:00:15. > :00:16.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:17. > :00:21.Parents, patients and campaigners fighting to keep children's heart

:00:22. > :00:25.surgery at a Leicester hospital have tonight had their chance to put

:00:26. > :00:31.They packed out a room at the Leicester Tigers ground

:00:32. > :00:35.to challenge NHS England on its proposals to transfer surgery

:00:36. > :00:40.from the Glenfield Hospital to Birmingham or Leeds.

:00:41. > :00:42.Our health correspondent, Rob Sissons, is in Leicester.

:00:43. > :00:50.Can you tell us what's happened there tonight, Rob?

:00:51. > :00:58.I went into the meeting, it was extremely lively. There were some

:00:59. > :01:03.tough questions. NHS England were put on the spot and is no doubting

:01:04. > :01:04.the passions of the families, the parents that attending the meeting

:01:05. > :01:06.tonight. Around 100 campaigners came early

:01:07. > :01:08.to show their support ahead The heart unit is under threat

:01:09. > :01:15.because NHS England isn't convinced it will meet new standards,

:01:16. > :01:19.including the 500 operations a year My daughter Stephanie,

:01:20. > :01:29.Glenfield saved her life. It will be heartbreaking

:01:30. > :01:33.for the centre to close. We really need it, it's got such

:01:34. > :01:37.an excellent worldwide reputation. My daughter was treated

:01:38. > :01:40.at Glenfield last year, absolutely fantastic support

:01:41. > :01:43.from the guys there. I just think it's a travesty

:01:44. > :01:47.if they shut it, basically. Tonight, top NHS England officials

:01:48. > :01:54.have heard concerns first-hand Staff at the Glenfield

:01:55. > :01:58.were also at the meeting The reason why we're here today

:01:59. > :02:04.is that we have developed some initial proposals

:02:05. > :02:06.as to the consequences of how We are now out to consultation

:02:07. > :02:11.and we're here in Leicester Many campaigners here say

:02:12. > :02:18.that process is rigged. I would definitely say this

:02:19. > :02:21.process is not rigged. There are no predetermined

:02:22. > :02:24.numbers of centres that NHS It is not known when a decision

:02:25. > :02:29.will be reached but tonight people here are hoping that NHS England

:02:30. > :02:34.officials have listened and the unit which has been under threat

:02:35. > :02:38.for so many years will be saved. Helen Astle,

:02:39. > :02:42.BBC East Midlands Today. Do you think the campaigners got any

:02:43. > :02:56.clear answers tonight? I think there was a lot of heat, I'm

:02:57. > :02:59.not sure how much like there was. We found out a new information but

:03:00. > :03:03.there were some very tough questioning and I think some people

:03:04. > :03:07.thought that NHS England did not give clear answers to some of those

:03:08. > :03:08.questions. I asked people what they thought had been achieved.

:03:09. > :03:13.They've used out of date data and the travel times they seriously

:03:14. > :03:17.I don't think any of them have ever travelled to Birmingham.

:03:18. > :03:22.But still on a number of occasions they've been asked questions

:03:23. > :03:25.and they would not give a straight answer.

:03:26. > :03:28.They would wield lots of waffle and personally I think they can't

:03:29. > :03:36.answer a question without putting it through the NHS lawyers.

:03:37. > :03:46.All of this dates back to the Bristol heart scandal of the 1990s.

:03:47. > :03:47.Leicester West MP Liz Kendall told me it has all been going on far too

:03:48. > :03:48.long. Parents said really clearly tonight,

:03:49. > :03:50.when you have got an incredibly poorly child, your life

:03:51. > :03:53.is completely thrown in the air. One woman said, you go

:03:54. > :03:55.to hell and back every day. It's just not right and fair

:03:56. > :03:59.that there has been so much uncertainty when our children's

:04:00. > :04:20.heart surgery has excellent outcomes I do not think anyone would doubt

:04:21. > :04:28.it achieved anything, the meeting? it achieved anything, the meeting?

