:00:12. > :00:13.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:14. > :00:18.First tonight, the terror attack in London.

:00:19. > :00:20.An extensive police operation's still underway after those events

:00:21. > :00:22.on Westminster Bridge and at the Palace of Westminster.

:00:23. > :00:25.Some of our MPs were close by when the deadly

:00:26. > :00:44.I was walking with lots of other MPs from Portcullis House

:00:45. > :00:46.towards the main building, the House of Commons

:00:47. > :00:48.chamber, and suddenly heard the shots ring out.

:00:49. > :00:50.You know, there was lots of yelling, people

:00:51. > :00:52.shouting to get on the floor, to go back.

:00:53. > :00:55.Yes, a very, very shocking incident and thoughts are with those

:00:56. > :01:02.People can attack this building, but this building

:01:03. > :01:06.In the end, freedom and democracy will win, and I think that is

:01:07. > :01:14.Lots of people vote for me, but lots of

:01:15. > :01:17.people don't vote for me, and that is the beauty of democracy.

:01:18. > :01:19.We will never let people like this defeat us

:01:20. > :01:25.Well, afterwards, police kept everyone

:01:26. > :01:29.Houses of Parliament while they checked credentials.

:01:30. > :01:32.One of those caught up in all of this was our

:01:33. > :01:34.political editor, Tony Roe, who joins us now.

:01:35. > :01:37.Tony, what was happening during the five hours that

:01:38. > :01:40.you were effectively trapped inside the building?

:01:41. > :01:46.We heard shouting from the entrance to Portcullis House,

:01:47. > :01:48.which is where the MPs have their offices.

:01:49. > :01:51.It is the big, new glass building and I was sitting there,

:01:52. > :01:55.There was a panic near the entrance and what

:01:56. > :01:57.sounded like somebody shouting very loudly on a megaphone.

:01:58. > :01:59.We thought there was somebody trying to get

:02:00. > :02:02.into the building at first, but then you could see people

:02:03. > :02:06.in the street running away from Westminster Bridge

:02:07. > :02:14.And people were coming into the building as well.

:02:15. > :02:18.One person said to me that he was going through security at the time,

:02:19. > :02:21.he was a visitor to Parliament and he said he was ushered through

:02:22. > :02:24.quickly before he had his checks completed.

:02:25. > :02:27.And as we were ushered in, we were told to get to the back

:02:28. > :02:30.of the building, as far away from the road as we could

:02:31. > :02:33.and at that point, police came out of the back of the

:02:34. > :02:38.The police were running into something they probably

:02:39. > :02:41.didn't know anything about and we have seen

:02:42. > :02:48.And when we were escorted from the building

:02:49. > :02:49.after nearly five hours, were taken out of a side entrance

:02:50. > :02:53.of the House of Commons and the road Those same police

:02:54. > :02:57.who lost one of their Next, an exclusive interview

:02:58. > :03:04.with the head of the Independent Alexis Jay has confirmed

:03:05. > :03:07.that her investigation into Nottinghamshire children's

:03:08. > :03:11.homes will be underway within days. The inquiry's setting up an office

:03:12. > :03:13.in the East Midlands, It's also looking at allegations

:03:14. > :03:17.against the former Leicester Here's our Social Affairs

:03:18. > :03:25.Correspondent, Jeremy Ball. CCTV captures a Derby grooming gang,

:03:26. > :03:28.luring girls as young as 12 A former Leicester MP who died

:03:29. > :03:34.after being charged with a catalogue of child sex offences,

:03:35. > :03:37.and a Nottingham children's home where a police investigation

:03:38. > :03:40.has prompted hundreds Visiting that city today,

:03:41. > :03:44.the professor who is leading the vast inquiry into child sexual

:03:45. > :03:46.abuse is about to formally open her own investigation

:03:47. > :03:52.into homes in Nottinghamshire. We do want to make a difference

:03:53. > :03:55.to the victims, but the other aspect of our objectives in the inquiry

:03:56. > :03:58.are to make recommendations We are going to set up a local

:03:59. > :04:01.arrangement for people to come forward

:04:02. > :04:03.to The Truth Project. They will be treated

:04:04. > :04:07.in a confidential manner with support if they do come forward

:04:08. > :04:09.to talk to us. I do know something about

:04:10. > :04:15.the behaviour of institutions... It is important to hear

:04:16. > :04:17.their story, their experiences The one thing that we have to do

:04:18. > :04:22.is we have to create a society The independent inquiry has

:04:23. > :04:31.already heard from a former Nottingham social worker,

:04:32. > :04:32.Margaret Humphreys, who traced children in care who were shipped

