:00:00. > :00:14.And now the news for the East Midlands.

:00:15. > :00:20.First tonight, the long stand-off between Derby City Council

:00:21. > :00:25.The industrial dispute over pay had become one of the longest

:00:26. > :00:31.It began after the authority imposed new contracts which meant some staff

:00:32. > :00:36.After ten months of strikes, they've accepted the council's

:00:37. > :00:38.latest offer but not all parents are impressed.

:00:39. > :00:47.Strikes, protests, and demonstrations.

:00:48. > :00:54.This long, bitter dispute has been conducted with the volume raised.

:00:55. > :00:57.Even the council leader hasn't held back.

:00:58. > :01:02.But today both sides were singing from the same hymn sheet.

:01:03. > :01:06.I'm delighted as an individual and on behalf of the council

:01:07. > :01:10.and the city that we have managed to resolve this dispute.

:01:11. > :01:13.How do you go about rebuilding a relationship with the council

:01:14. > :01:16.after everything all that's been said and done over

:01:17. > :01:20.I look forward to working with Councillor Baggy Shanker

:01:21. > :01:24.who has taken a personal interest in this dispute and been key

:01:25. > :01:30.The offer accepted by school support staff today includes a ?2 million

:01:31. > :01:37.It will include one-off payments to the worst affected staff

:01:38. > :01:40.and the reinstatement of 52-week contracts.

:01:41. > :01:44.Parents we spoke to outside this school had mixed

:01:45. > :01:48.In my opinion, why putus through 60 days of strikes

:01:49. > :01:51.if they are just going to give them what they wanted anyway.

:01:52. > :01:54.We are happy and hopefully it is never going to happen again.

:01:55. > :02:03.Does the council owe parents and children an apology for how

:02:04. > :02:06.things have been handled and the disruption to their lives?

:02:07. > :02:10.I, on behalf of the ocuncil, apologise to anybody who has

:02:11. > :02:15.That is not an issue that any of us take lightly.

:02:16. > :02:19.Certain details are still to be agreed but we are unlikely

:02:20. > :02:29.I'm joined now by Jemma Walker, a mother in Derby whose son George

:02:30. > :02:35.is a special needs pupil and lost school time during those strikes.

:02:36. > :02:53.I think this was handled really badly. Our children have had over 70

:02:54. > :02:59.days of school, we are still waiting to hear from Derby City Council

:03:00. > :03:03.about letters of complaint that have gone in and we have had nothing, no

:03:04. > :03:10.acknowledgement of the letters or anything. And as we heard there, 60

:03:11. > :03:18.days of strike action. What has the effect been on your son? It has been

:03:19. > :03:21.awful. His behaviour has deteriorated, he doesn't know if

:03:22. > :03:26.he's coming or going, he is very agitated at the moment. We have had

:03:27. > :03:29.tears again tonight because he doesn't particularly want to go to

:03:30. > :03:34.school again now because he has had such a long time off. A lot of the

:03:35. > :03:39.children that are in the school have the same behavioural issues. We have

:03:40. > :03:43.behaviour. It has affected the behaviour. It has affected the

:03:44. > :03:49.children quite badly and it has affected the family. There are two

:03:50. > :03:55.sides to any dispute but do you want an apology from the council? An

:03:56. > :03:58.apology would be nice. Just reassurance that it's anything like

:03:59. > :04:03.this happened again, we wouldn't just be left to try and get on with

:04:04. > :04:08.our lives. Parents have lost their jobs because they had to take time

:04:09. > :04:11.off work. It is not fair. Our lives are hard enough as it is without

:04:12. > :04:15.losing school as well. Thank you. Nottinghamshire Police say they've

:04:16. > :04:17.received a lot of information after yesterday's appeal

:04:18. > :04:19.to the missing mother Samantha from Newark went

:04:20. > :04:24.missing last Monday. It's believed she's with her two

:04:25. > :04:26.boys, six-year-old Louis Her disappearance comes

:04:27. > :04:32.after a family court removed the children from Samantha's care

:04:33. > :04:35.and made them wards of court. A senior officer in the case

:04:36. > :04:38.says they're pursuing A retired teacher's been cleared

:04:39. > :04:45.today of three historic sex attacks Three women had accused

:04:46. > :04:50.Christopher Metcalfe, including an allegation he raped one

:04:51. > :04:54.of them when she was in his care at the former Skegby Hall care home

:04:55. > :04:57.near Sutton in Ashfield. A jury at Derby Crown Court

:04:58. > :05:03.cleared him of that and two counts of indecent assault

:05:04. > :05:06.on other children. The jury failed to reach verdicts

:05:07. > :05:09.on two other counts. The prosecution's now got three

:05:10. > :05:13.weeks to decide how to proceed. The Queen has today paid tribute

:05:14. > :05:17.to an historic cavalry regiment which recruits here in the East

:05:18. > :05:19.Midlands. In a ceremony at Windsor Castle,

:05:20. > :05:23.Her Majesty handed over an heraldic banner, or guidon as it's properly

:05:24. > :05:27.called, to the Royal Lancers. She described them as a force

:05:28. > :05:31.without match and said their loyalty and devotion had never been found

:05:32. > :05:36.wanting in more than 300 years. One in five people in

:05:37. > :05:39.the East Midlands are risking potentially fatal health problems

:05:40. > :05:43.because they prefer ordering A partnership of charities working

:05:44. > :05:50.to tackle conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease has

