:00:00. > :00:00.It's almost 6:30pm, you're watching East Midlands Today.
:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight, a rehab charity's inundated with calls for help
:00:00. > :00:21.Experts say the drug is popular with some fitness enthusiasts can cause
:00:22. > :00:25.major health problems. Also tonight, donations flood in for a teenage
:00:26. > :00:31.driver who lost both of his legs following a crush. Plus, the firms
:00:32. > :00:36.reaping a windfall from our unexpected election. Fabulous
:00:37. > :00:41.business, we should shift at least 3000, the bank manager will be
:00:42. > :00:43.thrilled to bits. And an unlikely top of the crop as wine producers
:00:44. > :00:50.see a surge in growth. Good evening and welcome
:00:51. > :00:52.to Thursday's programme with Dominic Heale and me,
:00:53. > :00:55.Anne Davies. Our top story tonight,
:00:56. > :00:58.a charity which helps drug users in Leicester,
:00:59. > :01:00.says around ten people a week are asking them for help
:01:01. > :01:04.over their use of steroids. Rehab charity Turning Point says
:01:05. > :01:07.more people need to be aware But one gym trainer has told
:01:08. > :01:13.East Midlands Today that you need to take drugs if you're
:01:14. > :01:16.going to compete. Ramsay has been training hard
:01:17. > :01:23.for the past 30 years. In the 1980s, he competed
:01:24. > :01:26.in body-building competitions He says it helped improve his
:01:27. > :01:31.performance and he didn't worry I'd be exaggerating to say
:01:32. > :01:37.they are very dangerous. I wouldn't condone them, the use
:01:38. > :01:42.of them, unless you were competing You know, if you want
:01:43. > :01:48.to compete at a high level, Possession or importing with intent
:01:49. > :01:57.to supply is illegal and it One charity says it's seeing around
:01:58. > :02:03.ten people a week in Leicester and Leicestershire seeking help
:02:04. > :02:07.for their use of steroids. Since July last year,
:02:08. > :02:10.we've recorded 400 individuals that have come to our service
:02:11. > :02:13.using performance and That's probably the tip
:02:14. > :02:18.of the iceberg. It's fashionable, you
:02:19. > :02:21.know, taking steroids. Because people want to look good,
:02:22. > :02:24.want to look muscular. All the social media sites have
:02:25. > :02:29.got guys with sick abs. At this gym, the owner has also
:02:30. > :02:33.competed but he says he's I could have used them but I didn't
:02:34. > :02:40.find it necessary to do so I never experienced it and even now I'm
:02:41. > :02:44.saying to a lot of youngsters Gym users had mixed views
:02:45. > :02:48.about using steroid. Unless you're competing,
:02:49. > :02:50.unless you physically need to up your game because everyone
:02:51. > :02:53.next to you was taking If you train without steroids, Duke
:02:54. > :02:58.get more of a sense of achievement. But doing the gym for the last
:02:59. > :03:03.ten years, I've seen Getting the perfect physique
:03:04. > :03:08.is a must for many and while people may see using steroids as a quick
:03:09. > :03:12.fix, the advice here is simple. To get results, you want to eat
:03:13. > :03:20.well and work hard. Well, our health
:03:21. > :03:21.correspondent is Rob Sissons. What are the risks of
:03:22. > :03:33.taking anabolic steroids? If you talk to the medical experts,
:03:34. > :03:37.they say they are addictive in the quantities were talking about. We're
:03:38. > :03:41.talking about anabolic steroids are not the steroids given for a whole
:03:42. > :03:46.range of medical conditions. Given they can be addictive, they can have
:03:47. > :03:51.a whole range of impacts on human health. I've been talking to an
:03:52. > :03:54.endocrinologist at the Leicester Royal infirmary. He says we're
:03:55. > :04:01.talking about drug misuse. The physical problems are if you get a
:04:02. > :04:09.clot in the leg or hype blood-pressure or QR or disposed to
:04:10. > :04:11.impotency and infertility but it also has implications for
:04:12. > :04:15.hypertension, psychological implications and there are links
:04:16. > :04:16.with strokes and heart attacks and liver tumours.
