:00:00. > :00:09.That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me.
:00:10. > :00:12.Tonight on BBC London News - we're live at City Hall
:00:13. > :00:14.where a vigil is being held in honour of the victims
:00:15. > :00:30.many with messages of love and support for the families
:00:31. > :00:39.In the past few minutes they heard this tribute from the Mayor.
:00:40. > :00:42.The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says London stands in defiance
:00:43. > :00:56.As the London, it wants to send a clear message to the sick and evil
:00:57. > :01:07.extremists who commit these hideous crimes. We will defeat you. You will
:01:08. > :01:14.not win. Today we mourn the loss of innocent lives. Londoners and people
:01:15. > :01:21.from around the world. We sent our love to the victims' families and
:01:22. > :01:25.all those who were injured. And we thank our courageous emergency
:01:26. > :01:30.services and the brave Londoners who risk their lives to care for others.
:01:31. > :01:38.You are the best of us. APPLAUSE
:01:39. > :01:43.As you heard, huge applause for his words there, the crowd that is a
:01:44. > :01:48.mixture of ages and faces and faiths coming together here tonight. There
:01:49. > :01:51.has been a mixture of emotions because of the last couple of days
:01:52. > :01:56.we have heard heartbreaking accounts of how those tragic events unfolded
:01:57. > :01:57.that we have also hired heart-warming stories and remarkable
:01:58. > :01:59.tales of courage and compassion. Our correspondent Karl Mercer has
:02:00. > :02:01.spoken to one doctor who described the wounds
:02:02. > :02:04.that he and colleagues treated. London's NHS was tested once
:02:05. > :02:09.again on Saturday night. From the front line paramedics
:02:10. > :02:11.who treated people around Borough Market, to the specialist
:02:12. > :02:13.trauma teams who cared People like Malik Ramadhan, a doctor
:02:14. > :02:18.at the Royal London in Whitechapel, cycling home when he saw dozens
:02:19. > :02:21.of police cars shoot past him. He turned round and went back
:02:22. > :02:24.to work just as the first I think what was perhaps different
:02:25. > :02:30.was if we take 12 casualties normally there will be a range
:02:31. > :02:33.of injuries and severity but all 12 of the people we received
:02:34. > :02:41.were very severely injured. The thing that was perhaps different
:02:42. > :02:44.was the clear lethality. The stab wounds were
:02:45. > :02:46.designed to kill people. There were no little slices,
:02:47. > :02:48.there were no flesh wounds, they were all very deep,
:02:49. > :02:51.penetrating injuries And they all needed an operation,
:02:52. > :03:00.they all needed something to repair London's Ambulance Service sent 80
:03:01. > :03:09.medics to the scene, eventually taking 48 patients
:03:10. > :03:14.to hospitals across the capital. There were lots and lots of patients
:03:15. > :03:19.and quite confusing information Lots of members of the police
:03:20. > :03:23.and the public did some quite heroic things to try and save the lives
:03:24. > :03:26.of people who had been 14 patients remain at Kings College
:03:27. > :03:30.hospital, half of them The predominant injuries
:03:31. > :03:35.we are treating our stab wounds to the head, neck,
:03:36. > :03:38.torso and abdomen. We have also got a number
:03:39. > :03:41.of patients who suffered blunt force trauma as well from probably
:03:42. > :03:57.being hit by a vehicle. And how do you deal with the
:03:58. > :04:02.relatives when they come in? That is something that has been more
:04:03. > :04:07.difficult than normal, a huge range of nationalities and couples and I
:04:08. > :04:11.think that is something that has been quite different for us, a
:04:12. > :04:16.series of couples walking along the bridge had been knocked down. Some
:04:17. > :04:21.people have pushed their loved one out of the way of the fun and
:04:22. > :04:25.another injured and so we have had to cope with the feelings of people
:04:26. > :04:29.who are injured but were also part of the events. As well as looking
:04:30. > :04:38.after the person who is injured from the event. I have dealt with a
:04:39. > :04:42.number of incidents like this before so vile I would say it has become a
:04:43. > :04:46.normality, I have a way of coping with it and I will sit back and
