:00:00. > :00:14.And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:15. > :00:18.First tonight, the underground hunt for gas reserves

:00:19. > :00:21.in the East Midlands took a step forward today as an energy company

:00:22. > :00:24.announced it was going to begin seismic surveys in our region.

:00:25. > :00:29.If they prove successful it could lead to fracking,

:00:30. > :00:32.the use of high pressured liquids to fracture rock to release gas.

:00:33. > :00:35.James Roberson has been to meet the firm and some of the people

:00:36. > :00:39.who could be affected by the process.

:00:40. > :00:41.The former mining village of Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire.

:00:42. > :00:44.The area around the village will be surveyed as well as rural areas

:00:45. > :00:47.to the west round Market Warsop, Shirebrook and Bolsover and then

:00:48. > :00:51.a whole swathe of countryside as far north as South Yorkshire.

:00:52. > :00:54.Indeed, today just into South Yorkshire the fracking company

:00:55. > :01:00.It shows the area and its geology which has already

:01:01. > :01:07.They will use these machines to send sound waves to map the rocks

:01:08. > :01:09.underground and if they then suspect oil or gas is present

:01:10. > :01:14.they will seek planning permission to drill test borings.

:01:15. > :01:16.But the company says it is simply not known yet if they'll

:01:17. > :01:22.We hope we will be back fracking but at this point

:01:23. > :01:25.All we're doing is testing at the moment.

:01:26. > :01:27.So it's possible you might not do any fracking here at all?

:01:28. > :01:32.As I say, we are very hopeful of a shale gas

:01:33. > :01:35.We think it would be a really strong prize for the UK

:01:36. > :01:41.But here in Edwinstowe concerned residents say if the survey does

:01:42. > :01:43.eventually lead to fracking they fear contamination

:01:44. > :01:52.I am concerned because we have the second largest aquifer

:01:53. > :01:55.in the country below our ground and if they drill through and there

:01:56. > :02:00.is any sort of a problem and there is a leakage

:02:01. > :02:09.James, how long will it be before they start surveying

:02:10. > :02:25.It's going to be June probably before they start the survey so it's

:02:26. > :02:29.100 while -- a 100 mile square area. They will zigzag their way down so

:02:30. > :02:34.it will probably be around October before they get to this line. But

:02:35. > :02:39.this is just a survey. Fracking itself could be years away but if

:02:40. > :02:43.fracking does come then the company says it could be a big boost to jobs

:02:44. > :02:45.and income here in this local economy.

:02:46. > :02:48.The public inquiry into child sex abuse has begun its investigation

:02:49. > :02:52.Today, local survivors groups joined more than thirty lawyers

:02:53. > :02:58.Among them was a woman who's told this programme that she reported

:02:59. > :03:02.abuse in children's homes to people "at the highest levels".

:03:03. > :03:08.It just continued despite me reporting it.

:03:09. > :03:13.It went on even after I reported it to the highest level.

:03:14. > :03:17.Very angry. It's always made me angry.

:03:18. > :03:23.Drayton Manor theme park, the scene of a fatal

:03:24. > :03:25.accident on Tuesday, is to remain closed tomorrow

:03:26. > :03:27.to allow the health and safety executive

:03:28. > :03:32.11-year-old Evha Jannath from Leicester died after falling

:03:33. > :03:37.She was on a school trip with the Jameah Girls Academy.

:03:38. > :03:44.The school reopened today and offered extra support to pupils.

:03:45. > :03:47.A radical change to the way care is provided to kidney

:03:48. > :03:49.patients could revolutionise the delivery of dialysis.

:03:50. > :03:52.It used to take two hours for Carl Bicknelll to get

:03:53. > :03:55.to and from hospital but now his life saving

:03:56. > :03:58.treatment is being provided at his local GP's surgery.

:03:59. > :04:01.It's the first in the East Midlands to offer the service.

:04:02. > :04:09.Here's our health correspondent Rob Sissons.

:04:10. > :04:16.The beauty of this surgery is it's just a ten minute try from Carl's

:04:17. > :04:19.home. He used to have to make a two hour round trip three times a week

:04:20. > :04:25.for his four-hour dialysis sessions in Loughborough. It's a huge

:04:26. > :04:34.difference in travel time. Having to go to Loughborough was such a big

:04:35. > :04:37.inconvenience. Carl is a single parent and his six-year-old daughter

:04:38. > :04:43.did the honours today opening the new dialysis service. It means she

:04:44. > :04:48.is seeing more of her dad. When I first met Carl his story was

:04:49. > :04:51.heart-warming and actually the way we normally deliver dialysis for

:04:52. > :04:55.patients in hospital didn't fit round his at all. Most patients

:04:56. > :05:00.still have dialysis hospital. This is Michael. Around 2000 patients in

:05:01. > :05:05.the East Midlands have dialysis this way. The machine does the work of a

:05:06. > :05:10.small kidney removing toxins from the blood. In many ways this is part

:05:11. > :05:15.of a trend. We're seeing things like diabetes clinics will vote into the

