:00:00. > :00:19.Good evening from BBC London News, I'm Victoria Hollins.
:00:20. > :00:22.There was extra security in place today as thousands of runners took
:00:23. > :00:24.to the capital's streets for a 10K race.
:00:25. > :00:30.Organisers say last minute changes were made to arrangements,
:00:31. > :00:32.following the Manchester bombing - in collaboration with the
:00:33. > :00:49.United they run. A week ago today Londoners woke up to news of the
:00:50. > :00:51.Manchester attack. Today they still turned
:00:52. > :00:56.out in their thousands undeterred, to pound
:00:57. > :00:58.the streets of the capital. It made us even more
:00:59. > :01:09.determined, I think, to come And I think the
:01:10. > :01:11.atmosphere around the So despite the recent tragic events
:01:12. > :01:19.in Manchester, over 12,000 runners turned out today
:01:20. > :01:22.for the London Vitality 10K, snaking their way through some
:01:23. > :01:25.of London's most historic sites before crossing
:01:26. > :01:28.the finish line here in front of But of course the safety
:01:29. > :01:35.of everyone taking part today was uppermost in the minds
:01:36. > :01:40.of the organisers. We had a full security review
:01:41. > :01:43.with the mayor's office, the Metropolitan Police, the city
:01:44. > :01:45.of Westminster, all the agencies. The Royal Parks, everyone working
:01:46. > :01:48.together, a lot of security has been Because in essence that actually
:01:49. > :01:53.reduces the security if you Today's race which began with
:01:54. > :02:03.a minutes silence in memory of last week's attack, went
:02:04. > :02:04.off without a hitch. With just over a week to go before
:02:05. > :02:13.the general election- BBC London has visited one
:02:14. > :02:16.of our key battlegrounds. Carshalton and Wallington
:02:17. > :02:18.was the only seat in London that the Liberal Democrats
:02:19. > :02:19.won in 2015. So will their message on Brexit
:02:20. > :02:22.bring victory again? Or will local issues
:02:23. > :02:23.be more important? Welcome to the constituency
:02:24. > :02:31.of Carshalton and Warrington, on the Surrey border where most
:02:32. > :02:35.people voted Leave. It is one of the tightest
:02:36. > :02:38.marginals in London. But will it be bins or Brexit
:02:39. > :02:42.that decide it here? This is an incinerator
:02:43. > :02:45.which is going to be burning It is rubbish that concerns
:02:46. > :02:51.the Green candidate. As this incinerator nears completion
:02:52. > :02:55.in the north of the constituency. It is a really big issue because
:02:56. > :03:03.imagine if you live around here. I was chatting to a resident earlier
:03:04. > :03:06.today and she was telling me that she owns her house,
:03:07. > :03:08.and what are the chances of her selling her house
:03:09. > :03:11.with that here now? The value of the property
:03:12. > :03:13.has come down. I feel so sorry for people
:03:14. > :03:16.living around here. So will those who live nearby be
:03:17. > :03:18.tempted to vote Green? As we were filming, Karen Baldwin
:03:19. > :03:24.and her daughter passed by. It was not at all what we
:03:25. > :03:26.were led to believe. I really feel that we have been
:03:27. > :03:29.betrayed along the way. Will that change how you vote,
:03:30. > :03:33.would you consider voting Green? The thing is, with the Green Party,
:03:34. > :03:36.as much as you might have our best interests at heart,
:03:37. > :03:38.no one listens. Well locally it is a conservative
:03:39. > :03:45.Lib Dem marginal constituency. If enough people actually realised
:03:46. > :03:48.that the Green candidate that took on the council standing,
:03:49. > :03:51.we could actually get enough votes to be able to challenge those
:03:52. > :03:54.two parties as well. New bin collections from the local
:03:55. > :04:00.Liberal Democrat council have There are also concerns that
:04:01. > :04:04.services at the local The MP for the last 20 years has
:04:05. > :04:11.been the Liberal Democrat Tom brake. At the last election he got
:04:12. > :04:15.just 1510 votes more The bins issue is one that
:04:16. > :04:22.has not been helpful, but what we are starting to see
:04:23. > :04:25.is a decline in the level of complaints associated
:04:26. > :04:28.with the new contract. But there are other issues that
:04:29. > :04:30.I think play much more significantly in people's minds
:04:31. > :04:34.and that is the future of our local hospital, St Helier Hospital,
:04:35. > :04:36.where I have a track record of over 25 years of campaigning
:04:37. > :04:40.for that hospital. And Ukip now are not putting
:04:41. > :04:43.up a candidate here. The Tory candidate,
:04:44. > :04:49.who also voted remain, says he will be much tougher
:04:50. > :04:53.with the local council. One of my campaign issues has been
