:00:19. > :00:24.Nottingham Crown Court was told that Sports Direct unwittingly

:00:25. > :00:28.employed "modern slaves" at its warehouse in Shirebrook.

:00:29. > :00:31.Our social affairs correspondent Jeremy Ball has been

:00:32. > :00:35.following the case, and I asked him what the brothers did.

:00:36. > :00:38.Well, they destroy peoples lives, according to the judge

:00:39. > :00:45.In all, 18 vulnerable men were trafficked over from Poland.

:00:46. > :00:48.We heard they were recruited because they were vulnerable,

:00:49. > :00:53.They were lured here on false promises.

:00:54. > :00:57.Tonight, Erwin and Krystian Markowski beginning

:00:58. > :01:02.They admitted exploiting those workers under

:01:03. > :01:06.We heard that they sent these men to work at Sports Direct

:01:07. > :01:10.through an employment agency, but kept most of their wages.

:01:11. > :01:13.Over a year, we heard, they stole at least ?35,000.

:01:14. > :01:17.You say that they controlled these workers, how?

:01:18. > :01:20.Essentially, it was through threats and violence.

:01:21. > :01:23.We heard that they extorted protection money.

:01:24. > :01:28.When one man complained, he was beaten up and made homeless.

:01:29. > :01:31.We also heard these workers lived in filthy conditions,

:01:32. > :01:33.and that the brothers controlled their bank accounts,

:01:34. > :01:37.and withdrew their earnings through cash machines.

:01:38. > :01:40.Tonight, we've had this reaction from Nottinghamshire's

:01:41. > :01:43.Police Commissioner, who says he's horrified.

:01:44. > :01:54.They've been held as victims, kept as slaves, and treated abominably.

:01:55. > :01:58.And I hope the sentence sends out a strong message that

:01:59. > :02:01.Nottinghamshire Police and the courts aren't going

:02:02. > :02:06.And how were the brothers finally caught?

:02:07. > :02:10.It all ended when one of these victims want into a Nottingham

:02:11. > :02:13.police station and said 11 workers, who were sharing his house,

:02:14. > :02:17.Tonight, we've had a statement from Sports Direct.

:02:18. > :02:21.They've welcomed the brothers' convictions.

:02:22. > :02:23.The firm says it sends a clear message that the exploitation

:02:24. > :02:31.The RSPCA and a vet are demanding action to stop what they call

:02:32. > :02:36.the crisis of horses being cruelly dumped.

:02:37. > :02:39.In the latest case, a mare was tied up and left for dead

:02:40. > :02:43.overnight in the frost, suffering horrific injuries.

:02:44. > :02:46.Animal charities want to know why the law to get horses microchipped

:02:47. > :02:53.The actions of these people, it's a hideous crime.

:02:54. > :02:57.Two months ago, a young horse was dumped with rubbish

:02:58. > :03:02.That was still alive the following morning,

:03:03. > :03:06.On a scale of 1-10 I think that's a ten for suffering.

:03:07. > :03:10.Two weeks ago, a grey mare, thought to have been in labour,

:03:11. > :03:20.On Wednesday evening, three horses - a mare, her foal and another young

:03:21. > :03:26.horse - were found dead in a field near here, in Derbyshire.

:03:27. > :03:28.What do you want to see done about this?

:03:29. > :03:32.I'd like Trading Standards to enforce the law that's

:03:33. > :03:41.Under the passport regulations, these guys should be chipped.

:03:42. > :03:44.Once these guys are chipped, they are a traceable commodity.

:03:45. > :03:51.It says it's seeing more and more horses dumped because people don't

:03:52. > :03:55.want to pay the cost of disposing of the body properly.

:03:56. > :04:08.It wants the Government to take urgent action to...

:04:09. > :04:12.So what do Trading Standards, the enforcers, say about that?

:04:13. > :04:17.There are practical issues around its enforcement.

:04:18. > :04:25.I'm sure it's not having the desired detterent effect

:04:26. > :04:30.There's probably a grey area, in terms of what the RSPCA

:04:31. > :04:35.I think that needs looking at more closely.

:04:47. > :04:50.her back legs tied to railings so she fell, suffering

:05:44. > :05:51.Visiting Bombardier to see London's new Crossrail trains.

:05:52. > :05:56.But the Education Secretary also met graduates and apprentices.

:05:57. > :05:58.She says they're exactly the sort of young people

:05:59. > :06:01.she wants to see emerging from ?170 million of new national

:06:02. > :06:07.The East Midlands engine is a key part of the Industrial Strategy

:06:08. > :06:10.green paper that we've just launched today.

:06:11. > :06:13.I'm here because, within that, skills and making

:06:14. > :06:16.sure our young people have got the skills that companies

:06:17. > :06:18.like Bombardier need is absolutely critical.

:06:19. > :06:21.We know that Germany produces around three times as many

:06:22. > :06:25.technically skilled people coming into its workforce as the UK does.

:06:26. > :06:27.The institutes of technology will enable us to start

:06:28. > :06:31.The Government's talking about investing a lot

:06:32. > :06:34.in apprentices, in more education - do you think this is worthwhile?

:06:35. > :06:38.Especially the rail industry, it's very important to invest in,

:06:39. > :06:41.and for young people to come through.

:06:42. > :06:44.I went to college, did my A-levels in maths and physics.

:06:45. > :06:48.I believe those as a fundamental skill prepares

:06:49. > :06:54.You get the experience and qualifications at the same time.

:06:55. > :06:58.The Education Secretary says at the institutes will provide

:06:59. > :07:06.the skills Britain will need if it's to stay competitive after Brexit.

:07:07. > :07:10.So what do businesses here think of the PM's strategy?

:07:11. > :07:16.A1 Flue Systems, near Ollerton, is the type of manufacturer

:07:17. > :07:22.Family-run for over 40 years, it employs 140 workers,

:07:23. > :07:28.As a company, it wanted Brexit, and is broadly encouraged

:07:29. > :07:36.We have got slight concerns that they are pushing towards technology

:07:37. > :07:39.and not the manufacturing side of things.

:07:40. > :07:42.The company were very pro-Brexit, and we feel it will, eventually,

:07:43. > :07:48.The company has to do all its own training,

:07:49. > :07:53.It's delighted the Government is pledging ?170 million to overhaul

:07:54. > :07:56.technical education, to bridge what's been described

:07:57. > :08:03.We do struggle with skills, because, obviously,

:08:04. > :08:06.school leavers aren't pushed towards manufacturing, they are very

:08:07. > :08:13.We can't get anybody straight out of college to do what we do,

:08:14. > :08:15.so everything is thrown into getting our own skills

:08:16. > :08:21.So, if they are strengthening skills, it would be welcome to us.

:08:22. > :08:23.The biggest business group in the East Midlands

:08:24. > :08:27.It's the first indication that the Prime Minister has listened

:08:28. > :08:32.to what our members have been asking for, which is that business

:08:33. > :08:35.is forefront as part of the Brexit negotiations.

:08:36. > :08:40.The details, how does the strategy and subsequent investment,

:08:41. > :08:44.how does it play out on a practical, local level?

:08:45. > :08:47.Like many other companies, A1 Flue Systems wants

:08:48. > :08:50.business rates reviewed, but says, since the Brexit

:08:51. > :08:58.referendum, it's already seeing more orders than before.
