:00:12. > :00:17.Tonight, can the Foxes reign in Spain?

:00:18. > :00:25.Crunch time for Leicester as 5000 fans descend on Madrid. Leicester

:00:26. > :00:38.City and their fans are here. The only eat Billy Macri in Bush team

:00:39. > :00:41.left in the last eight. Plus we are at Leicester Cathedral ahead of the

:00:42. > :00:45.Queen's visit tomorrow. Find out what is going on inside later in the

:00:46. > :00:49.programme. And a family tradition. Meet the

:00:50. > :01:00.young police recruit following in his mother's footsteps.

:01:01. > :01:03.Good evening and welcome to Wednesday's programme

:01:04. > :01:05.with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:01:06. > :01:08.First tonight, 5,000 football fans have descended

:01:09. > :01:10.on Spain's capital city, Madrid, where tonight

:01:11. > :01:16.For the very first time, the club are playing in the quarter

:01:17. > :01:21.It's just another amazing chapter in the Leicester City story

:01:22. > :01:26.and Natalie Jackson is there to see it all unfold.

:01:27. > :01:30.Within the last hour there have been reports of skirmishes between police

:01:31. > :01:39.and fans. For much of the day it has been come

:01:40. > :01:43.here and very good-natured, but there have been some clashes in the

:01:44. > :01:47.main square in Madrid, and we have had Leicester City fans on plain to

:01:48. > :01:52.us that the policing here has been heavy-handed. I think we have got

:01:53. > :01:56.some pictures now of the main square which are just coming in. It has

:01:57. > :02:01.been cleared by police this afternoon, with a small minority of

:02:02. > :02:06.Leicester fans singing provocative songs and being boisterous. The

:02:07. > :02:10.police took the decision to clear the square and officers with riot

:02:11. > :02:19.shields went in. Some Leicester fans say they were indiscriminate with

:02:20. > :02:24.the use of banners. The news is just coming in to us about that. Have

:02:25. > :02:28.been security scares here as well in light of the explosion in Germany

:02:29. > :02:31.last night. But the hope is that it does not overshadow the game this

:02:32. > :02:37.evening. Who would have thought two years ago that Leicester, the proud

:02:38. > :02:40.English champions would be the only English club left in the

:02:41. > :02:48.quarterfinals of the Champions League? There will be over 55,000

:02:49. > :02:54.fans present, and when that famous Champions League theme team brings

:02:55. > :02:58.out in an hour's time, none of the fans will have experienced anything

:02:59. > :02:59.quite like this on a proud and memorable night for Leicester and

:03:00. > :03:02.the East Midlands. In the Spanish capital,

:03:03. > :03:05.a sea of blue and white, for Leicester's first quarter finals

:03:06. > :03:08.in the European cup You still have to pinch

:03:09. > :03:15.yourself sometimes, you have to remind yourself

:03:16. > :03:18.that we are actually champions. You hear all the TV pundits

:03:19. > :03:23.saying it will embarrass the country, but it's

:03:24. > :03:27.just amazing, isn't it? We want to win, we all

:03:28. > :03:29.believe we can win. A dream too for Craig Shakespeare,

:03:30. > :03:35.who has never been This is just his eighth

:03:36. > :03:41.game in charge. Walking through the stadium in terms

:03:42. > :03:43.of by the changing rooms, seeing all the cups,

:03:44. > :03:46.it's a lovely traditional ground, The Premier League is

:03:47. > :03:56.Leicester's only major trophy. Atletico Madrid have 24,

:03:57. > :03:58.and are the ten time And, while the Leicester fans

:03:59. > :04:03.cannot believe their luck here in the 34 degree heat,

:04:04. > :04:06.for the locals, football makes It's like religion

:04:07. > :04:18.here, a way of life. Real Madrid, Atletico de

:04:19. > :04:22.Madrid, and Rayo Vallecano Maybe it's because in

:04:23. > :04:26.Spain we have the better The fans have been mesmerised

:04:27. > :04:33.by magical Madrid, with its beautiful monuments

:04:34. > :04:35.and fountains, but will they be Atletico Madrid have been

:04:36. > :04:47.in the European Championship finals They will try and win the tie

:04:48. > :04:54.at home, but that will play The best football in the world

:04:55. > :04:58.is played in the Champions League. You are playing against the best

:04:59. > :05:01.players in the world who play When you put all of that

:05:02. > :05:05.together and in the middle of it you stick little

:05:06. > :05:08.old Leicester City, wow! So, Leicester, the world's

:05:09. > :05:09.greatest underdogs, play This is their time and they

:05:10. > :05:31.are going to enjoy it. Kick-off is in an hour's time, and

:05:32. > :05:36.we will have more from here later in the programme.

