:00:18. > :00:21.Tonight: the public inquiry into child sex abuse

:00:22. > :00:23.opens its investigation into Nottinghamshire's care system.

:00:24. > :00:33.Welcome to Thursday's programme with Dominic Heale

:00:34. > :00:42.France Bisto is the Legion d'Honneur 99-year-old veteran Don Sutton. They

:00:43. > :00:49.gave me there highest award, which I think is fantastic. And eight ?1000

:00:50. > :00:52.reward is offered to find Bella and Blake. The search continues for a

:00:53. > :01:01.missing lime and her border collie companion.

:01:02. > :01:04.Welcome to Thursday's programme with Dominic Heale

:01:05. > :01:09.The public inquiry into child sex abuse has unveiled

:01:10. > :01:11.the scale of its investigation into Nottinghamshire's care system.

:01:12. > :01:15.Today, local survivors' groups joined more than 30 lawyers

:01:16. > :01:23.Among them, was a woman who's told this

:01:24. > :01:26.programme that she reported abuse in children's homes to people

:01:27. > :01:35.Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, was at today's hearing.

:01:36. > :01:37.What really happened in Nottinghamshire's children's homes

:01:38. > :01:42.The police had been investigating for a number

:01:43. > :01:45.of years, but today, a new chapter in the quest for truth,

:01:46. > :01:48.Today, a preliminary hearing is being

:01:49. > :01:52.We have heard it's going to look at the extent of

:01:53. > :01:55.institutional failings in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and whether

:01:56. > :01:57.councils failed to protect children in care from sexual abuse and

:01:58. > :02:07.The enquiry is chaired by Professor Alexis Jay, who wrote a

:02:08. > :02:10.damning report on the extent of child abuse in Rotherham.

:02:11. > :02:11.Today, campaigners from Nottingham were in

:02:12. > :02:19.We hoped to get a public enquiry, but we actually forced the enquiry

:02:20. > :02:21.to come to Nottingham, and you know

:02:22. > :02:27.Survivors are finally being heard and are going to be hard.

:02:28. > :02:29.And that's what they've always wanted, just

:02:30. > :02:34.And hopefully, past failings won't haunt us in the future.

:02:35. > :02:40.There too, a former Nottingham children's home resident,

:02:41. > :02:45.It just continued, despite the reporting it,

:02:46. > :02:52.Even as I reported it to be highest level.

:02:53. > :03:02.These days, Nottinghamshire's children's homes are a world away

:03:03. > :03:06.from the institutions of the past, but the public enquiry wants to make

:03:07. > :03:07.sure that all the lessons have been learned.

:03:08. > :03:09.Well, Jeremy Ball's just come from the hearing

:03:10. > :03:16.Eventually we're going to hear some heart-wrenching personal stories.

:03:17. > :03:20.Today it emerged that almost seventy complainants,

:03:21. > :03:22.as they're being described, have now been given what's known

:03:23. > :03:27.But first, the inquiry team's got to plough

:03:28. > :03:33.Tens of thousands of pages of things like police reports,

:03:34. > :03:38.We also heard that they're looking at 57 different children's homes,

:03:39. > :03:49.Clearly a moment many people have waited for.

:03:50. > :03:53.What kind of legal outcomes does the inquiry allow for?

:03:54. > :04:01.It's about learning lessons from the past,

:04:02. > :04:06.They want to know the scale of any abuse and

:04:07. > :04:11.If they made complaints, were they simply moved somewhere else?

:04:12. > :04:13.And was there a "culture" that stopped investigations?

:04:14. > :04:15.Today we heard this inquiry's going to be broadcast publically.

:04:16. > :04:20.Complainants can choose whether to be identified.

:04:21. > :04:23.And Alexis Jay said she'll consider a request to move the whole

:04:24. > :04:33.The very word is enough to start a row.

:04:34. > :04:35.And today, an energy company has served notice that it's

:04:36. > :04:37.about to begin seismic surveys in our region that could,

:04:38. > :04:39.potentially, lead to hydraulic fracturing, as it's properly known.

:04:40. > :04:42.And the survey will be across a big area.

