:00:34. > :00:36.Well, here at Nottingham's accident and emergency unit they saw a record
:00:37. > :00:41.number of patients in the department in the space of one hour
:00:42. > :00:48.UNISON have been talking to their members in the department,
:00:49. > :00:50.who told them what things were like over Christmas
:00:51. > :00:56.I went down to the A department today with the branch secretary
:00:57. > :01:01.and we spoke to a number of nurses and health care assistants
:01:02. > :01:05.and we asked how did they find working over the Christmas
:01:06. > :01:08.and New Year period and they said it was horrific.
:01:09. > :01:11.The resus department cater for nine beds,
:01:12. > :01:16.there was up to 20 people wanting the nine beds.
:01:17. > :01:19.The Ambulance Service called in the British Red Cross to support
:01:20. > :01:22.them as they saw a huge increase in calls over New Year.
:01:23. > :01:25.The Red Cross were supporting ambulance crews and patients,
:01:26. > :01:28.giving them refreshments, they also responded to a small
:01:29. > :01:35.number of emergencies and took some patients home.
:01:36. > :01:37.But the Shadow Health Secretary says things should never
:01:38. > :01:40.The Red Cross has always provided support for elderly people
:01:41. > :01:44.in the community and that is a good thing, we commend them for that,
:01:45. > :01:46.but actually having to be helping out on the front line,
:01:47. > :01:49.supporting the Ambulance Service, I think many people will be shocked
:01:50. > :01:52.and it's a badge of shame for the Government that our NHS
:01:53. > :01:56.is on the brink of crisis or is facing a crisis now.
:01:57. > :01:58.For the Government, the Health Secretary has said
:01:59. > :02:00.that there are problems but he doesn't recognise
:02:01. > :02:02.the description from the British Red Cross
:02:03. > :02:07.of what they call a humanitarian crisis in the health service.
:02:08. > :02:10.The truth is that there are some very severe problems
:02:11. > :02:12.and we are doing everything we can to sort them out.
:02:13. > :02:16.This is the most challenging time of year for the NHS but in the vast
:02:17. > :02:18.majority of cases people watching this programme can be confident
:02:19. > :02:24.that their services are managing to cope despite extreme pressure.
:02:25. > :02:27.And with so much of winter left, there is no early end in sight
:02:28. > :02:37.Residents of a Derbyshire village say they're completely in the dark
:02:38. > :02:40.about the future of some homes if a connecting line to HS2
:02:41. > :02:45.The "spur" line would connect HS2 to Sheffield, 22 miles to the north.
:02:46. > :02:49.Residents fear brand-new homes in the village could end
:02:50. > :02:54.up being demolished, as James Roberson reports.
:02:55. > :02:57.In Newton, Tony Mellors tells me what campaigners believe a spur-off
:02:58. > :03:02.HS2 through Derbyshire would do to their community.
:03:03. > :03:08.It will mean eight houses coming down on this side and seven
:03:09. > :03:13.on the other side as the rail goes straight through.
:03:14. > :03:17.It was last year that residents suddenly found out that a spur-line
:03:18. > :03:19.off the main HS2 route would take high-speed trains through
:03:20. > :03:22.the western edge of their village, right along the edge of a brand-new
:03:23. > :03:29.On the estate, houses are still being built but there's
:03:30. > :03:31.complete uncertainty about some homes' future.
:03:32. > :03:34.Marie knew nothing about the HS2 spur line when she bought
:03:35. > :03:40.It's a big worry and nobody really knows where the stand.
:03:41. > :03:43.I speak to my neighbours and nobody knows what is happening.
:03:44. > :03:45.We we went to the meetings, we have been to two meetings
:03:46. > :03:48.and they just keep saying that there will be compensation.
:03:49. > :03:52.But it has taken a long time for us to save up to buy
:03:53. > :03:57.Residents say Sheffield and Chesterfield will get high-speed
:03:58. > :04:00.trains via this spur line but at the cost of Newton,
:04:01. > :04:03.where some property prices are down 30%, and its environs.
:04:04. > :04:07.The houses that you see being constructed are in
:04:08. > :04:15.The effect is even wider in that during the HS2 construction three
:04:16. > :04:26.out of the four roads in and out of the village will be closed
:04:27. > :04:29.and in a little wider area than we are looking at ten
:04:30. > :04:32.And trail closures, the leisure trails that we have,
:04:33. > :04:35.that we enjoy in this area, will just disappear along
:04:36. > :04:38.HS2 themselves say they work with local communities to understand
:04:39. > :04:41.They want people to attend the forthcoming community
:04:42. > :04:42.information events in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
:04:43. > :04:46.in January and February and to take part in public consultations before
:04:47. > :04:57.Newton residents are holding a public meeting
:04:58. > :05:01.A Leicester saleswoman has admitted two counts of fraud involving
:05:02. > :05:04.Barbara Stone was caught following an investigation
:05:05. > :05:09.led by East Midlands regional Scambuster Team.
:05:10. > :05:11.The 62-year-old from Leicester worked for Aspire Magazine,
:05:12. > :05:15.Stone was a cold-caller who fraudulently sold thousands

:06:50. > :06:53.is high, leaving many feeling unsure about their future.
:06:54. > :06:57.But these teenagers say they are taking control of their lives.
:06:58. > :07:01.I know what I want to do, I've got that positivity in my mind
:07:02. > :07:05.of pushing myself towards it but they don't, so they just need
:07:06. > :07:09.to get their own game plan and push themselves towards it.
:07:10. > :07:15.And I know you need to work hard for stuff.
:07:16. > :07:18.Other people just want everybody else to do their stuff for them.
:07:19. > :07:21.I know that people don't do that for you.
:07:22. > :07:28.He says a lot of the young people he sees can't shake off
:07:29. > :07:31.the reputation of living on the Saffron Lane Estate.
:07:32. > :07:35.I had an instance where a young person told me that they felt that
:07:36. > :07:37.when they had a job interview if they said they were from
:07:38. > :07:39.the Saffron Lane Estate, then that would immediately be
:07:40. > :07:44.The report doesn't make very good reading for this region.
:07:45. > :07:48.Almost a third of young people say they don't feel
:07:49. > :07:53.Many say they feel trapped by their circumstances,
:07:54. > :07:57.with more than one in ten saying they don't believe they can change
:07:58. > :08:01.The research also reveals that 17% of young people think their life
:08:02. > :08:05.will amount to nothing no matter how hard they try.
:08:06. > :08:08.For those of young people that are not in work and whose prospects
:08:09. > :08:11.are not that good at the moment as they see it, this
:08:12. > :08:14.is a slightly worrying trend that there is still a lot of work
:08:15. > :08:16.to be done to get these people into jobs.
:08:17. > :08:19.For many young people, life may seem bleak right now
:08:20. > :08:21.but these teenagers say they are determined they will
:08:22. > :08:29.More than 200 youngsters from schools in Leicester
:08:30. > :08:31.and Leicestershire are taking part in a project merging
:08:32. > :08:47.music with sport to encourage more boys to sing.
:08:48. > :08:51.It's part of a project between the Leicestershire Music Education Hub
:08:52. > :08:55.The boys will be performing at De Montfort Hall in June
:08:56. > :08:57.and are hoping to form a Leicester City choir
:08:58. > :09:01.Football - and what a great draw for the East Midlands.
:09:02. > :09:04.Derby County will play Leicester in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
