:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight on BBC London News... - so it's goodbye from me -

:00:00. > :00:00.The hospital issuing its security staff with body caleras

:00:07. > :00:09.following a dramatic rise in the number of attacks

:00:10. > :00:19.It could be emotionally verx upsetting for them. And it lakes

:00:20. > :00:22.it's very difficult for thel to do their jobs.

:00:23. > :00:25.Guys and St Thomas' hope thd trial will deter violence and agrdssion.

:00:26. > :00:28.The face of one of the most wanted fugitives.

:00:29. > :00:31.The family of the man he's `ccused of killing appeal for help

:00:32. > :00:33.in bringing him back home to face justice.

:00:34. > :00:34.Why former England captain Rio Ferdinand has

:00:35. > :00:40.set his sights on affordable housing.

:00:41. > :00:46.I don't ever want to be known for the rest of my life as just being a

:00:47. > :00:52.footballer. I want something to look back on and for my family to look

:00:53. > :00:56.back on and say that I did something for the community. Two things are

:00:57. > :01:01.going to happen in the next 90 seconds. First, that phone hs going

:01:02. > :01:05.to ring. And bringing Leicester Square to a standstill. We `re on

:01:06. > :01:13.the red carpet with Tom Cruhse at the premiere of his latest lovie.

:01:14. > :01:15.Good evening and welcome to the programmd.

:01:16. > :01:21.One of London's busiest hospitals is giving its security staff

:01:22. > :01:24.body cameras, after a dramatic increase

:01:25. > :01:27.in the number of attacks on nurses and other frontline workers.

:01:28. > :01:29.The trial at Guy's and St Thomas' comes as more than 70

:01:30. > :01:33.people were arrested in the last six months.

:01:34. > :01:35.Some patients were banned from the hospital altogether.

:01:36. > :01:38.It's being supported by the Met who hope the cameras will ddter

:01:39. > :02:02.They are preparing for work. Work at a hospital. So, perhaps this is a

:02:03. > :02:06.sign and sound of the times. From next week, they will be doing this

:02:07. > :02:12.for real. Like London's polhce, they will be putting on body worn

:02:13. > :02:17.cameras. To tackle a growing problem with attacks on staff. The

:02:18. > :02:21.statistics will tell you whx. There were 850 incidents between @pril and

:02:22. > :02:30.September this year. That is up from 620 from the same time in 2015. A

:02:31. > :02:34.rise of 27%. Over the same period, 75 arrests, up from 30 last year. It

:02:35. > :02:41.is hoped the new cameras will help to reassure staff and patients.

:02:42. > :02:45.Hello. Staff can feel intimhdated and very threatened by the

:02:46. > :02:48.individuals involved. And it can be emotionally very upsetting for them

:02:49. > :02:53.and makes it difficult for them to do their job. And also that can

:02:54. > :02:57.affect the patients who also feel intimidated and threatened. Bosses

:02:58. > :03:01.here have already been taking steps to protect staff. 26 patients have

:03:02. > :03:07.been excluded from the hosphtal More than 100 have been issted with

:03:08. > :03:11.behaviour contracts. And thdy say they've spent a long time trying to

:03:12. > :03:18.find the most secure video system possible before launching the

:03:19. > :03:21.scheme. This system is one that loads directly onto a securd server,

:03:22. > :03:26.so the footage cannot be pl`yed around with or deleted. It will go

:03:27. > :03:32.to the server, then we will downloaded onto a disc and provided

:03:33. > :03:35.to the police. So it is sectre in terms of patient confidenti`lity? It

:03:36. > :03:39.is one of the most secure sxstems that we could find. The six, month

:03:40. > :03:43.trial is being backed by thd Met Police, which says hopes will be

:03:44. > :03:45.rolled out across the NHS in London if it is successful.

:03:46. > :03:47.Lots more to come on the programme tonight...

:03:48. > :03:49.The criminal who turned his life around to become

:03:50. > :03:55.Now, he's hoping to run, cycle and swim his way

:03:56. > :04:03.The Old Bailey has heard how a police officer was strangled

:04:04. > :04:06.and his body dismembered, after meeting a man

:04:07. > :04:10.Stefano Brizzi is charged with killing Gordon Semple

:04:11. > :04:12.at his flat in South London in April.

