:00:15. > :00:18.Southern Rail passengers have been warned that services will be

:00:19. > :00:21."severely disrupted" over the next few days because of a fresh strike

:00:22. > :00:24.by guards and an ongoing overtime ban by drivers.

:00:25. > :00:27.Members of the RMT union will walk out on New Year's

:00:28. > :00:33.Our political Correspondent Karl Mercer reports.

:00:34. > :00:36.Not strike one, not strike two, not even strike three,

:00:37. > :00:42.For months, customers on Southern trains have suffered.

:00:43. > :00:44.Even on days when there haven't been strikes,

:00:45. > :00:51.Now, they face going into the New Year with more of the same.

:00:52. > :00:54.Over the next three days, the RMT union will be on strike.

:00:55. > :00:57.A week later, they'll be joined by drivers from the Aslef union

:00:58. > :01:01.in the long-running row over changes that would see drivers

:01:02. > :01:04.being responsible for shutting the train doors instead of guards.

:01:05. > :01:07.I'm not looking to take any credit or to get a victory.

:01:08. > :01:15.To help the travelling public maintain a safe and secure railway

:01:16. > :01:18.and provide the train company with the benefits of enhanced

:01:19. > :01:24.On the eve of the New Year, I make this challenge to them.

:01:25. > :01:30.Let's forget about the dogma, and let's do this for the public.

:01:31. > :01:32.The company insists it will continue with its plans

:01:33. > :01:39.It, too, says it's willing to talk but once again,

:01:40. > :01:47.It has been a very frustrating number of months and I would

:01:48. > :01:49.like to apologise for the service we've been offering,

:01:50. > :01:52.which of course has not been anything like good enough.

:01:53. > :01:54.We've continued with our plans, we are continuing to roll

:01:55. > :01:56.out our plans and we intend to do that.

:01:57. > :01:58.We feel our plans are very reasonable, they're all

:01:59. > :02:01.about a better service for our customer and are about

:02:02. > :02:03.improved punctuality and more opportunity for our people to work

:02:04. > :02:06.We think it's entirely a good thing we're doing.

:02:07. > :02:09.We think the response of the trade unions have been unreasonable

:02:10. > :02:13.The company is warning it will only run around half of services over

:02:14. > :02:17.The following week, it won't run any if the driver strike goes ahead.

:02:18. > :02:20.A new year perhaps, but the same old problems on Southern.

:02:59. > :03:00.Christmas may be over, but Londoners are being urged

:03:01. > :03:04.The capital currently only recycles around 30% of its rubbish,

:03:05. > :03:17.After the festivities, the clean-up begins across London.

:03:18. > :03:18.Many councils will collect overflowing rubbish for

:03:19. > :03:26.But with a less than sparkling record on

:03:27. > :03:29.recycling, households in the capital are being asked to make it a New

:03:30. > :03:36.It's vital that we up the amount of recycling that we do.

:03:37. > :03:38.We are below the national average in London, 31%,

:03:39. > :03:48.In order to look after our planet, basically.

:03:49. > :03:51.The borough of Surrey Heath recycles more than double the average amount

:03:52. > :04:00.And with so much more waste created during the holidays,

:04:01. > :04:04.it's a chance to reduce the load on Southeast landfill sites.

:04:05. > :04:06.In London, over the Christmas period, we create

:04:07. > :04:09.enough waste to fill Trafalgar Square several times.

:04:10. > :04:14.That includes 38,000 tonnes of Christmas wrapping

:04:15. > :04:18.paper and card and 192,000 real Christmas trees.

:04:19. > :04:19.Some experts blame London's poor attempt at recycling

:04:20. > :04:22.on the capital's growing population and the increasing number of people

:04:23. > :04:28.renting, rather than buying their own homes.

:04:29. > :04:31.But in Ealing, big improvements have been made just by

:04:32. > :04:38.With Londoners doing their bit to make

:04:39. > :04:44.Students at a school in north London have come up with an idea that

:04:45. > :04:47.could raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.

:04:48. > :04:52.The group, from Skinners Academy in Stamford Hill, won a competition

:04:53. > :04:55.Now, their idea is being put into practice,

:04:56. > :05:02.Henrique was born with cystic hygroma and he needed a tracheostomy

:05:03. > :05:07.Henrique's parents didn't know if he would ever talk.

:05:08. > :05:13.But last month, after only a few hours of music therapy classes,

:05:14. > :05:17.Got so chuffed when he first realised that sound

:05:18. > :05:27.He said, "water", "grandma", and "hello".

:05:28. > :05:34.Without fundrising, the charity that helps pay for these

:05:35. > :05:40.And these students in Hackney have come up with a new way of raising

:05:41. > :05:45.iRoundup is a system where pupils can round up every payment

:05:46. > :05:47.for their school lunch, so a small part can be

:05:48. > :05:54.We thought it would be easy to implement into the real world.

:05:55. > :05:56.Their idea won a competition for young entrepreneurs,

:05:57. > :06:01.Now the company that runs school lunch payments,

:06:02. > :06:08.It's very rare that you hear a genuine new idea

:06:09. > :06:13.We've already raised nearly ?10,000 just during this trial period.

:06:14. > :06:15.With a full launch in 2017 we're expecting to raise

:06:16. > :06:21.between ?150,000-?200,000 in the first year.

:06:22. > :06:24.So, what do the students think about their idea of raising money

:06:25. > :06:44.Thanks to the students, small change can make a big difference.

:06:45. > :06:49.And it's been another cold and foggy day, let's have a check

:06:50. > :06:56.Fog has been causing problems through the day-to-day on the roads

:06:57. > :06:58.and flight cancellations and delays at our airports.

:06:59. > :07:01.We still have a Met Office yellow weather warning in force for fog.

:07:02. > :07:04.Visibility down to 100 metres, perhaps less at first tonight.

:07:05. > :07:06.That fog and muggy weather will be widespread with a possibility

:07:07. > :07:11.Through the night, we will probably start to see the worst of conditions

:07:12. > :07:17.It won't be quite as murky as we start off Saturday but some

:07:18. > :07:19.of us will have a frosty start to the day.

:07:20. > :07:23.As we get through to New Year's Eve, there will be a lot of cloud around,

:07:24. > :07:25.occasional brighter spells just about possible but it

:07:26. > :07:27.won't be as murky thanks to the south-westerly

:07:28. > :07:31.Temperatures reaching a high of 10 degrees.

:07:32. > :07:34.A bit milder than it has been for the last few days.

:07:35. > :07:36.The New Year celebrations, the weather looks something

:07:37. > :07:38.like this, dry, quite cloudy, temperatures around 7 degrees

:07:39. > :07:46.But then, for New Year's day, we have outbreaks of rain,

:07:47. > :07:49.perhaps even a bit of winteriness over the highest hills and then

:07:50. > :08:14.Good evening, fog has been a problem in recent days, slow changes over

:08:15. > :08:19.the next 48 hours or so as this weather front moves south bringing

:08:20. > :08:23.rain and behind it, much cleaner, cold arctic air which will sweep

:08:24. > :08:27.that fog out of the way. The fog was dense in places, you could hardly

:08:28. > :08:31.see across the Thames in Kingston, Greater London this afternoon. It

:08:32. > :08:35.has been thickening up in the last few hours and if you are on the move

:08:36. > :08:38.in the next few hours, into the morning, state shoes and two BBC

:08:39. > :08:42.local radio because it will keep you up-to-date because it will be dense
