:00:00. > :00:00.goodbye from me and on BBC One we join the BBC

:00:00. > :00:12.for 15 years for planting a homemade bomb on a tube train in October.

:00:13. > :00:17.The judge said the seriousness of what he did couldn't be overstated.

:00:18. > :00:23.Also tonight: Parents protest over funding as education becomes a key

:00:24. > :00:29.This woman regularly suffers abuse because of how she looks.

:00:30. > :00:40.One charity is trying to change that.

:00:41. > :00:51.And the Oscar worthy films coming from this quiet shed.

:00:52. > :00:59.Welcome to BBC London News with me Riz Lateef.

:01:00. > :01:02.A student who planted a home-made bomb on a busy tube train has been

:01:03. > :01:07.Damon Smith - who's 20 and has Asperger's Syndrome -

:01:08. > :01:09.was caught on CCTV leaving a bag filled with ball bearings

:01:10. > :01:23.The judge said although we have not been motivated by terrorism and the

:01:24. > :01:28.seriousness of what he did could not be overstated. His mother insists he

:01:29. > :01:36.is a vulnerable young man. Damon Smith studied at London

:01:37. > :01:41.Metropolitan University. Last October he let his accommodation and

:01:42. > :01:46.waited for the Jubilee line. This CCTV shows him checking the rucksack

:01:47. > :01:50.which had a bomb inside made from ball bearings and an alarm clock.

:01:51. > :01:54.The meter gets off at London Bridge leaving the bag behind. This device

:01:55. > :01:58.is time to go off in a few minutes later but it did not. The gene

:01:59. > :02:03.carried on to north Greenwich but the alarm was raised and the area

:02:04. > :02:11.evacuated. Counter-terrorism police said his bomb was a viable device

:02:12. > :02:15.that it failed to detonate. Damon Smith had previously posted images

:02:16. > :02:19.of himself with various weapons on social media. He learned how to make

:02:20. > :02:25.a bomb from an extremist Islamist website. They also suffered from

:02:26. > :02:31.Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. This is what he told the

:02:32. > :02:37.police after his arrest. I realise it was going to Stratford. I thought

:02:38. > :02:45.it would be a good time to read my bag for a prank. Following a trial

:02:46. > :02:49.Damon Smith was found guilty of having an explosive substance with

:02:50. > :03:00.intent. He was sentenced to 15 months -- 15 years in prison today.

:03:01. > :03:04.The judge said he did not believe the defendant was motivated by

:03:05. > :03:08.Terrorism Act that said he had to treat him as a dangerous offender at

:03:09. > :03:13.the seriousness of what he did cannot be overstated. The judge also

:03:14. > :03:16.spoke of this year that we all live and add to the recent terrorist

:03:17. > :03:23.attack in Manchester. At his family home in Devon his mother told the

:03:24. > :03:28.BBC she believes Asperger's syndrome influenced his actions. I said can

:03:29. > :03:33.you be more convenient because of Asperger's? He has never been in

:03:34. > :03:37.trouble with the police before. -- be more lenient. He is a vulnerable

:03:38. > :03:42.little boy. He needs help, not prison. Damon Smith will serve his

:03:43. > :03:49.sentence at a youth offenders institution.

:03:50. > :03:52.Turning to the election - and education has become a key

:03:53. > :03:55.So much so, parents and teachers are protesting across London this

:03:56. > :03:59.All the main political parties are promising more

:04:00. > :04:02.A series of eye-catching policies have also been announced to try

:04:03. > :04:04.and improve the life-chances of the most disadvantaged pupils.

:04:05. > :04:07.Our Education Reporter Marc Ashdown has been looking at what

:04:08. > :04:13.Good morning, it's Monday September the 1st 2021.

:04:14. > :04:18.For the first time ever an equal number of pupils from

:04:19. > :04:20.disadvantaged backgrounds are starting at University at the same

:04:21. > :04:28.Now that is an education policy maker's dream.

:04:29. > :04:31.But back to today's reality and for too many pupils

:04:32. > :04:33.the idea of studying in

:04:34. > :04:39.a place like this, Oxford, is just that, a far-away distant dream.