:04:47. > :04:51.reflect on what went one and reflect on the excellent care that the teams
:04:52. > :04:55.you has delivered. A look round and I can see a bunch of world-class
:04:56. > :05:01.people saving lives and I am part of that. To think I was temporarily
:05:02. > :05:05.leaving the team is incredibly humbling. I'm
:05:06. > :05:18.pleased to say the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan joins me. We had that
:05:19. > :05:21.we're living in a new reality and it is a second time we are talking
:05:22. > :05:27.individual to remember Londoners who have lost their lives. Is it getting
:05:28. > :05:31.harder to reassure people? The threat level for a number of years
:05:32. > :05:37.now has been at severe. That means an attack is highly likely. It went
:05:38. > :05:41.up for a short period after Manchester but we have to be
:05:42. > :05:44.vigilant, make sure we are come at anything suspicious we report to the
:05:45. > :05:49.police. One of the first things I did as mayor was to approve the 600
:05:50. > :05:52.additional armed officers to be sure we are as safe as possible but we
:05:53. > :05:58.all have a role to play to make sure we stay safe. Is it harder to
:05:59. > :06:03.reassure Londoners when people like President Trump criticise us? My
:06:04. > :06:08.focus since Saturday has been dealing with the horrific attack on
:06:09. > :06:14.a city, on Londoners and visitors. I really don't have time to respond to
:06:15. > :06:19.preach from Donald Trump will stop we have to recognise some people
:06:20. > :06:24.want to divide committees, some people thrive on fuelling division.
:06:25. > :06:27.That is not me on the London that I know and we are not going to allow
:06:28. > :06:32.anybody like Donald Trump or anyone to divide our communities. These
:06:33. > :06:37.three men who committed this act of terror, these terrorists who killed
:06:38. > :06:43.a number of people and injured many others, they believe in a perverse,
:06:44. > :06:51.twisted poisonous form of Islam but I don't recognise, this doesn't
:06:52. > :06:54.recognise the face that I know. We know that plots have been disrupted
:06:55. > :06:59.since Westminster, questions are being raised about how we're going
:07:00. > :07:02.to stop this because these were unsophisticated attacks, vehicles
:07:03. > :07:07.and a knife, they are harder to prevent? We need to recognise that
:07:08. > :07:11.those who want to harm us are evolving and finding new ways to
:07:12. > :07:18.harm us and to injure us and we have to bring finding new ways to defend
:07:19. > :07:23.ourselves. We know that two of them tonight have been named and are from
:07:24. > :07:29.London? They don't represent the Londoner that we know, we saw their
:07:30. > :07:36.review of our city is twisted and not one that we recognise and I
:07:37. > :07:40.condemn them unequivocally. I condemn the poisonous ideology that
:07:41. > :07:43.they subscribe to but also I say to any would-be terrorists, any
:07:44. > :07:58.would-be extremist or extremist, yard going to win. You're not go to
:07:59. > :08:01.divide our communities. Thank you. We did hear comments from the Prime
:08:02. > :08:03.Minister yesterday saying enough is enough and things need to change
:08:04. > :08:16.when it comes to tackling Exuma is. Asad Ahmad has visited East London
:08:17. > :08:19.and has been hearing conflicting views on how to stop
:08:20. > :08:30.home grown terrorism. There are not frightened,
:08:31. > :08:31.they're not scared. They are your typical
:08:32. > :08:33.resilient Londoners. Here in east London, like elsewhere,
:08:34. > :08:36.people are still feeling uncomfortable that Saturday's
:08:37. > :08:38.attack even happened. And uncomfortable too,
:08:39. > :08:43.among Muslims anyway, that the attackers claimed to be
:08:44. > :08:46.acting in the name of their faith. To me, I don't believe any
:08:47. > :08:49.Muslim would do this. If there are extremists out
:08:50. > :08:54.there in the mosque, But to actually just
:08:55. > :08:57.blame the Muslims, all I am not proposing the round-up
:08:58. > :09:12.people at random, I am proposing that we use the intelligence we have
:09:13. > :09:15.available, place it in front of a panel of specially cleared
:09:16. > :09:17.senior judges who can make a decision and they
:09:18. > :09:19.would detain them for But locking up people before