:04:43. > :04:45.It covers very nearly 100 square miles,

:04:46. > :04:47.taking in large parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

:04:48. > :04:50.But some places have been excluded - notably part of Sherwood Forest

:04:51. > :04:52.and some other sensitive areas, where critics of the process

:04:53. > :04:57.Well, our reporter James Roberson is in one of the communities that's

:04:58. > :05:20.Yes, I'm actually in Edwin Stowe, the former mining village in

:05:21. > :05:24.Nottinghamshire. It's the area around the village, not here in the

:05:25. > :05:32.centre, that will be subject to the survey. As well also the role areas

:05:33. > :05:37.west of here. And the whole area north, through north Derbyshire,

:05:38. > :05:41.north Nottinghamshire and injures out your torture. Today in deed into

:05:42. > :05:46.South Yorkshire, the fracking company is holding a public meeting

:05:47. > :05:51.and it shows the area and its jollity, which has already yielded

:05:52. > :05:54.oil for decades. The company will use these machines to send sound

:05:55. > :06:00.waves to map the rock underground and the suspect or a low gas is

:06:01. > :06:03.present, they will seek planning permission to drill test boring.

:06:04. > :06:09.Become Penny says it's simply not known yet whether they'll actually

:06:10. > :06:14.find any oil or gas. We couldn't possibly say. At this point we are

:06:15. > :06:20.just testing. It is possible you might not do any fracking you're at

:06:21. > :06:23.all? Yes, we are very hopeful of the shale gas industry in this country.

:06:24. > :06:32.We will hope it would be a really strong price for the UK and there

:06:33. > :06:35.are clear benefits. In Edwin Stowe, the mere mention of a possible

:06:36. > :06:41.survey into possible fracking in the future is enough to alarm, the ball.

:06:42. > :06:48.It's a lot to be a bad thing, hasn't it? To be honest. It's not very good

:06:49. > :06:51.for the environment as much as I know. I'm not really up on it, but

:06:52. > :06:57.it can't be any good to be honest. Why are you worried? Because of all

:06:58. > :07:03.the damage it can do. I've heard such a lot from people around here

:07:04. > :07:08.that have been telling us all about it and it doesn't sound very good.

:07:09. > :07:12.I'm not too concerned about fracking, because I think the

:07:13. > :07:15.country needs the energy and providing it doesn't impact on the

:07:16. > :07:23.environment too much, I think it will be a good thing. We need all

:07:24. > :07:29.the energy we can get. You are an ex-miner? I am an ex-miner, but you

:07:30. > :07:34.need something to replace the call. The survey will begin in June, but

:07:35. > :07:38.it will be October or November before it is here and the areas

:07:39. > :07:41.around here. Any actual fracking if it happens could be years away.

:07:42. > :07:45.Thank you, James. Today's the day all the candidates

:07:46. > :07:48.who are standing in the general election had to put their money

:07:49. > :07:51.where their mouths are and pay Registration closed a couple

:07:52. > :07:55.of hours ago, so we now know which politicians are standing

:07:56. > :07:57.where in those key Our political editor Tony Roe has

:07:58. > :08:01.been looking at the key seats. Let's start with how

:08:02. > :08:03.the East Midlands political map This is 20 years ago, that landslide

:08:04. > :08:10.1997 general election, and as you can see the dominant

:08:11. > :08:13.colour is red. There's a blue blob in Derbyshire,

:08:14. > :08:15.that's West Derbyshire now mostly In '97, it was surrounded by a red

:08:16. > :08:21.sea extending over the border And in Nottinghamshire too,

:08:22. > :08:27.it's almost solidly red. Fast forward to the general election

:08:28. > :08:31.in 2015, and you can They have won and consolidated

:08:32. > :08:36.in marginal seats. Now there are Labour

:08:37. > :08:38.islands in a sea of blue. Normally after seven years

:08:39. > :08:41.of Conservative Prime Ministers, you would expect the Government

