:00:11. > :00:26.We will be exploring the anger people in their area are expressing.
:00:27. > :00:27.We start our coverage with the protest took place at Kensington and
:00:28. > :00:37.Chelsea town hall. They mark from Grenfell Tower to the
:00:38. > :00:42.town hall. Three days on from this deadly fire in one of London's
:00:43. > :00:47.richest boroughs, people here feel they are being ignored. There are
:00:48. > :00:54.unanswered questions for the victims. The families are upset and
:00:55. > :01:05.angry and they want answers. Nobody from the council has seen anyone. So
:01:06. > :01:13.many kids died in so many families. The BBC's Dan Johnson was reporting
:01:14. > :01:20.as the Demel approached. It looks like the crowd is moving towards the
:01:21. > :01:26.door of the town hall. That is the main entrance to the officers. It
:01:27. > :01:39.looks like people are trying to get in. We want justice! And they did.
:01:40. > :01:44.Almost overwhelming the handful of security. But the local council
:01:45. > :01:55.officials they wanted to see were nowhere to be seen. Inside the
:01:56. > :02:00.building or outside. Let him speak! We took our demands to the council
:02:01. > :02:08.and we expected a response from the Chief Executive of the council, who
:02:09. > :02:14.has failed to turn up. Mustafa Al Mansour organised this protest. His
:02:15. > :02:17.friend and her children are missing. He has a list of demands for the
:02:18. > :02:22.council that include the commitment that those who lost their homes get
:02:23. > :02:27.houses in the local area and funds are made immediately available and
:02:28. > :02:34.the names of those in Grenfell Tower are released. Tonight after a
:02:35. > :02:49.harrowing three days, these protesters are falling taking -- are
:02:50. > :03:03.Vowing to You will not be able to see -- you
:03:04. > :03:06.will be able to see people walking on this road. The demonstration
:03:07. > :03:12.which has been going on at the steps of the council is now trying to
:03:13. > :03:17.close. People are walking to Kensington High Street carry on the
:03:18. > :03:21.process. We have seen some passionate scenes, people attempting
:03:22. > :03:25.to break into the town hall. After that it was a different atmosphere,
:03:26. > :03:29.almost like the community were speaking with one voice, largely
:03:30. > :03:33.because there was only one megaphone and members of the crowd were taking
:03:34. > :03:38.the loudspeaker, having their say, to rapturous cheers and applause.
:03:39. > :03:45.Time and again, the subject that came up was what people here
:03:46. > :03:49.perceived to be the faceless nature of the council. Earlier I spoke to
:03:50. > :03:50.Mustafa Al Mansour, one of the people he helped organise the
:03:51. > :03:52.protest. My sister's close friend,
:03:53. > :03:54.Rania Ibrham, the lady who was on the 23rd floor with two
:03:55. > :03:59.children, she perished while asking for help and no help
:04:00. > :04:01.could reach her. And so people are here
:04:02. > :04:03.today to demand that The general public
:04:04. > :04:10.have done quite a lot. Do you feel the council
:04:11. > :04:13.have done nothing today? The council have not done
:04:14. > :04:20.anything publicly to date. They have not made any public
:04:21. > :04:23.commitment as to how much funds they are going to allocate
:04:24. > :04:25.to compensate the victims The council have not made
:04:26. > :04:31.a firm public commitment on where they will rehouse victims
:04:32. > :04:33.of this disaster. There are a lot of people here,
:04:34. > :04:42.I think probably thousands now, demanding the council come
:04:43. > :04:44.out and make a formal No member of the council
:04:45. > :04:48.has come out till now, they have provided us a written
:04:49. > :04:51.statement by Martin Fitzpatrick, the head of communications
:04:52. > :04:53.of the council, which does not answer the exact
:04:54. > :05:06.demands of the public. You can hear the passion and the
:05:07. > :05:12.arguments and the word justice coming up time and again by many
:05:13. > :05:16.people here. In fairness to the council, they released a statement
:05:17. > :05:23.recently, bullet points, in which they outlined what they would do. A
:05:24. > :05:29.written commitment on an immediate rehousing of the victims of Grenfell
:05:30. > :05:36.Tower, immediate release of funds to cover the losses and welfare of
:05:37. > :05:42.victims. The community had been gathering clothes and food, and
:05:43. > :05:46.nobody from the council appears to have been able to direct that two
:05:47. > :05:52.were it needed to go. The council appears to address that here. And an
:05:53. > :05:58.investigation on the recent ?10 million refurbishment, a commitment
:05:59. > :06:02.there. The release of a full list of the victims who have tragically died
:06:03. > :06:07.in this disaster. And an investigation into all other similar
:06:08. > :06:14.buildings in the borough to identify risks that may be there. But you can
:06:15. > :06:18.probably hear in the background, people still shouting, people still
:06:19. > :06:23.passionate about what has happened, there is anger on the streets but
:06:24. > :06:24.there is also a sense that there will be answers because the
:06:25. > :06:40.community demands it. Thank you for that. That is not the
:06:41. > :06:42.only protest the supplement. There is another one in Westminster.
