:03:12. > :03:20.Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports.

:03:21. > :03:29.These days it is much more complicated.

:03:30. > :03:31.Many industries rely on labour agencies which hire workers much

:03:32. > :03:33.more flexibly as demand ebbs and flows.

:03:34. > :03:35.They are often self-employed and don't get holiday

:03:36. > :03:38.The Government is concerned that some casual contracts

:03:39. > :03:43.I've been on zero hours for a little while, and it's not fair.

:03:44. > :03:45.Some people have to take it because there's no other choice.

:03:46. > :03:47.It's not fair on those sorts of people.

:03:48. > :03:50.People who've got families, people who got rent to pay, people who are

:03:51. > :03:55.And that's the reason why people are being taken

:04:38. > :04:39.You shouldn't use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

:04:40. > :04:42.Where there are problems it's important they are highlighted and

:04:43. > :04:45.But I think we need to recognise that businesses,

:04:46. > :04:48.employers, employees, and the wider community,

:04:49. > :04:51.it's in everyone's's interests to have a system that

:04:52. > :04:57.Matthew Taylor is now touring the country to investigate modern

:04:58. > :04:59.employment practices, and the government says his review

:05:00. > :05:01.should create an economy that works for all

:05:02. > :05:07.of us, and not just the privileged few.

:05:08. > :05:10.Earlier I spoke to Coral Jenkins from the Unison union and asked

:05:11. > :05:15.for her views on these changes to the way people work.

:05:16. > :05:19.Not all of the changes are bad, but I think we need some

:05:20. > :05:28.Although they may be useful for some aspects of working life,

:05:29. > :05:33.it has a knock-on effect where people can't afford to live.

:05:34. > :05:36.They can't afford to get mortgages, and we need to have a modern review

:05:37. > :05:41.of those contracts that enable people to work and live.

:05:42. > :05:45.But as you suggested, many business people might argue

:05:46. > :05:47.that this suits them, and it suits many

:05:48. > :05:51.Short-term contracts, they start and finish

:05:52. > :05:54.when they like, they can move jobs, so on and so forth.

:05:55. > :05:56.It depends on where they are targeting the short-term contracts.

:05:57. > :06:00.If all the jobs that are going to be on short-term contracts aren't

:06:01. > :06:02.going to enable people to live, or to buy their own property,

:06:03. > :06:06.then there is an issue with the types of short-term

:06:07. > :06:10.contracts and the people they are being offered to.

:06:11. > :06:14.Do you think you we are now way past the traditional

:06:15. > :06:18.image of a job, 9 to 5, a good job, a good

:06:19. > :06:24.Really, this is just modern life, the 24-hour economy.

:06:25. > :06:26.I think there are changes and we are getting beyond that,

:06:27. > :06:32.hardly any jobs nowadays fit into the nine to five remit.

:06:33. > :06:37.We need to be more flexible within how people work,

:06:38. > :06:41.There needs to be a clear, modern review of the type of work

:06:42. > :06:44.and the practices that are needed in the current workforce today.

:06:45. > :06:49.We welcome some of the Taylor review.

:06:58. > :07:01.The latest figures show there are 176,000 claimants in this region.

:07:02. > :07:05.That accounts for 6% of the adult population and is just below

:07:06. > :07:14.According to the think-tank IPPR, just under half of those claiming

:07:26. > :07:34.Shanay Walker died in 2014 in Nottingham from a brain injury.

:07:35. > :07:37.Her aunt and grandmother have both been jailed for cruelty.

:07:38. > :07:40.The social worker said her assessment should have been more

:07:41. > :07:47.robust and it's something she will always think about.

:07:48. > :07:49.A Leicestershire Indian restaurant was shut down on the spot

:07:50. > :07:51.after cockroaches were found in the kitchen.

:07:52. > :07:53.The insects were discovered during an unannounced inspection

:07:54. > :07:56.at Sands in Glenfield which had a level three or satisfactory

:07:57. > :08:04.food hygiene rating as Amy Harris reports.

:08:05. > :08:06.A kitchen infested with cockroaches, these images were captured during an

:08:07. > :08:08.unannounced inspection on a busy Saturday night.

:08:09. > :08:12.The Sands Indian Restaurant was full, but unknown to

:08:13. > :08:18.diners, their food was being prepared among insects alive and

:08:19. > :08:25.They'd not seen this before, cockroaches

:08:26. > :08:26.in the kitchen is not a

:08:40. > :08:44.Officers also found the equipment and food preparation

:08:45. > :08:48.area at the restaurant here in Glenfield were dirty.

:08:49. > :08:50.It was shut down immediately and diners had

:08:51. > :08:55.We have approached Sands Restaurant for comment, and as

:08:56. > :09:00.But on the door is this note to customers,

:09:01. > :09:03.they say they are taking all the necessary steps to ensure they

:09:04. > :09:07.provide the best possible environment for their valued gusts.

:09:08. > :09:11.Until the problem is completely resolved, they will remain closed.

:09:12. > :09:15.They are very keen on getting the business open and running again,

:09:16. > :09:18.from our point of view we will go out there

:09:19. > :09:21.and revisit, advise, but

:09:22. > :09:25.we will not open those premises until we are satisfied they don't

:09:26. > :09:29.Subject to satisfactory reinspection is, it's thought the restaurant

:09:30. > :09:37.Amy Harries, BBC East Midlands Today, Glenfield.

:09:38. > :09:46.So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Lucy.

:09:47. > :09:52.Thank you and good evening. We are sticking with those milder

:09:53. > :10:00.temperatures this weekend but plenty of cloud around. This morning, a few

:10:01. > :10:06.of us saw brightness. Do keep sending those in. It was a cloudy

:10:07. > :10:11.story to end the day. Quite a dramatic cloud there. This evening

:10:12. > :10:15.and overnight plenty of cloud around. We'll see a few outbreaks of

:10:16. > :10:21.motoring, becoming increasingly later into the early hours.

:10:22. > :10:26.Temperature is not going to be too cold, overnight low of five or six

:10:27. > :10:31.Celsius. A little bit of hill fog as well. A mild start of the day

:10:32. > :10:35.tomorrow, cloudy and grey, patches of rain and drizzle fizzle out

:10:36. > :10:44.through the morning. Dry you sue the afternoon and we could see one or

:10:45. > :10:46.two bright intervals particularly further to the east. Temperatures in

:10:47. > :10:56.double figures, maximum of 11. A light wind as well. Saturday, some

:10:57. > :10:59.bright intervals. I leave you with the outlook, Sunday looking OK,

:11:00. > :11:04.of 11. Not too bad for the forthcoming weekend. Here is Nick

:11:05. > :11:09.Miller with a resume of the National weather picture.

:11:10. > :11:12.Hello, rain for some of us today although it won't make much of a

:11:13. > :11:17.dent in the dry winter so far across much of the UK. A few threatening

:11:18. > :11:21.clouds in Cumbria but more than a threat of rain across the pond for

:11:22. > :11:25.Friday. The wettest weather system of the season is over heading into

:11:26. > :11:29.California, and there have been a few, with copious amounts of rain

:11:30. > :11:33.and lots of mountain snow. Record-breaking wet winter so far in

:11:34. > :11:37.parts of California. In Los Angeles this might be conservative, 50-100