:08:42. > :08:46.of the day to be on the defensive. That would mean having

:08:47. > :08:48.a Labour hit list. Seats like Derby North

:08:49. > :08:51.where there is only a 41 majority. A seat which tends to

:08:52. > :08:53.go to the Government. And places like Amber Valley,

:08:54. > :08:55.Erewash, Broxtowe and over here in Sherwood would

:08:56. > :08:57.normally be targets. But the opinion polls consistently

:08:58. > :08:59.show these are not normal times. Instead, those red islands

:09:00. > :09:02.are having to hold back the tide. North East Derbyshire,

:09:03. > :09:04.with only an 1,800 majority, Labour keep holding on to Gedling

:09:05. > :09:20.against the odds, but will it this time be swept away in a wave

:09:21. > :09:23.of Conservative support? Then there's Mansfield

:09:24. > :09:25.where what happens to the Ukip vote from 2015 will help

:09:26. > :09:27.decide this seat. And look over here

:09:28. > :09:38.in Leicester West. That Red Leicester

:09:39. > :09:39.heartland for Labour. If it's a really bad

:09:40. > :09:41.night for Labour, Now 2015 Ukip played a big part

:09:42. > :10:02.in the general election, At the Green party would be standing

:10:03. > :10:09.against Labour, because labour is against fracking. That's another 300

:10:10. > :10:13.votes in Mansfield, where the Labour majority is only 5000.

:10:14. > :10:16.Now 2015 Ukip played a big part in the general election,

:10:17. > :10:18.I gather they're not standing in so many seats this time?

:10:19. > :10:25.Know, the reason I keep going on about Ukip and I'm probably boring

:10:26. > :10:35.you really about how it what happens Ukip boat is important, they pulled

:10:36. > :10:39.300,000 or more votes. 15% of people in the East Midlands voted Ukip, so

:10:40. > :10:44.what happens to those worlds is very important. They have decided to not

:10:45. > :10:47.stand in seats where there is a pro-EU you leave candidate standing.

:10:48. > :10:51.If you look around the East Midlands, I would like to claim

:10:52. > :10:56.credit for this, but is from our local radio station, they are not

:10:57. > :10:59.sent in places like Amber Valley, South Derbyshire, North West

:11:00. > :11:03.Leicestershire and Bassetlaw, because they are the candidates

:11:04. > :11:08.wanting to leave the EU. What happens to that vote for the

:11:09. > :11:11.candidates who are standing is still going to be fascinating, especially

:11:12. > :11:16.in the thread isn't much of a majority for the sitting candidate.

:11:17. > :11:20.More tactical stuff, thank you very much indeed.

:11:21. > :11:22.A school in Leicester re-opened today after the death

:11:23. > :11:24.of an 11-year-old pupil at a theme park.

:11:25. > :11:26.Evha Jannath fell from the Splash Canyon

:11:27. > :11:30.She was on a school trip with the Jameah Girls Academy.

:11:31. > :11:32.Pupils are being given extra support to help them come

:11:33. > :11:38.The theme park, in Staffordshire, will be closed again tomorrow

:11:39. > :11:42.An inquest has opened into the death of a Derby born woman

:11:43. > :11:44.who died from crush injuries in France.

:11:45. > :11:46.Stephanie Turtle was found underneath a car.

:11:47. > :11:48.She had moved to live in a village, north of Toulouse.

:11:49. > :11:51.Derbyshire Police say her husband has been charged with her murder.

:11:52. > :11:53.The hearing at Derby Coroner's Court has been adjourned

:11:54. > :12:01.Next tonight a GP surgery in Leicestershire is the first

:12:02. > :12:03.in the East Midlands to offer in-house kidney dialysis.

:12:04. > :12:06.Carl Bicknelll used to face a round trip of two hours or more

:12:07. > :12:09.Now it's being provided much closer to home.

:12:10. > :12:12.The hope now is that more surgeries will follow suit -

:12:13. > :12:25.as our health correspondent Rob Sissons reports.

