0:00:13 > 0:00:15And now the news for the East Midlands,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17I'm Dominic Heale.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Good evening.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21A mass protest has taken place against plans to expand

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Magna Park in Leicestershire.

0:00:23 > 0:00:32Dozens of people staged the demonstration outside

0:00:32 > 0:00:34tonight's planning meeting.

0:00:34 > 0:00:35Harborough District Council is discussing doubling

0:00:35 > 0:00:39the size of the distribution centre near Lutterworth.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42So many people wanted to attend, the authority is holding the meeting

0:00:42 > 0:00:44in a giant aircraft hangar.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48It started at half past six this evening and is STILL going on.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51In a moment we'll talk to our reporter Tim Parker who's there.

0:00:51 > 0:00:58But first Giles Taylor has been looking at the plans.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Along the busy A5 in Leicestershire it

0:01:00 > 0:01:02sits Magna Park.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Already one of the biggest sites of

0:01:05 > 0:01:08its kind in Europe, it is home to some big-name brands like Argos,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09Asda and others.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12It is ideally located to access the M1 and in 69.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15New plans have been submitted for expansion.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Residents are unhappy.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21It will be overbearing on the villages.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25It is going to bring extra traffic at extra

0:01:25 > 0:01:28pollution.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33It is also going to bring jobs that we don't need.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35The proposals are into sections of the northern side.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Builders say if approved, it will bring thousands

0:01:38 > 0:01:40more jobs to the area, but for those living

0:01:40 > 0:01:42in the nearby villages, it is

0:01:42 > 0:01:46a step too far.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Over 80% of people don't live around here who

0:01:48 > 0:01:52work at the Park, because the number of people unemployed is so low.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56We are going to be covered and overrun with warehousing

0:01:56 > 0:02:00and I reckon we are going to have a surplus.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Campaigners have already lost previous battles against expansion,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06and were tonight's plans recommended for approval,

0:02:06 > 0:02:16they fear the result may well be the same.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36That meeting is still going on. It's thought the decision will be made

0:02:36 > 0:02:37this evening.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Well, let's hear join our reporter Tim Parker

0:02:39 > 0:02:41who's at Bruntingthorpe airfield where tonight's

0:02:41 > 0:02:45meeting is being held.

0:02:45 > 0:02:51The meeting continues this evening, over 300 pages in the planning

0:02:51 > 0:02:57document. 30 speakers so far. We've just taken a short break. I have the

0:02:57 > 0:03:02chair of the parish council with me. How do you feel the meeting is going

0:03:02 > 0:03:08so far? You've spoken against the proposals. There is an air of

0:03:08 > 0:03:13anticipation right now. It's all a little bit uncertain, but seemingly

0:03:13 > 0:03:17positive. We've put forward strong arguments from the developers have

0:03:17 > 0:03:21been slightly uncertain of how to respond.Do you feel you can

0:03:21 > 0:03:28convince people here tonight to reject the proposals? They certainly

0:03:28 > 0:03:32have been convincing questions from councillors, digging deeper into

0:03:32 > 0:03:36what can be committed. I think, ultimately, maybe they are afraid of

0:03:36 > 0:03:45the appeal. That's really sad if that is the case.Thank you for

0:03:45 > 0:03:50joining us. I let you get back to the meeting. In a statement the

0:03:50 > 0:03:59developers, says the proposals will deliver a significant number of

0:03:59 > 0:04:07jobs, and that they are listening to the concerns of local residents.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11Two men have been charged with four counts of burglary and one of theft

0:04:11 > 0:04:18following a series of attacks on cash points across the Midlands.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21It follows a police investigation into dozens of attacks on ATM

0:04:21 > 0:04:24machines across the East Midlands.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28Two men arrested in Warwickshire are still in custody.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30The two women were arrested in Lutterworth in Leicestershire.

0:04:30 > 0:04:37They have been released.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Figures out today show a shocking increase in the number

0:04:40 > 0:04:42of people in the East Midlands who died last winter.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44It's thought that was partly because the flu jab failed

0:04:44 > 0:04:46to sufficiently protect the elderly.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48At least 3,000 more people died between December and March

0:04:48 > 0:04:49than in the summer months.

0:04:49 > 0:04:54Most of those deaths were due to respiratory problems.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59Other advice would be around keeping warm, making sure your house is

0:04:59 > 0:05:04heated to at least 18 degrees. Layering up when you go outside.