:05:51. > :05:53.carried out research It's now urging people

:05:54. > :05:58.to swap the takeaway It seems our obsession with fast

:05:59. > :06:09.food could risk that happening. The fear being that the high salt,

:06:10. > :06:13.high fat content in many meals In a world of choice, this

:06:14. > :06:18.is the firm favourite, with more than a quarter of us

:06:19. > :06:22.preferring a Chinese takeaway. An average portion of

:06:23. > :06:26.spring rolls and a sweet and sour chicken and rice

:06:27. > :06:31.is an astonishing 2200 calories. That, according to health

:06:32. > :06:36.campaigners, is the problem. Alongside traditional fish

:06:37. > :06:40.and chips, this shop offers fish in light flour,

:06:41. > :06:43.salad and chips cooked Part of a county council scheme

:06:44. > :06:49.for lower fat fast food. We felt we had a moral obligation

:06:50. > :06:54.to customers to not necessarily make them think they are coming

:06:55. > :06:57.in for healthier fish and chips but just giving them

:06:58. > :07:00.healthier fish in chips. We are slowly educating them

:07:01. > :07:04.that there is a healthier option But what about our high

:07:05. > :07:08.calorie favourite? How many people would

:07:09. > :07:10.choose the takeaway over Who knows how to cook Chinese?

:07:11. > :07:17.Not me. Take it away because it

:07:18. > :07:21.saves messing about. Do you realise it's got

:07:22. > :07:26.almost 2200 calories? So more work to do,

:07:27. > :07:34.according to campaigners, before more of us bring back home

:07:35. > :07:42.for dinner a healthier outlook. With us tonight is Nottinghamshire

:07:43. > :08:05.County Council's Dan Flecknoe, evaluation to be done on this but so

:08:06. > :08:11.far the healthier options takeaway scheme has had very good buy in from

:08:12. > :08:14.local businesses and we have had minimal dropouts which suggests

:08:15. > :08:22.people are not losing money. I suppose it is good for the image.

:08:23. > :08:24.Absolutely. It enables local businesses to showcase their

:08:25. > :08:30.responsible attitudes towards helping the community to be healthy.

:08:31. > :08:35.Is education still the key? The message needs to get through before

:08:36. > :08:38.people stepped foot in a takeaway? Absolutely, but there are so many

:08:39. > :08:43.barriers to people eating healthily. The philosophy this scheme is based

:08:44. > :08:46.on is that many people want to eat healthily and definitely want their

:08:47. > :08:51.children to eat healthily but there are lots of barriers to them doing

:08:52. > :08:55.that and the accessibility and ubiquity of takeaway food, which is

:08:56. > :08:59.often very high calorie, is one of them. By making more choices

:09:00. > :09:05.available, we hope to impact their health in a positive way. Councils

:09:06. > :09:10.They licensed takeaway is. Is there They licensed takeaway is. Is there

:09:11. > :09:16.something that can be done there? It is an option. There are many options

:09:17. > :09:21.in tackling the food environment. At the moment we prefer a more softly,

:09:22. > :09:23.softly approach. Not pushing things on people and not banning things.

:09:24. > :09:25.Thank you. So, it's goodbye from me, but

:09:26. > :09:29.with your weather now, here's Mel. It has been a fine end to the day

:09:30. > :09:35.with some evening sunshine on offer The cloud is a feature

:09:36. > :09:43.but it is a fine day and we should see some break from the cloud

:09:44. > :09:45.allowing spring sunshine Today we saw the cloud spill

:09:46. > :09:49.out from the north-west It was quite fragmented

:09:50. > :09:53.so most of us got to see Overnight it looks as though that

:09:54. > :09:58.cloud will once again Where we get to see some

:09:59. > :10:02.lengthy clear spells, temperatures in sheltered rural

:10:03. > :10:05.spots could dip as low as freezing. But on the whole a minimum

:10:06. > :10:07.temperature of around A bit fresh in places

:10:08. > :10:16.but on the whole another fine day. Where we do find breaks in the

:10:17. > :10:20.cloud, temperatures will respond. And it is a repeat performance

:10:21. > :10:29.as we head into Friday. The cloud will lift and break

:10:30. > :10:32.a little more readily on Friday to give us a bit more in the way

:10:33. > :10:35.of sunshine but it is Towards the weekend,

:10:36. > :10:41.the area of high pressure starts to move towards the near continent,

:10:42. > :10:45.opening the gate for this warm air After a fresh start on Saturday,

:10:46. > :10:51.temperatures will start to respond and by Sunday we could see those

:10:52. > :10:55.temperatures in the high teens. I will leave you with

:10:56. > :11:04.the outlook now. or 15. It is sunny towards the

:11:05. > :11:08.weekend and we could see the low 20s by Sunday. Here is Darren with the

:11:09. > :11:14.national weather. Hello. The weather has been a big

:11:15. > :11:20.news in North America across the Masters in Augusta, for the first

:11:21. > :11:24.time the par-3 competition was abandoned, the storms moving away

:11:25. > :11:29.and sunshine windy for a while. Temperatures about 17, which is on a

:11:30. > :11:32.par with what we had today in the south-east of Wales, blue skies

:11:33. > :11:36.around here. That's from one of our weather watchers. More sunshine over

:11:37. > :11:40.the next few days. Little or no rain once again, it's looking dry and as

:11:41. > :11:41.we get more sunshine, especially in England and Wales this weekend, it

:11:42. > :11:42.will be
