:00:00. > :00:00.Syria? And we speak to Howard Jakonson on his novel about Donald
:00:00. > :00:14.Trump. Here on BBC One, it's time for
:00:15. > :00:16.And now the news for the East Midlands,
:00:17. > :00:20.I'm Anne Davies, good evening. First tonight, a judge has taken
:00:21. > :00:23.the unusual step of making public the details of a custody battle
:00:24. > :00:25.which prompted a mother from Nottinghamshire and her two
:00:26. > :00:29.Samantha Baldwin and her boys were finally found last week
:00:30. > :00:34.Today, a judge said that serious accusations she made
:00:35. > :00:38.Our reporter Victoria Hicks has been following this story.
:00:39. > :00:48.Judge Jeremy Lea said people needed to know some essential facts.
:00:49. > :00:49.Because there's been so much "ill-informed
:00:50. > :00:55.You'll remember that Samantha Baldwin was arrested,
:00:56. > :00:57.at the end of last week, on suspicion of
:00:58. > :01:03.That's after the police found them in a holiday cabin,
:01:04. > :01:06.And it all followed a nationwide "missing persons" hunt,
:01:07. > :01:13.Now today the judge revealed that it started, when Samantha Baldwin
:01:14. > :01:18.That was while he was making a ruling on what contact
:01:19. > :01:22.And he said she took the boys away, to prevent the court from deciding
:01:23. > :01:36.So what did the judge say about those abuse allegations?
:01:37. > :01:38.In a nutshell, his judgement made it clear Samantha Baldwin's claims
:01:39. > :01:41.And his Honour Judge Lea spelled it out.
:01:42. > :01:43.He said "the father had not perpetrated sexual,
:01:44. > :01:45.physical or emotional abuse against the boys, as
:01:46. > :01:50.He said "the allegations made by the mother were false".
:01:51. > :01:52.Samantha Baldwin "genuinely believed he had done it,
:01:53. > :01:58.And the judge added that "in order to try to prove her case",
:01:59. > :02:00.she "caused the boys to ingest substances".
:02:01. > :02:03.Two sedatives that would give rise to a positive drugs test.
:02:04. > :02:06.In short, the judge said she was trying to obstruct
:02:07. > :02:15.And he said the two boys are now in the care of the local council.
:02:16. > :02:18.Next tonight, the fight is on to try to stop two major
:02:19. > :02:20.High Street banks from shutting down branches across our region.
:02:21. > :02:23.NatWest and Lloyds both say the growing popularity of online
:02:24. > :02:26.But campaigners fear the impact of any closure will be
:02:27. > :02:34.felt far more widely, as James Roberson reports.
:02:35. > :02:36.It's been there for decades but now it's shutting.
:02:37. > :02:39.The NatWest branch in Mickleover in Derby is a victim of changing
:02:40. > :02:46.15 branches of NatWest and of Lloyds are due to close
:02:47. > :03:01.Matthew Holmes is one of three local councillors who have signed a
:03:02. > :03:03.petition to stop the closing. We want to send the message to them
:03:04. > :03:07.to pause and think again about this. I don't think they consider
:03:08. > :03:10.what the effect is on a local There is still another bank
:03:11. > :03:22.and aPost Office here but this storeowner says she has seen
:03:23. > :03:25.another branch close. I am surprised they are closing
:03:26. > :03:29.because they have just lift which would have
:03:30. > :03:32.been very expensive. Are you worried
:03:33. > :03:34.that is closing down? The post office will handle a lot
:03:35. > :03:39.of transactions and I will have It is not good for the village
:03:40. > :03:47.and people's access. NatWest say they have listened
:03:48. > :03:50.to local communities and extended the time between announcing branch
:03:51. > :03:53.closures and actually shutting to six months, to give people time
:03:54. > :03:58.to find alternative banking. This is to give people time to find
:03:59. > :04:03.alternative banking. Meanwhile, in Nottingham,
:04:04. > :04:05.Lloyds say they've made a difficult decision to close its branch
:04:06. > :04:08.in old Market Square They say it's because of
:04:09. > :04:11.the changing way that customers bank with them and that this branch
:04:12. > :04:16.is being used much less. The savings made in this closure
:04:17. > :04:21.is going into developing The new ways many individuals and
:04:22. > :04:29.as online, telephone banking. The new ways many individuals and