:04:40. > :04:42.How can the next Government change things?

:04:43. > :04:55.Pupils from their areas of London that have historically never

:04:56. > :04:59.I was one of the first people in my school

:05:00. > :05:02.to ever even get through to the interview and then get the offer.

:05:03. > :05:03.Me being here symbolises rising up from

:05:04. > :05:12.I was one of two people who have for the first time been admitted

:05:13. > :05:16.When the e-mail came through it was more of a whole

:05:17. > :05:20.What opened their eyes to the possibilities?

:05:21. > :05:24.I was very much an average student, underachieving.

:05:25. > :05:29.Manifestos are full of big education policies.

:05:30. > :05:31.The Conservatives believe Grammar schools will help boost social

:05:32. > :05:35.They will also scrap universal free school meals but

:05:36. > :05:39.Labour wants to keep free school meals and

:05:40. > :05:45.The Lib Dems would also keep free meals and

:05:46. > :05:50.I wouldn't have necessarily gone to a grammar school.

:05:51. > :05:53.And if the talent at my school had been sucked up by a

:05:54. > :05:55.grammar school I don't know whether I would

:05:56. > :05:57.have had people that I would

:05:58. > :06:00.You get the criticism that grammar schools are meant

:06:01. > :06:03.for working-class kids to get better opportunities, better resources.

:06:04. > :06:05.Now that goes to people that can afford

:06:06. > :06:15.so much tuition from the ages of five and six.

:06:16. > :06:17.I think if they overhaul that testing system.

:06:18. > :06:19.I think tuition fees are problematic.

:06:20. > :06:21.You're just saddling young people with more and

:06:22. > :06:25.So I think that even if the tuition fee

:06:26. > :06:27.system is not revised the

:06:28. > :06:30.maintenance grant and loan system has to be because it's a massive

:06:31. > :06:33.These three are working hard towards their degrees.

:06:34. > :06:38.After the election the hard work to inspire more pupils begins.

:06:39. > :06:40.So, Marc, clearly lots of issues around education -

:06:41. > :06:45.and parents today making their feelings clear on funding?

:06:46. > :06:52.Yes. Selection will be a big debate over the next five or so years but

:06:53. > :06:56.no funding is the big issue. Schools especially in London a they are

:06:57. > :07:00.being squeezed, expected to pay for more with budgets frozen. Already we

:07:01. > :07:04.are seeing parent power evident over the past few weeks, protests and

:07:05. > :07:08.this spine in East London have been springing up. Public meetings also.

:07:09. > :07:12.They are well organised and well attended by parents and teachers and

:07:13. > :07:17.they are all saying similar things. The cats have already affected our

:07:18. > :07:23.school. The resources, teachers are already finding it difficult. The

:07:24. > :07:27.less funding that we have, it stops the children from being able to

:07:28. > :07:32.achieve what they need to. Our primary School is not getting

:07:33. > :07:35.funded. A lot of my secondary school is even worse? I have also been

:07:36. > :07:40.talking to headteachers at their annual conference in a few weeks

:07:41. > :07:44.ago. They are also worried about funding, in particular the new fair

:07:45. > :07:49.funding formula that ideally would benefit schools in the countryside

:07:50. > :07:52.at the expense of those in the cities. And recruitment, everybody

:07:53. > :07:59.says you need to chain and keep the best teachers. An absolute priority

:08:00. > :08:03.for any priority -- for any Government is to sort out retention

:08:04. > :08:13.and recruitment crisis and invest in teachers. Professional development

:08:14. > :08:18.so that they are. It always seems to come down to

:08:19. > :08:22.money. It does. In their manifestos the Conservatives are pledging an

:08:23. > :08:24.extra ?4 billion over the next Parliament for schools. Reader and

:08:25. > :08:29.the Lib Dems say that there's nothing like enough when you bring

:08:30. > :08:32.inflation into effect so they say six billion and 7 billion

:08:33. > :08:36.respectively. Big sums and big issues. Parents and teachers,

:08:37. > :08:41.already mobilised to make sure schools don't miss out.

:08:42. > :08:43.Thank you. That was our education reporter.