:05:16. > :05:21.community into GP surgeries. So although this is a first in the East

:05:22. > :05:24.Midlands more may follow suit. I don't think every practice could

:05:25. > :05:29.offer this but there are plenty of practices which could work on a

:05:30. > :05:37.larger scale that could offer something along these lines. Carl is

:05:38. > :05:40.the first patient to use the facility and they reckon up to 20

:05:41. > :05:47.more people with kidney failure will also use it. The next plan is to get

:05:48. > :05:56.a dialysis machine fitted at home and that will be even better. Peter

:05:57. > :06:03.story is from kidney research UK. This must be good news. Yes, we're

:06:04. > :06:07.really pleased. We think it's great news for kidney patients. We think

:06:08. > :06:15.it's a great innovative way to move the health service forward. We think

:06:16. > :06:20.the most important thing about this is that it is starting to provide a

:06:21. > :06:23.greater element of patient choice and allowing patients to have

:06:24. > :06:29.dialysis in an environment which suits them. This home from home

:06:30. > :06:38.concept. Is this all down to improvements in medical technology?

:06:39. > :06:43.Certainly there is a move towards empowering patients and giving them

:06:44. > :06:46.greater choice. We have been helping that process by working to provide

:06:47. > :06:50.tools to help patients make the right choices about what sort of

:06:51. > :06:57.dialysis who would like and this is an example of great collaboration

:06:58. > :07:06.between GP surgeries and hospitals and indeed the patient groups. Very

:07:07. > :07:09.briefly, are there any other innovations in the pipeline? Yes. In

:07:10. > :07:14.terms of our own work we are looking terms of our own work we are looking

:07:15. > :07:21.and supporting projects to help patients take more of a role in

:07:22. > :07:26.their own care by setting up equipment and taking blood pressure.

:07:27. > :07:30.Thank you very much. One of the proudest

:07:31. > :07:32.moments of my life. That was the reaction of an old

:07:33. > :07:35.soldier who was today presented 99-year-old veteran Don Sutton took

:07:36. > :07:39.part in the liberation of France He already has an impressive

:07:40. > :07:47.collection of medals Today, 99-your-old Don Sutton

:07:48. > :07:54.was awarded another. We would not be in this room

:07:55. > :07:57.if it was not for your He received the highest

:07:58. > :08:02.distinction France can bestow. In a special ceremony

:08:03. > :08:06.at Gedling Civic Centre the French consul to the East Midlands

:08:07. > :08:12.made the presentation. Don, what does this

:08:13. > :08:18.honour mean to you today? It means that France has appreciated

:08:19. > :08:28.what we did for them at the time. I was so proud to serve my own

:08:29. > :08:37.country and help to liberate France. Don, who celebrated his 99th

:08:38. > :08:49.birthday last Friday, volunteered to enter

:08:50. > :08:53.the Army in 1937. He served in the North Somerset

:08:54. > :08:57.Yeomanry and is probably one of the last few who fought

:08:58. > :09:02.on horseback in World War II. Don fought back tears as speakers

:09:03. > :09:05.described how he served across Europe and Africa and how

:09:06. > :09:08.he and his unit were part We would not be here

:09:09. > :09:16.if it was not for the sacrifice This is a thank you,

:09:17. > :09:23.it is a thank you and an expression of gratitude from the French people

:09:24. > :09:26.and all our generations It's been a very emotional

:09:27. > :09:35.day for you, hasn't it? As a 99-year-old I'm not

:09:36. > :09:43.a young chicken any more. That's your news, so

:09:44. > :09:45.it's goodbye from me. But with your weather

:09:46. > :09:55.now, here's Lucy. Finally some rain in our forecast

:09:56. > :10:00.which will be welcome news for those gardeners. They'll also some sunny

:10:01. > :10:04.spells tomorrow but whom it feel to our weather. That is thanks to the

:10:05. > :10:11.year we're dragging up from the south. That will set in. Tonight, it

:10:12. > :10:16.will be fairly cloudy. The odd isolated shower but most of us

:10:17. > :10:23.staying dry. Temperatures falling to an overnight low of 9 degrees.

:10:24. > :10:27.Tomorrow, a fairly cloudy start. A band of patchy rain moving

:10:28. > :10:29.northwards. In the afternoon that cloud beginning to break and some

:10:30. > :10:38.bright intervals and sunny spells but the risk of isolated showers.

:10:39. > :10:45.Temperatures reaching a maximum of 19 Celsius but feeling humid.

:10:46. > :10:49.Saturday will be fairly cloudy and a largely dry day. Some bright

:10:50. > :10:53.intervals here there with temperatures reaching 17 degrees.

:10:54. > :10:57.But this band of rain will introduce a fresher feel to our weather as we

:10:58. > :11:02.move into Sunday. I will leave up with the Outlook.

:11:03. > :11:06.We want to see the economy work for everybody, not

:11:07. > :11:08.Now the weather. , yes a humid dead. We have had

:11:09. > :11:42.photographs of the Now, humid air is coming in hyped.

:11:43. > :11:44.This cloud will be spreading northwards
