:00:24. > :00:26.It should have been a fresh start for Peter Fletcher and his partner,

:00:27. > :00:29.Clair, but instead they've fled their Alpine home and returned

:00:30. > :00:38.Trapped for four days as the snow slowly buried their home,

:00:39. > :00:41.Clair and Peter were meant to be starting a new life

:00:42. > :00:44.when they move to Italy but, as the weather got worse,

:00:45. > :00:56.We were petrified, that is probably an understatement.

:00:57. > :00:59.You've got no choice - you've to go, you can't stop.

:01:00. > :01:04.When it's chest high and falling through the snow, you can't do it.

:01:05. > :01:11.If we make it to the road, no one will know we're there.

:01:12. > :01:13.What you do when you're in that situation where,

:01:14. > :01:19.whatever way you turn, that could be it?

:01:20. > :01:22.The bad weather in the region has caused devastation.

:01:23. > :01:25.At a nearby hotel, rescuers have been pulling bodies out

:01:26. > :01:28.after the earthquake caused an avalanche.

:01:29. > :01:30.Clair and Peter were only rescued after they managed to get

:01:31. > :01:34.They know they are lucky to be alive.

:01:35. > :01:38.When they came to rescue us from the house, they didn't

:01:39. > :01:45.We literally had to still make our way to the top of the drive.

:01:46. > :01:55.The family put their life savings into the move abroad and aren't yet

:01:56. > :02:00.sure how bad the damage is but they are not holding out

:02:01. > :02:02.much hope after such a traumatic experience.

:02:03. > :02:13.Our family pet got killed, we had animals that got killed.

:02:14. > :02:16.Everything we own is in that house in Italy.

:02:17. > :02:20.We came away in what we were standing up with.

:02:21. > :02:22.For now, the family is living with relatives as they try to work

:02:23. > :02:26.out their next move but they say, after the events of the last few

:03:30. > :03:33.Campaigners say it will obstruct the view of this beauty spot

:03:34. > :03:39.I've travelled a lot round the world and I think these views are some

:03:40. > :03:42.of the most beautiful I've ever seen and I'd hate them to be lost.

:03:43. > :03:45.Helen Thompson has lived in the area for nearly 30 years.

:03:46. > :03:48.She's leading the campaign against the current plans,

:03:49. > :03:51.which will see the viaduct built here.

:03:52. > :03:54.Instead, she's calling for it to be built on the other side

:03:55. > :03:59.of the canal, making use of the existing railway line.

:04:00. > :04:02.There's lots of existing tracks and the corridor seems quite wide,

:04:03. > :04:05.and we'd like them to see if they can get it in there.

:04:06. > :04:09.At this HS2 consultation event, there was concern

:04:10. > :04:13.Local people going there in the summer,

:04:14. > :04:16.enjoying the environment, and it's destroying it.

:04:17. > :04:23.We believe that the current route is the right balance in terms

:04:24. > :04:25.of the impacts on people and the environment.

:04:26. > :04:28.Is there any hope that the viaduct could be changed from where it

:04:29. > :04:31.currently is going over two the existing railway line instead?

:04:32. > :04:34.We're not expecting at this stage to move it.

:04:35. > :04:38.We will always, as we go forward, seek to improve the design,

:04:39. > :04:41.if we can, but we don't expect at this stage to move it

:04:42. > :04:43.because we think we've struck the right balance.

:04:44. > :04:47.Another event takes place tomorrow in Long Eaton with a consultation

:04:48. > :04:50.on this part of the route closing in March.