:04:13. > :04:15.A warning - some of the det`ils in this case are disturbing.

:04:16. > :04:26.Let's go live now to our reporter, Richard Lister.

:04:27. > :04:33.Yes, when he opened the prosecution case this morning, he warned the

:04:34. > :04:37.jury that listening to the dvidence would require strong stomachs as

:04:38. > :04:43.well as broad minds. The sulmary of the evidence we have heard so far

:04:44. > :04:47.has been very graphic and gruesome. Stefano Brizzi was originally from

:04:48. > :04:53.Italy and came to the UK in 201 . He is charged with murdering PC Gordon

:04:54. > :04:58.Semple. It Metropolitan Polhce petrol. That was an April the 1st.

:04:59. > :05:02.He is also charged with dislembering his body and concealing it from the

:05:03. > :05:08.coroner. He says what happened was an accident, a result of a drug

:05:09. > :05:12.fuelled sex game gone wrong. And the jury heard both men had extreme

:05:13. > :05:17.sexual preferences and had lade contact via the gay dating `t

:05:18. > :05:24.Grindr. They said PC Semple had gone to his flat and spent much of the

:05:25. > :05:29.afternoon there and at some point was strangled to death. His body was

:05:30. > :05:32.not found for one week. When police officers got to the flat, they

:05:33. > :05:36.banned the horrific scene and Stefano Brizzi met them at the door

:05:37. > :05:41.saying, I have tried to resolve the body. I have killed the polhce

:05:42. > :05:45.officer. Satan told me to. There were emotional scenes in cotrt this

:05:46. > :05:50.afternoon when the jury was shown CCTV footage of Stefano Brizzi in a

:05:51. > :05:53.shop buying power tools, a bucket and cleaning materials. He had to

:05:54. > :05:58.leave court and the session was abandoned for the day. He h`s

:05:59. > :06:02.admitted obstructing the, r`bbi concealing the body. He denhes

:06:03. > :06:07.murder. The case is expected to last three weeks. -- obstructing the

:06:08. > :06:09.coroner. Talk of affordable housing

:06:10. > :06:11.and you don't immediately think But that's exactly what somd

:06:12. > :06:14.former West Ham players The players including ex-England

:06:15. > :06:19.captain Rio Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora,

:06:20. > :06:21.who are planning on building And, with their roots firmlx

:06:22. > :06:24.in London, they've been telling our political editor,

:06:25. > :06:27.Tim Donovan, why they hope one day to bring their scheme

:06:28. > :06:36.to the capital. Take 20 hectares of land ne`r Luton

:06:37. > :06:42.and a former captain of the England football team and what you get?

:06:43. > :06:48.Well, soon possibly homes. But not homes alone. What is missing, he

:06:49. > :06:51.says, his community. A placd to thrive and be sustainable and

:06:52. > :06:56.longevity, it needs a community purpose to it. I think that is why

:06:57. > :06:59.everything we do has to havd a sporting and leisure facility. Also

:07:00. > :07:04.an education part and we want to entice the local businesses to give

:07:05. > :07:11.the people and communities opportunity. I am from Peckham. Not

:07:12. > :07:14.a site often seen. Ex-footb`llers at an international property f`ir. He

:07:15. > :07:20.runs a charitable foundation along with another ex-player. Both of them

:07:21. > :07:23.are brought up on London estates. Now in partnership with devdlopers

:07:24. > :07:30.and backed by pension funds, they want to build 1300 new homes. Half

:07:31. > :07:32.of them are affordable. We want the right community for ourselvds and

:07:33. > :07:41.the right community for the people out there. And if we can do 50%

:07:42. > :07:46.just like Siddique Khan is preaching, that is good. Wh`t are

:07:47. > :07:50.you putting in? We are putthng in time and connections. It is

:07:51. > :07:54.something that when we go to the councils, thankfully, we have the

:07:55. > :07:58.ability to open up doors. Their share of profits will go to the

:07:59. > :08:02.foundation providing the yotth and sports facilities. And their sights

:08:03. > :08:07.are set on London. It is it possible we could see you coming up with

:08:08. > :08:12.plans for London boroughs? Xes. We have been speaking to Barking and

:08:13. > :08:20.Dagenham. They are going very well. Not quick as we would like to. I

:08:21. > :08:23.want to Southwark to have one. Definitely, I will be so

:08:24. > :08:28.disappointed if that didn't happen. The estate I grew up on, thd youth

:08:29. > :08:33.club is being talked about being closed down. There is more politics

:08:34. > :08:37.that goes on in London. But I'm sure, in time, we will get there.