:04:17. > :04:20.Are we talking about people of all ages taking anabolic steroids?
:04:21. > :04:26.That consultant in Leicester says he's seen two new cases a month and
:04:27. > :04:31.he is particularly concerned about young people, teenagers and young
:04:32. > :04:35.men, who may be addicted to steroids and may have a form of reverse
:04:36. > :04:40.anorexia. They may see their bodies as not strong enough, not muscular
:04:41. > :04:41.enough when, of course, other people see it completely differently. Thank
:04:42. > :04:42.you very much. More than half a million pounds has
:04:43. > :04:46.been raised for a teenage racing driver who's had both his legs
:04:47. > :04:49.partially amputated, 17-year-old Billy Monger
:04:50. > :04:52.is now recovering at An investigation into Sunday's
:04:53. > :04:57.accident has begun. The 17-year-old described
:04:58. > :05:04.by his team as a world-class talent, whose life has changed
:05:05. > :05:09.in an instant. Billy Monger's lower legs have been
:05:10. > :05:12.amputated following the horrific crash at Donington Park on Sunday,
:05:13. > :05:16.which was broadcast live on TV as part of a Formula 4 race,
:05:17. > :05:21.a juniors driving competition. His team says the teenager
:05:22. > :05:23.is staying resilient, He's actually had the lower
:05:24. > :05:29.leg just below his knee on his right leg removed,
:05:30. > :05:34.and then his left leg, But, as it stands at the moment,
:05:35. > :05:41.we're getting positive movements, The news of Billy's injuries has
:05:42. > :05:47.evoked a tremendous response from the public and some
:05:48. > :05:50.of the biggest names in racing. A fundraising page for Billy has
:05:51. > :05:53.received over half a million I think the level of generosity that
:05:54. > :06:02.has been shown has been immense. Originally, we set it up
:06:03. > :06:06.for the prosthetic, now, obviously, we've exceeded that amount,
:06:07. > :06:19.we can start looking at We've been told Billy is actually
:06:20. > :06:24.having more surgery this evening. Meanwhile, an investigation into the
:06:25. > :06:26.crush is now under way. Donington Park has said it will ensure every
:06:27. > :06:34.aspect of the accident is examined. Still to come, designs
:06:35. > :06:36.for a museum of making. We get a first glimpse
:06:37. > :06:49.of the ?16 million revamp In sport, we are with Adam Peaty,
:06:50. > :06:51.the Olympics running champion. After taking two goals this week at the
:06:52. > :07:00.British swimming Championships. Next, we're taking a look
:07:01. > :07:02.at the fastest growing sector And it's a product
:07:03. > :07:05.that may surprise you. A report from the Market Harborough
:07:06. > :07:09.based English wine producers reveals that the UK wine industry
:07:10. > :07:12.is enjoying astronomical growth. Sarah Teale is at a vineyard
:07:13. > :07:15.in Leicestershire. Sarah, just how fast
:07:16. > :07:31.is this industry growing? All it's incredible. A million fines
:07:32. > :07:35.like this will be planted over the UK. Acreage of vineyards has tripled
:07:36. > :07:41.over the last 15 years so why is wine production on the up? Earlier
:07:42. > :07:43.today, I went to a very well established vineyard to find out.
:07:44. > :07:45.Tony and Veronica have been making wine here
:07:46. > :07:50.In just 100 days, these budding vines will be producing
:07:51. > :08:00.grapes but the wine itself is a long time coming.
