:05:13. > :05:15.Next tonight, stark warnings have been issued over the dangers

:05:16. > :05:20.It's estimated that, on average, dirty air shortens lives in the UK

:05:21. > :05:25.Nottingham has some of the most polluted air in the country,

:05:26. > :05:28.but it's pioneering ways to try to tackle the problem,

:05:29. > :05:32.including building the country's first Eco-Expressway.

:05:33. > :05:38.Work is well underway here in Nottingham to create the country's

:05:39. > :05:44.Now, the idea is that one lane will be used solely

:05:45. > :05:48.by public transport, and electric vehicles.

:05:49. > :05:53.It's all about reducing congestion and improving air quality.

:05:54. > :05:57.The idea has been welcomed by officials in Norway,

:05:58. > :06:00.where electric cars are very much the norm.

:06:01. > :06:03.Congratulations to Nottingham, because that is a very

:06:04. > :06:09.Actually, we did the same, and I can assure you that this

:06:10. > :06:12.is a fantastic feeling going in from the suburbs

:06:13. > :06:18.in the taxi lane, seeing the queue just standing close to you.

:06:19. > :06:21.Now, Nottingham City Council is committed to creating a low

:06:22. > :06:28.Carbon city, where public transport is given a priority.

:06:29. > :06:30.They are also investing in electric park-and-ride buses,

:06:31. > :06:34.and trying to encourage the city's hackney cabs to go electric as well.

:06:35. > :06:41.We need pollution levels to come down.

:06:42. > :06:45.We need more people to be using public transport.

:06:46. > :06:48.That is good for current users as well as public transport users.

:06:49. > :06:51.And we have to invest in a green Nottingham for, you know,

:06:52. > :06:55.The Eco-Expressway is due to open later this year,

:06:56. > :06:57.and if it is successful, the council says similar schemes

:06:58. > :07:00.will be rolled out on key routes in and out of the city.

:07:01. > :07:07.Sarah Teale, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottingham.

:07:08. > :07:10.After restrictions to try to combat bird flu were extended in

:07:11. > :07:13.some areas, one city farm in Nottingham feared it might have

:07:14. > :07:19.That was because it couldn't afford all the new netting required

:07:20. > :07:24.But help arrived today, unexpectedly,

:07:25. > :07:29.Stonebridge City Farm has been giving urban dwellers a slice

:07:30. > :07:33.of country life for 40 years and attracts thousands of visitors.

:07:34. > :07:36.Because it is close to the River Trent, it is deemed

:07:37. > :07:40.to be in a high-risk area for contact from wild birds.

:07:41. > :07:44.Many of its 150 birds are enclosed under netting, but around a third

:07:45. > :07:47.have been moved from a barn, and the charity couldn't afford

:07:48. > :07:53.The reason we haven't got ?1,000 is that we are a charity, and we rely

:07:54. > :07:56.on donations to keep us going, so we don't have those funds

:07:57. > :08:01.sloshing around for this sort of project, unfortunately.

:08:02. > :08:03.With so many birds not enclosed on the farm,

:08:04. > :08:07.the whole flock faced a possible cull.

:08:08. > :08:10.Bird flu is highly contagious so chances are if one animal gets it,

:08:11. > :08:13.they will all get it, so we would have to cull

:08:14. > :08:20.them if they have it, they would all have to go.

:08:21. > :08:24.Shortly after your coverage we got a call to the farm,

:08:25. > :08:33.from a woman who said she would like to donate ?1,000.

:08:34. > :08:35.I'm absolutely gobsmacked, because it will make

:08:36. > :08:38.a massive difference to the birds and it will save them.

:08:39. > :08:47.I said, you have juiced me to tears, and she said, I just want to help.

:08:48. > :08:51.The farmer has ordered the netting today and it will be in place

:08:52. > :08:55.The Chief vet's extended restrictions remain in force

:08:56. > :08:57.until at least the end of next month.

:08:58. > :09:00.Quentin Rayner, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottingham.

:09:01. > :09:07.but now let's take a look at the weather.

:09:08. > :09:14.Good evening. It is that time of the week where we look at the weather

:09:15. > :09:18.coming up. This week has not got off to do about a start, with lots of

:09:19. > :09:24.blue skies as we've moved through the day. Some sunny spells in this

:09:25. > :09:28.photo, sent in by a Weather Watcher. As we move through the rest of this

:09:29. > :09:31.week, it will be quite an unsettled picture and we will see some

:09:32. > :09:36.outbreaks of rain at times. Some dry weather mixed in as well. Some

:09:37. > :09:41.brighter spells with temperatures turning slightly milder into mid

:09:42. > :09:45.week. Firstly, through tonight, we have one or two showers to for but

:09:46. > :09:49.it will become increasingly dry into the early hours. A patchy cloud

:09:50. > :09:53.around, so tempered as Bolton wind overnight low of three or four

:09:54. > :09:56.Celsius in towns or cities, and cooler in the countryside where you

:09:57. > :10:00.could see a touch of frost first thing. A cold start to the day

:10:01. > :10:05.tomorrow, with sunny spells around first thing. Starting to see more in

:10:06. > :10:09.the way of height cloud rushing in, and sunshine turning increasingly

:10:10. > :10:15.hazy. Temperature maximum of nine Celsius. Through into the evening,

:10:16. > :10:19.starting to see more in the way of cloud, courtesy of this weather

:10:20. > :10:23.front. Some outbreaks of potentially quite heavy rain. Good news is that

:10:24. > :10:27.it does look like it will largely have cleared by the time we get to

:10:28. > :10:32.Wednesday morning. Plenty cloud around and 12 patches of rain. Some

:10:33. > :10:36.uncertainty as to be timing of that, but it looks like at the moment

:10:37. > :10:40.clearing out as we move into the morning. Most of us seeing a cloudy

:10:41. > :10:47.day with temperatures at a maximum of 12 self-service. Celsius.

:10:48. > :10:51.Thursday, breaker intervals and Chiron and a maximum temperature of

:10:52. > :10:54.12 Celsius. A similar story into Freddy but looks like we will see

:10:55. > :10:59.some outbreaks of light and patchy rain. Temperatures reaching a

:11:00. > :11:01.maximum of 12 Celsius. The outlook, unsettled through this week.

:11:02. > :11:06.well and still rather unsettled with some blustery showers around. That's

:11:07. > :11:07.the London forecast and now for the National forecast, over to Nick

:11:08. > :11:20.Miller. North-west France and Plymouth were

:11:21. > :11:25.miles apart weather-wise. This southern flank in north-west France

:11:26. > :11:29.there was a wind gusts of 120 mph which we just dodged. That area of

:11:30. > :11:33.low pressure continues to move quickly south-eastwards so that by

:11:34. > :11:38.tomorrow it is in Italy on its southern flank, stormy in Sardinia

:11:39. > :11:41.and around it strong winds blowing through south-east France. We've got

:11:42. > :11:45.a little bump in the ice bars with lighter winds, a brief ridge of high

:11:46. > :11:48.pressure, things briefly settled going into tomorrow, overnight there

:11:49. > :11:52.are some showers around moving through western Scotland and

:11:53. > :11:56.north-west England and the Midlands, clearing Wales, one or two in the

:11:57. > :11:59.east, the North Sea tip of high pressure, things briefly settled

:12:00. > :12:00.going into tomorrow, overnight there are some showers around
