:36.VOICEOVER: So, his parents and long-serving coach Mel Marshall

:16:37. > :16:37.take considerable credit for the transformation

:16:38. > :16:39.from a 14 year old whose times weren't the best,

:16:40. > :16:44.As soon as I started to get the ball rolling with Mel

:16:45. > :16:47.and I started to swim faster, that's when it kind of popped

:16:48. > :16:54.VOICEOVER: Marshall's appointment as head coach at the city of Derby

:16:55. > :17:01.eight years ago was the start of their incredible journey.

:17:02. > :17:02.Now he is the reigning Commonwealth, European,

:17:03. > :17:05.World and Olympic champion, and she is the National League

:17:06. > :17:08.This is their new base as a new cycle begins

:17:09. > :17:19.No British person in swimming ever has defended an Olympic title.

:17:20. > :17:22.So that is my main motivation now and I think it's

:17:23. > :17:29.But then when you climb it again, you want to climb it better.

:17:30. > :17:33.And I think that's what we want to do, we want to climb it better.

:17:34. > :17:37.We had all the kit last time and we're going to go with no shoes

:17:38. > :17:41.At the end of the day, it's all about creating a legacy

:17:42. > :17:43.and how can we portray the best image possible for

:17:44. > :17:52.All we can do is work hard and keep the love there.

:17:53. > :17:58.Everest without shoes... Adam Peaty and Marshall both stars.

:17:59. > :18:01.Lets take a look at the weekend's sport coming up -

:18:02. > :18:04.starting with what will be an even more remarkable rugby derby

:18:05. > :18:05.match between Northampton and Leicester Tigers than usual.

:18:06. > :18:08.It'll be the last game in charge for Aaron Mauger.

:18:09. > :18:11.A very unusual farewell - Mauger was told he was being sacked

:18:12. > :18:12.as Tigers head coach earlier this week.

:18:13. > :18:15.But he chose to take charge of one last match.

:18:16. > :18:18.And Tigers are still very much in the Premiership play-off hunt.

:18:19. > :18:25.There's a lot of belief. And that belief has come from real committed

:18:26. > :18:30.action from everybody, players, staff, coaches, over the last eight

:18:31. > :18:33.or nine weeks. When you're at the bottom of the whole, you've got to

:18:34. > :18:36.dig, and the boys have dug themselves out and we're in a great

:18:37. > :18:38.space at the moment, so I believe the team are well set to press on

:18:39. > :18:42.over the coming weeks. In the weekend's football

:18:43. > :18:44.Mansfield Town start tomorrow three points off the play-offs,

:18:45. > :18:48.as they go to Morecambe. Notts County could do the Stags

:18:49. > :18:51.a favour with a win at Wycombe, who are among the teams fighting

:18:52. > :18:53.Mansfield for that spot. But both clubs - especially Notts -

:18:54. > :19:03.need to learn how carry their home We've got to start learning how to

:19:04. > :19:10.manage the game and manage teams away from home and learn how to win

:19:11. > :19:14.away from home. Or if you can't win, expect a point. So that is something

:19:15. > :19:15.we will be working on this week and hopefully trying to make sure it

:19:16. > :19:17.comes to fruition on Saturday. Nottingham Panthers finish

:19:18. > :19:23.their regular season this weekend. Tonight the National Ice Centre

:19:24. > :19:26.will be sold out and rocking And on Sunday they travel

:19:27. > :19:30.to Manchester Storm. Also watch out for the action

:19:31. > :19:32.in the British Gymnastics The Downie sisters and Sam

:19:33. > :19:40.Oldham among the stars And finally, what a day

:19:41. > :19:49.for Emma Wiggs - the Leicestershire Paralympic

:19:50. > :19:50.canoeing gold medallist at Buckingham Palace

:19:51. > :20:11.today receiving her MBE. From laughter Yoga... Never heard of

:20:12. > :20:15.that before... I've heard of custard throwing competitions, though!

:20:16. > :20:18.People across the region have been finding imaginative ways to raise

:20:19. > :20:21.money for Red Nose Day and have a laugh in the process.

:20:22. > :20:23.Last time, Comic Relief raised almost ?100 million

:20:24. > :20:26.nationally, and there are high hopes of topping even that amount.

:20:27. > :20:28.Well, Geeta Pendse is at a call centre in Nottingham

:20:29. > :20:32.where they will be taking in some of those all-important donations.

:20:33. > :20:42.Love the headgear! Yes, it is really a hive of activity here as you can

:20:43. > :20:46.probably see. Around 120 members of staff here at domestic and general

:20:47. > :20:49.and their friends and family and a few familiar faces are manning those

:20:50. > :20:53.phone lines. In a moment we will talk to a view of them but first,

:20:54. > :20:54.here is a look at a view of the things that have been happening

:25:21. > :25:23.continue. Anyway, with the forecast, here is Rebecca Wood.

:25:24. > :25:29.As we head through this weekend, a change is on the way.

:25:30. > :25:34.Through today, it has been very springlike.

:25:35. > :25:37.We had some cloud in the morning but steadily we started to see that

:25:38. > :25:39.thinning and breaking through the day and we got

:25:40. > :25:44.In fact it was very pleasant out there with temperatures getting up

:25:45. > :25:47.For this weekend, plenty of settled weather.

:25:48. > :25:49.High pressure is driving the weather in the main.

:25:50. > :25:52.It is going to settle things down and we will get some warm sunshine.

:25:53. > :25:55.But as we head through the overnight period, a touch of frost

:25:56. > :26:00.and that is going to come tonight particularly.

:26:01. > :26:02.Skies clearing, temperatures falling away and some

:26:03. > :26:04.mist and fog patches developing but some cloud blowing

:26:05. > :26:07.Temperatures ranging between two and three Celsius.

:26:08. > :26:10.In the countryside, it will in fact be a touch cooler than that.

:26:11. > :26:12.So we start tomorrow with some mist and fog.

:26:13. > :26:15.The sun will help to lift it and there will be some

:26:16. > :26:17.spells of sunshine to come throughout the day.

:26:18. > :26:19.Light winds as well, so without that nagging breeze,

:26:20. > :26:21.our temperatures should do a little better.

:26:22. > :26:25.We should see them pushing up to 13 Celsius further inland.

:26:26. > :26:35.On the coast, not quite as good, around 10 degrees.

:26:36. > :26:38.Through the end of the day, once again our skies

:26:39. > :26:40.will clear, very little cloud, and that is going to see our

:26:41. > :26:45.A warning to all those gardeners, a touch of frost once again possible

:26:46. > :26:49.But some mist and fog patches could also develop and the coast

:26:50. > :26:52.holding up a little better but lows of three to five Celsius.

:26:53. > :26:55.As we head through the remainder of the weekend, that high pressure

:26:56. > :26:57.still very much in charge, keeping us very settled.

:26:58. > :26:59.Mothering Sunday, a little more sunshine in the forecast

:27:00. > :27:02.but still a bit of cloud and temperatures back up to 13

:27:03. > :27:05.Celsius, but it does look like we're managing to stay settled

:27:06. > :27:14.Very nice. She can come again, can't she? Excellent forecast! It's all

:27:15. > :27:22.going on, Red Nose Day, Mothering Sunday and the clocks going forward.