:08:44. > :08:46.A High Court judge has ruled that Heathrow cannot charge Crossrail

:08:47. > :08:48.for using its track to travel to the airport.

:08:49. > :08:53.Heathrow spent ?1 billion building the five-mile line.

:08:54. > :08:55.Today they said they're disappointed with the result

:08:56. > :09:01.Police are asking Londoners to remain alert and report anything

:09:02. > :09:02.suspicious as extra armed officers continue to patrol

:09:03. > :09:11.It comes after the terror threat level was raised to critical -

:09:12. > :09:18.Our reporter Frankie McCamley is at Westminster.

:09:19. > :09:26.How different will things feel this weekend? With thousands of people

:09:27. > :09:30.heading to the city for key attractions. Especially the bank

:09:31. > :09:34.holiday with this lovely sunny weather including right here in

:09:35. > :09:39.Westminster. And some of the biggest sporting events taking place this

:09:40. > :09:43.year. Security will remain tight. We will see Esther police officers on

:09:44. > :09:49.the streets, extra and police officers on the streets, -- we will

:09:50. > :09:57.see extra police officers. The terror threat level was raised, a

:09:58. > :10:02.lot of old buildings were close to the public. As of tomorrow some of

:10:03. > :10:07.the House of parliament to us will resume. The terror threat level does

:10:08. > :10:11.remain critical which means an attack is imminent. I have been

:10:12. > :10:12.speaking to one Metropolitan Police officer who has been telling me what

:10:13. > :10:15.that means to the public. At the events that are taking place

:10:16. > :10:19.at the weekend I think people should be prepared to see increased

:10:20. > :10:22.searching of bags, more security. Arrive early and in plenty of time,

:10:23. > :10:26.perhaps not as late as you would do Policing perspective,

:10:27. > :10:28.you are going to see Not at events but transport hubs

:10:29. > :10:34.and around the crowded and iconic places we have got

:10:35. > :10:37.here in the It is my job and everybody who works

:10:38. > :10:41.in the Met police to keep We want people to come and enjoy

:10:42. > :10:47.the range of events that are taking place across

:10:48. > :11:02.the capital this weekend. That strong message was reiterated

:11:03. > :11:05.by the Home Secretary Amber Raju is urging people to get out and join

:11:06. > :11:16.their families this bank holiday weekend. -- Home Secretary Amber

:11:17. > :11:21.Rudd. She said let us carry on with our friends and our family. She did

:11:22. > :11:25.say some people might see extra relatively presents. As for the

:11:26. > :11:30.investigation into Mandy's terror attack that is still ongoing,

:11:31. > :11:46.Metropolitan Police are saying stay vigilant. -- investigation into

:11:47. > :11:49.Mandy's terror attack. -- Monday's terror attack.

:11:50. > :11:51.It's Friday evening, you're watching BBC London News.

:11:52. > :11:54.We meet the 63-year-old Oscar-winning animator who works out

:11:55. > :12:12.There are claims that more than one in four people

:12:13. > :12:15.who have a disfigurement to their face or body have suffered

:12:16. > :12:18.The charity Changing Faces says there's been a rise in cases

:12:19. > :12:24.Jim Wheble has been talking to one woman about her experience.

:12:25. > :12:28.Because I had a rare genetic condition, there are times

:12:29. > :12:31.where I would be walking down the street like this,

:12:32. > :12:42.But for Victoria, unfortunately, all too often it does not end there,

:12:43. > :12:53.I think I'm lucky living in Central London.

:12:54. > :12:57.Living in such an amazing city it means that on the whole people value

:12:58. > :13:03.and celebrate diversity and difference but then

:13:04. > :13:11.will be really nasty to me and shout abuse at me in the street.

:13:12. > :13:14.I have had men in cars who shout abuse at me through car windows.

:13:15. > :13:17.I have walked past people outside of pubs where they have gone "that

:13:18. > :13:21.Even in the last few days you have had abuse online?

:13:22. > :13:32.This image here with a character of a moon for a face

:13:33. > :13:35.and a long pointed chin, as you can see...

:13:36. > :13:41.Unpleasant words not repeatable on television.

