:00:12. > :00:13.And now the news for the East Midlands,

:00:14. > :00:19.A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the sexual abuse

:00:20. > :00:24.Matthew Salmon was found guilty of nine child sex offences,

:00:25. > :00:30.The case only came to light after the NSPCC held a special

:00:31. > :00:34.The lesson persuaded her to come forward and ended

:00:35. > :00:43.It was in a classroom just like this one where a girl finally

:00:44. > :00:46.plucked up the courage to tell her teachers

:00:47. > :00:49.about the sexual abuse she'd been suffering.

:00:50. > :00:51.This week, the NSPCC's visiting schoolchildren here

:00:52. > :00:54.in Nottingham, but it was three years ago in Sandiacre

:00:55. > :00:56.in Derbyshire where concerns were raised

:00:57. > :01:00.The following investigation led to the sentencing

:01:01. > :01:04.of this man, 29-year-old Matthew Salmon from St Ann's in

:01:05. > :01:09.Today he was given 15 years in jail and a further year on

:01:10. > :01:13.licence, for nine sexual offences against a child.

:01:14. > :01:16.It's been the most horrific catalogue of sexual abuse

:01:17. > :01:19.that I've ever had to investigate on a child.

:01:20. > :01:21.Hopefully this will go some way to giving a little

:01:22. > :01:24.bit of closure for the family, and help them move on and

:01:25. > :01:32.Today the court heard how Matthew Salmon carried out multiple

:01:33. > :01:35.sexual assaults, from kissing to the repeated rape of a girl,

:01:36. > :01:39.The abuse started when she was just eight years old.

:01:40. > :01:42.Judge Dickinson QC said she'd suffered the full spectrum of sexual

:01:43. > :01:46.abuse and that, given her age, she clearly couldn't

:01:47. > :01:50.have understood how serious it was.

:01:51. > :01:53.The NSPCC team which helped to uncover this abuse says

:01:54. > :01:58.cases like this highlight the need to raise awareness.

:01:59. > :02:00.Sometimes people who are abused don't actually

:02:01. > :02:04.realise what's happened to them is wrong, because to them it is normal.

:02:05. > :02:08.But they need to understand it's wrong.

:02:09. > :02:10.Our parents support it because they recognise and

:02:11. > :02:13.appreciate that it is important that all children can speak out if they

:02:14. > :02:21.And they want their children to feel like they cando that.

:02:22. > :02:24.And they want their children to feel like they can do that.

:02:25. > :02:27.Now, because they've told it to us, we can spread it to other

:02:28. > :02:30.children if they're having worries and then they can know what to do.

:02:31. > :02:32.Not many people knew about ChildLine.

:02:33. > :02:36.But now they're coming to different schools

:02:37. > :02:37.then a lot more children are knowing.

:02:38. > :02:40.If we get worries and it's getting too big for

:02:41. > :02:42.us to handle, then we can always turn to someone.

:02:43. > :02:45.Today has been a bittersweet moment for the team, who

:02:46. > :02:48.say the horrendous nature of cases like this remind them how important

:02:49. > :02:58.Tonight police have named a woman whose body was found

:02:59. > :03:03.Officers were called to Cromer Street yesterday morning

:03:04. > :03:07.after the suitcase was found by a member of the public.

:03:08. > :03:09.Tonight a 50-year-old man's been charged with her murder.

:03:10. > :03:16.In a quiet residential street in the Stoneygate area of Leicester,

:03:17. > :03:20.police continued their investigation today on Cromer Street and

:03:21. > :03:23.on two nearby roads, searching under cars, on the

:03:24. > :03:27.pathway and in doorways, for evidence about what happened in the

:03:28. > :03:32.Tonight Leicestershire police confirmed the

:03:33. > :03:35.woman found is 46-year-old Kiran Daudia.

:03:36. > :03:37.In a statement, her family said she was

:03:38. > :03:41.a much-loved mum, daughter, sister and auntie,

:03:42. > :03:48.People nearby say they're shocked by what's happened.