:12:26. > :12:32.The beauty of this surgery is it's just a ten minute Drive from Carl's

:12:33. > :12:37.home. He used to have to make a two hour round trip three times a week

:12:38. > :12:41.for his four a la dialysis sessions in Loughborough. Is a huge

:12:42. > :12:46.difference in travel, time. Having to go to Loughborough was such a big

:12:47. > :12:52.inconvenience. APPLAUSE

:12:53. > :12:56.Carl is a single parent and six-year-old Kerry may did the

:12:57. > :13:02.honours today opening the new dialysis centre. In means you will

:13:03. > :13:05.see her dad more. When I first met Carl, history was very heart-warming

:13:06. > :13:10.and the way that we normally deliver dialysis for patients in hospital

:13:11. > :13:14.didn't fit of life at all. Most patients still have dialysis in

:13:15. > :13:17.hospital. This is Michael at Kingsmill. Around two dozen patients

:13:18. > :13:19.in the East Midlands have dialysis this way. The big machine does the

:13:20. > :13:43.work of a small kidney, removing toxins from the East Midlands, more

:13:44. > :13:46.may follow is it. I don't think every practice could offer this, but

:13:47. > :13:48.there are plenty of practices now that work at a larger scale that

:13:49. > :13:53.could offer something along these lines. Carl is the first patient to

:13:54. > :13:56.use the facility which is at the Heath Lane surgery. They reckon up

:13:57. > :14:01.to 20 more people with kidney failure could also use it. The next

:14:02. > :14:05.one is to get one fitted at home. That would be even better, to be

:14:06. > :14:07.honest. But what they have done the Avenue has been brilliant, it really

:14:08. > :14:11.A Derby man who raised tens of thousands of pounds to pay

:14:12. > :14:14.for cancer treatment in Germany has lost his fight against

:14:15. > :14:17.Dominic Bergin was just 34 and had been diagnosed

:14:18. > :14:20.He was determined to try revolutionary treatment abroad,

:14:21. > :14:23.Friends and family raised over ?100,000

:14:24. > :14:24.through his Do It For Dom fundraising appeal.

:14:25. > :14:34.He passed away just two weeks after marrying his partner Robyn.

:14:35. > :14:36.Organisers of Leicester Pride say they're thrilled they've now got

:14:37. > :14:38.funding for this years event to go ahead.

:14:39. > :14:41.There were fears the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender festival

:14:42. > :14:43.would be cancelled due to a lack of money.

:14:44. > :14:45.But De Montfort University has put forward ?10,000 to make

:14:46. > :14:58.A 99-year-old war veteran has been presented with

:14:59. > :15:01.Don Sutton received the Legion d'Honneur to mark his part

:15:02. > :15:03.in the liberation of France in the Summer of 1944.

:15:04. > :15:06.Don was presented with the medal by the French Consul

:15:07. > :15:08.in the East Midlands at a presentation ceremony earlier today.

:15:09. > :15:11.I was there too and Don told me it was an incredibly

:15:12. > :15:25.He already has an impressive collection of medals to mark his

:15:26. > :15:28.Today, 99-year-old Don Sutton was awarded

:15:29. > :15:35.We would not be in this room if it was not for your courage,

:15:36. > :15:37.He received the highest distinction France can

:15:38. > :15:45.In a special ceremony at Gedling Civic Centre, the French

:15:46. > :15:47.consul to the East Midlands made the

:15:48. > :15:55.Don, what does this honour mean to you today?

:15:56. > :16:04.It means that France has appreciated what we did for them at the time.

:16:05. > :16:07.I was so proud to serve male country and helped

:16:08. > :16:08.to liberate France, which

:16:09. > :16:26.I think that's an understatement, Don, yes.

:16:27. > :16:31.Don, who celebrated his 99th birthday last

:16:32. > :16:34.Friday, volunteered to have entered the Army in 1937.

:16:35. > :16:37.He served in the North Somerset Yeomanry and is

:16:38. > :16:40.probably one of the last few who fought on horseback in World War II.

:16:41. > :16:42.Don fought back tears as the speakers described

:16:43. > :16:44.how he served across Europe and Africa.

:16:45. > :16:55.And how he and his unit were part of the D-Day landings.

:16:56. > :16:58.We would not be here if it was not for the sacrifice of him and

:16:59. > :17:03.The Legion d'Honneur, in a summary, is a thank you.

