:00:12. > :00:15.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Geeta Pendse.

:00:16. > :00:18.First tonight, Labour Party officials are drawing up plans

:00:19. > :00:21.to select a new Parliamentary candidate for Nottingham North

:00:22. > :00:24.after Graham Allen's shock announcement that he won't stand

:00:25. > :00:29.He told his local party that ill health was the main

:00:30. > :00:34.Well we'll hear from our General Election reporter

:00:35. > :00:41.But first, he's been looking back on Graham Allen's career.

:00:42. > :00:45.A fresh-faced Graham Allen in his early election campaigning days.

:00:46. > :00:49.The former trade union official has been the area's MP for 30 years.

:00:50. > :00:51.His political legacy will be his approach

:00:52. > :00:54.to the deep-seated social problems of the area, for example the high

:00:55. > :00:59.His thinking to combat intergenerational deprivation -

:01:00. > :01:02.through the so-called Early Intervention Programme -

:01:03. > :01:07.Among political colleagues, there was genuine sadness at his decision

:01:08. > :01:12.All the people, it was so important, all the people said they

:01:13. > :01:14.were really going to miss him, and I think

:01:15. > :01:16.that is something that many

:01:17. > :01:19.politicians cannot say they can hold.

:01:20. > :01:22.Labour has an 11,800 majority in Nottingham North.

:01:23. > :01:25.At the last election, when Ed Millband's Labour Party

:01:26. > :01:28.was losing seats, there was a 5% swing to Graham Allen.

:01:29. > :01:34.We are looking to get a strong Labour candidate to replace me, and

:01:35. > :01:36.that will happen within about three or four days.

:01:37. > :01:40.The question now is whether the voters of Nottingham North will

:01:41. > :01:53.So who will replace Graham Allen as Labour's candidate?

:01:54. > :01:59.It is a good question. We have had a clue what Graham was saying there,

:02:00. > :02:02.he hopes his replacement will be in position to fight this general

:02:03. > :02:06.election in Nottingham North within, in effect by the end of this week.

:02:07. > :02:10.That is a clue to the fact that it might be a strong city councillor, a

:02:11. > :02:16.Nottingham City Council. But there will be huge annoyance and a row if

:02:17. > :02:24.there is any hint that Jeremy Corbyn and Labour Party mangling... Haida

:02:25. > :02:26.parish it in a candidate. It happened with Chris Leslie and that

:02:27. > :02:27.happened in Ashfield, so watch this space.

:02:28. > :02:37.The thing to remember that when Graham won the seat, she won it for

:02:38. > :02:42.the Conservatives in 1987 when Mrs Thatcher was in ten Downing St, and

:02:43. > :02:47.he has turned it in effect to a labour fortress so there is a cute

:02:48. > :02:51.little legacy there. As for Graham himself, I suspect that he will want

:02:52. > :02:55.to swap the green benches for the red benches in the House of Lords

:02:56. > :02:57.arable use the Lauds as an opportunity to promote early

:02:58. > :02:59.intervention and those projects that were so close to his heart.

:03:00. > :03:02.In other news, a Derby man's denied a string of terror offences

:03:03. > :03:04.including planning an attack in the UK.

:03:05. > :03:07.36-year-old Munir Hassan Mohammed was arrested in December

:03:08. > :03:10.after officers searched a house on Leopold Street.

:03:11. > :03:13.Today he appeared at the Old Bailey alongside a co-defendant,

:03:14. > :03:18.Both pleaded not guilty to researching, planning

:03:19. > :03:21.and obtaining materials to produce a bomb or poison.

:03:22. > :03:26.In other news, Nottinghamshire County Council's been fined

:03:27. > :03:29.?1 million pound after a disabled visitor to Rufford County Park

:03:30. > :03:33.was hit by a machine used for collecting branches.