:08:38. > :08:42.And we will be able to change a lot of lives. Still plans to sort out

:08:43. > :08:46.before they can be sure of success in their first appearance in the

:08:47. > :08:50.property game. But could thhs work? Some people will be sceptic`l. The

:08:51. > :08:58.Housing experts will be leave it to the people who know how to do it.

:08:59. > :09:02.You see that, but why is thdre a problem in the housing markdt? Leave

:09:03. > :09:07.it to the professionals. But some people don't do it as well. I don't

:09:08. > :09:10.ever want to be known for the rest of my life is just being a

:09:11. > :09:14.footballer. I want to look back on and my family and friends c`n look

:09:15. > :09:20.back on and see my dad did something for the community. And the longevity

:09:21. > :09:22.and sustainability and he hdlped people. And this is a real good

:09:23. > :09:24.effort of trying to do that. speaking to our

:09:25. > :09:30.political editor, Tim Donov`n. North Greenwich tube

:09:31. > :09:32.station remains shut, after police were called

:09:33. > :09:34.to a suspect package. A controlled detonation was carried

:09:35. > :09:37.out to ensure the item was safe Our Correspondent,

:09:38. > :09:48.Daniel Sandford, joins us. First of all, it is not quite clear

:09:49. > :09:51.whether or not this item was safe. The police were first alertdd at

:09:52. > :09:58.just after 11am this morning. Station staff found it on one of the

:09:59. > :10:03.Jubilee line trains. It esc`lated a bit from there. The British

:10:04. > :10:05.Transport Police and both Metropolitan Police specialhst got

:10:06. > :10:10.involved. There was then a controlled destination on this

:10:11. > :10:14.suspicious object. But that still didn't lead to the station being

:10:15. > :10:17.opened. The counter terrorism command of the Metropolitan Police

:10:18. > :10:24.are now running his investigation. That doesn't mean necessary that was

:10:25. > :10:28.-- it was a explosive devicd. But they aren't sure what it was. In a

:10:29. > :10:32.comeback concert that is gohng on tonight is going ahead. Members of

:10:33. > :10:36.the public are having to cole by different routes to be underground.

:10:37. > :10:38.That is still going ahead is just a couple of hundred meters aw`y.

:10:39. > :10:42.Although there have been suggestions that might open, right now ht

:10:43. > :10:48.remains very much closed. And it is still not clear exactly what it was

:10:49. > :10:50.that was on the tube train that was found at 11am that morning.

:10:51. > :10:52.A woman has been rescued from a third floor balcony

:10:53. > :10:55.and a man taken to hospital, after a fire broke out in

:10:56. > :11:04.Flames spread through part of the building in Notting Hill Gate

:11:05. > :11:06.It's not yet known what caused the fire.

:11:07. > :11:10.This is the face of one of the most wanted fugitives in the country

:11:11. > :11:16.Shane O'Brien is thought to be on the run in Spain,

:11:17. > :11:19.after stabbing to death a m`n in Hillingdon a year ago.

:11:20. > :11:22.He's one of four men from London that the National Crime Agency

:11:23. > :11:28.want returned to the UK to face justice.

:11:29. > :11:40.On display at a summer spent's most popular resorts. The faces of

:11:41. > :11:43.Britain's most wanted fugithves Among them, Shane O'Brien from

:11:44. > :11:47.Ladbroke Grove. He is wanted in the connection of the murder of Josh

:11:48. > :11:51.Hanson. He was stabbed to ddath in an unprovoked attack in a b`r in

:11:52. > :11:55.Hillingdon one year ago. His mother said she cannot grieve until the man

:11:56. > :11:59.suspected of killing her son faces trial. The very beginning, H

:12:00. > :12:05.thought, we have a name and a name and face. This is going to be

:12:06. > :12:10.resolved quite soon. Justicd will be carried out. And this is a xear on

:12:11. > :12:19.and still nothing. It is not right. It is not just. And you feel very

:12:20. > :12:29.scared and vulnerable to thhnk that... This person is out there.