:08:01. > :08:03.Most of our wines, when we offer them for sale, it's about 18
:08:04. > :08:07.Tony says global warming is one factor which has encouraged more
:08:08. > :08:13.Because people now recognise the varieties of grapes
:08:14. > :08:18.on the label, they are quite happy to try English Chardonnay,
:08:19. > :08:24.English Pinot Noir, English sparkling wine because they know
:08:25. > :08:27.what they've had from other countries in the past,
:08:28. > :08:39.And, invariably, once they try English wine, they like it.
:08:40. > :08:45.Well, Tony and Veronica's daughter liked it so much she planted this
:08:46. > :08:50.vineyard along with her family. Thank you for joining us this
:08:51. > :08:54.evening. It is a long job, this. We planted the vineyard in 2012 and we
:08:55. > :09:00.won't get any product available until next year, 2018. It is in the
:09:01. > :09:06.blood but what made you want to go into it? We had two children, my
:09:07. > :09:10.husband and I, and we wanted the outdoor lifestyle that I had when I
:09:11. > :09:15.was growing up. We talked about global warming but the UK weather
:09:16. > :09:17.can't really help grape production, can it? There has been an increase
:09:18. > :09:22.in temperatures which is of value but we do have to suffer from frosts
:09:23. > :09:29.and watch the weather all year round. So it is a challenge. You
:09:30. > :09:34.have 8.5 acres here but where do you see this going in the future? We're
:09:35. > :09:38.hoping it is going to be a success. We are growing the champagne
:09:39. > :09:42.varieties of it like to extend that. We have another ten acres to plant
:09:43. > :09:47.one we have the money to do so, so let's sell the product and that will
:09:48. > :09:51.be great! The product won't be ready till 2018 but that's a good excuse
:09:52. > :09:54.to come back? I like the way your thinking.
:09:55. > :09:56.As the candidates hit the election trail they won't leave home
:09:57. > :09:59.without at least two things - rosettes in their party's colours
:10:00. > :10:01.and leaflets to stuff through letterboxes.
:10:02. > :10:04.Which means this is shaping up to be a very busy time for the businesses
:10:05. > :10:07.Not surprisingly, perhaps, the forthcoming election
:10:08. > :10:23.It is a political stitch up but a welcome one. That is fabulous
:10:24. > :10:26.business. We should shift at least 3000. Unexpected and the bank
:10:27. > :10:30.manager will be thrilled to bits. We have local election so there will be
:10:31. > :10:35.local ones and then we've got the big one, and that is literally from
:10:36. > :10:41.all over the country, could be anywhere. Something is colouring
:10:42. > :10:44.Tories judgment. There are three different blues. And the different
:10:45. > :10:51.Conservative parties are picking their colours. They've been making
:10:52. > :10:54.rosettes for 30 years. The family firm established an international
:10:55. > :10:59.reputation when it was selected to make the showjumping rosettes for
:11:00. > :11:03.the 2012 Olympics. So, who do they pin their colours to? It is the
:11:04. > :11:10.politician everybody knows. It was Rik Mayall. He did a stage show and
:11:11. > :11:20.he wanted the curtains opening and a red rosette and that was a good
:11:21. > :11:24.order that came in very useful. When those party leaflets land on your
:11:25. > :11:29.doormat, they could well I've been printed in Birstall. As soon as the
:11:30. > :11:32.general election was called, the printers got rolling. In the last
:11:33. > :11:38.election we did a quarter of a million. Between a quarter of a
:11:39. > :11:44.million and 300,000. This time, we expect it to be worse or better on
:11:45. > :11:48.your perspective. It is a tough time for printing companies so we welcome
:11:49. > :11:52.every bit of business we can get. We will do the work one way or another.
