0:00:19 > 0:00:20Good afternoon.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23A man's been arrested in Nottingham in connection with the illegal

0:00:23 > 0:00:26storage of waste at an industrial unit that went up in flames.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28The huge fire at Walesby in Nottinghamshire smouldered

0:00:28 > 0:00:33for more than a month and could be seen for miles.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Other storage sites are also being investigated.

0:00:35 > 0:00:44Mike O'Sullivan reports.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Early-morning police officers and the Environment Agency raided a

0:00:51 > 0:00:57a business park at Walesby in Nottinghamshire with thousands of

0:00:57 > 0:01:03tonnes of waste went up in flames. We are not sure what started the

0:01:03 > 0:01:07fire but the operators are going to be left with a massive bill. We have

0:01:07 > 0:01:11been working with the operators to secure appropriate waste disposal

0:01:11 > 0:01:15for the Ashes and any remaining waste. They lost both of their

0:01:23 > 0:01:29Walesby. Mainly plastic waste on fire. Not thought to be started

0:01:29 > 0:01:32deliberately but it smouldered for a month. They are getting the man

0:01:32 > 0:01:37ready to be taken away to the police station after being arrested and

0:01:37 > 0:01:42they say inside they found 41 cannabis plants also. The

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Environment Agency want to question the man over lesser amounts of

0:01:45 > 0:01:51illegally stored waste at an industrial estate in certain

0:01:51 > 0:01:56Bonnington in Nottinghamshire and at a farm in Leicestershire. Raids were

0:01:56 > 0:01:59carried out at two addresses in rather in South Yorkshire. One

0:01:59 > 0:02:06person is understood to be attending a police station manned voluntarily.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Five men have gone on trial in connection with the imprisonment

0:02:09 > 0:02:11and death of a man found in a Leicester car park.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14The body of Promise Ndlovu was found last October.

0:02:18 > 0:02:23Kuldeep Singh, and Kehar Hayer are accused of manslaughter.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25They, and three others are also accused of false

0:02:25 > 0:02:28imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33They deny the charges at Nottingham Crown Court.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36A man's been charged in connection with the stabbing

0:02:36 > 0:02:37of a 19-year-old man in Nottingham.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It happened in the Lenton area last week.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital.

0:02:43 > 0:02:4622-year-old Lea Reece Anderson, of Albert Grove, Nottingham

0:02:46 > 0:02:48is charged with causing grevious bodily harm with intent

0:02:48 > 0:02:52and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55An 18-year-old arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

0:02:55 > 0:02:58remains in police custody.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00There are almost 2,500 homeless people

0:03:00 > 0:03:02in the East Midlands.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04That's according to the housing charity Shelter.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07It's used a number of sources including official rough-sleeping

0:03:07 > 0:03:12and temporary accommodation data to produce the estimated figures.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14The report comes as volunteers in Leicester begin helping

0:03:14 > 0:03:24rough-sleepers on the city's streets as part of a week-long project.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29We are going across the whole city of Leicester trying to find every

0:03:29 > 0:03:32rough sleep out there. We know some of them are visible and sleep in the

0:03:32 > 0:03:37middle of the city but a lot of them are elsewhere. We want to engage

0:03:37 > 0:03:41them, speak to them about what they might want and how they can come off

0:03:41 > 0:03:44the street and get information about them.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46A Syrian refugee has told us she was overwhelmed

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Manal Raweah's one of around 400 Syrians

0:03:50 > 0:03:52who've been resettled, here in the East Midlands.

0:03:52 > 0:04:00Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05At their new home in Gedling, musical reminder of a comfortable

0:04:05 > 0:04:11life that were shattered by war. Manal Raweah's passion is crochet

0:04:11 > 0:04:18and she tries to improve her English to improve her career as a hospital

0:04:18 > 0:04:22life technician. She had to leave a job because of deadly air strikes

0:04:22 > 0:04:31around their apartment in their Syrian city.I was standing in the

0:04:31 > 0:04:37kitchen and all the glass from the window came over me. I told my

0:04:37 > 0:04:43husband we have to leave because it is very dangerous.Their city became

0:04:43 > 0:04:47a front line between rebel fighters and Syrian government forces so they

0:04:47 > 0:04:52headed for the Turkish border. Leaving Syria meant becoming

0:04:52 > 0:04:55refugees and when they applied the resettlement, Britain invited them

0:04:55 > 0:05:00here. This is the moment they boarded the plane for a welcome in

0:05:00 > 0:05:06Nottinghamshire that they'll never forget.My neighbour is very kind

0:05:06 > 0:05:13and lovely. When we came to my house the first time, she gave to me a

0:05:13 > 0:05:21flower. The British people are overwhelming us in kindness. This

0:05:21 > 0:05:25performance was for the charity workers who helped them settle in

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Nottingham, a small way to say thank you.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Next this lunchtime: you know it's the start

0:05:31 > 0:05:33of the festive season when the annual Christmas display

0:05:33 > 0:05:35opens at Chatsworth House.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38This year's theme is a Victorian, Charles Dickens-style Christmas.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Our reporter Carol Hinds is there.

0:05:41 > 0:05:50Carol, how is it looking?

0:05:50 > 0:05:55Yes, it is. I am standing on the grounds of Chatsworth House but this

0:05:55 > 0:06:00morning I have been to the old curiosity shop and it is part of

0:06:00 > 0:06:06this year's theme. With me is Janet, head housekeeper. Tell me about this

0:06:06 > 0:06:14Dickensian Chrisman -- Christmas. Everybody loves the old curiosity

0:06:14 > 0:06:19shop and Scrooge coming good in the Christmas Carol. We have decided

0:06:19 > 0:06:25this is the year to try it out. What were the main challenges in

0:06:25 > 0:06:29decorating the house? The main thing is getting everything in. We have

0:06:29 > 0:06:35five days to install and have huge Christmas trees. Some are 25 foot

0:06:35 > 0:06:42tall. We have a rotating Christmas tree, animations to set up, rigging,

0:06:42 > 0:06:46scaffolding to build and all while the visitors are visiting the house.

0:06:46 > 0:06:53It is the running for longer.Yes, until the 7th of January. We need

0:06:53 > 0:06:58extra in the watering cans.I will bring you more from behind the

0:06:58 > 0:07:02scenes as the staff decking the halls. Join me at 6:30pm this

0:07:02 > 0:07:03evening.

0:07:03 > 0:07:0650 years of BBC local radio has been celebrated today in Leicester.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09In 1967, the city became the first to have its own radio station,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12in what is now a network of 40 up and down the country.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14The anniversary was celebrated this lunchtime by bellringers

0:07:14 > 0:07:16at Leicester cathedral, and is being followed by a party

0:07:16 > 0:07:25for former editors.

0:07:25 > 0:07:32It was all new. There was no book written about how you did it. You

0:07:32 > 0:07:40made it up and did it. Some of what we did was pretty appalling but it

0:07:40 > 0:07:44was locally appalling and some of what we did was really very good and

0:07:44 > 0:07:45inventive and lives on.

0:07:45 > 0:07:52Time for the weather, here's Rich.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Gorgeous blue skies at Chatsworth House. A change from yesterday.