:09:20. > :09:24.a crime is even committed We have to ensure that we get
:09:25. > :09:30.the evidence, generate information from the community
:09:31. > :09:32.and if the evidence We don't lock up people
:09:33. > :09:38.without due process and rule of law because if we do,
:09:39. > :09:40.we are exactly the same Similarly, on our streets there
:09:41. > :09:45.is no one view as to the causes And they should change
:09:46. > :09:57.their foreign policy. When they get information then
:09:58. > :09:59.the authorities should take action And you are concerned
:10:00. > :10:03.that they don't always act? I would advise not anyone to be
:10:04. > :10:07.scared of reporting. It is important that you do
:10:08. > :10:10.because it is safe for our country The radicalisation debate
:10:11. > :10:14.within muslim communities has been going on at least to some
:10:15. > :10:18.extent since 7/7. But today the Archbishop
:10:19. > :10:21.of Canterbury said this time in the extremists narrative
:10:22. > :10:25.was challenged head-on. Religious tradition, scriptures,
:10:26. > :10:30.have been twisted and misused. We have to say that if something
:10:31. > :10:33.is happening within our own faith tradition, we must take
:10:34. > :10:35.responsibility for being very What is clear is that there is no
:10:36. > :10:41.single answer to solving violent extremism and that Londoners
:10:42. > :10:44.are clearly not lacking in hope and ideas and also the commitment
:10:45. > :11:09.to want to work together. it is natural for people to respond
:11:10. > :11:15.to another attack on a city in different ways. Some people feel
:11:16. > :11:16.defiant, others are resilient there is sadness and other people are
:11:17. > :11:23.saying it is OK to feel scared. Londoners may be trying to get
:11:24. > :11:25.back to their routine, but there was a sense of people
:11:26. > :11:28.paying their respects close to where so many were injured
:11:29. > :11:32.and lost their lives. Russell Lancaster was making
:11:33. > :11:34.his way into the city. He collected his children
:11:35. > :11:37.from a concert at the O2 on Saturday night and was keeping calm for them
:11:38. > :11:43.but today it hit home. When you are here it is just scary,
:11:44. > :11:48.it grabs you, doesn't it? But the city will move
:11:49. > :11:54.on and it will recover Cafes close to the cordon
:11:55. > :12:01.opened their doors as usual, some serving refreshments to police
:12:02. > :12:05.officers and hospital There is no sense of panic but dad
:12:06. > :12:10.of three Claudio stopped his son going on a class trip
:12:11. > :12:15.to the British Museum today. You don't know where and you don't
:12:16. > :12:19.know when, so I would rather have my child stay by his mother's
:12:20. > :12:21.side rather than go If he wants to learn
:12:22. > :12:25.about the British Museum, I'm sure we will take trips
:12:26. > :12:29.again but at this period of time as a father,
:12:30. > :12:32.that's what you do, you tend It is hard for some people to sum up
:12:33. > :12:41.the sense of caution they feel. Businesswoman Irene says
:12:42. > :12:43.she is thinking twice about a trip to the Shard but thinks
:12:44. > :12:48.she will carry on. When an incident like that happens,
:12:49. > :12:51.you are fearful for your family travelling into London
:12:52. > :12:56.but it is an apprehension and I think that it does
:12:57. > :12:58.make you more aware. Mini brought flowers
:12:59. > :13:01.to show that they cared. The Sumners live in a flat
:13:02. > :13:04.overlooking Borough Market I think people are more kind to each
:13:05. > :13:13.other but also if they see something strange they would report
:13:14. > :13:18.to the police. I think this is what
:13:19. > :13:22.we did yesterday. We saw something from our window
:13:23. > :13:25.and we went to the police In London, keeping calm and carrying
:13:26. > :13:31.on is said to be part of the DNA. But after the shock many who live
:13:32. > :14:04.and work close to where the attack Have been speaking to some many down
:14:05. > :14:07.here, many of them and talk about why it was so important to come but
:14:08. > :14:11.you can hear in their voices the emotion that they are feeling, a
:14:12. > :14:16.difficult they feel it is to still come here and think about what has
:14:17. > :14:20.actually happened. We can speak to two people who have come here today.
