0:00:12 > 0:00:15With your news now for the East Midlands, I'm Emily Anderson.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16Good evening.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19A man has been charged after a supermarket in Derbyshire

0:00:19 > 0:00:21had to be evacuated.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Police were called to the Tesco in Ilkeston on Friday night

0:00:24 > 0:00:27after reports that a man was holding a knife and threatening

0:00:27 > 0:00:28staff and customers.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30No one was injured during the incident.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35The 48-year-old man has been remanded into custody.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38The number of emergency calls taken by East Midlands Ambulance Service

0:00:38 > 0:00:42over the New Year was up on 2016 and staff have

0:00:42 > 0:00:44continued to be busy today.

0:00:44 > 0:00:54Over 1,100 999 calls were taken in the first

0:01:00 > 0:01:01six hours of New Year's Day.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02-- 2,900 calls.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Crews were called out for alcohol-related incidents, falls,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06people with breathing problems and accidents on the roads.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09For many Christmas and New Year is a time for indulgence,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12but it can also be difficult for those living with very little.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Now a project in Nottinghamshire is hoping to build a network of fresh

0:01:15 > 0:01:17food banks which will educate young people about how they can

0:01:17 > 0:01:18help those in need.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Hannah Meredith reports.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22In the very cold garden at this primary school,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24pupils are working hard on the fruits of their labour.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26We come and grow plants and vegetables.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29We harvest them and send them to the drop-in centre and give

0:01:29 > 0:01:30them to the homeless.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The Food Share Project trains young people to grow food and share

0:01:33 > 0:01:38it with those in need.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40The trouble is that most traditional food banks don't get fresh food,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44so Food Share was setup to address that gap and, at the same time,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46to enable children to really learn and understand

0:01:46 > 0:01:54about complex social issues.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56It is really important that they know that not everyone can

0:01:56 > 0:01:59just nip to Asda and get whatever they want to eat.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04The only good meal they will get is what they have had donated.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07From carrots to cabbage, the children love being part of this

0:02:07 > 0:02:11novel fresh food bank.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16The best thing I have learned is how big rhubarb can get.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19It is really good because we have a home and enough food

0:02:19 > 0:02:20to eat and they haven't.

0:02:20 > 0:02:26It feels really nice because I know that I'm giving

0:02:26 > 0:02:27people meals every day.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30The project has spread to other schools and with the help

0:02:30 > 0:02:32of crowdfunding it is hoped the scheme will grow

0:02:32 > 0:02:33as strong as these seedlings.

0:02:33 > 0:02:38Hannah Meredith, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottinghamshire.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Now, open air swimming may not be your cup of tea on New Year's

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Day, but it's clearly growing in popularity.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Almost 300 people - twice as many as last year -

0:02:46 > 0:02:48took part in the annual dip at an outdoor pool

0:02:48 > 0:02:49in Derbyshire today.

0:02:49 > 0:02:57James Roberson went to meet some of those brave enough to take part!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00You need to plunge in if you are intending to swim at the Lido

0:03:00 > 0:03:03here on New Year's Day.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06For some people the 10 degree water temperature was still too cold,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09despite it being three times warmer than the air.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11This is the fourth year the parish council has opened

0:03:11 > 0:03:14the pool on January the 1st and it is clearly a hit.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17I cannot quite believe how many people we've had

0:03:17 > 0:03:18through the doors already.

0:03:18 > 0:03:23Last year we had 150, and we've already had 80 in 20 minutes.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26If you think that your intrepid reporter is crazy enough

0:03:26 > 0:03:28to get in there with them, then I'm sorry but I'm not

0:03:28 > 0:03:30as intrepid as they are.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32It wasn't my idea, seems ridiculous now.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35My sister wanted to do it and I came with her.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37I guess it is New Year, new you.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39"Come out of the water a new man", she said.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43A terrible idea.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46There are crazy people in bikinis there, oh my gosh!

0:03:46 > 0:03:51It is so cold.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Uou only come for a small amount to times, so I thought it would be

0:03:54 > 0:03:56a great start to the New Year.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59I persuaded my friend to come in as well, but she did two

0:03:59 > 0:04:00lengths and got out.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03With warming beverages on hand, this year's swim attracted 284 people,

0:04:03 > 0:04:04twice last year's total.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06They hope to beat this record next year.

0:04:06 > 0:04:12James Roberson, BBC East Midlands Today, Derbyshire.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14In sport, the Leicester Tigers played high-flying Saracens

0:04:14 > 0:04:16at Welford Road in the Aviva Premiership this afternoon.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19But it was one to forget for the Tigers, I'm afraid.

0:04:19 > 0:04:28It finished Tigers 12, Saracens 16.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Let's take a look at the weather now, here's Alex

0:04:30 > 0:04:34with your forecast.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Good evening and a happy New Year to you.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40We have had our fair share of wet weather

0:04:40 > 0:04:41across the East Midlands today.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45This is the picture in Derbyshire earlier on, thank you to our weather

0:04:45 > 0:04:46watcher for sending that in.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49The front that was bringing the rain is sinking to the south and high

0:04:49 > 0:04:52pressure is building to replace it, so we are expecting some

0:04:52 > 0:04:54more settled weather for the next day or so.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Overnight tonight there are a few showers around in places,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59some of those could be wintry, particularly over higher

0:04:59 > 0:05:00ground and lows tonight of around one degree.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03As we go towards tomorrow morning we had expecting a bright

0:05:03 > 0:05:07but frosty start in places.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Variable amounts of cloud throughout the day, so not quite wall-to-wall

0:05:09 > 0:05:11sunshine but still some decent sunny spells.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Chilly, though, with highs of around 4 degrees.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17I will leave you with the outlook - bright but chilly weather on the way

0:05:17 > 0:05:19for the next couple of days.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23That's all for now.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26We'll be back just before 11pm tonight, until then have a lovely

0:05:26 > 0:05:32evening and Happy New Year!