:03:34. > :03:37.The tractor-mounted grabber struck the 71-year-old

:03:38. > :03:41.while he was on a guided tour in 2015, leaving him with injuries

:03:42. > :03:47.The Health and Safety Executive ruled the council failed

:03:48. > :03:50.to adequately plan the work in a public place, putting employees

:03:51. > :03:56.Next, it's a simple bell, but it's ringing in new hope

:03:57. > :04:02.That's because people get to ring it to mark the end of their treatment

:04:03. > :04:07.It's an idea imported from America, and as Victoria Hicks reports,

:04:08. > :04:14.Harris Wagner hopes this is his last visit to the radiotherapy department

:04:15. > :04:20.Today marks his 33rd course of treatment.

:04:21. > :04:25.We sit and talk in the lounge and in the waiting area about,

:04:26. > :04:28.And, how many treatments do you have?

:04:29. > :04:31.And, mine is over next week, and, mine is over today,

:04:32. > :04:34.and everybody looks forward to this day.

:04:35. > :04:36.After being diagnosed with prostate cancer,

:04:37. > :04:40.Harris Wagner had his prostate removed in 2009, but when cancer

:04:41. > :04:45.cells returned, he needed radiotherapy here at the LRI.

:04:46. > :04:49.And now it's his turn to ring the newly installed bell to mark

:04:50. > :04:54.Ring the bell three times and we'll all give a big cheer.

:04:55. > :05:09.And hopefully it's a new life, really.

:05:10. > :05:14.It has had such a positive impact within the department, all the

:05:15. > :05:18.patients have wanted to ring it, because it signifies a real turning

:05:19. > :05:21.point in their life, the end of treatment.

:05:22. > :05:27.It's the focal point of the reception area and people,

:05:28. > :05:31.when they finish their treatment, it's something really special.

:05:32. > :05:34.They cheer and they clap and it's lovely.

:05:35. > :05:39.That's why I'm hoping there's going to be some people

:05:40. > :05:44.People here can't praise the staff enough -

:05:45. > :05:48.this is a happy goodbye - as Harris Wagner leaves feeling

:05:49. > :05:58.Finally, in our increasingly fast-paced world, it seems

:05:59. > :06:02.many of us are turning to life in the slow lane.

:06:03. > :06:04.It's thought there are more boats on our waterways

:06:05. > :06:07.now than at the height of the Industrial Revolution.

:06:08. > :06:09.And where there are boaters, there is business.

:06:10. > :06:11.Amy Harris is in the studio for us tonight.

:06:12. > :06:16.Yes, Geeta, our waterways are going through what's been described

:06:17. > :06:21.In the 20th century, many routes were being closed.

:06:22. > :06:24.Now they are being reopened and regenerated.

:06:25. > :06:27.There are now 33,000 boats on our canals and rivers,

:06:28. > :06:30.more than during the Industrial Revolution.

:06:31. > :06:33.There were 380 million visits to our waterways last year,

:06:34. > :06:38.And boats actually passed through locks nearly four

:06:39. > :06:44.So it's easy to see why our businesses are keen to cash in.

:06:45. > :06:47.Among them is the Mercia Marina in Derbyshire which is seing

:06:48. > :06:55.On a grey Monday morning, it is perhaps understandably quiet at

:06:56. > :07:00.Mercia Marina near Willington, but in fact 800,000 visitors a year

:07:01. > :07:05.flock here, tempted not just by boats but by its restaurants

:07:06. > :07:09.Business is so brisk, they are expanding.

:07:10. > :07:13.We are building a piazza which is a 25,000 square foot

:07:14. > :07:16.building which will have two stories of high-quality offices.

:07:17. > :07:19.It will have six shops and a restaurant.

:07:20. > :07:21.The demand has been extremely strong.

:07:22. > :07:23.We've got some really interesting tenants coming forward.

:07:24. > :07:27.And they are not the only ones making the most of

:07:28. > :07:35.This Nottingham boat company has tripled its profits in a year to

:07:36. > :07:41.?1.5 million through diving in to the high-end market.

:07:42. > :07:44.Back at Mercia Marina, there are grand plans, too.

:07:45. > :07:49.It is already a major tourist attraction, but this ?3 million

:07:50. > :07:52.extension is not the only planned investment.

:07:53. > :07:55.We are a strong believer in the strength of the East Midlands

:07:56. > :07:57.as a whole, and we're happy to invest.