:14:21. > :14:25.User saying this he was very personal, tell us why. I commute in
:14:26. > :14:31.and out of London Bridge every day, socialise and Borough Market fairly
:14:32. > :14:36.often and have friends and family that Oracle to the area. We spent a
:14:37. > :14:42.lot of time here, this is summer I am everyday. For to happen on your
:14:43. > :14:48.doorstep is quite violating. I was so important for you to come? I
:14:49. > :14:52.think everyone is still in a state of shock and there is something very
:14:53. > :14:57.cathartic and healing about being here together and listening to the
:14:58. > :15:04.mayor it is very comforting anyway so it was important to process what
:15:05. > :15:13.happened to be here with everyone. Your urban family. We have heard a
:15:14. > :15:17.lot in social media, talking about whether the jewels like this do any
:15:18. > :15:20.good but many people are saying but it was important for them to come
:15:21. > :15:29.and they thought it said a message of defiance. -- vigils like this.
:15:30. > :15:33.Saturday night's attack was the first time Scotland Yard issued a
:15:34. > :15:40.warning during a terror attack ASCII people to run and hide and tell the
:15:41. > :15:42.authorities what was happening. We look at Whatmore wannabe done to
:15:43. > :16:01.stop further attacks. Nice men were on the loose rampaging
:16:02. > :16:08.through Borough Market. At 11:46pm, the Metropolitan Police treated this
:16:09. > :16:13.instruction, run, hide, Teller. The best option is to evacuate but only
:16:14. > :16:17.do so... For the past 18 months we have been urged to know what to do
:16:18. > :16:22.if there is an attack. The officer in charge of policing Borough Market
:16:23. > :16:25.believes the public response. We don't put these things out unless we
:16:26. > :16:30.really need to but the committee reacted fantastically well and
:16:31. > :16:33.people don't as they were asked and acted heroically and got in there
:16:34. > :16:37.and help other people and protected one another and helped officers and
:16:38. > :16:43.I can speak highly enough. They were outstanding. The man who last year
:16:44. > :16:46.reviewed how well a Londoner was prepared for a terror attack is
:16:47. > :16:51.urging Londoners to do more to plan for the worst. It needs to be part
:16:52. > :16:55.of everyday life that you automatically know that in the event
:16:56. > :16:59.of an incident like that you run away from danger. If you can't run
:17:00. > :17:04.because you are boxed in or what ever else, then you hide as well as
:17:05. > :17:08.you can and as soon as you're safe, make contact with the police to let
:17:09. > :17:12.them know that you are there and that however many other people out
:17:13. > :17:16.there with you. This morning the police but temporary barriers onto
:17:17. > :17:25.Westminster Bridge will stop on Saturday night, pedestrians and a
:17:26. > :17:28.famous London Crossing. You will see from Whitehall that their work
:17:29. > :17:33.permit solutions put in place after 7-7 and that is what we are working
:17:34. > :17:40.towards no. It looks like a barriers in London will become normal. But
:17:41. > :17:43.this is a specific response to a specific threat, using vehicles to
:17:44. > :17:48.target pedestrians. On Saturday night the attackers also had knives.
:17:49. > :17:53.In Manchester it was an expose of device. The terror threat we face is
:17:54. > :17:59.evolving. I think what is happening is unprecedented. There is very
:18:00. > :18:01.strange ways that people are going about what is happening and we are
:18:02. > :18:06.faced with scenarios that we have never seen before so it is hard as
:18:07. > :18:11.police to plan for this sort of thing. No one quite knows how the
:18:12. > :18:14.city will look and feel in the coming months and years as it
:18:15. > :18:24.confronts a different type of terror threat.
