:00:15. > :00:17.First tonight, the East Midlands has one of the highest gender

:00:18. > :00:23.According to new research by PwC, women's wages are - on average -

:00:24. > :00:31.The world of work has changed dramatically over the last century,

:00:32. > :00:33.but when it comes to pay, the overall gap between men

:00:34. > :00:41.Data collected from employers across our region by PWC found

:00:42. > :00:45.we are the second worst region in the UK when it comes

:00:46. > :00:48.to the different amounts men and women tend to earn.

:00:49. > :00:55.And one of the reasons behind this is the types of job

:00:56. > :00:58.and sectors that men and women are typically drawn to.

:00:59. > :01:01.The research shows a high proportion of women work in lower paying

:01:02. > :01:03.sectors such as retail and health services, while men tend to work

:01:04. > :01:10.The average female worker here would need a 26% wage hike,

:01:11. > :01:13.around ?6,800 a year, to be on a par with

:01:14. > :01:21.Although on first sight it looks as though it is just

:01:22. > :01:24.a simple job segregation, I think the issue is a lot more

:01:25. > :01:28.complex, it gets to bigger issues in society about the role that women

:01:29. > :01:34.A lack of flexible working is also a factor.

:01:35. > :01:37.Sasha was only offered full-time work after having a child,

:01:38. > :01:42.so she set up a business helping parents work in a flexible way.

:01:43. > :01:45.A lot of employers are struggling to attract talented parents,

:01:46. > :01:48.particularly women - mums at the moment -

:01:49. > :01:50.so it is helping employers to open up the opportunity

:01:51. > :01:52.to flexible working for the right person.

:01:53. > :01:58.Even that is a step in the right direction.

:01:59. > :02:01.Whilst it is illegal for a company to pay a man more

:02:02. > :02:04.than a woman in the same role, this research suggests overall pay

:02:05. > :02:06.equality could take another 24 years to achieve.

:02:16. > :02:19.heard secret recordings made by the youngster's aunt.

:02:20. > :02:22.It gives an insight into the life of the seven-year-old before

:02:23. > :02:24.she died three years ago from a brain injury.

:02:25. > :02:26.Her aunt and grandmother have since been jailed for cruelty.

:02:27. > :02:36.In this child assessment session recorded after Kay-Ann Morris

:02:37. > :02:38.was granted permanent guardianship of Shanay Walker, the two

:02:39. > :02:40.were thought to have a positive interaction, with no

:02:41. > :02:49.But Shanay's disruptive behaviour at school

:02:50. > :02:52.Using her phone, Kay-Ann covertly recorded a number of meetings

:02:53. > :02:54.she had with teachers, social workers and

:02:55. > :02:57.In September 2013, she and Shanay were asked by her schoolteacher

:02:58. > :02:59.to discuss her bad behaviour, during which Kay-Ann

:03:00. > :03:05.You did wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself.

:03:06. > :03:08.Let's see if it's going to be the last time because you've

:03:09. > :03:12.Let's see if it's going to be the last time, right?

:03:13. > :03:14.But the recording continued as they walked away after the meeting,

:03:15. > :03:17.and Kay-Ann can be heard shouting and swearing at Shanay,

:03:18. > :03:27.The inquest also heard a statement from Sarah Kieran,

:03:28. > :03:31.She attended several meetings between Kay-Ann Morris

:03:32. > :03:33.and Shanay's school, which continued to have

:03:34. > :03:36.meetings about bruising on the seven-year-old.

:03:37. > :03:38.In a secretly recorded call between them, it prompted this

:03:39. > :03:42.It's like everything I realise, Sarah.

:03:43. > :03:47.I said, you just imagine putting yourself in

:03:48. > :03:50.You're coming into school, there's an incident that never happened,

:03:51. > :03:53.but you're getting some judgmental looks and some suggestion.

:03:54. > :03:59.Kay-Ann claimed that Shanay was attempting to self-harm

:04:00. > :04:01.and that the bruising was also from being pushed at school.

:04:02. > :04:04.She also denied hitting her niece with a bath brush.