:04:29. > :04:30.We'll have to see. An Escher -- NHS England wants to implement its plans

:04:31. > :04:32.next April. In other news, an inquiry's under

:04:33. > :04:34.way following the discovery of a man's body and a seriously

:04:35. > :04:37.injured woman at a house Officers were called

:04:38. > :04:40.to Holland Crescent shortly A young child was also found

:04:41. > :04:46.inside the house, unharmed. Detectives say they're not currently

:04:47. > :04:49.looking for anyone else in connection with the incident

:04:50. > :04:51.but are conducting A former Nottingham social worker,

:04:52. > :04:57.who uncovered a child migration scandal, today shared some

:04:58. > :05:01.of her harrowing findings The Independent Inquiry

:05:02. > :05:07.into Child Sexual Abuse was told by Margaret Humphreys how "torture,

:05:08. > :05:10.rape and slavery" were covered up The smiling faces of British

:05:11. > :05:19.children who were shipped across the Empire but today

:05:20. > :05:22.the national enquiry heard they were deported and raped

:05:23. > :05:25.and this was the most catastrophic Look at the violations that we've

:05:26. > :05:33.heard them talk about to us. Kidnapping, sexual abuse in the UK

:05:34. > :05:37.before they were sent, Starting all over again

:05:38. > :05:43.in various institutions Margaret's 30-year quest for justice

:05:44. > :05:49.prompted this feature film. Today she described how victims

:05:50. > :05:52.were stripped of their identity, some were flogged just for singing

:05:53. > :05:57.British nursery rhymes. The inquiry heard how she set up

:05:58. > :06:00.the Child Migrants Trust in Nottinghamshire after victims

:06:01. > :06:03.who had been told they were orphans One mother went to visit

:06:04. > :06:09.a children's home as her son He said as the train pulled out

:06:10. > :06:13.she was screaming and crying, get the children off,

:06:14. > :06:15.get the children off. Her boy put his face

:06:16. > :06:21.to the window and shouted I'll Doctor Humphreys told the enquiry

:06:22. > :06:26.that white children were selected for migration to preserve

:06:27. > :06:31.the British Empire's racial unity. She said many were used

:06:32. > :06:34.as slave labour on farms. Margaret Humphreys also

:06:35. > :06:36.told the enquiry that records about children

:06:37. > :06:39.were deliberately destroyed. Social workers who raised

:06:40. > :06:42.concerns were ignored and her West Bridgford-based charity

:06:43. > :06:46.has now reunited well over 1,000 Jeremy Ball, East Midlands Today at

:06:47. > :06:55.the child abuse inquiry in London. Now, this time yesterday

:06:56. > :06:57.evening we were trying to digest the contents

:06:58. > :06:59.of Chancellor Philip Today, clearer details have emerged

:07:00. > :07:04.about what it means for our region. ?90 million is to be spent boosting

:07:05. > :07:08.the East Midlands economy. It includes regenerating Derby city

:07:09. > :07:11.centre and creating a space Road links will also be improved

:07:12. > :07:16.around Loughborough and money will be spent enhancing town

:07:17. > :07:19.centres in Nottinghamshire. Sherwood Forest's heroes became

:07:20. > :07:25.legends by handing out This afternoon the local

:07:26. > :07:28.Growth Minister was walking in the outlaw's footsteps

:07:29. > :07:31.with ?63 million in his back pocket to boost growth

:07:32. > :07:35.in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Half a million of that is going

:07:36. > :07:38.to help build a new visitor The bulk will go towards

:07:39. > :07:41.regenerating sites A big vote of confidence

:07:42. > :07:45.in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It will help us create over

:07:46. > :07:49.6,500 jobs, ?150 million of private investment,

:07:50. > :07:52.over 600 homes and 2,000 learners. That's a good result for our local

:07:53. > :07:57.enterprise partnership. It's one of the biggest allocations

:07:58. > :08:00.in the country and I think that demonstrates that the government

:08:01. > :08:02.have got confidence that we can deliver the jobs

:08:03. > :08:06.and the growth that they want. The East Midlands' slice is only

:08:07. > :08:09.a quarter of the overall growth fund for the Midlands but the minister

