:00:11. > :00:12.It's almost 6.30pm - you're watching East Midlands Today.
:00:13. > :00:17.Tonight - Labour's upbeat message to voters in rain-swept Derby.
:00:18. > :00:26.Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell says that despite the polls, Labour
:00:27. > :00:31.is growing. It is moving of its own accord and polls have been wrong in
:00:32. > :00:38.the past. Plus, from a hole in the ground, to this. How a
:00:39. > :00:43.Nottinghamshire stately home is being turned into a national rehab
:00:44. > :00:48.centre. And could this electric racing car is by the engineers of
:00:49. > :00:52.the future? If kids had the vote, who would they choose, as Prime
:00:53. > :01:03.Minister? I would want either Antic or Decker.
:01:04. > :01:06.Welcome to Wednesday's programme with Geeta Pendse
:01:07. > :01:12.First tonight - Derby will be a big beneficiary
:01:13. > :01:14.from Labour's manifesto, according to Labour's Shadow
:01:15. > :01:19.He arrived in the Labour target seat of Derby North this afternoon
:01:20. > :01:25.Mr McDonnell also told a crowd of supporters that a movement
:01:26. > :01:28.of support was building up despite the opinion polls which show
:01:29. > :01:31.the party trailing well behind the Conservatives.
:01:32. > :01:36.Our political editor Tony Roe was there.
:01:37. > :01:39.You could say this was the few for the many, the few Labour Party
:01:40. > :01:42.members braving the rain, waiting for the Shadow Chancellor,
:01:43. > :01:46.waiting for a bus which was an hour late.
:01:47. > :01:49.Yesterday's manifesto launch had nailed Labour's very different
:01:50. > :01:59.manifesto to the mast and supporters here are happy.
:02:00. > :02:03.for the people of Britain, where we could really establish
:02:04. > :02:06.the welfare state, even in the face of really serious austerity.
:02:07. > :02:10.Tuition fees, scrapping those is a massive bonus to this country.
:02:11. > :02:12.All our utility companies are foreign controlled.
:02:13. > :02:15.We have got to do something. I think Labour is the way forward.
:02:16. > :02:19.This is a Labour target seat, it has had a Tory majority of 41
:02:20. > :02:21.at the last election, but they believe here,
:02:22. > :02:23.this seat will be a test for Jeremy Corbyn's policies.
:02:24. > :02:30.I'm so pleased you've stuck around despite the elements themselves.
:02:31. > :02:33.Derby is of course a railway city and Labour promised to electrify
:02:34. > :02:35.the Midland Mainline and nationalise the railways.
:02:36. > :02:39.Places like Derby, not only will we increase the conductivity,
:02:40. > :02:45.but in addition to that, Bombardier will be one
:02:46. > :02:47.of the companies, obviously, that will be providing a lot
:02:48. > :02:50.of the railway stock that we will be needing in the new system,
:02:51. > :02:53.so for Derby, I think this manifesto, you could have almost
:02:54. > :02:57.And the claim also from the Shadow Chancellor about why
:02:58. > :03:03.The mismanagement of the economy now is affecting all people.
:03:04. > :03:05.I think that's why Theresa May called the general election.
:03:06. > :03:07.I think she called it now because she realised
:03:08. > :03:09.that the economy was on a downward spiral.
:03:10. > :03:14.We've got three weeks to turn that movement into electoral success.
:03:15. > :03:16.Labour don't believe the election will be a damp squib
:03:17. > :03:19.for the party's fortunes, things are picking up,
:03:20. > :03:22.they say, and polls have been wrong in the past.
:03:23. > :03:25.So the polls are wrong or will prove to be wrong.
:03:26. > :03:36.John McDonnell today told his damp supporters that they should be
:03:37. > :03:40.invigorated by the polls. He says, we are reporting the fact there is
:03:41. > :03:44.movement in the polls towards Labour. I think they take heart from
:03:45. > :03:48.what happened in America with Donald Trump and what happened in Canada
:03:49. > :03:52.with Justin Trudeau, where young people were not taken account of and
:03:53. > :03:56.the vote made a difference. I would say that any history of general
:03:57. > :04:01.election polling, there hasn't been a poll which has been more wrong
:04:02. > :04:04.than 6% and Labour need a lot more than 6% to overturn this deficit in
:04:05. > :04:06.the opinion polls at the moment. Thank you.
