:00:39. > :00:40.The Alzheimer's Society reckons that the number of people living
:00:41. > :00:45.with dementia in the east midlands is around 60,000.
:00:46. > :00:58.Therea, from Arnold in Nottinghamshire, is one of them.
:00:59. > :01:06.It was two days before last Christmas that reason was diagnosed
:01:07. > :01:10.with early onset Alzheimer's disease. She is 54.
:01:11. > :01:12.And I noticed there was something wrong.
:01:13. > :01:15.It wasn't a case of I thought there was something wrong, I knew
:01:16. > :01:20.And not being able to do what she used to be able
:01:21. > :01:23.Teresa said it took months to get diagnosed.
:01:24. > :01:26.I thought I was too young to be in that sort of
:01:27. > :01:36.Health watchers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire says it's
:01:37. > :01:39.concerned too many patients are having to work longer than the Tiger
:01:40. > :01:42.time of six weeks from a GP referral to diagnosis by specialist.
:01:43. > :01:45.The point is when they seek that help
:01:46. > :01:51.Nothing will be the same thereafter and for some, it
:01:52. > :01:55.is devastating, but it is only then that they can make the plans that
:01:56. > :02:01.The NHS says a review of waiting times will get underway
:02:02. > :02:03.next month, but stresses record numbers of patients are being
:02:04. > :02:13.diagnosed with dementia and it is a big priority.
:02:14. > :02:16.Well, a study at the University of Leicester has found a potential
:02:17. > :02:18.drug treatment to restore memory loss in mice.
:02:19. > :02:21.It's not for use in humans yet, but could be, within ten years.
:02:22. > :02:24.Professor Andrew Tobin who led the project at Leicester,
:02:25. > :02:26.and is now based in Glasgow, says it's an extremely
:02:27. > :02:33.At the moment, there are no drugs available that slow the progression
:02:34. > :02:34.of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
:02:35. > :02:37.And this is the first time where we have been able to use
:02:38. > :02:40.a drug of this type to actually slow the progression of
:02:41. > :02:46.And this could offer some hope for Alzheimer's
:02:47. > :02:48.patients, but at this stage, the study has
:02:49. > :02:50.only been carried out on
:02:51. > :02:54.So, we start with looking at mice and then we
:02:55. > :02:57.have worked out the properties of the drugs that are necessary to slow
:02:58. > :03:02.the progression of neurodegenerative disease and now
:03:03. > :03:08.is to develop this drug for use in humans.
:03:09. > :03:12.And what kind of time frame would you be looking at?
:03:13. > :03:16.Well, now, we have gone quite a long way and so we're looking at a five
:03:17. > :03:19.to ten year period now to develop this product into something that
:03:20. > :03:23.And just to sum up, how significant is this really?
:03:24. > :03:26.As I said, there are 850,000 people suffering from dementia in the UK,
:03:27. > :03:29.the majority of those are suffering from Alzheimer's disease and so if
:03:30. > :03:32.we can take this prototype drug and develop it, it will make a huge
:03:33. > :03:35.impact from those people suffering from a disease which will just keep
:03:36. > :03:37.on increasing in its prevalence in society.

:03:50. > :03:51.of a 20-year-old Leicestershire student who died after
:03:52. > :03:56.Ed Farmer, from Tilton on Hill, died in the Royal Victoria
:03:57. > :03:59.Police say he arrived at the hospital in a life-threatening
:04:00. > :04:01.condition after drinking an excessive amount.
:04:02. > :04:04.The University says it's saddened by the news and once the Coroner
:04:05. > :04:15.establishes the facts, it will take any appropriate action.
:04:16. > :04:18.A court's heard how a young Nottingham man died from a single
:04:19. > :04:20.stab wound to his chest, after his car was surrounded by
:04:21. > :04:25.Four men, originally charged with murder,
:04:26. > :04:26.have instead been jailed today for manslaughter.
:04:27. > :04:29.It's because phone footage has revealed the actual murderer
:04:30. > :04:40.James Roberson reports from Nottingham Crown Court.
:04:41. > :04:43.Over the last few weeks, the court here has heard how increasing
:04:44. > :04:46.animosity grew between two groups of young men here in Nottingham.
:04:47. > :04:59.It culminated in the death of 21-year-old.
:05:00. > :05:01.The court heard how around 8:30pm on June 1st this
:05:02. > :05:05.year, his car was surrounded by three other car is on his own street
:05:06. > :05:08.His windows were smashed and he received a stab wound
:05:09. > :05:11.to the lung and heart, from which he collapsed and died.
:05:12. > :05:13.Four men aged between 18 and 24 have pleaded
:05:14. > :05:16.guilty to manslaughter, because it has now been revealed the actual
:05:17. > :05:19.All four were originally charged with murder,
:05:20. > :05:21.but it was revealed in court today that phone footage that
:05:22. > :05:23.originally was thought to show the four
:05:24. > :05:24.defendants as the colour was
:05:25. > :05:27.It showed that the defendant did not wield the
:05:28. > :05:29.knife, but another man, who has now disappeared.
:05:30. > :05:31.When we reviewed our own evidence, we find that the
:05:32. > :05:34.detail became clearer when we've used it on Apple software and Apple
:05:35. > :05:38.Then we were able to exactly see what had gone off.
:05:39. > :05:40.We have already made steps to make sure
:05:41. > :05:43.that officers are aware that when things are transferred from one
:05:44. > :05:44.format to another, everything must be viewed

:07:22. > :07:22.own and I didn't know what
:07:23. > :07:27.I wanted to hold her, keep her warm, but I knew that I could to
:07:28. > :07:30.So I just stayed there waiting for help to come.
:07:31. > :07:32.And so Amaya's fight for survival began.
:07:33. > :07:34.She spent most of her life at Nottingham's
:07:35. > :07:36.Children's Hospital at the Queens medical Centre, battling everything
:07:37. > :07:40.from lung disease to sepsis and still relies on oxygen.
:07:41. > :07:42.Babies born that early have many complications with
:07:43. > :07:45.their bowels, with their lungs and they need a lot of support
:07:46. > :07:49.And it's fantastic that now she has reached a time when
:07:50. > :07:52.all of the team looking after her decided she is ready for home.
:07:53. > :07:57.Her mum and dad say she wouldn't be alive
:07:58. > :07:59.today had it not been for the
:08:00. > :08:02.treatment she received at the QMC and that is why they have raised
:08:03. > :08:10.over ?11,000 for the neonatal unit where her journey began.
:08:11. > :08:13.They spent 19 weeks battling to save her.
:08:14. > :08:15.She has had many, many downs and also many ups
:08:16. > :08:17.and there have been times when we thought
:08:18. > :08:20.then something would happen and she couldn't.
:08:21. > :08:23.Now, finally, Amaya is home just in time for Christmas.
:08:24. > :08:25.Her mum and dad say it's the perfect present.
:08:26. > :08:38.And judging by her face, Amaya's pretty pleased too.
:08:39. > :08:40.Leicester City Council is hoping to cover the city's Magazine Gateway
:08:41. > :08:46.of the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation that covered