:03:49. > :03:52.Because normally, when I go in the evening

:03:53. > :03:55.time - nine o'clock, ten o'clock - we go freely because we've got

:03:56. > :03:58.takeaways on Evington Road so we go freely, and now we're scared.

:03:59. > :04:02.And I don't know what has happened there but

:04:03. > :04:04.it's worrying everybody on the street.

:04:05. > :04:07.Since yesterday we make sure we havestarted locking doors

:04:08. > :04:10.Since yesterday we make sure we have started locking doors

:04:11. > :04:14.The alleyway, we check it out, and of course the front doors,

:04:15. > :04:17.just before we go to bed, make double sure that

:04:18. > :04:21.Obviously, it's worrying because you don't want anything like

:04:22. > :04:32.in wide police confirm a 50-year-old man has been charged with her

:04:33. > :04:38.murder. He will appear before magistrates tomorrow.

:04:39. > :04:41.The family of the former Leicester MP Greville Janner has met

:04:42. > :04:42.the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse,

:04:43. > :04:45.to ask if they can take part in its investigation.

:04:46. > :04:47.His son and two daughters had previously refused to be involved.

:04:48. > :04:51.They felt the inquiry was wrong to take on the case since he's died

:04:52. > :04:55.They deny all allegations against him.

:04:56. > :04:58.Derby's Market Hall remains closed after a man fell to his death

:04:59. > :05:03.He'd been working high up inside the hall, and was taken

:05:04. > :05:05.to the Royal Derby Hospital but died of his injuries.

:05:06. > :05:08.The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

:05:09. > :05:10.Derby City Council, which owns the building,

:05:11. > :05:15.says the hall will not re-open tomorrow.

:05:16. > :05:19.Unions claim hundreds of jobs are at risk at a Derbyshire

:05:20. > :05:22.warehouse which distributes pharmaceuticals and beauty products.

:05:23. > :05:25.Usdaw says up to 300 jobs could go at Alliance Healthcare

:05:26. > :05:29.Meanwhile, hundreds more jobs are under threat at a

:05:30. > :05:34.It comes as the latest unemployment figures show the number of people

:05:35. > :05:38.out of work in the East Midlands fell by 1,000 between September

:05:39. > :05:44.The Alliance Healthcare distribution centre in South

:05:45. > :05:48.Normanton is part of the wider Walgreens Boots Alliance business,

:05:49. > :05:54.We've been told by Usdaw, the shop workers' union,

:05:55. > :05:57.that the firm's told them that up to 300 jobs could

:05:58. > :06:00.It's one of the company's biggest distribution

:06:01. > :06:03.warehouses, sending pharmaceuticals and beauty products

:06:04. > :06:08.Some staff have worked at the site for decades.

:06:09. > :06:14.It could be that we still get a job here, or we could end up

:06:15. > :06:16.at Nottingham. Who's to know?

:06:17. > :06:21.18 years. 21.

:06:22. > :06:23.And Paul... 17.

:06:24. > :06:26.There's a lot of people thats been here a long time as well.

:06:27. > :06:28.Alliance Healthcare say they need to make improvements

:06:29. > :06:32.They're making changes, mainly in South Normanton and

:06:33. > :06:36.They want to keep the impact on jobs as small as

:06:37. > :06:38.possible but, until staff consultation has finished, they

:06:39. > :06:46.The firm says the loss of a major contract,

:06:47. > :06:49.after a client chose to go elsewhere, is the reason they're

:06:50. > :06:51.having to look at reducing the workforce of 781 employees.

:06:52. > :06:54.Meanwhile, in Nottingham, union leaders met bosses from The Pizza

:06:55. > :06:58.Factory, where hundreds of workers are facing redundancy.

:06:59. > :07:00.The Two Sisters Group says it's due to the

:07:01. > :07:10.The Unite union claims 280 jobs are at risk.

:07:11. > :07:13.New figures show that one in every 14 people in the East Midlands

:07:14. > :07:19.The condition can lead to major health complications and costs

:07:20. > :07:25.But it can be prevented through changes to diet and lifestyle.

:07:26. > :07:29.Now mobile diabetes units are touring various locations

:07:30. > :07:32.around the region, to offer advice and tests.