:04:30. > :04:31.businesses are starting to use. In rural Derbyshire,
:04:32. > :04:33.Lloyds say they are investing in new bank vans so that people
:04:34. > :04:35.still have a bank Student rowers in Leicester fed up
:04:36. > :04:39.with debris being dumped along their stretch of river
:04:40. > :04:41.have decided to deal The watery waste littering
:04:42. > :04:45.the River Soar risks damaging their boats
:04:46. > :04:46.and compromising their training. So Jo Healey has been to meet
:04:47. > :05:04.the rowers to see what they've They are fishing out the mess again
:05:05. > :05:09.and there is plenty of it in the water and out of it. The other day
:05:10. > :05:15.we had a couple of hours out on the river bank and we managed to collect
:05:16. > :05:22.about 26 bikes. There is absolutely loads of letter. Swift boats costing
:05:23. > :05:27.around ?3000 a piece any damage is costly in time and money. If the
:05:28. > :05:33.letter gets into the money it is not good for the birds or boats. We can
:05:34. > :05:35.definitely hit orders on bottles and traffic cones and things like that.
:05:36. > :05:39.And it isn't unusual to promote And it isn't unusual to promote
:05:40. > :05:45.things like this. These really cause quite a lot of damage to the boats
:05:46. > :05:50.so we make it a priority to get them out of the dinner. You don't get
:05:51. > :05:57.many motorbike six not as much as the pushbikes and trolleys. How much
:05:58. > :06:01.damage do these cause? Quite a lot of the time they are low-down but
:06:02. > :06:04.eventually you have handled this sticking up which can cause quite a
:06:05. > :06:10.lot of damage so try to get these out! It is about getting it all out
:06:11. > :06:21.but they also want to give something back and they have made the pledge
:06:22. > :06:27.to dredge every month from now on. You are from the canal and River
:06:28. > :06:35.trust. Just how damaging is all this and other rivers? We spend over ?1
:06:36. > :06:38.million of hard earned cash and lots of volunteer hours in clearing this
:06:39. > :06:43.rubbish out of the waterways. It can get in the way of boats and repair
:06:44. > :06:46.work and can be very harmful to wildlife. How would you like to
:06:47. > :06:49.raise your family and what essentially is a rubbish tip? We
:06:50. > :06:53.have seen the volunteers picking the have seen the volunteers picking the
:06:54. > :06:57.rubbish out and I know you rely on them. Shouldn't we be educating
:06:58. > :07:02.people not to throw stuff into the waterways? Absolutely, it is all
:07:03. > :07:05.stuff people are throwing in and if people weren't throwing it we
:07:06. > :07:10.cleaning it up and it seems some cleaning it up and it seems some
:07:11. > :07:14.people just don't care. The government has announced it has
:07:15. > :07:20.plans to get much tougher on litter louts. Do you think this will have
:07:21. > :07:24.any effect? I think it'll be helpful in raising awareness but in terms of
:07:25. > :07:29.actually starting it it will depend on how much enforcement is actually
:07:30. > :07:35.done. Perhaps just getting people to understand that what they are doing
:07:36. > :07:38.is bad and causing problems. Everyone could come and volunteer
:07:39. > :07:45.away. If you have a crystal ball, is away. If you have a crystal ball, is
:07:46. > :07:49.the future of waterways good? Definitely and we have more people
:07:50. > :07:53.visiting and using the waterways than ever before and we are
:07:54. > :07:54.committed to tackling these kinds of problems and making them even better
:07:55. > :07:55.yet. We'll find out in a moment
:07:56. > :07:58.whether today's glorious weather And it's the dry, sunny conditions
:07:59. > :08:02.which may be putting some of our East Midlands
:08:03. > :08:03.countryside at risk. We're being asked to be careful not
:08:04. > :08:06.to accidentally start fires when out and about -
:08:07. > :08:09.such as this one which destroyed an area of bracken in
:08:10. > :08:22.Leicestershire's Bradgate Park The advice I give to visitors is
:08:23. > :08:27.just please be very careful with your activities, watch the cigarette
:08:28. > :08:30.ends and don't chuck glass bottles around and there a reason we don't
:08:31. > :08:31.allow barbecues in the park, and this is it.