:05:37. > :05:41.Natalie, thank you. Plenty of sunshine in Madrid. Not so warm

:05:42. > :05:47.here. Yes, it is not that one here, but as

:05:48. > :05:50.we go toward Easter, apart from a view spits and spots of rain it is

:05:51. > :05:51.looking fairly settled. I will have the full forecast later in the

:05:52. > :05:56.programme. An elderly pedestrian's been killed

:05:57. > :05:59.during a police chase in Derbyshire. The 75-year-old man was struck

:06:00. > :06:02.by a car on Main Street in Hilton yesterday afternoon,

:06:03. > :06:04.but died at the scene. Police say a car was being pursued

:06:05. > :06:08.by officers at the time. A 24-year-old man's been arrested

:06:09. > :06:10.on suspicion of causing death The incident is now

:06:11. > :06:15.also being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints

:06:16. > :06:21.Commission. There's been a fall in the number

:06:22. > :06:24.of people out of work Between December and February this

:06:25. > :06:27.year, the number of people without a job dropped by 11,000

:06:28. > :06:30.compared to the previous three The unemployment rate

:06:31. > :06:35.fell by just under half Sports Direct now has a workers'

:06:36. > :06:45.representative on its board. The move comes after the Shirebrook

:06:46. > :06:48.company came in for heavy criticism from MPs over

:06:49. > :06:52.its working conditions. The firm's claiming it's the first

:06:53. > :06:55.in the country to elect a member But unions are warning

:06:56. > :06:59.the new appointee, a shop manager, will face a struggle to highlight

:07:00. > :07:01.the concerns of workers. Here's our political

:07:02. > :07:07.editor Tony Roe. In the Derbyshire HQ,

:07:08. > :07:10.news of his appointment was made 30-year-old Alex normally

:07:11. > :07:16.runs a store in Devon, and started out doing a Saturday job

:07:17. > :07:19.there 13 years ago. Now he will be on the board

:07:20. > :07:23.and have the ear of Mike Ashley. It's something that Mike has wanted

:07:24. > :07:26.to do for a long time, It has always been positive for me,

:07:27. > :07:35.I have been rewarded for what I do And what can you do

:07:36. > :07:42.over the next year? Well, I just hope to make some

:07:43. > :07:45.differences, but I don't know because it's my first day

:07:46. > :07:47.in the job. I will be taking all the opinions

:07:48. > :07:50.of the staff and bringing them Sports Direct was subjected

:07:51. > :07:54.to an expose about its working conditions, particularly

:07:55. > :07:56.at its distribution centre. A Parliamentary investigation led

:07:57. > :07:59.MPs to conclude it was run Money paid back, no six strikes

:08:00. > :08:07.and you're out of a job Now, a place for a worker

:08:08. > :08:11.representing 23,000 staff Do you think you will

:08:12. > :08:17.be listened to? Mike will certainly listen to him,

:08:18. > :08:24.and I know the board of directors will, because I personally know them

:08:25. > :08:27.and they are all excited Clearly Sports Direct wants

:08:28. > :08:30.to improve its public image and believes that having a worker

:08:31. > :08:33.on the board of directors will go some way to achieving that,

:08:34. > :08:37.but the unions have always dismissed What they want is union

:08:38. > :08:43.representation in the warehouse Unite the union says Sports Direct

:08:44. > :08:48.should be moving agency staff The company says talks

:08:49. > :08:53.about talks with unions The changing face of the modern

:08:54. > :09:01.High Street is revealed The financial firm PWC says we're

:09:02. > :09:08.moving away from fashion shops Its research shows that

:09:09. > :09:13.tobacconists, estate agents and food outlets grew faster than other