:04:07. > :04:09.Later in the programme we'll be reporting from Downing Street -
:04:10. > :04:13.Plus - we wanted rain. And we got it.
:04:14. > :04:16.Well, we certainly had lots of the wet stuff today.
:04:17. > :04:18.This was the picture at 11am and then pretty much the same
:04:19. > :04:21.picture at 2pm and then the same picture again at 5pm.
:04:22. > :04:24.Will we need our wellies again tomorrow?
:04:25. > :04:33.I will have the full forecast late in the programme.
:04:34. > :04:36.Police in Leicestershire are continuing to question two men
:04:37. > :04:39.on suspicion of murdering a 16-year-old girl.
:04:40. > :04:43.Megan Bannister was found dead after a car crash
:04:44. > :04:46.in Enderby on Sunday. Detectives say they believe
:04:47. > :04:49.her injuries weren't caused by the collision.
:04:50. > :04:51.They've been searching homes in the Braunstone area
:04:52. > :04:58.Two Leicester men - aged 27 and 28 - have been arrested.
:04:59. > :05:00.A man has died after being hit by a train in Nottinghamshire.
:05:01. > :05:03.British Transport Police were called to the Meadow Lane level crossing
:05:04. > :05:06.in Attenborough at around 11.20am this morning.
:05:07. > :05:10.It caused disruption to trains travelling
:05:11. > :05:13.between Nottingham and London, Leicester, Derby and Newark.
:05:14. > :05:16.Rail Accident Investigators have been called in.
:05:17. > :05:19.Next tonight, dozens of military veterans have been recruited to help
:05:20. > :05:22.build the new national rehabilitation centre
:05:23. > :05:27.Stanford Hall's now a vast construction site, that's eventually
:05:28. > :05:29.going to replace the outdated Headley Court in Surrey.
:05:30. > :05:40.Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports.
:05:41. > :05:42.This is how Stanford Hall is being transformed.
:05:43. > :05:44.Into a place that will rebuild shattered lives.
:05:45. > :05:48.From this vantage point, you can see how they are restoring the old roof,
:05:49. > :05:51.just one small part of a site that now employs 700
:05:52. > :05:57.You can see our heritage contractors relaying the reclaimed slate.
:05:58. > :05:59.Rich left the army with post-traumatic stress disorder.
:06:00. > :06:05.He used to build bases in Afghanistan.
:06:06. > :06:07.Now, he's recruiting other veterans to help build here at the defence
:06:08. > :06:13.Whilst it may take a little bit of time to bring
:06:14. > :06:16.a service leaver up to speed, service personnel have got
:06:17. > :06:18.discipline and they have those logistical, planning challenges
:06:19. > :06:21.that they faced on large operations. They bring leadership.
:06:22. > :06:24.They will be there on time and they are reliable.
:06:25. > :06:27.There are many former forces on this site,
:06:28. > :06:30.as a result of the draw of what this project is all about,
:06:31. > :06:34.It means so much because it will revolutionise rehab treatment
:06:35. > :06:37.for men and women in the forces who have been wounded.
:06:38. > :06:40.A rehab service that is currently based at the outdated
:06:41. > :06:49.The replacement they are building here at Stamford hall is due to be
:06:50. > :06:51.handed over to the Ministry of Defence in the
:06:52. > :06:54.What you can see behind me is going to be everything
:06:55. > :06:56.from complex trauma wards to hydrotherapy pools.
:06:57. > :06:58.And accommodation for up to 300 injured service personnel.
:06:59. > :07:02.And from the air, a bird's eye view that shows just how vast
:07:03. > :07:05.it is and how rapidly the grounds of Stamford hall have been
:07:06. > :07:15.This must be the biggest construction project in the East
:07:16. > :07:18.Midlands at the moment. This is one of the gymnasium is where most of
:07:19. > :07:27.the rehabilitation will take place. This is four size of the former
:07:28. > :07:31.site. We have got six tower cranes and two mobile cranes to actually
:07:32. > :07:35.feed the materials we need to build. There is still a lot more work to
:07:36. > :07:37.do, when it is finished, they hope this will be a lifeline for the next
:07:38. > :07:41.70 to 80 years. In just over three weeks' time,
:07:42. > :07:44.we'll find out who's won the race to Downing Street.