:12:30. > :12:33.The operation gives some hope. Some have been caught over the p`st year

:12:34. > :12:37.in Spain as a result of investigations. Among them, Mark

:12:38. > :12:43.Lilly who was arrested at hhs Spanish villa. He had been wanting

:12:44. > :12:49.for more than a decade. Also caught, Andrew Moran. He had been involved

:12:50. > :12:53.with a ?25,000 armed raid. So, why does the National Crime Agency

:12:54. > :12:58.believe some criminals choose Spain? There is a large expat Brithsh

:12:59. > :13:06.community in Spain. They like to mix with that to evade capture. We now

:13:07. > :13:08.have an extremely good and close partnership with our Spanish

:13:09. > :13:13.counterparts. And we want to make it so that Spain is not a safe haven

:13:14. > :13:17.for these people. There are three other wanted men from London whose

:13:18. > :13:22.names were published on the list today. Jamie a court from south

:13:23. > :13:27.London was one of them. One of the suspected killers of Stephen

:13:28. > :13:34.Lawrence. Matthew Salmon is suspected of making and possessing

:13:35. > :13:38.indecent photographs of children. And another is wanted in connection

:13:39. > :13:41.with fraud by false representation. Although Shane O'Brien has been

:13:42. > :13:46.linked with Spain, he could be elsewhere. And Josh's mum h`s this

:13:47. > :13:51.appeal. The desperation that you feel to put an end to that part of

:13:52. > :13:57.this horrific experience and journey that we will be on for our rest --

:13:58. > :14:02.the rest of our lives withott him. It doesn't matter where you are if

:14:03. > :14:09.you can help us, please do. They hope the Spanish operation will help

:14:10. > :14:12.to bring more of the UK's most wanted to justice at home.

:14:13. > :14:14.Prince Harry joined the Mayor of London

:14:15. > :14:16.and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe

:14:17. > :14:18.this afternoon for a memorial service to honour

:14:19. > :14:21.more than 650 officers, who've died in the line of duty.

:14:22. > :14:23.His Royal Highness also spent time meeting families

:14:24. > :14:26.Sidney Mackay lost his daughter Nina, after she was stabbed

:14:27. > :14:34.while trying to make an arrdst in Stratford almost 20 years ago.

:14:35. > :14:44.Police officers, knowing thdre is still the need to remember that we

:14:45. > :14:49.cannot forget. It is import`nt that the public show their appreciation

:14:50. > :14:51.as well. And I think we see that in the prominent officials that come to

:14:52. > :14:53.events, such as this. An update now on a

:14:54. > :14:55.story we brought you on Monday about a former Met

:14:56. > :14:57.officer who's accused the IPCC, the police watchdog,

:14:58. > :14:59.of treating him unfairly after he tasered an off-dutx

:15:00. > :15:15.black firefighter in 2011. But the IPCC's probe into hhm

:15:16. > :15:17.and two other officers The man tasered was Edric

:15:18. > :15:20.Kennedy-Macfoy, who was latdr found not guilty of obstructing police

:15:21. > :15:22.and resisting arrest. His representatives have told us

:15:23. > :15:24.that, during investigations by both the Met and IPCC,

:15:25. > :15:26.independent witnesses supported The Met then apologised to him

:15:27. > :15:30.and paid substantial damages. They also say that Mr Kennedy-Macfoy

:15:31. > :15:32.has discussed his concerns with senior Met officers

:15:33. > :15:37.and is to help them As was noted on Monday,

:15:38. > :15:44.an independent review of thd IPPC investigation is underway

:15:45. > :16:00.and the outcome is awaited. We got inside the UK's oldest youth

:16:01. > :16:06.club, hoping to stand the tdst of time. And I'm in Leicester Square,

:16:07. > :16:12.where Tom Cruise to meet thdse fine people. And I will be having a word

:16:13. > :16:23.Or find themselves in Belmarsh prison with Abu Hamza

:16:24. > :16:26.But this was the previous lhfe of John McAvoy, who has

:16:27. > :16:28.turned his life around after becoming

:16:29. > :16:34.And he now hopes to become a world champion triathlete.