:06:43. > :06:46.That's where we can join Ayshea Buksh who can tell us more.
:06:47. > :06:55.This protest was organised through Facebook and social media and
:06:56. > :07:00.hundreds of people have turned up. It gathered outside the Home Office
:07:01. > :07:06.but we are now walking towards Westminster. Many different groups
:07:07. > :07:09.from across London, protest groups, residents groups, and their main
:07:10. > :07:15.concern is the safety of residents of tower blocks, and justice for the
:07:16. > :07:22.Grenfell Tower residents. I am joined by a couple of people from
:07:23. > :07:28.South Kilburn. Why did you want to protest this evening outside a
:07:29. > :07:31.government department? It has been such a shock for us. We live in
:07:32. > :07:36.tower blocks and we want to come here and get justice for the people
:07:37. > :07:44.from Grenfell Tower. How do you define justice? Companies like
:07:45. > :07:47.Rydon, a profit of 7 million, they need to go to court, someone needs
:07:48. > :07:55.to go to prison for corporate manslaughter. Regeneration must stop
:07:56. > :08:00.being costed at the lowest tender. They have to start looking at safety
:08:01. > :08:03.for all residents. The Prime Minister has ordered a full public
:08:04. > :08:11.inquiry. I will come to you now, sir. Does that satisfy some of the
:08:12. > :08:18.demands expressed this evening? Well, to be honest, I have no faith
:08:19. > :08:21.in the government currently as it sounds and they have said they spent
:08:22. > :08:27.10 million on refurbishing that building the burnt down, it doesn't
:08:28. > :08:31.look like they spent 10 million on that at all, I think people need to
:08:32. > :08:39.see receipts and proof of spending that money. As people who have been
:08:40. > :08:44.involved yourself, I'm sure this will have resonance with you. Thank
:08:45. > :08:49.you for joining us. Just going to move up the way because it appears
:08:50. > :08:56.riot police are coming. The government says every family will be
:08:57. > :08:57.rehoused. A lot of anger being voiced here on the streets of
:08:58. > :09:03.Westminster tonight. This afternoon the government
:09:04. > :09:08.responded to events. A little earlier, our reporter
:09:09. > :09:11.Wendy Hurrell spoke to the Minister for London, Greg Hands,
:09:12. > :09:19.and started by asking him why -- if he would feel comfortable for
:09:20. > :09:23.his family to be living in a tower block like Grenfell Tower.
:09:24. > :09:29.This is a developing situation and my sympathies go out to all of those
:09:30. > :09:34.affected, and praise for the armies in effort of the emergency services,
:09:35. > :09:37.fire brigade in particular. The Prime Minister has been to the site
:09:38. > :09:43.today to announce a further set of packages in terms of funding and
:09:44. > :09:48.other measures to try to find what happened here, and also to provide
:09:49. > :09:53.relief to those affected. Would you feel safe in one of those buildings?