0:05:04 > 0:05:09Keeping an eye on elderly relatives. Visiting a pharmacist if you feel

0:05:09 > 0:05:20unwell. Bringing the GP if you feel very unwell.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23There has been an angry reaction from the news that Notre Dame will

0:05:23 > 0:05:26be blocked from becoming European capital of culture after the EU

0:05:26 > 0:05:31announced today that Europe to tackle UK cities will no longer be

0:05:31 > 0:05:34able to take part. -- Nottingham will be blocked. Hundreds of

0:05:34 > 0:05:43thousands of pounds has been spent preparing the bed.As this come as a

0:05:43 > 0:05:50shock? It's a big surprise to hear this news. A letter was sent to DCM

0:05:50 > 0:05:58S, the government department dealing with the process. The next 24 hours

0:05:58 > 0:06:04are critical. We've been on the phone today with the DCM S, there is

0:06:04 > 0:06:11a dialogue taking place. We will have more clarity tomorrow.Couldn't

0:06:11 > 0:06:18these difficulties have been foreseen? In 2019 we will be leaving

0:06:18 > 0:06:20the EU? It's always been believed this

0:06:20 > 0:06:25process would continue until Brexit had been concluded. It was assumed

0:06:25 > 0:06:31that it would take place. Really now it is about resolving the situation.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35The government have committed to the five cities that have entered the

0:06:35 > 0:06:39process and said they will support them and help them to realise

0:06:39 > 0:06:44cultural ambitions. Our job now is to represent Nottingham as well as

0:06:44 > 0:06:53we can.You seem to be saying it's not over until it is over. There is

0:06:53 > 0:06:58still an opportunity. The next 24 hours are critical. Beyond that we

0:06:58 > 0:07:03hope our bid, which we think is strong and is being driven by that

0:07:03 > 0:07:06great collaboration across the city, we still want to do something with

0:07:06 > 0:07:14that.Briefly to end, lessons have been learned, progress has been

0:07:14 > 0:07:20made, that won't be wasted? Not at all. We will carry this forward and

0:07:20 > 0:07:22deliver elements of our bid anyway.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24We hear a lot these days about driverless cars.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26But one Nottingham-based company is going a step further

0:07:26 > 0:07:28and developing a flying car.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30At the moment the projected cost is £1.5 million.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33But the vehicles could be in production within just a few years.

0:07:33 > 0:07:39Quentin Rayner reports.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42The idea of a flying car is not as far-fetched as you would think.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Have few years ago James May apply in the Aero car,

0:07:45 > 0:07:48developed in America in the 1940s.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52Petrol powered, its wings folded back when used as a car and it flew

0:07:52 > 0:07:55at 100 mph with a range of 300 miles.

0:07:55 > 0:08:01Absolutely fabulous.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Almost 30 years later, are we about to see the new version

0:08:04 > 0:08:09take-off as a possible idea?

0:08:09 > 0:08:16Those behind it think so.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19This company based in not say they're flying car will be able to

0:08:19 > 0:08:25take off vertically of driveways or even water. Part of the journey

0:08:25 > 0:08:29could be in the air or on road where you have landed. You would have two

0:08:29 > 0:08:34be flown by a pilot, but eventually it could sell half-life. Still

0:08:34 > 0:08:39tempted? Here are some other specifications? It will carry to be

0:08:39 > 0:08:44blunt cruiser 200 mph. It could fly for up to an hour with a range of 75

0:08:44 > 0:08:54miles. It is being developed with the University of Derby. One is £10

0:08:54 > 0:08:58million of investment secured it is held for full-size operation models

0:08:58 > 0:09:07will be certified to fly by 2020. Back in the 1940s the car never

0:09:07 > 0:09:11really took off because of the need for eight separate licences to

0:09:11 > 0:09:15operate it. Maybe now is the time to land this big idea.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17That's your news.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19So, it's goodbye from me but with your weather

0:09:19 > 0:09:23now, here's Anna.

0:09:23 > 0:09:28Thank you, Dominic. It was rather mild earlier in the week, but the

0:09:28 > 0:09:33winds have started to ease and it feels much colder. That is the trend

0:09:33 > 0:09:39over the next few days. Thank you for this photograph. A sunset

0:09:39 > 0:09:46earlier. Keep your pictures coming in. It is becoming increasingly

0:09:46 > 0:09:51cold, they will be plenty of autumn sunshine. It's also going to be

0:09:51 > 0:09:57mostly dry. Dry out there, we've got clear skies that will allow tempted

0:09:57 > 0:10:03to drop away. Winds have eased. Lows of three Celsius, that's towns and

0:10:03 > 0:10:09cities. It will get lower than that in rural areas. Perhaps low enough

0:10:09 > 0:10:14for a touch of frost in sheltered spots. A chilly start to Friday.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19Staying cold throughout the day, plenty of sunshine, it should be dry

0:10:19 > 0:10:27for most of us. One or two isolated she was pushing in from the North

0:10:27 > 0:10:30West. Mostly dry, highs of 7 degrees. It is Friday night that

0:10:30 > 0:10:34will be particularly cold with the risk of a few showers that could

0:10:34 > 0:10:41turn wintry. A cold start on Saturday, widespread frost expected.

0:10:41 > 0:10:47We have this risk of one or two showers and if they do manage to

0:10:47 > 0:10:54make their way towards us, these could be wintry on Saturday. On the

0:10:54 > 0:10:59whole, dry, sunny, but chilly. 5 degrees is the maximum temperature.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Here is your outlook for the next few days.