:07:33. > :07:36.Anyone found to have a high risk of type two diabetes is referred

:07:37. > :07:42.Children from across Derbyshire have been taking part in a campaign

:07:43. > :07:48.The Bishop of Derby held a summit to raise awareness of the issue

:07:49. > :07:52.at the city's cathedral, with ten primary schools involved.

:07:53. > :07:59.I felt sad because I've got things that I want,

:08:00. > :08:06.Children like me should be able to play and get a good education,

:08:07. > :08:09.but they're not, they're doing hard work.

:08:10. > :08:12.It made me feel sad and lucky at the same time.

:08:13. > :08:16.According to a report last year, there are 45 million people

:08:17. > :08:20.across the world living in modern slavery.

:08:21. > :08:23.It's a difficult and challenging subject to talk

:08:24. > :08:28.So how do you begin explaining it to children?

:08:29. > :08:30.I began the session by saying, "How many of you always

:08:31. > :08:34.And most admitted they don't because, to be a person,

:08:35. > :08:37.you have your own ideas, you negotiate with your

:08:38. > :08:41.Here are people, children included, who never have a choice what to do

:08:42. > :08:44.or how to spend their time, or the resources to

:08:45. > :08:49.So I hope they're getting a sense of that.

:08:50. > :08:51.Several schools from across Derbyshire are taking

:08:52. > :08:54.part in this campaign, led by the Bishop of Derby,

:08:55. > :09:00.They've been here to learn, but the aim is that they will

:09:01. > :09:02.teach their schoolmates about it too.

:09:03. > :09:05.Modern slavery is a bad thing because they don't

:09:06. > :09:10.It really inspired me to tell people that modern slavery

:09:11. > :09:15.is still going around the UK and other places.

:09:16. > :09:18.Today's event marks the start of six months of awareness-raising

:09:19. > :09:29.That's your news from the East Midlands, so it's goodbye from me.

:09:30. > :09:39.But with your weather now, here's Kaye.

:09:40. > :09:45.Thank you it has been a pleasure. I wish I was ending my forecast with

:09:46. > :09:52.gorgeous clear blue shut skies and plenty of sunshine but alas we've

:09:53. > :09:57.hit the nail on the head with this photograph. Grey, overcast skies

:09:58. > :10:02.with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, and that is sadly how it will stay

:10:03. > :10:07.into tomorrow. A lot of cloud about. It is staying quite mild. The bigger

:10:08. > :10:14.picture, still high pressure in charge. Feeding in, all that cloud

:10:15. > :10:19.and bits of drizzle two. Further south there is a hard frost but it

:10:20. > :10:23.won't get that cold until the weekend. Overnight to night will

:10:24. > :10:27.remain cloudy, misty, murky. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle as

:10:28. > :10:31.well. Winds remain light and temperatures will not get much lower

:10:32. > :10:36.than four or 5 degrees. There won't be a frost tomorrow morning. But it

:10:37. > :10:41.will be cloudy, grey, overcast. The winds will remain light on the

:10:42. > :10:48.temperatures are not doing too badly. But I'm afraid not so much in

:10:49. > :10:53.the way of sunshine. That is how it is set to stay Friday as well. By

:10:54. > :10:57.Friday will get temperatures starting to drop off. Around about

:10:58. > :11:01.six to Greece. Then into the weekend will get the risk of overnight frost

:11:02. > :11:02.with things turning much colder. That's it

:11:03. > :11:04.next few days, no great changes over the next few days, more sunshine on

:11:05. > :11:16.the way. Despite high-pressure sitting across

:11:17. > :11:20.the country so only slow changes in the weather, we have had a variety

:11:21. > :11:26.of different weathers, for example this beautiful sunset in Southampton

:11:27. > :11:30.which was shared by a Weather Watcher, but grey and misty in Derby

:11:31. > :11:34.thanks to an awful lot of cloud around and very little deviation by

:11:35. > :11:37.day or night from the rather grey routine.

:11:38. > :11:41.That is because we have a weather front, albeit very weak and very

:11:42. > :11:44.little wind to move the cloud and the mist on. Those areas furthest

:11:45. > :11:46.from the weather