:09:54. > :10:00.Hundreds of Londoners are in them this evening watching this. I live
:10:01. > :10:03.very close to a set of tower blocks myself but the most important thing
:10:04. > :10:08.we have to do is get to the bottom of this tragedy. We must find out
:10:09. > :10:11.what happened. There is an ongoing police led investigation as we
:10:12. > :10:17.speak. Police, fire and health and safety. We hope they will report in
:10:18. > :10:23.the coming days as to what the cause of the tragedy is. There is a huge
:10:24. > :10:26.community effort, volunteers everywhere, and they say they feel
:10:27. > :10:32.very let down by central government and the response has been woeful. I
:10:33. > :10:37.am much that is right. I represent Chelsea, part of the same borough. I
:10:38. > :10:41.am impressed by the incredible public response to the tragedy both
:10:42. > :10:46.in terms of donations and volunteers. People should check out
:10:47. > :10:52.online first, the latest situation on what goods and donations are
:10:53. > :11:00.needed to stop there is a lot of anger. How concerned are you about
:11:01. > :11:05.the situation on the ground? The important thing is not to get in the
:11:06. > :11:12.way of the emergency services, in terms of the investigation, for key
:11:13. > :11:18.government and council officers to make sure people are rehoused. Those
:11:19. > :11:21.who have been made homeless will be re-housed within three weeks in
:11:22. > :11:28.Kensington, Chelsea or neighbouring boroughs. What do you say to the
:11:29. > :11:30.people who are so angry? I understand the anger and concern and
:11:31. > :11:37.the need to have answers. Greg Hands there,
:11:38. > :11:42.speaking to Wendy Hurrell. Let's explore some of the safety
:11:43. > :11:55.concerns. Endless questions and few answers,
:11:56. > :11:58.that anger is palpable, but the questions have been raised for five
:11:59. > :12:04.years in online blogs. Posts highlighted what they claim was a
:12:05. > :12:07.general failure to inspect and maintain fire safety clement, and
:12:08. > :12:10.they blame on ongoing culture of negligence and say there is damning
:12:11. > :12:15.evidence of the poor safety record. One blog concludes it is a
:12:16. > :12:20.terrifying thought but only a catastrophic event will expose the
:12:21. > :12:24.ineptitude and incompetence. We were told that the cladding in these
:12:25. > :12:27.buildings are totally safe. Nigel lives in an identical tower block
:12:28. > :12:34.and he has raised similar concerns on behalf of residents. There have
:12:35. > :12:40.been a number of fires in previous years before the work started. This
:12:41. > :12:46.is a fire door. 165 flats in one of these buildings. There is a degree
:12:47. > :12:49.of overcrowding. Residents with an expanding family have had to utilise
:12:50. > :12:53.the broom cupboard to make it into a makeshift bedroom. There was a
:12:54. > :12:57.period of time, we don't know how long, that these were totally
:12:58. > :13:01.unusable because he is had broken into the building, due to low
:13:02. > :13:08.security, and stole all of the metal. Monica lives on the 19th
:13:09. > :13:17.floor and watched as the fire took hold. I can't sleep at night. I just
:13:18. > :13:22.think if anything happens nobody will come to save us. Residents
:13:23. > :13:24.there said they were raising concerns and you have been doing the
:13:25. > :13:32.same. Do you feel like they listen to you? No. There is so much
:13:33. > :13:40.contradiction and stop on hearing the fire alarm, leave the building
:13:41. > :13:45.by... There is no fire alarm. Attack fire using appliances provided. I
:13:46. > :13:47.have never seen the appliances. Firefighters have always worked with
:13:48. > :13:51.communities to clarify fire safety but the union says it has been
:13:52. > :13:55.scaled back. There is a misapprehension about firefighter
:13:56. > :13:59.work, it is not just putting out fires, there is a lot of fire safety
:14:00. > :14:05.work, prevention work, teaching people about fires in the community,