:18:25. > :18:32.I am pleased to say that the chair of the bank said a resident forum is
:18:33. > :18:37.with me. You took refuge with the Dean of Suffolk. We spoke to you on
:18:38. > :18:45.Sunday. Why is it important to come here today? It is important to come
:18:46. > :18:52.here because I felt emotional at the time because of the fact that Andrew
:18:53. > :18:56.gave me shelter and coming here to see so many different people in
:18:57. > :18:59.unity and solidarity, I feel quite touched and I felt it was important
:19:00. > :19:05.to pay respect to those people who had lost their lives and I can't
:19:06. > :19:09.imagine what their families are going through because I know when I
:19:10. > :19:14.was stranded and lost, my mother was constantly calling me. I felt it was
:19:15. > :19:20.important to come and pay my respects. How would you do shave in
:19:21. > :19:26.the mood here? People are discussing but it was packed. There is a sombre
:19:27. > :19:31.peaceful mood here and everyone is united and feel that together we
:19:32. > :19:35.will never let any division come between us. There is a lot of unity
:19:36. > :19:44.and that is what everyone feels. Thank you. Hearing another message
:19:45. > :19:45.of determination and resilience, carry on with your daily activities
:19:46. > :19:47.as much as possible. Now - Campaigning for the general
:19:48. > :19:49.election has resumed after being suspended temporarily --
:19:50. > :19:52.Our political editor, Tim Donovan, has visited Hounslow to see if this
:19:53. > :19:54.terror attack has had any impact on how people plan
:19:55. > :20:06.to vote on Thursday. Some will never be convinced that
:20:07. > :20:10.Jeremy Corbyn is the right man. There is no way" of what foreign
:20:11. > :20:16.labour. She has a terrorist sympathiser. Picking up their
:20:17. > :20:25.children from school today, others had been persuaded. To lose a
:20:26. > :20:30.telly-mac it seems to me that Jeremy Corbyn has the right kind of
:20:31. > :20:34.approach. Was the London terror attack plane and minds coach-mac I
:20:35. > :20:37.am carrying on as normal because if we live our life in fear it only
:20:38. > :20:42.creates more fear are just trying to spread love and light. It makes you
:20:43. > :20:47.think about who is probably the safest person to look after our
:20:48. > :20:54.families and communities and it should be in peoples minds. I'm not
:20:55. > :21:00.sure who that is. Still a few days. In the high Street, a strong sense
:21:01. > :21:05.of not being an easy solution. It can prompt and incite racial hate
:21:06. > :21:10.more than anything. It is a religion but you get the picture. It is
:21:11. > :21:13.inevitable. The problem is that politicians have is that of a
:21:14. > :21:18.suggested is anything to do with religious beliefs that will inflame
:21:19. > :21:23.people who have religious belief. As the Hounslow mosque, the words of
:21:24. > :21:28.the prime Minster, enough is enough had been heard clearly. I think the
:21:29. > :21:33.premise that pointed out yesterday quite clearly it is more internet
:21:34. > :21:37.driven than mosque driven by the Government is to work more closely
:21:38. > :21:42.with mosques and other faith centres to come up with solutions. It is a
:21:43. > :21:46.borough that has lost police officers and a number of community
:21:47. > :21:54.support officers has fallen from 100 to 20 in six years. We have CCTV and
:21:55. > :21:57.you are under surveillance but I think there needs to be under the
:21:58. > :22:03.public eye you need to see the police walking up and down street.
:22:04. > :22:07.You can have 100 policemen parading this small high street but if
:22:08. > :22:11.somebody is going to do something stupid and they are going to do it.
:22:12. > :22:18.Whose message will cut through and the last few campaign days and
:22:19. > :22:25.expectedly clouded by terror risen? -- terrorism
:22:26. > :22:38.let's see what the weather is good to do. Good evening. We have some
:22:39. > :22:42.sunshine earlier. But of course the cloud gathered into the afternoon
:22:43. > :22:47.and it is been a fresh and windy feeling day and some rain spreading
:22:48. > :22:52.in from the west. The very wet state ahead. Not too much improvement of
:22:53. > :22:58.the week, and quite unsettled but at times it will feel much more like
:22:59. > :23:01.October. Wet and windy and gusty tomorrow but dry days, Wednesday and
:23:02. > :23:07.Friday with some sunshine and times. But a complete wash-out but it will