:17:04. > :17:07.It's an expression of gratitude of the French people and

:17:08. > :17:09.all our generation for what Don has done.

:17:10. > :17:16.It's been a very emotional day for you today.

:17:17. > :17:23.It was a moving ceremony with a simple sentiment. You are a living

:17:24. > :17:31.witness to the history you wrote on our soil that we will not forget.

:17:32. > :17:35.Thank you. It has been a very emotional day for you today.

:17:36. > :17:41.Not the sort of story we usually cover.

:17:42. > :17:44.And as a 99-year-old, not a young chicken any more!

:17:45. > :17:50.Not the sort of story we usually cover.

:17:51. > :17:52.But this is different, because this sheepdog has disappeared

:17:53. > :18:06.with her constant companion - an orphaned lamb called Bella.

:18:07. > :18:17.Do you have anything that can trump that? I might do, the crickets.

:18:18. > :18:21.On the way, one of the most successful sports teams we have

:18:22. > :18:25.But let's round up the news first starting with Leicester City And

:18:26. > :18:28.the Foxes are facing a bit of an injury crisis -

:18:29. > :18:31.midfielder Danny Drinkwater will be out for the last three games

:18:32. > :18:33.of the season, and defender Wes Morgan is also struggling

:18:34. > :18:46.and will miss their game against Manchester City at the weekend.

:18:47. > :18:48.And a new contract for Nottingham Forest Captain Chris Cohen.

:18:49. > :18:51.He's fought his way back from injury, scored one of the goals

:18:52. > :18:54.that kept Forest in the Championship and is now staying for another year.

:18:55. > :18:57.Now one of the East Midlands most successful sports teams head

:18:58. > :19:00.to London's famous o2 Arena this weekend but here's the thing -

:19:01. > :19:02.you might not have even heard of them!

:19:03. > :19:04.They're the Nottingham Wildcats and are the best women's

:19:05. > :19:07.Charlie Slater caught up with them before Sunday's big game.

:19:08. > :19:15.# And you can hit 'em low, hit 'em low.#

:19:16. > :19:18.With the league title already sewn up and a second

:19:19. > :19:20.straight final at the O2 arena ahead of them,

:19:21. > :19:29.Nottingham Wildcats are having a ball.

:19:30. > :19:32.When you go there for the first time, you're so in awe of

:19:33. > :19:35.everything that's going on around you that you almost forget to enjoy

:19:36. > :19:38.So this time, I'm really excited just to go there, to take

:19:39. > :19:40.everything in, just to enjoy the moment.

:19:41. > :19:42.So this is where the Wildcats call home, but there's

:19:43. > :19:46.going to be a big difference between playing in front of a couple of

:19:47. > :19:49.hundred here and a few thousand at the O2 Arena on Sunday.

:19:50. > :19:51.We have been to this situation for the past few

:19:52. > :19:55.This is our third time being there and we haven't been

:19:56. > :19:58.So, you know, we are really motivated to make sure that

:19:59. > :20:03.How are the nerves going into the game on Sunday?

:20:04. > :20:05.I mean, they're a fine right now, but

:20:06. > :20:24.I think I will take up my rightful place on the bleachers.

:20:25. > :20:26.You should have rolled your sleeves up.

:20:27. > :20:28.So back to the stands for me, but back to

:20:29. > :20:46.the O2 Arena for Britain's best women's basketball team.

:20:47. > :20:49.And more Basketball tomorrow, because Leicester's Riders

:20:50. > :20:52.are the best men's team in the country and they'll be

:20:53. > :20:54.at the 02 in their play-off final on Sunday too.

:20:55. > :20:57.We'll be at home with the coach, who's given them

:20:58. > :21:00.In Cricket, Notts Outlaws are playing Durham in

:21:01. > :21:04.But, trust me, forget about the score - what you really

:21:05. > :21:13.But look where it went. as you like six from Alex Hales.

:21:14. > :21:15.Also clean as you like, straight through the window

:21:16. > :21:17.of the BBC Radio Nottingham commentary box, where it's scooped

:21:18. > :21:29.And now, admit it, you want to hear the commentary too.
