:02:25. > :02:27.on just ten pounds a week because of problems with the former

:02:28. > :02:31.Ex-miners say the way the fund was set up more than twenty years

:02:32. > :02:35.ago has allowed successive governments to take out

:02:36. > :02:39.Today a national campaign group held its first open

:02:40. > :02:48.More than two decades on, passions were running high

:02:49. > :02:53.at the Mineworkers pension Association meeting in Mansfield.

:02:54. > :02:56.As far as I'm concerned they should be disbanded.

:02:57. > :03:09.When British Coal was privatised in 1994 changes were made

:03:10. > :03:14.In return for providing a guarantee against insolvency it was agreed

:03:15. > :03:16.the Government would share a 50-50 split of any surplus

:03:17. > :03:19.with the scheme, while not having to make any payments into it.

:03:20. > :03:22.Today the Government has received ?3.3 billion in shared surpluses.

:03:23. > :03:27.But ministers say the arrangement gives trustees the freedom

:03:28. > :03:31.to generate surpluses and therefore bonuses for members.

:03:32. > :03:37.We estimate or pensions have been cut basically the Government,

:03:38. > :03:47.our members should be on double what they're actually

:03:48. > :03:50.And what sort of hardship is that causing?

:03:51. > :03:59.We have widows that there are on so little as ?10 a week

:04:00. > :04:00.from the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme.

:04:01. > :04:04.The meeting was told the campaign has the unswerving support

:04:05. > :04:07.I believe very passionately in what is right and what is wrong.

:04:08. > :04:10.That money belongs in those miners' pockets and if it was,

:04:11. > :04:13.here in Mansfield the money would be spent in for a local

:04:14. > :04:15.economy and that is very important for Mansfield.

:04:16. > :04:18.200,000 former miners and windows are affected by the surplus showing.

:04:19. > :04:23.Today 30,000 people signed it petition calling for at least

:04:24. > :04:24.an 85-15 split in favour of the miners.

:04:25. > :04:34.Quentin Rayner, BBC East Midlands Today, Mansfield.

:04:35. > :04:36.Well, next month a group of coalfield MPs will be meeting

:04:37. > :04:38.Trustees of the pension scheme at Parliament.

:04:39. > :04:40.Among them Ashfield MP Gloria de Piero.

:04:41. > :04:42.She told Quentin Rayner why she thinks the scheme

:04:43. > :04:49.When the scheme was set up, the reality is that nobody

:04:50. > :04:51.anticipated that it would become a multi-billion pound cash

:04:52. > :05:05.It was set up to benefit the miners, obviously.

:05:06. > :05:08.So that 50-50 split which may have been plucked out of the air,

:05:09. > :05:11.but seemed clear at the time, actually has not stood the test

:05:12. > :05:15.To enter into renegotiations with the representatives

:05:16. > :05:18.at the Trustees of the pension scheme and mine workers union,

:05:19. > :05:20.to see if there can be a there a settlement.

:05:21. > :05:22.A very simple ask, enter into negotiations.

:05:23. > :05:25.Now, we have a meeting with the trustees of the miners

:05:26. > :05:32.With coalfield MPs, representatives of the NUM,

:05:33. > :05:35.What sort of settlement are you looking for?

:05:36. > :05:38.I'm not going to pluck a figure at the air.

:05:39. > :05:40.It is clearly unfair at the moment that 50-50 share isn't working

:05:41. > :05:46.And so that split, that 50-50 split needs to be reviewed.

:05:47. > :05:52.Miners, ex-miners and their widows must get a decent share.

:05:53. > :05:57.They say they have invested in a way that has generated surplus,

:05:58. > :06:13.But the reality is that the kind of surplus that this

:06:14. > :06:14.scheme has generated, nobody anticipated that sort

:06:15. > :06:19.of billion pounds of cash that has been going into the scheme.

:06:20. > :06:21.A fairer distribution of that will benefit the miners,

:06:22. > :06:24.and their widows, so they can get a decent pension.

:06:25. > :06:27.The Prime Minister was in the region today.

:06:28. > :06:31.Theresa May was making the Conservative case

:06:32. > :06:34.for the forthcoming local elections - with the East Midlands likely

:06:35. > :06:41.Her visit follows Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's earlier in the week.

:06:42. > :06:49.Our political editor Tony Roe went to see what Mrs May had to say

:06:50. > :06:51.This is the day a Conservative Prime Minister came

:06:52. > :06:55.Calverton closed in 1999 but it is now the kind

:06:56. > :07:01.of community the Conservatives want to try to win over.

:07:02. > :07:06.They say they are the party for the ordinary working people.

:07:07. > :07:08.The Prime Minister was in Nottinghamshire to launch

:07:09. > :07:11.the Tories' local election campaign, 48 hours on from the Labour

:07:12. > :07:17.East Midlands MPs, council election candidates and supporters were here.

:07:18. > :07:20.There is only one party in our country today which has

:07:21. > :07:29.The Conservative slogan is a Plan for Britain.

:07:30. > :07:32.She admitted councils have, in recent years, had to cut costs.

:07:33. > :07:43.After the speech, a brief chance to question.

:07:44. > :07:49.For better quality of life. That's our message. Let's get out to beer

:07:50. > :07:52.Let's get out to beer and deliver it.

:07:53. > :07:54.After the speech, a brief chance to question.

:07:55. > :07:59.A question raised by Jeremy in Newark.

:08:00. > :08:06.How'd you answer Mr Corbyn's claims that 40% cuts to local Government

:08:07. > :08:09.funding is the reason council tax bills are going up in both Labour

:08:10. > :08:13.And that you are running the country down?

:08:14. > :08:17.First of all, let's be clear, local councils have had

:08:18. > :08:23.to play their part, as I said, in dealing with Labour's deficit.

:08:24. > :08:27.The Conservatives were clearly staking their claim to win voters

:08:28. > :08:29.in former industrial areas, trying to capture the centre

:08:30. > :08:38.Millions of pounds is being made available to improve

:08:39. > :08:44.The cash will be for schemes to tackle congestion

:08:45. > :08:50.County councils have to bid for the money from the National

:08:51. > :08:52.Productivity Investment Fund which aims to improve

:08:53. > :08:59.local economies by enhancing transport links.

:09:00. > :09:01.And finally, East Midlands Ambulance Service says requests to help

:09:02. > :09:11.with pets were among the more bizarre nine nine nine calls it

:09:12. > :09:15.Users of the service asked for help to treat a sick cat,

:09:16. > :09:18.advice on dandruff and for a lift home from someone who'd been

:09:19. > :09:20.kicked out of a nightclub and had no cash left.

:09:21. > :09:23.EMAS says it wants to remind people ambulances are only

:09:24. > :09:30.So, it's goodbye from me, but with a look ahead to the weather

:09:31. > :09:32.for tomorrow and the weekend, Here's Lucy.

:09:33. > :09:36.Warming up as we move through the weekend.

:09:37. > :09:43.By the time we get to Sunday, we've got high pressure

:09:44. > :09:48.It starts to make its way towards the east.

:09:49. > :09:55.More southerly, and we draw in warmer air from the south.

:09:56. > :09:58.Add in the sunshine and we started to see temperatures creeping

:09:59. > :10:05.Through tonight, variable amounts of cloud, most of us staying dry.

:10:06. > :10:09.Clear spells, also temperatures falling away.

:10:10. > :10:18.The potential for one or two patches of mist developing.

:10:19. > :10:22.It could be slightly cooler in rural parts.

:10:23. > :10:25.Now, as we move into tomorrow, a dry start, a little bit more