:13:42. > :13:44.For the report, the charity, Changing Faces spoke to 800 people

:13:45. > :13:51.What strikes you is the intensity of the prejudice that people face.

:13:52. > :13:54.Nearly 80% said they had experienced harassment from a

:13:55. > :13:59.Nearly half said they'd been bullied at school.

:14:00. > :14:01.Virtually all said they'd been abused on

:14:02. > :14:09.Many of our clients and users they find social media a

:14:10. > :14:15.But social media is also very unregulated.

:14:16. > :14:17.When complaints are made by individuals

:14:18. > :14:24.In a report we found that the complaints that have been

:14:25. > :14:40.I have the right to have a family life and have friends and go

:14:41. > :14:45.a right to do all of that free from abuse.

:14:46. > :14:50.So I made a conscious decision that that is what I was going to do,

:14:51. > :15:00.to live my life and be happy and ignore and rise above the abuse.

:15:01. > :15:03.It's the oldest football competition in the world -

:15:04. > :15:08.and tomorrow's FA Cup final at Wembley is an all-London affair.

:15:09. > :15:10.The last time that happened was 15 years ago -

:15:11. > :15:13.and it was the same two teams Chelsea versus Arsenal.

:15:14. > :15:32.It should be. Their 136 FA Cup final and only the sixth of London final,

:15:33. > :15:39.it does not come around that often. This one will be played out in a

:15:40. > :15:43.slightly strange atmosphere stalls -- strange atmosphere. There will

:15:44. > :15:50.not be a victory parade through the streets of London. Despite that

:15:51. > :15:54.these two teams, as they are both at their best, should put on quite a

:15:55. > :15:57.display. Let us remind ourselves of that last meeting in 2002. A lot has

:15:58. > :16:03.changed since then. The last time these teams

:16:04. > :16:09.met in the cup final Arsene Wenger ended this season

:16:10. > :16:13.as a double winner a second time. 15 years on, tomorrow it's Chelsea

:16:14. > :16:16.going for the second Abramovich era, which would make it

:16:17. > :16:20.quite some first season for manager For 90 minutes, 120 minutes,

:16:21. > :16:23.maybe penalties, we have to forget for this moment

:16:24. > :16:26.that we won the league. And to be concentrated

:16:27. > :16:29.on this target. Don't forget it's

:16:30. > :16:33.a fantastic target. For all the success

:16:34. > :16:35.they've witnessed in the recent past many Chelsea fans agree

:16:36. > :16:37.Conte has delivered something By far it's the most technical team

:16:38. > :16:45.that we've seen with the likes of Pedro, Hazard,

:16:46. > :16:47.Willian in the middle. Prior teams were a bit

:16:48. > :16:51.more brute force. For Arsenal cup success

:16:52. > :16:58.would provide a sliver of consolation having missed

:16:59. > :17:00.out on Champions League It has not been a great season

:17:01. > :17:06.for us so we have the opportunity to make that a bit

:17:07. > :17:10.better at the weekend. With fans split on whether

:17:11. > :17:12.Arsene Wenger should stay or go it's been a season

:17:13. > :17:16.of protest and unrest at the We've had some wonderful years

:17:17. > :17:19.under Arsene Wenger. We do need to address

:17:20. > :17:26.the issues that we are There is infighting as I've never

:17:27. > :17:36.ever seen before and it will not be happening

:17:37. > :17:41.at football club. Fewer people expect Arsenal to lift

:17:42. > :17:53.the trophy this year. Arsene Wenger's first season ended

:17:54. > :17:59.in a double, Antonio Conte hopes to emulate that. Pat Nevin, do you

:18:00. > :18:03.expect your former club Chelsea to win? They will be favourites. They

:18:04. > :18:09.have been in fantastic form most of the season. Ever since the last

:18:10. > :18:13.Arsenal game away from home. They play their best they have got

:18:14. > :18:19.everything in their favour. Arsenal are missing some of the main

:18:20. > :18:24.players. All the indicators are going in one direction. Most of

:18:25. > :18:28.them, but not all of them. But Arsenal have been in good form the

:18:29. > :18:32.last four or five games, they are on a good run, ever since they went to

