:00:17. > :00:18.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Sarah Teale.

:00:19. > :00:21.For years now, former footballer Alan Birchenall has campaigned

:00:22. > :00:23.for defibrillators to be installed at sports grounds.

:00:24. > :00:25.Last night his life was saved by one.

:00:26. > :00:28.The football legend and Leicester City ambassador

:00:29. > :00:31.collapsed at an awards event but he was saved by the emergency

:00:32. > :00:41.He is affectionately known as the Birch.

:00:42. > :00:44.Since the early 1970s, Alan Birchenall has been part of

:00:45. > :00:48.As well as being a former player, he is also known for

:00:49. > :00:52.While handing out awards at the Leicester

:00:53. > :00:58.Mercury sports event last night, Alan collapsed because of

:00:59. > :01:01.His life was saved by nurse Lisa Fereday.

:01:02. > :01:03.She was there because her daughter was nominated

:01:04. > :01:08.I started chest compressions and asked for the

:01:09. > :01:10.automated defibrillator to be brought to me as soon as possible.

:01:11. > :01:15.That was brought quickly to me and all the time, it

:01:16. > :01:17.is obviously important to continue effective chest compressions,

:01:18. > :01:31.When the automated defibrillator came, we attached it

:01:32. > :01:35.which was obviously pivotal in saving his life.

:01:36. > :01:48.After the fourth shock, he came round and was

:01:49. > :01:51.The first thing he said to me was, wow,

:01:52. > :01:54.This doctor has worked with Alan Birchenall at

:01:55. > :01:56.public events to promote the use of defibrillators.

:01:57. > :02:00.The very equipment which kept him alive.

:02:01. > :02:05.There were two things that saved his

:02:06. > :02:12.One was the immediate commencement of resuscitation,

:02:13. > :02:15.compression of the heart and the second thing

:02:16. > :02:20.was the defibrillator that was quickly available and the

:02:21. > :02:25.Is it fair to say he has been overwhelmed by messages

:02:26. > :02:36.I've warned him not to spend too much time trying to respond to them.

:02:37. > :02:41.He is overwhelmed and overjoyed at the support he has had.

:02:42. > :02:45.Leicester City have issued a statement thanking everyone who has

:02:46. > :02:51.helped a lot for the messages of support. He give a message on

:02:52. > :02:55.Facebook saying he hopes to have an operation tomorrow and be out of

:02:56. > :02:59.hospital in the next few days. To all his well-wishers, he said you

:03:00. > :03:04.know one of my favourite songs is Staying Alive. And we wish you a

:03:05. > :03:05.speedy recovery. Breaking news now,

:03:06. > :03:07.and in the last hour, the proposed takeover

:03:08. > :03:13.of the club has collapsed. A consortium led by American John

:03:14. > :03:16.Jay Moores had been in long negotiations to buy an 80 per cent

:03:17. > :03:19.stake in the club. But tonight, current

:03:20. > :03:23.owner Fawaz Al Hasawi said it was with regret

:03:24. > :03:25.and disappointment that In a statement he said, we feel such

:03:26. > :03:30.a deal as it stands is not in the interests of the long-term

:03:31. > :03:33.future of our club. A 16-year-old boy has been

:03:34. > :03:37.jailed for nine years for sexually assaulting two women

:03:38. > :03:39.in Nottingham last autumn. The youth attacked a woman

:03:40. > :03:42.in her twenties near the QMC Fifteen minutes later,

:03:43. > :03:46.he attempted to rape a woman The judge called the attacks

:03:47. > :03:52.violent and degrading. And said it was more shocking

:03:53. > :03:54.that they were carried out They've both been affected terribly,

:03:55. > :04:02.not wishing to leave the house alone, not wishing

:04:03. > :04:04.to go to work anymore. Both females feel extremely

:04:05. > :04:10.frightened and of course, this attack was in daylight, in the early

:04:11. > :04:14.hours of the morning, so they've both made the

:04:15. > :04:18.comment that it is not even as though it was

:04:19. > :04:24.Next tonight - an act of cruelty against a cat which the RSPCA has

:04:25. > :04:34.Just a warning - near the start, Geeta Pendse's report contains

:04:35. > :04:38.Enjoying attention from her owner, Patrick.

:04:39. > :04:40.But 24 hours ago, Millie was attacked outside

:04:41. > :04:48.Patrick's private CCTV camera captured the shocking moment when a

:04:49. > :04:52.My cat was just sat there, being friendly and

:04:53. > :05:00.I felt sick, I felt angry to think that

:05:01. > :05:04.somebody thinks they have the right to do that to a defenceless animal.

:05:05. > :05:07.Millie's suffered swelling to her jaw and is now being treated for a

:05:08. > :05:11.Determined to find out who carried out the attack,

:05:12. > :05:13.Patrick posted the footage onto Facebook and

:05:14. > :05:19.The RSPCA are now investigating and appealing for

:05:20. > :05:22.They say inflicting such an horrific attack on a

:05:23. > :05:23.defenceless cat is sickening and it is

:05:24. > :05:25.important we track down the

:05:26. > :05:33.One football result for you now, and defeat for Derby County,

:05:34. > :05:40.In ice hockey, it's a huge weekend for Nottingham Panthers.

:05:41. > :05:43.They are trying to make history as the first British club

:05:44. > :05:47.They played their first game today and won, as Colin Hazelden

:05:48. > :05:54.Well, we are well underway now in this Continental Cup Final weekend.

:05:55. > :05:58.These are the hometown sport fans, this noisy lot.

:05:59. > :06:01.Panthers playing their opening game of three this

:06:02. > :06:07.afternoon could not have gone better.

:06:08. > :06:09.Two goals from the captain carried them to victory

:06:10. > :06:13.Setting up a fantastic couple of days tomorrow and on Sunday.

:06:14. > :06:19.We played well today, particularly defensively.

:06:20. > :06:22.We played a strong game, but what we've achieved this

:06:23. > :06:24.afternoon, going into tomorrow, it will be all forgotten

:06:25. > :06:27.Yes, as David Clark says, there's plenty more still to go.

:06:28. > :06:33.Tomorrow at two o'clock your time, it's going to be quite an event.

:06:34. > :06:35.It certainly will be, and there'll be live commentary

:06:36. > :06:37.of that on the BBC Nottingham sport Facebook page.

:06:38. > :06:46.So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Sara.

:06:47. > :06:52.It was a wintry start to the day for some of us. Captured nicely by one

:06:53. > :06:59.of our weather watchers in Loughborough. We still have a view

:07:00. > :07:05.wintry showers deny and the weather warning is with regard to ice on

:07:06. > :07:09.untreated surfaces. The showers are coming down through the Cheshire

:07:10. > :07:15.gap, so they will be with us into the early hours. A few will produce

:07:16. > :07:23.no for a time and it is a widespread frost and the bitterly cold night,

:07:24. > :07:29.-3 -4 in rural parts. A cold and frosty start tomorrow, fewer

:07:30. > :07:31.showers, a bright sky, winds light and highs five Celsius. This is the

:07:32. > :07:35.outlook, the weather follows. 5-6 is the best we will have. It

:07:36. > :07:45.stays cold into the beginning of next week as well

:07:46. > :07:46.stop Good evening, a cold, icy night, but some others
