:00:13. > :00:15.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Anne Davies.

:00:16. > :00:19.First tonight, Sherwood Forest could become the latest battleground

:00:20. > :00:26.Documents obtained by Friends of the Earth show that a chemical

:00:27. > :00:28.company wants to carry out seismic surveys for shale gas,

:00:29. > :00:31.and those tests could be within two hundred metres of the Major Oak.

:00:32. > :00:35.Here's Quentin Rayner to tell us more.

:00:36. > :00:37.These plans are being revealed through a freedom of

:00:38. > :00:41.information request by Friends of the Earth.

:00:42. > :00:44.They show that the chemical company Ineos Shale appears

:00:45. > :00:48.with the Forestry Commission to carry out seismic surveys

:00:49. > :00:53.in Sherwood Forest and other licensed sites in the East Midlands.

:00:54. > :00:56.The survey would involved putting charges in the ground to establish

:00:57. > :00:59.if there is any gas in the rock underneath, which might be extracted

:01:00. > :01:06.These tests could take place within 200 metres of the Forest's

:01:07. > :01:11.most famous attraction, the 1000 Major Oak tree.

:01:12. > :01:13.Ineos Shale insists it is not fracking in Sherwood Forest and

:01:14. > :01:15.accuses Friends of the Earth of unnecessarily alarming

:01:16. > :01:18.information it has received from the

:01:19. > :01:21.One of its directors recently told us what is involved

:01:22. > :01:27.with the seismic surveys in licensed areas in the East Midlands,

:01:28. > :01:31.What we would do is undertake the survey

:01:32. > :01:37.work then marry the survey work with vertical cord wells,

:01:38. > :01:40.not fracked but simply samples of the geology, looking at

:01:41. > :01:44.the depths, the characteristics, the pressures, the content and then

:01:45. > :01:47.we would use that information to form our conversation with the

:01:48. > :01:48.communities, the regulator, with the planning

:01:49. > :01:50.authorities to take on to a

:01:51. > :02:00.Now, the country park is a site of special scientific interest

:02:01. > :02:02.as well as a special area of conservation.

:02:03. > :02:04.Friends of the Earth feel the seismic surveys alone

:02:05. > :02:11.could damage the ancient woodland and its wildlife.

:02:12. > :02:14.Local anti-fracking groups fear that if fracking takes place,

:02:15. > :02:20.it could lead the the decimation of the forrest,

:02:21. > :02:22.increase the number of earthquakes in the surrounding area,

:02:23. > :02:24.disrupt the water table and worsen traffic levels.

:02:25. > :02:26.They plan to make it a rallying point by generating an

:02:27. > :02:30.international campaign opposing the plans, starting this

:02:31. > :02:35.Police are appealing for information after more than 60 cars were damaged

:02:36. > :02:37.in the early hours of yesterday morning across Leicestershire.

:02:38. > :02:39.People reported slashed tyres and smashed windscreens

:02:40. > :02:55.Waltham on the Wolds is a relatively quiet village

:02:56. > :02:57.and that is one of the reasons why so

:02:58. > :03:00.many people have been so shocked by what has been described as the

:03:01. > :03:03.mindless destruction that took place here in the early hours of

:03:04. > :03:07.A woman I spoke to said she stepped out of her house and

:03:08. > :03:10.encountered ten cars damaged on this street alone.

:03:11. > :03:13.More than 60 cars had their windows or tyres slashed

:03:14. > :03:26.However, nothing appears to have been stolen.

:03:27. > :03:30.We spoke to a couple earlier who had only had their car for

:03:31. > :03:31.a week before its window was slashed.

:03:32. > :03:42.Do they wake up one morning and say, yes, I fancy smashing some

:03:43. > :03:53.My front tyre has just been replaced about one month ago.

:03:54. > :04:00.It's brand-new and already I'm going to have to replace

:04:01. > :04:03.that just because some people wanted to vandalise my car for no reason.

:04:04. > :04:06.The police had told us that no arrests have been made so far

:04:07. > :04:08.however a black car was found abandoned

:04:09. > :04:09.yesterday afternoon in

:04:10. > :04:14.They are asking anybody with any information

:04:15. > :04:15.about these incidents to

:04:16. > :04:22.come forward and contact them on 101.

:04:23. > :04:25.A film warning about the dangers of online grooming has been viewed

:04:45. > :04:51.Rescuers say a couple forced to spend a night in the Cairngorms

:04:52. > :04:56.Bob and Cathy Elmer from Leicestershire were caught out

:04:57. > :04:58.when a planned hillwalk took longer than expected.

:04:59. > :05:01.They sheltered with their dog in survival bags in whiteout

:05:02. > :05:03.conditions before being found by a mountain rescue team.

:05:04. > :05:21.This was the moment members of the Cairngorms rescue team came across

:05:22. > :05:26.the couple on a snow laden plateau. The pair had been hill walking in

:05:27. > :05:27.Scotland for 25 years but the admit despite their experience and

:05:28. > :05:31.equipment, they were unprepared for equipment, they were unprepared for

:05:32. > :05:35.the conditions they were to face when they ventured out on the first

:05:36. > :05:38.day of the year. We knew it was winter time. We probably did not

:05:39. > :05:46.quite judge how long it was going to take the journey. It became an issue

:05:47. > :05:50.when I got two thirds of the way down the Glen and Cathy was

:05:51. > :05:55.struggling to keep up with me. Then I knew it was going to take a lot

:05:56. > :05:59.With a dog in tour, they found With a dog in tour, they found

:06:00. > :06:04.themselves in deep snow in darkness. With the batteries in their head

:06:05. > :06:09.torches having given out. The snow was up to our waste. We decided we

:06:10. > :06:13.could not go on any further because we did not know where we were going

:06:14. > :06:18.and we could not see our hands in front of our faces, we decided to

:06:19. > :06:25.get our survival bags out and get down for the night in them. A night

:06:26. > :06:29.out in the Cairngorm plateau in those conditions isn't very

:06:30. > :06:33.attractive, it was the decision that suit their lives. Being prepared for

:06:34. > :06:39.when things might call wrong is key in the mountains. You can go up Ben

:06:40. > :06:44.Nevis on a summers day and you can be knee-high in snow. We have been

:06:45. > :06:48.there, we have done it. You have to go equipped. You have to have the

:06:49. > :06:53.right kit, even if the sun is shining on the ground.

:07:41. > :07:44.At Kings Mill they see up to 400 hip fracture cases from falls each year.

:07:45. > :07:46.Numbers are rising because of the ageing population.

:07:47. > :07:48.To prevent them, doctors recommend people check their

:07:49. > :07:51.homes for hazards, such as loose carpets and rugs, regular exercise,

:07:52. > :07:53.say eat well and get medical help early for problems

:07:54. > :08:01.They say it is also important to keep warm this winter.

:08:02. > :08:03.The impact of a hip fracture on people's

:08:04. > :08:06.It can lead to long-term consequences.

:08:43. > :08:44.I haven't walked too well these last two years.

:08:45. > :08:46.I'm pleased it was inside and not outside.

:08:47. > :08:48.Doctors now aim to operate as soon as possible

:09:09. > :09:10.finished and the total number, minus all the insects?

:09:11. > :09:28.We pool all our information on this global database so we can keep track

:09:29. > :09:32.of how populations are changing within zoos, the researchers can use