:07:45. > :07:47.That's three weeks for people to decide which are the most
:07:48. > :07:51.important issues in the election. Well, Ed Collard has been talking
:07:52. > :07:56.to voters who've something particular in common with the Prime
:07:57. > :07:59.Minister. So, what do they
:08:00. > :08:11.will have in common? Well, they all share one of the most
:08:12. > :08:14.famous addresses in the world - And as Theresa May goes
:08:15. > :08:20.through the rather arduous job application to hold onto her gaffe
:08:21. > :08:24.in SW1, it's the likes of Maureen and Morris
:08:25. > :08:27.in the Downing Street in South Normanton, and Jordan
:08:28. > :08:29.in his in Bulwell So what do they want the election
:08:30. > :08:36.on June the 8th to be about? I listen to what is in
:08:37. > :08:42.the news and in the media and wrote a few notes.
:08:43. > :08:46.Sometimes, your mind goes blank. And her vote is very
:08:47. > :08:49.much still up for grabs. The National Health Service,
:08:50. > :08:54.we want to review. So, I like what the Lib
:08:55. > :08:57.Dems have been saying. Hospital car park charges,
:08:58. > :09:02.which Labour have mentioned. Ukip, migration, which is another
:09:03. > :09:05.thing we talk about, isn't it? The Conservatives, mental health
:09:06. > :09:11.issues, yes, there are a lot In Bulwell, health is
:09:12. > :09:18.also on Jordan's mind. What is important in this
:09:19. > :09:21.general election would be privatisation of the NHS
:09:22. > :09:24.and other public services. All agree that money
:09:25. > :09:30.is too tight to mention. All agree that money is too
:09:31. > :09:32.tight not to mention. There is such a vast difference
:09:33. > :09:35.between the higher rates The national living wage does
:09:36. > :09:38.need to be increased. And where Theresa May can always
:09:39. > :09:44.find a policeman when she wants one, in South Normanton, Maureen's
:09:45. > :09:48.not so sure. Police, the cuts for the police,
:09:49. > :09:53.little things like, we've got a speed hump outside and it doesn't
:09:54. > :09:58.slow things down outside our gate. We have talked to dozens of other
:09:59. > :10:01.people on our Downing Streets, which also include one
:10:02. > :10:04.in Sutton-in-Ashfield. But in every case, one subject
:10:05. > :10:09.was surprisingly absent. Brexit is not important
:10:10. > :10:11.to me in this election. Brexit, I mean, personally,
:10:12. > :10:23.it isn't one of the biggest Ed Collard, BBC East Midlands Today,
:10:24. > :10:38.In the build-up to the general election we thought it would be
:10:39. > :10:41.interesting to see what young children think about it all.
:10:42. > :10:43.So, we visited Scalford primary school in Leicestershire
:10:44. > :10:47.You're in the camera. You are in the camera as well.
:10:48. > :12:21.I'm not. Yes, you are.
:12:22. > :12:27.And if you'd like to see that again, then catch it on our Facebook page.
:12:28. > :12:32.A Leicestershire road has re-opened after a building partially
:12:33. > :12:39.Emergency services were called to the two storey
:12:40. > :12:42.building at Long Street in Wigston yesterday evening.
:12:43. > :12:44.Specialist equipment was used overnight to demolish the property.
:12:45. > :12:48.The Fire Service says it's not yet sure what caused the collapse.
:12:49. > :12:51.A charity has put in a bid for ?6 million to transform
:12:52. > :12:55.a disused viaduct which connects Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
:12:56. > :12:58.The Bennerley Viaduct is a listed structure and one of only two
:12:59. > :13:02.Sustrans is applying for cash from The Heritage Lottery Fund
:13:03. > :13:05.to turn it into a cycling and walking route, in the hope
:13:06. > :13:13.Miles of canal have been adopted by groups
:13:14. > :13:16.of volunteers in Derbyshire. The Canal and River Trust has
:13:17. > :13:18.been asking for help to maintain the waterways.