:08:32. > :08:34.And it's not just in rural Leicestershire where there's concern
:08:35. > :08:43.Clearly we have some areas in the county of outstanding natural
:08:44. > :08:46.beauty. They have taken thousands of years to become established and will
:08:47. > :08:52.be destroyed very quickly. What I would say to the public is just be
:08:53. > :08:56.careful when you're out there particularly if you're using
:08:57. > :09:01.barbecues. It might lead to an accidental fire. These fires can
:09:02. > :09:05.grow very quickly and soon get out of hand and take considerable
:09:06. > :09:07.resources to extinguish, and while we do that it causes a tremendous
:09:08. > :09:08.amount of damage. So, it's goodbye from me -
:09:09. > :09:19.but with your weather The week ahead is looking fairly
:09:20. > :09:24.settled but for a week in spring not looking too bad at all. Feeling
:09:25. > :09:30.noticeably cooler but we are expecting some sunshine and
:09:31. > :09:34.occasional showers in the Macs. The high-pressure giving us some fine
:09:35. > :09:39.weather is starting to lose its grip on the weather over the next week or
:09:40. > :09:42.so. We have this cold front moving in our direction bringing sports and
:09:43. > :09:47.spots of rain over the next few days. As for tonight, variable
:09:48. > :09:51.amounts of clouds and the temperature taking a bit of a
:09:52. > :09:55.tumble, lows of around six Celsius, and through the course of the day
:09:56. > :09:59.tomorrow, eight very similar picture, starting on a sunny note
:10:00. > :10:04.and the cloud starts to increase. Highs of around 14 Celsius but
:10:05. > :10:11.tomorrow even in the cloud will start to melt away again. Again,
:10:12. > :10:16.more cloud around on Tuesday night, and under clear skies could fall
:10:17. > :10:22.away Tim Butcher Wise, lows of around eight Celsius and the chance
:10:23. > :10:26.of an odd shower you that they are. Towards the midweek, the cold front
:10:27. > :10:29.comes into play and we may see some rain starting to push Southworth,
:10:30. > :10:35.shouldn't be too heavy but stay tuned to see how that develops,
:10:36. > :10:40.highs of around 13. So as we head to the midweek and on words to Easter
:10:41. > :10:46.we start to get more fronts coming in our direction and again we may
:10:47. > :10:51.see some more showers, so as we look ahead towards Thursday, we've got
:10:52. > :10:57.more cloud starting to build into the picture and a slightly more dull
:10:58. > :11:01.day, highs of around 11 and then finally, towards Good Friday, yet
:11:02. > :11:03.again a springtime mix of sunshine and showers. I will leave you with
:11:04. > :11:05.the Outlook. will have to keep an eye on the
:11:06. > :11:16.National forecast with Matt Taylor. Good evening. Let's cut to the chase
:11:17. > :11:20.the first big holiday weekend of the year is on the horizon and if you
:11:21. > :11:25.consider last weekend as a taster for the summer, this weekend is not
:11:26. > :11:28.looking too bad. It will be a bit cooler, temperatures this week and
:11:29. > :11:31.closer to where they should be at this time of the year thanks to the
:11:32. > :11:37.north-west breed and the reason for that, if we look at the jet stream,
:11:38. > :11:42.coming across the Atlantic pushing from north to south -- north-west
:11:43. > :11:47.breeze. It separates the high pressure and low price and it allows
:11:48. > :11:51.the northerly airflow to develop. It means there will be some showers
:11:52. > :11:54.going into Easter weekend but they will only be a small portion of the
:11:55. > :11:58.weekend wherever you are and there will be some dry weather and when
:11:59. > :12:03.the sun is out, it is getting stronger so it will negate some of
:12:04. > :12:04.the chill. Without the sunshine it will be chilly