:11:53. > :11:57.Politics is a tough business but also for business. -- good for

:13:16. > :13:21.from members of the public who have been using workshops at the museum

:13:27. > :13:29.project in 2011, 2012, when the building closed,
:13:30. > :13:32.it has absolutely been a central core thread that has run
:13:33. > :13:35.through about participation and actually Derby citizens,
:13:36. > :13:38.Derby people, communities, local people have been actively part
:13:39. > :13:45.of how we make the Museum Of Making. The biggest change that people
:13:46. > :13:48.are going to see is out here. Absolutely, this is a very unloved
:13:49. > :13:52.space at the moment, as you can see. It actually was the space
:13:53. > :13:55.where the original flume used to run by the side of the mill,

:14:51. > :14:54.doesn't it? Time for sport and she's back
:14:55. > :14:57.from Madrid, via Leicester this week Yes, we've made big news
:14:58. > :15:02.there in swimming and snooker, and we start in the pool
:15:03. > :15:06.with Olympic Champion Adam Peaty. He narrowly missed out
:15:07. > :15:08.on breaking his own world record last night as he claimed gold
:15:09. > :15:11.in the 50 metres breaststroke at He'd already won the 100 metres
:15:12. > :15:18.title earlier in the week to qualify for the World Championships in July
:15:19. > :15:33.in Budapest. Great swim last night. Thank you.
:15:34. > :15:36.What a week for Adam Peaty at the British swimming Championships here
:15:37. > :15:44.in Sheffield. Today, fans queued out of the door to get his autograph
:15:45. > :15:50.after he took two Golds to qualify for the world championships in the
:15:51. > :15:55.summer and, not only that, but swam the second-fastest time ever in the
:15:56. > :15:59.world in the 50 metres breaststroke. Adam, your first big meat since the
:16:00. > :16:04.Olympics and couldn't have gone better. Obviously, it is a great
:16:05. > :16:10.week for me, two with Asian times, top world times, the second on the
:16:11. > :16:16.100, so it's looking good for Budapest. I love to race, I love
:16:17. > :16:21.getting a rubbish start and swimming! Thing is, you've shown
:16:22. > :16:25.people here at the British Championships there is no stopping
:16:26. > :16:29.you after the Olympic. I mean, we're talking about markers this time of
:16:30. > :16:35.year, you've got some Chinese guys putting times and markers, Italian
:16:36. > :16:41.guys, but when it comes down to me, post-Rio, I'm even more motivated. I
:16:42. > :16:45.wanted to put down my own marker, say to the rest of the world I'm
:16:46. > :16:50.still on top of my game, still fit and hopefully, come Budapest, I'll
:16:51. > :16:54.be even faster. Early in the week, Adam made headlines when he gave
:16:55. > :16:59.away his first British gold medal here at the championships to a
:17:00. > :17:03.ten-year-old boy. Mat-mac, after he took his second gold, he decided
:17:04. > :17:10.he'd got a surprise for someone else, too. I had to keep one for my
:17:11. > :17:15.grandmother. Does she know she is going to get one of your medals?
:17:16. > :17:18.Shill like that, she'd always loves showing her neighbours, getting them
:17:19. > :17:20.round and going through my medal cabinet. I'll pop round and give it
:17:21. > :17:22.to her. Now, Leicester City did
:17:23. > :17:24.it at 5,000 to one. Now a Leicester snooker player
:17:25. > :17:26.is looking to surprise Those were the odds for the oldest
:17:27. > :17:31.man at the World Snooker After 46-year-old Rory McLeod beat
:17:32. > :17:36.the joint favourite Judd Trump. It's the best result of his career
:17:37. > :17:42.and a remarkable comeback. He was 4-0 down and went
:17:43. > :17:45.on to beat the world number Being in the next round is
:17:46. > :17:53.like a gift that any There's how many snooker players
:17:54. > :17:59.that are not here that would love And, you know, I'm just
:18:00. > :18:04.enjoying the moment. Rory turned professional at 18
:18:05. > :18:07.but had a 10-year gap as a barber and pub landlord to help
:18:08. > :18:15.pay the bills. A father of four, he is now based