:08:10. > :08:12.doesn't swallow the idea this side The idea that government goes around

:08:13. > :08:17.picking winners between different Of course we are investing

:08:18. > :08:23.in the East Midlands, as we're investing in the West Midlands,

:08:24. > :08:25.as we're investing in Yorkshire and Humber and the Northwest

:08:26. > :08:27.because we're absolutely genuine when we say we want to create

:08:28. > :08:30.an economy that does His colleague, the minister

:08:31. > :08:33.for the Midlands engine came bearing gifts for

:08:34. > :08:35.Leicester and Leicestershire. Marcus Jones said space technology

:08:36. > :08:38.with Leicester at its hub was crucial to the UK's growth,

:08:39. > :08:41.so there was one million for an extension at the National

:08:42. > :08:44.Space Centre and ?13 million Another ?12 million is available

:08:45. > :08:49.for road improvements around We had the launch of the enterprise

:08:50. > :08:56.zones this last month and now it's backed up with some real

:08:57. > :08:58.substantial funding today. It's ?26 million so, yeah,

:08:59. > :09:00.a really significant day because we have got some money

:09:01. > :09:02.to put behind things. Sherwood Forest's new centre should

:09:03. > :09:05.be built by next spring. It's unclear when other

:09:06. > :09:08.projects will get going. Quentin Rayner,

:09:09. > :09:12.BBC East Midlands Today. A couple who set up a charity

:09:13. > :09:15.to create bereavement suites on maternity wards have had

:09:16. > :09:19.a Nottingham tram named after them. Michelle and Richard Daniels set up

:09:20. > :09:23.Forever Stars in 2013 after their daughter

:09:24. > :09:26.Emily was stillborn. They raised ?100,000

:09:27. > :09:29.for a specialist area at the Queen's Medical Centre

:09:30. > :09:31.and aim to open a second So, it's goodbye from me but

:09:32. > :09:41.with your weather now, here's Sara. It was nice to see the sunshine

:09:42. > :10:21.today, even The cloud is thickening up all the

:10:22. > :10:24.time. It will be a bright start tomorrow and the cloud will increase

:10:25. > :10:30.and it brings some light rain and drizzle as we head into the

:10:31. > :10:33.afternoon. Misty conditions so hill fog possible in the Peak District

:10:34. > :10:39.and the wind is coming from the south. It will be lighter but the

:10:40. > :10:42.daytime temperature will be ten or 11 Celsius. A weather front

:10:43. > :10:46.overnight into Saturday and Saturday looks like it might be cloudy so

:10:47. > :10:51.they could be a bit of cloud before the rain works its way in. It will

:10:52. > :10:57.still be a mild day. The milder air is with us that it changes by the

:10:58. > :11:01.time the second weather front works its way through on Sunday. Sunday

:11:02. > :11:02.the what a day of the two. Now the Outlook.

:11:03. > :11:10.day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe spots of rain.

:11:11. > :11:17.Good evening, in the spring sunshine we saw temperatures as high as 17.5

:11:18. > :11:20.Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled

:11:21. > :11:25.weather in the forecast for the next few days. This was the sunset

:11:26. > :11:28.captured by one of our Weather Watchers. Clear skies there. We have

:11:29. > :11:31.had increasing amounts of cloud moving in from the West. Through the

:11:32. > :11:35.remainder of tonight we will continue to see that cloud across

:11:36. > :11:38.the south-west of England, the Channel Isles, weaving in across

:11:39. > :11:42.Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Bringing with it some

:11:43. > :11:45.outbreaks of drizzly rain, particularly around the coast and

:11:46. > :11:49.the hills. Further east, clear skies and the coldest temperatures. We are

:11:50. > :11:53.likely to see frost across eastern parts of Scotland by Friday morning.

:11:54. > :11:56.The west of Scotland will see the cloud moving in, bringing spots of

:11:57. > :11:58.light, drizzly rain. A similar