:09:14. > :09:16.sectors last year. However, fashion shops,

:09:17. > :09:19.recruitment agencies and banks More shops opened than closed

:09:20. > :09:25.in Loughborough and Belper But gloom for Derby,

:09:26. > :09:30.Nottingham and Market Harborough In fact, Derby was the hardest hit,

:09:31. > :09:35.losing a total of 13 Let's cross to Geeta Pendse who's

:09:36. > :09:56.there for us tonight. Good evening. Good evening. Yes, PWC

:09:57. > :10:00.analysed just under 4500 outlets in 34 town and city centres across the

:10:01. > :10:05.East Midlands, and what they found was the biggest change in 2016 was

:10:06. > :10:09.the situation on the high street. As I found out, there were some clear

:10:10. > :10:20.winners and losers. And obviously they come in three mg

:10:21. > :10:24.and six on grand... The fastest growing industry in the East

:10:25. > :10:28.Midlands. There has been a rise of tobacconists opening in the East

:10:29. > :10:32.Midlands, along with food outlets and estate agents. That's according

:10:33. > :10:35.to research by PWC. It is a different picture for fashion shops

:10:36. > :10:45.with department stores and women's clothing hardest-hit. In 2016, 363

:10:46. > :10:50.shops close across the East Midlands, the equivalent of almost

:10:51. > :10:53.one every day. That compares with 289 opening, which is a net

:10:54. > :11:00.reduction of 64 shops. While that picture may seem Leumi, the research

:11:01. > :11:02.actually suggests that the East Midlands economy is thriving, and

:11:03. > :11:06.that it is the fastest growing outside of London and the

:11:07. > :11:16.south-east. The research suggests that letter shops are replacing

:11:17. > :11:20.devoid of clothes shops. Consumers are moving online and wanting to

:11:21. > :11:23.shop on the Internet, but actually the East Midlands is doing better

:11:24. > :11:26.than the national picture and that reflects the strength of the East

:11:27. > :11:33.Midlands economy at this time. Plenty of coffee shops, places to

:11:34. > :11:36.eat, take aways. They are making it so easy, I bake, online? Cause you

:11:37. > :11:41.don't really need to leave your home. A lot of big stores have been

:11:42. > :11:47.replaced by fitness centres and gyms. There are more leisure

:11:48. > :11:52.activities rather than retail and shopping. Leicester continues to

:11:53. > :11:56.outperform the rest of our cities. Darby, however, has seen the highest

:11:57. > :12:01.numbers of shop closures. It does not give the whole picture. We have

:12:02. > :12:06.got overly strong independent sector in Derby. The Cathedral Quarter one

:12:07. > :12:10.the best British high street last year in the national awards. The

:12:11. > :12:15.shopping centre is doing incredibly well. The research shows a buoyant

:12:16. > :12:19.economy in the East Midlands, but there is no doubt the growth of

:12:20. > :12:22.online shopping and changing consumer trends is radically

:12:23. > :12:28.changing the way we use the high street.

:12:29. > :12:31.I right in saying that this research will be focused on bigger companies

:12:32. > :12:38.and did not include the independent ones? Yes, that's right. It only

:12:39. > :12:41.looked at multiple retailers, so shops that have more than five

:12:42. > :12:46.outlets, which rules out the independent sector. Some have said

:12:47. > :12:49.that does not give a true indication of the situation on the high street,

:12:50. > :12:54.but the one thing that everyone seems to be agreeing on is that this

:12:55. > :12:57.shift from the additional clothing fashion stores on the high street to

:12:58. > :13:00.the draw of leisure outlets like restaurants and cafes. We will leave

:13:01. > :13:03.it there, thank you. Lung experts in Nottingham have

:13:04. > :13:05.helped develop a phone app to help asthma sufferers

:13:06. > :13:07.manage their condition. More than 385,000 adults

:13:08. > :13:10.and children living The MyAsthma app allows people to

:13:11. > :13:15.record information about what seems A team from the Nottingham

:13:16. > :13:21.Respiratory Research Unit, based at the University

:13:22. > :13:23.of Nottingham, worked with a leading pharmaceutical

:13:24. > :13:26.company to create the app. Developing something that helps

:13:27. > :13:29.people understand their asthma triggers, improve their knowledge