:16:35. > :16:44.having been born into a lifd of organised crime and not even 30

:16:45. > :16:49.John McEvoy found himself in prison for a second time. But this was

:16:50. > :16:53.Belmarsh high security unit. He has been sentenced to life for

:16:54. > :16:58.conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Looking around, I was like, I

:16:59. > :17:05.recognise these spaces. These guys walking around. Then I realhsed two

:17:06. > :17:10.they were. In their big guys responsible for bombings and Abu

:17:11. > :17:15.Hamza. I didn't want to be `round criminals. He became possessed with

:17:16. > :17:19.working out in his cell, colpleting thousands the day. When he was moved

:17:20. > :17:24.to a category B prison, he turned his focus to the indoor rowhng

:17:25. > :17:28.machine in the prison gym. One day, a prison officer was walking behind

:17:29. > :17:36.me and when I stopped, the lonitor stopped. And he went, my God, that

:17:37. > :17:41.is quick. Then he came with these records. He asked if I could beat

:17:42. > :17:45.them. I said yes. And then H did one after the other. And within a year

:17:46. > :17:50.and a half, I set nearly evdry British record on a rowing lachine.

:17:51. > :17:59.Now a rowing record holder, when he was released he headed for the

:18:00. > :18:05.London rowing club. But he kept his past the boat race, mostly dducated

:18:06. > :18:08.and upper-class people. I w`s paranoid I accepted. I was rowing

:18:09. > :18:13.with a lot of guys from the Met They didn't have a clue that the guy

:18:14. > :18:18.sitting in front of them spdnt ten years in prison. What did they say

:18:19. > :18:21.when they found out? They wdre gobsmacked. Everyone has

:18:22. > :18:28.preconceptions of criminals. They were shocked no one expected it or

:18:29. > :18:31.questioned his past. Everybody thought he was really great for

:18:32. > :18:35.coming out. Performed and accepted, he has released a book about his

:18:36. > :18:41.life and has a new sporting career ahead of him. I want to become a

:18:42. > :18:45.professional triathlete. I want to do iron I want to become successful

:18:46. > :18:51.in sport and give back something through sport. I understand the

:18:52. > :18:53.achieve in sport, the more H can show the impossible

:18:54. > :18:56.Now, in a era of impossible computer games and social media,

:18:57. > :18:58.you may think youth clubs are a thing of the past.

:18:59. > :19:01.But one that's still going strong is St Andrews in Westminster.

:19:02. > :19:03.It's popular with local children and parents

:19:04. > :19:05.And it's celebrating a rather special birthday.

:19:06. > :19:22.launched in 1866 in market Street, Soho, the world's oldest yotth club.

:19:23. > :19:26.Saint Andrews was founded bx the Victorian businessman and

:19:27. > :19:31.philanthropist, George Godolphin. The club moved to Westminstdr in

:19:32. > :19:42.1885. And it became equipped with its own games room and gym. Today

:19:43. > :19:46.the club celebrates its and its current high Street. A Sophos macro

:19:47. > :19:54.throw away from the Houses of Parliament. He was a communhty-based

:19:55. > :19:59.youth Centre, from five to `dult hood. On average, the club sees more

:20:00. > :20:04.than 700 young people through its doors each year. And offers them a

:20:05. > :20:11.safe and active environment. It has become a pillar of the commtnity.

:20:12. > :20:17.Michael has been coming to the club for more than ten years. He now has

:20:18. > :20:20.a job there as a football coach It gave me the opportunity and platform

:20:21. > :20:25.to do this stuff. And it is important, because people lhke me,

:20:26. > :20:28.but have aspirations. I want to be the best football coach in the

:20:29. > :20:36.world. But you cannot just say that. You have to put it into practice.
