:00:15. > :00:16.And now the news for the East Midlands.

:00:17. > :00:21.First tonight, the snap election on June the 8th will throw

:00:22. > :00:23.the spotlight onto the East Midlands once again as a key

:00:24. > :00:27.In a moment, I'll be talking to our reporter Navtej Johal,

:00:28. > :00:29.who's been getting reaction in our most marginal seat.

:00:30. > :00:32.But first, this is how the political map looks now -

:00:33. > :00:33.Two years ago, the Conservatives took 18

:00:34. > :00:36.parts of the countryside, while Labour's power lies

:00:37. > :00:39.in the cities and former mining areas, with 14 MPs.

:00:40. > :00:50.The Lib-Dems failed to make an impression.

:00:51. > :00:52.On the streets of Nottingham and Leicester today,

:00:53. > :00:55.people gave their reaction to the unexpected election news.

:00:56. > :01:02.Well, I think it's about time we had one.

:01:03. > :01:07.I didn't think there would be one so soon.

:01:08. > :01:09.I just read one headline that said, a snap annihilation

:01:10. > :01:12.That's probably what they're going with.

:01:13. > :01:18.One vote is one vote and to go through it all again

:01:19. > :01:20.is going to confuse people, so I think it shouldn't

:01:21. > :01:25.Everybody in their lives, they need change.

:01:26. > :01:31.I don't think it was the right action.

:01:32. > :01:51.Unless she felt as a leader but she didn't actually have the support

:01:52. > :01:52.from the country that she felt that she had to do that.

:01:53. > :01:56.I've only just seen it on the train so it's a bit of a shock.

:01:57. > :02:02.I thought she was only here for the long haul to get Brexit over and

:02:03. > :02:05.Anyone that was leading anything, a business or a country,

:02:06. > :02:08.would want to have a mandate and I think that's

:02:09. > :02:10.Well, she wasn't really elected, was she?

:02:11. > :02:14.She was put in there, so this will show how popular she is.

:02:15. > :02:19.I voted for Brexit and I will vote again.

:02:20. > :02:25.I think it's a really good tactic and it's a guaranteed win, isn't it?

:02:26. > :02:27.The Prime Minister's announcement seems to have caught

:02:28. > :02:34.After she repeatedly said it was not an option,

:02:35. > :02:36.she's changed her mind and it is now happening.

:02:37. > :02:39.Navtej Johal has been looking at the reaction of some

:02:40. > :02:42.of our MPs and you've also been to the most marginal

:02:43. > :02:46.Derby North was not only the most marginal seat

:02:47. > :02:47.in the East Midlands, but the most marginal

:02:48. > :02:51.Two years ago, the Conservatives' Amanda Solloway beat the Labour

:02:52. > :02:54.incumbent Chris Williamson by just 41 votes -

:02:55. > :02:56.it was so tightly contested that it took three

:02:57. > :03:05.I went to two very different parts of her constituency to see how

:03:06. > :03:07.people would be voting this time round.

:03:08. > :03:09.Whoever puts forward remain, I'll be voting for them.

:03:10. > :03:11.So Brexit has affected the way you would vote?

:03:12. > :03:16.Well, I'm a Labour voter, but I quite like Theresa May.

:03:17. > :03:21.I probably used to vote Conservative, but now I'd

:03:22. > :03:33.It's just a lifelong, family tradition.

:03:34. > :03:35.I normally vote Conservative and I'll

:03:36. > :03:41.I'm one of those that I'll have to do my

:03:42. > :03:47.Well, Amanda Solloway was in London at a photo call for the marathon

:03:48. > :03:54.earlier today when she heard the news about the election.

:03:55. > :03:57.Well, I hadn't expected it this morning, I have to say.

:03:58. > :03:59.And then, now that I'm hearing about this

:04:00. > :04:01.general election, I can really understand why it's happening.

:04:02. > :04:04.At the moment, economically, the country is doing great.

:04:05. > :04:06.There are lots of good things happening in education.

:04:07. > :04:08.One of the things that I am really driving is

:04:09. > :04:13.And I feel that we are doing more now than we ever have done.

:04:14. > :04:16.So I actually feel that there is a lot is being done by the

:04:17. > :04:19.Government and I am very, very hopeful that we will increase our

:04:20. > :04:22.My majority in my constituency is 41.

:04:23. > :04:26.I've always had a really simple philosophy that all I

:04:27. > :04:31.And I thought it was going to be five years, now two so far.

:04:32. > :04:40.And we will now find out on June 8th whether I have done enough

:04:41. > :04:44.And any reactions from some of our other MPs?

:04:45. > :04:46.Well, it's certainly come as a surprise and

:04:47. > :04:50.On social media, Anna Soubry the Broxtowe Conservative called

:04:51. > :04:53.the Prime Minister's decision brave and principled.

:04:54. > :04:56.And she said winning the General election would give the PM a mandate

:04:57. > :04:57.she needs for the Brexit negotiations.

:04:58. > :05:00.On the other hand, Lilian Greenwood called it a chance to,

:05:01. > :05:03.quote, "Kick out this lousy Tory Government."

:05:04. > :05:06."Bring it on," says the Labour MP for Nottingham South.

:05:07. > :05:08.And Jon Ashworth, the Shadow Health Secretary

:05:09. > :05:12.a text which indicates that Labour want to campaign on far more

:05:13. > :05:14.than Brexit - the NHS, providing every child with the very

:05:15. > :05:21.best education, and building the economy.

:05:22. > :05:23.There's uncertainty over which of our MPs will decide

:05:24. > :05:29.There's much interest in Rushcliffe's Ken Clarke,

:05:30. > :05:35.He said he'd stand down in 2020, but the election has come

:05:36. > :05:37.early and the Rushcliffe seat survives being carved up

:05:38. > :05:45.in proposed boundary changes, which won't now go ahead.