:13:19. > :13:20.So far, groups in Long Eaton, Cromford, Findern and
:13:21. > :13:23.the Erewash Canal Preservation and Development Association have
:13:24. > :13:32.Now, believe it or not, the Royal Academy of Engineering
:13:33. > :13:35.reckons this country will need 1 million new engineers and
:13:36. > :13:41.So one group of Derbyshire schoolchildren have taken
:13:42. > :13:45.this challenge on board, and have built themselves
:13:46. > :13:47.an electric racing car. In fact, Class five at Aston
:13:48. > :13:52.on Trent Primary plan to race the car over the next two months.
:13:53. > :14:02.James Roberson's been to see them test driving the Aston Arrow.
:14:03. > :14:10.When you are ten, it is good to be a racing driver and that's what these
:14:11. > :14:13.youngsters in Derbyshire are being. They won a competition run by a
:14:14. > :14:17.national organisation called the advanced propulsion centre, to build
:14:18. > :14:21.a lightweight electric kit car, all designed to encourage the young
:14:22. > :14:26.engineers of the future. There is a statistic that by 2020, we will be
:14:27. > :14:29.short of a million engineers in the UK. We wanted a fun project to show
:14:30. > :14:33.students what they learn in the classroom can be translated into a
:14:34. > :14:43.fun project. The chassis and motor are standard. The body, though, is
:14:44. > :14:46.special to each school. These year five schoolchildren have been help
:14:47. > :14:52.from an engineering company by Matt -- from Melbourne. You should see
:14:53. > :14:57.the kids faces when we turn up. It is like, we're going to play with
:14:58. > :15:02.cars now. It has been a fantastic opportunity for them to build a car
:15:03. > :15:05.and race it. That was the whole reason for doing it, the principles
:15:06. > :15:12.behind the competition in the first place. The pupils are enthusiastic.
:15:13. > :15:16.We learned how to use a spanner to tighten them properly. So they would
:15:17. > :15:22.keep things in place. It's been really fun. I feel like I wanted to
:15:23. > :15:26.do some more and get into engineering. I have learned how to
:15:27. > :15:32.use gears to make more power. How to wire up a circuit correctly. What is
:15:33. > :15:41.it like to drive? It was really fun but scary at the same time! And it
:15:42. > :15:46.is scary! The aim is to join other schools and all compete together.
:15:47. > :15:49.The Aston Arrow has had input from aeronautical engineers at
:15:50. > :15:54.Loughborough university. If it goes fast enough, it would almost be able
:15:55. > :15:58.to fly around the course. After practice at school, it is next
:15:59. > :16:00.practice at Donington park, race in June, Stafford will hope to win at
:16:01. > :16:11.the big one, Rockingham, in July. That looks great fun. I'm handy with
:16:12. > :16:14.a spanner? I can assemble furniture
:16:15. > :16:17.occasionally. That's more than most of us can!
:16:18. > :16:18.The sport's coming up - along with, hopefully,
:16:19. > :16:20.a drier and brighter weather forecast.
:16:21. > :16:24.And they may say slow and steady wins the race, but sadly, not for
:16:25. > :16:40.Thwarted in his million to one chance of love.
:16:41. > :16:44.Time now for the sport. Here is Matthew.
:16:45. > :16:46.First we start with Nottingham Forest and we understand the meeting
:16:47. > :16:48.between Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis and the Football
:16:49. > :16:52.League has taken place - and the Greek take-over
:16:53. > :16:58.The club's manager Mark Warburton says he expects the new owners to be
:16:59. > :17:00.aggressively ambitious and is looking forward
:17:01. > :17:06.Manager Mark Warburton's faced a turbulent eight
:17:07. > :17:13.He says Nottingham Forest now need strong foundations and thinks
:17:14. > :17:15.the new potential Greek owner, Evangelos Marinakis,
:17:16. > :17:23.They are football people, proven football people.