:07:58. > :08:00.We've had huge success so far, and we think we've got a long

:08:01. > :08:03.We are always serving the community and we're

:08:04. > :08:07.We are pretty much part of the community.

:08:08. > :08:11.This expansion is expected to be complete by December,

:08:12. > :08:17.in time for festive visitors, both on and off the boats.

:08:18. > :08:21.The increased popularity of our waterways isn't just benefiting

:08:22. > :08:24.local businesses, but the charity that looks after those rivers

:08:25. > :08:29.For our region, this means that any of the waterways that flow

:08:30. > :08:33.through the towns, cities, villages can bring increased facilities,

:08:34. > :08:38.What we're finding as the charity that looks after the waterways is

:08:39. > :08:42.that more people are aware of our work and are wanting to support it.

:08:43. > :08:44.We have had people running the London Marathon for us last

:08:45. > :08:48.weekend, so it is great as a charity that more people are aware of our

:08:49. > :08:52.work, looking after the waterways, and want to support that.

:08:53. > :08:55.And that of course means our canals are in

:08:56. > :08:57.better shape than ever, handy really as it seems

:08:58. > :08:59.the popularity of this peaceful pastime isn't

:09:00. > :09:13.So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Lucy.

:09:14. > :09:20.Think cycling down, maybe May next week but whatever it is an dropping

:09:21. > :09:23.off as we move through the next few days. Through tomorrow and Wednesday

:09:24. > :09:28.because the temperatures just struggling in the single figures.

:09:29. > :09:32.We'll see some cool night as well, a touch of Frost is likely. There are

:09:33. > :09:35.if you win the showers to look out for. If you get caught in one of

:09:36. > :09:39.those they won't be pleasant, they could contain some hail and snow.

:09:40. > :09:44.And that the nature of shallots, not everybody is seen one. As we move

:09:45. > :09:48.through the day today, we have seen cool air spending in from the north,

:09:49. > :09:53.and that means is removed the next few days it really will be fairly

:09:54. > :09:57.cold. Putting the detail to the map, what a night, plenty of clear skies,

:09:58. > :10:01.they will be a few patches of cloud, 12 showers, they do have the

:10:02. > :10:06.potential to be quite wintry. Many others in a dry and clear night

:10:07. > :10:10.overnight lows between zero and two Celsius in towns and cities, cooler

:10:11. > :10:13.in the countryside. A bit of Frost to start the day tomorrow, but

:10:14. > :10:17.plenty of brightness as we move through the day. Sunny spells,

:10:18. > :10:21.scattered showers, particularly in the afternoon and those showers are

:10:22. > :10:25.the ones that have the potential to be wintry. Activity is reaching a

:10:26. > :10:29.maximum of 10 Celsius, it will also be fairly windy. North-westerly

:10:30. > :10:34.wind. As they moved to Wednesday, a cool start, chance of seeing a touch

:10:35. > :10:38.of Frost, looking largely like Tuesday, sunny spells and scattered

:10:39. > :10:42.showers. Don't take those showers completely leisurely, it you can see

:10:43. > :10:47.one anywhere. Temperatures reaching a maximum of nine Celsius. As we

:10:48. > :10:51.move into Thursday, a warm front coming down from the north, that

:10:52. > :10:55.will bring some cloud and a bit more in the wake of patchy outbreaks of

:10:56. > :10:59.rain. Temperatures slightly recovering as they move through it

:11:00. > :11:02.to Friday. Another largely cloudy day with highs of 11 Celsius. I

:11:03. > :11:03.believe you with some rain. More with the national

:11:04. > :11:12.forecast now. Good evening. It's been turning

:11:13. > :11:15.colder from the north so far today. It's been cold enough for

:11:16. > :11:19.significant snow in northern Scotland. This was mid afternoon.

:11:20. > :11:24.More recently it's been blowing around over the tops of the

:11:25. > :11:29.mountains. Snow in April not necessarily unusual but it's usually

:11:30. > :11:30.unwelcome. The colder air coming in behind the front which