:18:33. > :18:41.the city for the formation. It has worked a treat. But he has to change

:18:42. > :18:44.the personnel quite a bit. Arsenal have been unlucky that they did not

:18:45. > :18:49.get to the top four this season. When you mention that top four, how

:18:50. > :18:54.much of a factor will that have on Arsene Wenger's decision? Will this

:18:55. > :18:58.be his last game? I have a suspicion they will stay. All that mood music

:18:59. > :19:03.I hear coming from everywhere, the media, slightly inside the club, he

:19:04. > :19:07.wants to stay. If he wants to stay he will stay. It would make an

:19:08. > :19:11.easier for him if he could get silverware at the end of the DNC is

:19:12. > :19:15.an FA Cup winner this season. But there is pressure on him, no doubt.

:19:16. > :19:19.The pressure is big. If he does not win this game you are looking at

:19:20. > :19:22.next season, talking about the quality of the clubs he is going to

:19:23. > :19:28.be up against, he is good to be under massive pressure, but forget

:19:29. > :19:34.about that, sunshine, Wembley, FA Cup final, that is the only thing on

:19:35. > :19:36.his mind. Thank you. How about this for an illustration of how football

:19:37. > :19:36.and When Chelsea won the cup

:19:37. > :19:44.for the first time in 1970 many fans Now only one of them remains -

:19:45. > :19:57.Sarah Harris has been to meet her. A stone's throw from Stamford Bridge

:19:58. > :20:02.on the eve of tomorrow's FA Cup final. This was the scene Street 47

:20:03. > :20:07.years ago when Chelsea were about to take on Leeds United to lift the

:20:08. > :20:12.trophy. Painted each one blue and white, the entire length of the

:20:13. > :20:16.street. Surely is the only resident still living on the road and

:20:17. > :20:20.remembers the atmosphere as if it was yesterday. The entire street was

:20:21. > :20:28.excited. There were loads of children their back then. They were

:20:29. > :20:32.all dressed in blue and white. And that man's came out the night

:20:33. > :20:38.before, painted all these kerbstones blue and white rate their way down

:20:39. > :20:41.the street. Then people open their windows, put the bunting treats

:20:42. > :20:49.across so the entire street had flags and bunting.

:20:50. > :20:56.# Blue is the colour football as the game. The team song as part of the

:20:57. > :20:59.tradition back then. After the 1970 triumph for Chelsea local children

:21:00. > :21:07.were even given the day off school to watch the victory parade.

:21:08. > :21:13.Chelsea were to lose out to Tottenham in the first of London FA

:21:14. > :21:21.Cup final back in 1967. But it was to be their year in 1970. It was

:21:22. > :21:26.just as well they celebrated because these loyal local fans had to wait

:21:27. > :21:36.another 24 years to cheer on their side in another FA Cup final, and 27

:21:37. > :21:39.to see them lift the trophy. And good luck to both teams.

:21:40. > :21:41.He may well be the most most unassuming Oscar-winner.

:21:42. > :21:43.A 63-year-old illustrator who works out of his garden

:21:44. > :21:47.After winning the award for a short film -

:21:48. > :21:50.he's now gone on to create his first feature film which is out today.

:21:51. > :21:53.Wendy Hurrell has been speaking to the man who's caught the eye

:21:54. > :22:09.Many miles from the Holyrood Hills a quiet garden then Muswell Hill where

:22:10. > :22:15.a Dutch man draws his turtles. They come to life in his first feature

:22:16. > :22:28.film, The Red Turtle. Much of the artwork was by hand before the CGI

:22:29. > :22:38.was added. The Oscar. Michael won this award in 2001 for a short

:22:39. > :22:46.animation. When you walk to the stage you think, don't trip, don't

:22:47. > :22:50.get distracted. You have a statue in your hand. You look at the audience.

:22:51. > :22:56.You see all these famous actors staring into your eyes. Others in

:22:57. > :23:07.the industry were also watching. A studio was watching. It was surreal.

:23:08. > :23:11.New proposed the story. You suggest the animation style, the graphic

:23:12. > :23:19.style, let us take it step-by-step. A tremendous accolade. Over to you.