:13:30. > :13:32.of their asthma, and allows them to provide information

:13:33. > :13:34.for their asthma nurse or their GP is a real step forward

:13:35. > :13:37.in trying to improve asthma Derbyshire's new Chief Constable

:13:38. > :13:46.is due to be formally The job's expected to go

:13:47. > :13:50.to Peter Goodman, who's currently He has a wealth of experience both

:13:51. > :13:55.regionally and nationally, where he's leading operations

:13:56. > :13:59.to tackle cyber crime. He's been recommended

:14:00. > :14:01.by Derbyshire's police and crime commissioner to take over

:14:02. > :14:03.from Mick Creedon, who's Final preparations are underway

:14:04. > :14:11.at Leicester Cathedral ahead of tomorrow's visit

:14:12. > :14:16.by Her Majesty the Queen. The Queen will be presenting Maundy

:14:17. > :14:19.coins in a service that dates back Each year she visits

:14:20. > :14:24.a different Cathedral or Abbey to demonstrate her interest

:14:25. > :14:26.and involvement with the people Amy Harris has been with the team

:14:27. > :14:43.at the Cathedral as they get Outside Leicester Cathedral, a hint

:14:44. > :14:49.of the impending royal visit as police patrol the grounds inside two

:14:50. > :14:54.there is a vigorous preparation as this place of worship is made well,

:14:55. > :14:59.fit for a queen. It has been steadily increasing on the workload.

:15:00. > :15:04.It has been fun, it's been a challenge, something we will meet.

:15:05. > :15:09.The flower team have been preparing since November. The Queen will be

:15:10. > :15:14.greeted by hundreds of lilies, hyacinths and a whole host of other

:15:15. > :15:17.local blooms. All our friends have given us wonderful greenery. We have

:15:18. > :15:22.the gardens of Leicestershire in here. And so really, it is all

:15:23. > :15:26.coming together, we can nearly see it. Tomorrow morning, a last spray

:15:27. > :15:31.of water, and fingers crossed it will be fine. And what a moment for

:15:32. > :15:36.Leicester florist Rosie Mason, creating these sweet smelling the

:15:37. > :15:41.case, or knows gays, for the Royal family on home turf for the first

:15:42. > :15:47.time. I hold the Royal warrant to Her Majesty the Queen as supplier of

:15:48. > :15:56.Nosegays, so wherever she goes on more deep, I go. It makes me very

:15:57. > :16:01.proud. The Queen will carry one of Rosie's nosegays as she hands out

:16:02. > :16:06.points to 182 pensioners for services to the church and

:16:07. > :16:13.community. A token of gratitude which dates back centuries and is an

:16:14. > :16:17.important annual event in the Queen's calendar. An event that

:16:18. > :16:22.never before has been held in Leicester, so old and young here are

:16:23. > :16:28.pretty excited. I am just amazed that I am actually going to be

:16:29. > :16:34.singing in front of the Queen. I just can't get my head around it

:16:35. > :16:38.really! While final rehearsals get underway at the finishing touches

:16:39. > :16:39.are applied. Leicester Cathedral, it seems, is more than ready for its

:16:40. > :16:52.royal visitor. A big day for Leicester tomorrow.

:16:53. > :16:56.And possibly, could we say it is even bigger for them tonight? Let's

:16:57. > :17:05.go back to Madrid and to Natalie. Hello. Good evening. The time is

:17:06. > :17:08.now. Leicester City's game in the quarterfinals of the Champions

:17:09. > :17:15.League is nearly upon us. Their supporters are arriving just now the

:17:16. > :17:19.other side of the stadium, it is a sea of blue and white. But, what is

:17:20. > :17:24.the significance of this game? I have spoken to a man who has been

:17:25. > :17:25.covering European football for a national football Billy Mac

:17:26. > :17:28.newspaper for 30 years. There's only two games that

:17:29. > :17:32.are bigger than this, the semifinal of the Champions League

:17:33. > :17:34.and the final of Leicester have done fantastic to get

:17:35. > :17:38.so far, let's hope it continues. You have been in

:17:39. > :17:40.Madrid since Friday. How did Leicester get past

:17:41. > :17:42.Atletico's rock-solid defence? It was difficult because you have

:17:43. > :17:44.got Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale flanking a good