:18:16. > :18:16.at Wigston and won his first-ever He seems to be getting
:18:17. > :18:19.better with age. People look at my age and it's just
:18:20. > :18:22.a number and it's how you take care of yourself,
:18:23. > :18:29.how you look after yourself. I think I'm doing pretty
:18:30. > :18:31.good, or my misses is. The next round, he plays
:18:32. > :18:33.Scotland's Stephen Maguire. Onto football and Nottingham Forest
:18:34. > :18:41.have confirmed that on-loan striker Ross McCormack will not play
:18:42. > :18:45.for the club again this season. McCormack who joined on loan
:18:46. > :18:48.from Villa after a fallout with the manager Steve Bruce has
:18:49. > :18:50.made just seven He's had an operation to remove some
:18:51. > :18:56.cysts from his mouth and the club He's had some issues which I've
:18:57. > :19:02.been well documented. He's a fantastic talent,
:19:03. > :19:04.there's no doubt about his ability, But right now the most important
:19:05. > :19:09.thing is his health and welfare, and, as I say, we are conscious
:19:10. > :19:12.of the fact that he is a Villa player, he has a long-term deal
:19:13. > :19:16.with the club and we have close contact with Steve, seen Bruce,
:19:17. > :19:18.who has been first class So they will assess him and we will
:19:19. > :19:25.see how it goes from there. Staying with football and the ever
:19:26. > :19:27.growing women's game. The new Super League season gets
:19:28. > :19:30.under way this weekend, and amongst the Notts County team
:19:31. > :19:32.four players with their They've already been named
:19:33. > :19:36.in the England line-up and believe they could be coming home
:19:37. > :19:39.with silverware from the European England expects and these Lionesses
:19:40. > :19:50.are looking to deliver. Now we've got to look each other
:19:51. > :19:55.in the eye and make sure every day we are living and breathing this
:19:56. > :19:57.kind of Lioness profile we've put out there to go
:19:58. > :19:59.and win this tournament. The England squad heading
:20:00. > :20:01.to the European Championships The four Notts ladies who've made
:20:02. > :20:07.the cut, relief all round. As any player, as an international,
:20:08. > :20:12.as a young girl looking up to these internationals,
:20:13. > :20:14.this is where you want And now it's just starting to get
:20:15. > :20:19.that little bit more real. For now, the focus on Notts County
:20:20. > :20:22.and the new WSL Spring series No relegation, no prize-money,
:20:23. > :20:28.primarily designed with For players it is important
:20:29. > :20:39.to my kind of, go hard for games, you know, the winning mentality,
:20:40. > :20:42.the edge, the competitiveness. Uncertainty remains about the future

:20:45. > :20:46.a winding up order over But three years after the team
:20:47. > :20:51.was first created, there's I think we've kind of hopefully put
:20:52. > :20:56.ourselves on the map in women's football,
:20:57. > :20:58.and for these little girls, we are actually girls
:20:59. > :21:00.and women to look up to now, and that's probably something
:21:01. > :21:03.we never had as kids. So, to be one of those Lioness
:21:04. > :21:06.players and, hopefully, in the Euros we can finally say that
:21:07. > :21:09.we've won something for these girls, and it gives them something to look
:21:10. > :21:25.forward to for the rest The lady pies have their first game
:21:26. > :21:28.against Arsenal on Sunday. What a wonderful name!

:21:31. > :21:33.Now, in celebration of 75 years in Nottinghamshire,
:21:34. > :21:36.Age UK has joined forces with this year's East Midlands Student Fashion
:21:37. > :21:42.Awards to find two ladies in their 70s to model.
:21:43. > :21:48.And I can tell you, it wasn't an easy job!
:21:49. > :21:53.Strutting your stuff on the catwalk in front of a huge audience might
:21:54. > :21:56.faze many but not these four ladies who took up the challenge to compete
:21:57. > :22:00.for a chance to walk the walk in front of Gok Wan this June
:22:01. > :22:03.at the East Midlands student fashion awards.