:17:24. > :17:26.And they have done a magnificent job at the club.
:17:27. > :17:32.And they've really developed an outstanding club,
:17:33. > :17:35.so I'm sure the aspirations for the club will be
:17:36. > :17:37.equally as positive, equally as aggressive.
:17:38. > :17:41.The deal by the Greek shipping magnate is nearly complete.
:17:42. > :17:44.A meeting with the English Football League Executive to see if he passes
:17:45. > :17:48.the Owners and Directors Test has taken place.
:17:49. > :17:53.Marinakis is facing accusations of match fixing back home.
:17:54. > :17:56.He denies the allegations and is waiting to find out
:17:57. > :18:04.Of course, it is great seeing a quick fix but there is no quick
:18:05. > :18:07.fix by going to spend X amount of money at the club
:18:08. > :18:13.What we have to do is make sure the club is abiding
:18:14. > :18:16.by the regulations, is on firm ground.
:18:17. > :18:18.Warburton wants five or six players in the summer
:18:19. > :18:24.Keeping Forest up this season giving him sleepless nights at times.
:18:25. > :18:27.But the former City banker says the pressures
:18:28. > :18:33.I took the old Brentford players in to see the trading floor
:18:34. > :18:37.and they realised those guys get in at 6am and they are still there
:18:38. > :18:39.at 7pm and they are taking phone calls through the night
:18:40. > :18:44.It is all about teamwork, communication, desire, hunger,
:18:45. > :18:47.commitment, so it's not just football, far from it.
:18:48. > :18:50.It is 14 years now since he left the world of banking without any
:18:51. > :18:56.After success with Brentford and Rangers, his unconventional
:18:57. > :19:00.route into the game is now driving him on here.
:19:01. > :19:03.Basically, I thought, either do it now, or I'm
:19:04. > :19:06.never going to do it, as corny as that may sound.
:19:07. > :19:09.So it was that and it was taking the plunge,
:19:10. > :19:13.taking a significant pay cut, much to the wife's disgust!
:19:14. > :19:16.And I worked hard and I had some money put aside
:19:17. > :19:19.and you eat into that and just try to develop your football career.
:19:20. > :19:21.I'm very fortunate how it all turned out.
:19:22. > :19:24.Very few English bosses manage in the Premier League,
:19:25. > :19:28.but that's his ambition and he believes under
:19:29. > :19:30.the new ownership, he can do it with Forest.
:19:31. > :19:33.Do you feel excited now about the future for yourself
:19:34. > :19:38.It's never about me personally, but to answer your question, yes.
:19:39. > :19:40.24 clubs report back in June and will be
:19:41. > :19:43.saying, this is our year. That's the nature of every league.
:19:44. > :19:49.What we have to do is make sure it is Forest's turn.
:19:50. > :19:51.Lovely interview with Mark Warburton.
:19:52. > :19:53.Leicester City's manager Craig Shakespeare says he's been
:19:54. > :19:56.looking at possible summer transfer targets - even though there's
:19:57. > :19:59.no guarantee he'll be in charge of the club.
:20:00. > :20:01.Leicester face Tottenham in their penultimate game
:20:02. > :20:06.Shakespeare's future still hasn't been decided.
:20:07. > :20:09.But he revealed today he's making plans for the squad for next season.
:20:10. > :20:12.And he says it won't be long before he has talks with the owners
:20:13. > :20:19.We've got two games left now. It will come to a conclusion.
:20:20. > :20:23.I think the club realise, in terms of
:20:24. > :20:27.forward planning, it's important that everybody knows, and so my
:20:28. > :20:32.answer is, you won't have to wait long.
:20:33. > :20:35.And Leicester City's owners, King Power International,
:20:36. > :20:38.are buying another football club. They're in agreement with OH
:20:39. > :20:42.Leuven, who are a second tier club in Belgium.
:20:43. > :20:44.In cricket, Nottinghamshire will play at Somerset in the quarter
:20:45. > :20:50.Nottinghamshire's game at Northants was rained off last night.
:20:51. > :20:52.But they still qualified for the next stage.
:20:53. > :20:55.However, Leicestershire and Derbyshire are out.