:05:46. > :05:48.We'll be hearing from more candidates in the coming days

:05:49. > :05:51.and weeks, but if it passes the vote in the House of Commons tomorrow,

:05:52. > :05:54.the election will be just seven weeks away.

:05:55. > :05:59.A Derby man has admitted seven sex offences, including

:06:00. > :06:02.Ilija High from Chaddesden pleaded guilty to attacking three

:06:03. > :06:04.women in Spondon and Darley Abbey, between September 2014

:06:05. > :06:08.The 23-year-old will be back in front of the Crown Court again

:06:09. > :06:16.in June and has been told to expect a significant sentence.

:06:17. > :06:18.A Nottinghamshire family have been speaking about their escape

:06:19. > :06:22.Two crews were called to the blaze in Eastwood

:06:23. > :06:24.Everyone in the property managed to escape,

:06:25. > :06:27.but the house is un-inhabitable, because of smoke damage.

:06:28. > :06:37.The Fire Service believes it began with an electrical fault.

:06:38. > :06:41.I was just watching telly with my kids and we started to smell

:06:42. > :06:58.I just saw it sparking and popping and I just got the kids out and ran

:06:59. > :07:03.them up to my friend's house and I came back and it was ablaze.

:07:04. > :07:06.Onto football and Leicester City's dream of making the Champions League

:07:07. > :07:11.They drew 1-1 with Athletico Madrid at the King Power Stadium.

:07:12. > :07:27.Over now to Colin Hazelden at the King Power Stadium.

:07:28. > :07:33.Heroine failure. All is likely. No one here at Leicester was going to

:07:34. > :07:39.leave wondering what might have happened had they given a little bit

:07:40. > :07:42.more. The staff, the fans in the stand, all with their game. The

:07:43. > :07:47.players around themselves absolutely ragged. It didn't work. There were

:07:48. > :07:49.very nearly turned into a very very nearly turned into a very

:07:50. > :07:51.very nearly turned into a very special night.

:07:52. > :07:54.Leicester were putting on a show, whether this

:07:55. > :07:57.was to be the end of their European journey or not.

:07:58. > :07:59.They needed at least two goals and were looking the more

:08:00. > :08:03.But Atletico had been in two of the last three Champions

:08:04. > :08:06.League finals and they found a killer goal of simplistic quality.

:08:07. > :08:08.With Europe's away goals rule, it meant Leicester needed to score

:08:09. > :08:10.three times in an hour to make the semifinals,

:08:11. > :08:13.Leicester made half-time changes for one final fling,

:08:14. > :08:17.One of the subs, Ben Chilwell, with the ball across, Vardy,

:08:18. > :08:21.Two needed in 30 minutes, Leicester were racking up

:08:22. > :08:33.the attempts on goal and coming close.

:08:34. > :08:35.Their football was no direct, but it had the

:08:36. > :08:40.And the European tour was finally over.

:08:41. > :08:42.The last English team in the competition went out fighting

:08:43. > :08:45.to the end and Atletico Madrid were relieved to stay in.

:08:46. > :08:47.The fans remained behind, savouring every

:08:48. > :09:07.Not knowing when or if they will be back in it.

:09:08. > :09:15.It is the end and it's the end not just of the Champions League, but

:09:16. > :09:18.what has been an absolutely wild to your right. Encompassing the great

:09:19. > :09:22.escape and of course that Premier League title. The question for

:09:23. > :09:27.everyone here is, what on earth happens next to this club? Standard

:09:28. > :09:31.football rules the go back to being just another side in mid-table, but

:09:32. > :09:36.for many years, standard football rules have not applied here. They

:09:37. > :09:38.certainly haven't, Colin. Thank you very much indeed.

:09:39. > :09:46.As we go through the next few with your weather now, here's Alex.

:09:47. > :09:50.As we go through the next few days, we have a settled spell of weather

:09:51. > :09:53.ahead. This was the picture area on today. Blue skies across much of the

:09:54. > :10:01.region. Thank you to our weather watchers for sending in those

:10:02. > :10:03.pictures. As we have a look at the track high pressure is not going

:10:04. > :10:09.anywhere any time soon. We're sticking with settled conditions. A

:10:10. > :10:15.few week weather funds coming in our direction in places, so we may see a

:10:16. > :10:18.little bit of patchy rain. Overnight tonight, clear spells to begin with

:10:19. > :10:25.and that means the temperatures falling away. In towns and cities,

:10:26. > :10:31.we may seize temperatures around three or four Celsius. It may drop

:10:32. > :10:35.below freezing in the countryside. As we go through tomorrow morning,

:10:36. > :10:39.we will start off on a bright note, but then it will turn his air over

:10:40. > :10:44.the course of the day, with thick clouds starting to move down from

:10:45. > :10:50.the north. The odd shower here and there. As we have a look ahead

:10:51. > :10:54.towards Thursday, more of the same. Variable amounts of cloud,

:10:55. > :10:57.temperatures recovering just a little there. High pressure still in

:10:58. > :11:12.charge towards the end the week, with showers. Here is

:11:13. > :11:18.The weather hasn't been too dramatic of late. That is not say it's not

:11:19. > :11:22.without problems. One of those could occur as early as tonight. There

:11:23. > :11:29.could be a sharp rural frost around especially so in the southern half

:11:30. > :11:33.of the British isles. I make the distinction between south and north,

:11:34. > :11:37.further north we have a weather front, a weak affair from the

:11:38. > :11:41.Atlantic. It has enough breeze and cloud to help to keep the

:11:42. > :11:43.temperatures up relative to the south. Now there