:22:04. > :22:07.Just love to because I think as you get older, if you can carry
:22:08. > :22:14.off things and do things, and have confidence,
:22:15. > :22:22.I know on television Gok Wan often will dress shorter
:22:23. > :22:25.women and older women, so I just think it will be
:22:26. > :22:31.par for the course for him and for me, I hope!
:22:32. > :22:34.And, with a casting process under way, what do the model agency
:22:35. > :22:46.Done a great job today, really, really confident.
:22:47. > :22:49.They've got a whole lot offer, their whole life experience.
:22:50. > :22:52.On the day, they will come up with the goods, we're sure of that.
:22:53. > :22:59.Don't know how you're going to pick favourites
:23:00. > :23:05.They've really embraced the opportunity and just to see them
:23:06. > :23:08.genuinely nervous for the walk, it shows how much it means to them.
:23:09. > :23:10.What have you thought of of the audition process?
:23:11. > :23:20.Only two ladies will be going through to this year's awards
:23:21. > :23:22.to model the designs of the next generation.
:23:23. > :23:25.How much would you like to be in the show?
:23:26. > :23:35.Oh, well, if I get there, I won't believe it.
:23:36. > :23:42.Also lovely and also good. Have you selected the winners? Not
:23:43. > :23:46.yet we shall know next week. Fingers crossed, I wish everyone could go
:23:47. > :23:48.through, really. We always say that but it is true! Very lovely ladies,
:23:49. > :23:58.very lovely weather, we're hoping. It is a cloudy story through this
:23:59. > :24:02.evening and the next few days. Today, plenty of cloud across the
:24:03. > :24:07.East Midlands as you can see. That was thick enough to produce some
:24:08. > :24:11.rain. A fairly cloudy picture and you can see that here on our weather
:24:12. > :24:17.watcher photos sent in from Derbyshire. A very cloudy scene. As
:24:18. > :24:21.we move through this evening and overnight, it is staying cloudy, one
:24:22. > :24:25.or two showers to look out for particular this evening and then it
:24:26. > :24:30.will be largely dry at the cloud could be thick enough to produce
:24:31. > :24:36.some rain but it will act as a blanket so our temperatures are not
:24:37. > :24:40.too low. A mild start the day tomorrow. Tomorrow, again fairly
:24:41. > :24:43.cloudy with the cloud thick enough to produce some rain through the
:24:44. > :24:49.day, particularly through higher ground but there will be a few
:24:50. > :24:54.bright intervals, the odd sunny spell, a maximum of 15 with the
:24:55. > :24:57.north-westerly breeze. Into Saturday, we have a cold front to
:24:58. > :25:02.begin the day which will mean a fairly cloudy and damp start button
:25:03. > :25:07.to the afternoon seeing some bright intervals with just the chance of an
:25:08. > :25:11.odd shower and it will feel a little bit cooler by the weekend. Our
:25:12. > :25:16.temperatures dropping down by one or 2 degrees. And it is a cold night
:25:17. > :25:20.overnight into Sunday. We could see a touch of frost to start the day
:25:21. > :25:24.but it will be largely cloud and dry on Sunday with temperatures falling
:25:25. > :25:29.down by the time we get to Monday so a fairly cloudy story through the
:25:30. > :25:34.next few days. It will be mild tomorrow, especially if you catch
:25:35. > :25:38.any sunshine because in the sunshine, it will feel pleasant but
:25:39. > :25:43.turning slightly cooler through the weekend and into next week.
:25:44. > :25:47.Thank you. There's talk of a cold northerly outbreak next week.
:25:48. > :25:52.I was convinced it was going to be warm! Have you unpacked yet? I have
:25:53. > :25:56.an it was nice and warm in the swimming pool in Sheffield, I have
:25:57. > :25:58.to say. He is back with the late news.
:25:59. > :26:01.I am and I hope you can join us then.