:04:33. > :04:35.across the British Empire but, after so many years, what can

:04:36. > :04:41.the abuse inquiry really achieve? Many people who have been

:04:42. > :04:43.abused in Nottingham and elsewhere can come forward

:04:44. > :04:46.and share their experiences with us. It is not intended to be

:04:47. > :04:48.therapeutic, but it For the survivors of child sexual

:04:49. > :04:59.abuse, the memories won't fade, and the professor's independent

:05:00. > :05:02.inquiry won't bring back The hope is that it can at least

:05:03. > :05:13.protect future generations. Nottingham's been awarded nearly

:05:14. > :05:15.one million pounds to help The Government cash will be spent

:05:16. > :05:19.installing more than 30 charging points around the city for private

:05:27. > :05:38.fleet of electric buses. The owners of a Derbyshire caravan

:05:39. > :05:41.site have been threatened with jail if they cut down any

:05:42. > :05:44.more protected trees. Amber Valley Borough Council has

:05:45. > :05:46.served an injunction on Haytop Country Park

:05:47. > :05:48.in Whatstandwell after trees were chopped down last week,

:05:49. > :05:50.in the face of Last month the owners,

:05:51. > :05:53.Countrywide Park Homes, evicted dozens of people living

:05:54. > :05:56.at the site, citing safety concerns. The company won't comment

:05:57. > :06:08.on the injunction. A retired teacher went on trial

:06:09. > :06:13.today accused of sex offences Christopher Metcalfe denied

:06:17. > :06:18.locations near Mansfield It is claimed he took advantage

:06:19. > :06:31.of three underage girls. The allegations date

:06:32. > :06:34.back to the 1970s, the first when he was

:06:35. > :06:36.a newly qualified teacher. It was heard he sexually

:06:37. > :06:40.touched a girl during story time, and then

:06:41. > :06:45.after a swimming lesson. He is also charged with

:06:46. > :06:49.indecently assaulting another girl aged nine or ten years old,

:07:13. > :07:15.saying he would get her if Prosecuting Sarah Knight said

:07:16. > :07:23.Christopher Metcalfe took advantage of his position

:07:24. > :07:26.of trust and authority. She said the women had not

:07:27. > :07:29.colluded, they don't know each other, and their

:08:01. > :08:03.and the central reservation. James Roberson's been watching

:08:04. > :08:21.the work taking place. I'm above the age of 38 and if we

:08:22. > :08:27.look over the bowler straight here, we can see some of the litter bag

:08:28. > :08:32.others along this major route to the East Midlands. With me is Simon from

:08:33. > :08:37.Amber Valley Borough Council. Simon, this is a big problem and the third

:08:38. > :08:44.night you've had your litter picker uppers out? Yes, it is a major

:08:45. > :08:47.operation. We have to do road closures and we have three gangs

:08:48. > :08:53.working along the road to get as much of the litter up as possible.

:08:54. > :08:58.Is it a growing problem? Do you have to do it every year? Yes, and it

:08:59. > :09:04.varies from year to year. It's better this year and we have the

:09:05. > :09:11.message is getting through now. And also to make sure commercial weights

:09:12. > :09:15.is properly collected, too. But it's dangerous to do this? Whether or

:09:16. > :09:18.yes, everything is in place in terms of operative safety never would

:09:31. > :09:32.But with your weather forecast now, here's Lucy.

:09:33. > :09:38.Quite heavy outbreaks of rain, but as we move into tomorrow,

:09:39. > :09:41.it does mean we will see an improving picture.

:09:42. > :09:43.After a fairly damp start, things will start to

:09:44. > :09:46.brighten up and we will see some sunny spells developing.

:09:47. > :09:47.Temperatures slightly up on today as well.

:09:48. > :09:50.Here is what is going on in the bigger picture.

:09:51. > :09:52.This secluded front has come up from the South

:09:53. > :09:55.West, pivoted around, and then it will make its way back out towards

:09:56. > :09:58.the south west as we move through the night.

:09:59. > :10:01.That means we are looking at more rain on the way as we move

:10:02. > :10:09.That band of rain has made its way over

:10:10. > :10:13.to the east and is now coming back toward the West courtesy of that

:10:14. > :10:17.There will be some clear spells through the night, and we could see

:10:18. > :10:19.one or two patches of mist and fog developing.

:10:20. > :10:21.Temperatures falling to an overnight low of four Celsius

:10:22. > :10:24.in towns and cities, slightly cooler out in the countryside.

:10:25. > :10:25.A chilly start tomorrow and a

:10:26. > :10:29.Quite quickly, that rain clears out and behind that, we will see

:10:30. > :10:30.bright intervals developing and sunny spells.

:10:31. > :10:32.Largely dry and temperatures reaching a maximum of

:10:33. > :10:35.11 Celsius, so slightly up on today and add in that North easterly

:10:36. > :10:40.Into Friday then and high-pressure mainly in charge of

:10:41. > :10:44.It does look like it will be quite settled.

:10:45. > :10:47.Some bright intervals developing and temperatures reaching