:17:45. > :17:49.player and they struggled. I would think that Vardy will look

:17:50. > :18:03.to play in behind him. If the play diagonals

:18:04. > :18:05.in behind him, he will have I would imagine that's a good

:18:06. > :18:09.tactic for Leicester. Can they pull off

:18:10. > :18:12.another amazing result? Very quickly, the fans have never

:18:13. > :18:16.experienced anything like this, but tonight the atmosphere will be

:18:17. > :18:18.something else, won't it? This is a real good core of fans

:18:19. > :18:41.here, they know their football. Well, before this Champions League

:18:42. > :18:46.campaign, Leicester had only ever played in European competition for

:18:47. > :18:51.times, twice they have drawn with Atletico Madrid. So, this is perhaps

:18:52. > :19:00.a little large match, and these teams certainly do have history.

:19:01. > :19:04.Mark looks back. 1961, and for Leicester in the blue

:19:05. > :19:15.tracksuits, a rare FA Cup final at Wembley. Leicester lost to Spurs,

:19:16. > :19:20.but still won a place in Europe. Suddenly he sees as his chance,

:19:21. > :19:25.goal! Playing in Europe at them was a novelty. Few prepared for it.

:19:26. > :19:31.Normally, they did not have a big scouting system like they do now.

:19:32. > :19:38.The media wasn't into Europe. In Madrid, pre-match publicity meant a

:19:39. > :19:45.player was needed for a bull fight. He said you are going to have a top

:19:46. > :19:51.at a door holding a cape, and you hold it and people will come

:19:52. > :19:59.through. Dash-macro a bowl. He looked straight at me. And then

:20:00. > :20:04.there was the Spanish crowd. When anything was going wrong, they threw

:20:05. > :20:09.Russians from the seats also all came flying down. Dash-macro

:20:10. > :20:15.cushions. It was a great experience really. Leicester lost 4-1 on

:20:16. > :20:22.aggregate. It was 36 years before they were back in Europe and drawn

:20:23. > :20:27.again against Atletico Madrid. They were quite aggressive, quite

:20:28. > :20:32.intimidating from memory. I think they tended to gather in pockets and

:20:33. > :20:37.groups and firecrackers were going, it was a hell of an atmosphere, a

:20:38. > :20:41.great experience. In Marshall gave Leicester the lead in Madrid, but

:20:42. > :20:46.two late goals put them behind after the first leg. We gave themselves a

:20:47. > :20:51.chance, that's the great thing. We have given ourselves may be more

:20:52. > :21:00.than a chance. Back home, the second leg was spoiled by poor refereeing,

:21:01. > :21:05.and Leicester went out, again 4-1. 20 years on, Matt Elliott is back in

:21:06. > :21:09.Madrid, hoping for revenge. If they do get the win and get through to

:21:10. > :21:16.the semifinals, it would be nice for us old players to have that feeling

:21:17. > :21:19.of revenge, I suppose. And so to 2017. Thousands of fans have headed

:21:20. > :21:27.out, hoping in Madrid it is third time lucky.

:21:28. > :21:34.Well, this could be the last ever Champions League gained at the old.

:21:35. > :21:40.They move next season. This is a very special and poignant match for

:21:41. > :21:43.Atletico Madrid fans. Of course so too for Leicester, but we are

:21:44. > :21:46.hearing reports that away from here in the main square that has been a

:21:47. > :21:55.couple of dozen injured tonight. There are simmering tensions and

:21:56. > :21:59.police with batons have charged one corner of the square. If we have

:22:00. > :22:01.more details, we will bring it to you on our late bulletin. Natalie,

:22:02. > :22:03.thank you. He's the latest young recruit

:22:04. > :22:08.to Leicestershire Police and, not only is he following in his mum's

:22:09. > :22:12.footsteps, he's also Ben Hill started his training this

:22:13. > :22:28.week and Jo Healey went It is a boyhood dream, I have always

:22:29. > :22:32.wanted to be a police officer ever since I was a kid. And this week,

:22:33. > :22:36.Ben's boyhood dream is coming true. Not only is he starting out as a new

:22:37. > :22:44.recruit, you will have the same collar number as his mum. So, PC

:24:09. > :24:12.This is the ominous skies over Melton Mowbray earlier today, and we