:04:54. > :04:57.to give the council a bit of a kick when it does not provide people
:04:58. > :04:59.with the kind of services We have had the same council
:05:00. > :05:03.in control here for more than 30 years and the Liberal Democrat MP
:05:04. > :05:06.I'm up against is So he finds it perhaps difficult
:05:07. > :05:10.to give them the kick they need Labour also achieved
:05:11. > :05:15.around 7000 votes in 2015. I think it's going be about Brexit
:05:16. > :05:18.and other national issues. I think it is going to be
:05:19. > :05:21.about the NHS as well. There is a big local issue in terms
:05:22. > :05:25.of St Helier Hospital and they feel they need somebody to speak
:05:26. > :05:26.up for them. But other local issues
:05:27. > :05:33.might play their part of candidates standing in Carshalton
:05:34. > :05:44.and Wallington on your screen now. There's plenty more information
:05:45. > :05:45.about the election- and your local constituency-
:05:46. > :05:47.on our website. Londoners are being asked not
:05:48. > :05:55.to feed the birds in Regent's Park- following fears it could be linked
:05:56. > :05:58.to cases of inbreeding- The park has one of the largest
:05:59. > :06:03.Grey Heron colonies in the capital. There is a mystery bird feeder
:06:04. > :06:09.who is dishing up unconventional food for these herons
:06:10. > :06:15.in Regents Park. This is one of the areas
:06:16. > :06:18.where you will see a lot of people putting food out for the geese
:06:19. > :06:21.and the ducks and for the herons. And notoriously,
:06:22. > :06:27.lots of curried rice. That's been a big problem
:06:28. > :06:29.here because it has just been It has been appearing regularly
:06:30. > :06:37.beside the water's edge and eaten by the birds,
:06:38. > :06:40.who are getting fat. There are now concerns
:06:41. > :06:42.about possible genetic mutation. Because they are so laden,
:06:43. > :06:45.they're not really flying off and exploring other areas
:06:46. > :06:47.so they are becoming And the problem is if they do become
:06:48. > :06:52.isolated then they do not manage to meet other herons from other
:06:53. > :06:54.colonies and interbreed. You end up with a very small
:06:55. > :06:57.gene pool and generation after generation after generation,
:06:58. > :07:00.that can lead to deformities. This island here in Regents Park
:07:01. > :07:03.is a heronry and home to around 20 It is one of the largest grey heron
:07:04. > :07:15.colonies in the whole of London. But it is not just here where bird
:07:16. > :07:18.feeding is causing a problem. Over in Richmond Park
:07:19. > :07:25.it is also a concern. After a while they get to recognise
:07:26. > :07:28.you. Royal Parks actually benefit
:07:29. > :07:30.from 77 million visitors And you can imagine if each of us
:07:31. > :07:34.just brings a little handful of food for the birds,
:07:35. > :07:37.that is just far too Back in Regents Park
:07:38. > :07:40.the mystery of the curried rice Let's turn now to a check
:07:41. > :07:54.on the weather with Wendy. We had a bit of everything this
:07:55. > :08:00.weekend. These pictures tell the story really well. We started on
:08:01. > :08:05.Saturday with beautiful sunshine. Then on Sunday very threatening
:08:06. > :08:10.skies in places and today something in between. We had some heavy
:08:11. > :08:14.showers today. This evening it remains cloudy and relatively warm
:08:15. > :08:20.and humid. Still some showers around this evening, moving up towards the
:08:21. > :08:25.north-east. So for most of the night it will become dry with some cloud
:08:26. > :08:33.around and temperatures slowly falling back to around 14, 15
:08:34. > :08:37.degrees. Then we're back to work tomorrow or back to school and there
:08:38. > :08:43.may be some showers at first. Then for the rest of the day it looks
:08:44. > :08:46.like it will be dry. Some breaks in the crowd, so this post listing
:08:47. > :08:51.temperatures into the low 20s for London. If you love the Sunshine
:08:52. > :08:54.bent on Wednesday is your day, barely a cloud in the sky on
:08:55. > :08:59.Wednesday. And that helped to lift the damages to 21 degrees. This is
:09:00. > :09:04.because high pressure is building and the wind will be light as well.
:09:05. > :09:08.Then looking at the outlook, temperatures picking up again
:09:09. > :09:13.through Thursday and Friday, plenty of sunshine, 24, 20 5 degrees. There
:09:14. > :09:17.could be some rain passing through overnight into Saturday, we need to
:09:18. > :09:19.watch that but that would freshen things up a bit. An interesting bank
:09:20. > :09:21.holiday as always. We're back after
:09:22. > :09:24.the ten o clock news. From all of us here,
:09:25. > :09:28.do have a lovely evening.