:14:06. > :14:12.doing inspections, home safety visits, and there is no doubt that
:14:13. > :14:15.the huge cuts visited upon the Fire Service, particularly in London,
:14:16. > :14:21.over the last ten years, have had an impact. There is suspicion that a
:14:22. > :14:25.public inquiry controlled by the government may not truly get to the
:14:26. > :14:29.bottom of what happened. We have to be very concerned as to why we are
:14:30. > :14:37.going down a public inquiry route when we have hundreds of-year-old
:14:38. > :14:41.system in place of an inquest with a High Court judge appointed as
:14:42. > :14:47.coroner dealing with it openly and transparently. It is important
:14:48. > :14:52.people are not left waiting for two or three or four years before they
:14:53. > :14:55.have answers. We need answers now and I am asking for an interim
:14:56. > :14:59.response to the inquiry this summer and to make sure local residents and
:15:00. > :15:05.families have copper representation and they are given legal
:15:06. > :15:08.representation. If there is any organisation or individual
:15:09. > :15:15.responsible they should be prosecuted. Theresa May visited the
:15:16. > :15:17.site earlier but left quickly as a crowd descended, shouting coward and
:15:18. > :15:47.shame on you. I am joined by the newly elected MP.
:15:48. > :15:51.A lot of people just want information. It changes day by day.
:15:52. > :15:58.The first day they wanted food and rest and a bit of love and on the
:15:59. > :16:02.second day it sunk in when we started hearing about fatalities.
:16:03. > :16:06.People were worried about their loved ones. You say they want
:16:07. > :16:13.information. What information can you give them? There is a dearth of
:16:14. > :16:18.information. Yes, and I think the issue lies squarely with the council
:16:19. > :16:22.who clearly have no emergency planning system at all. I find it
:16:23. > :16:28.appalling. Anything can happen at any time these days. Where is the
:16:29. > :16:33.emergency planning? We must have a proper emergency relief team here,
:16:34. > :16:36.coordinating. We have an incredible amount of volunteers, food, drink,
:16:37. > :16:45.everything else, and nobody knows what to do with it. The scale of the
:16:46. > :16:49.operation is massive. It is a lot to ask a council to predict something
:16:50. > :16:54.of this scale. All councils should have some kind of emergency planning
:16:55. > :16:59.and clearly they do not. The council have announced they're going to make
:17:00. > :17:02.certain key priorities, immediately rehouse some of the residents,
:17:03. > :17:09.providing emergency funding, they are doing something. We know about
:17:10. > :17:15.this issue about where they're to be allocated, moved to, and the word is
:17:16. > :17:20.local, and in housing terms local can mean London and that could
:17:21. > :17:25.anywhere. It could be two hours away from their homes. They have not
:17:26. > :17:28.committed to keeping them in the borough or a neighbouring borough,
:17:29. > :17:32.which is what people want. They need to be together. These people are
:17:33. > :17:38.traumatised. We have seen people taking out frustration at the town
:17:39. > :17:41.hall. What is your message to the people feeling frustrated and taking
:17:42. > :17:47.out their anger? You are absolutely right to be angry. Violence is never
:17:48. > :17:51.an answer. Turn their anger into real change and I will be with them
:17:52. > :17:56.all the time, every day talking to them trying to find out what is
:17:57. > :17:59.wrong. I have tried to contact the council and they're not even
:18:00. > :18:05.responding to their MP. I find that very disturbing. I am doing what I
:18:06. > :18:12.can with a small team. I cannot coordinate anything of this scale.
:18:13. > :18:15.People are still searching for missing loved ones.
:18:16. > :18:18.Our reporter Chris Slegg has spent the day with residents who survived
:18:19. > :18:23.the fire but are still looking for missing loved ones.
:18:24. > :18:41.The faces of some of the Grenfell Tower missing.
:18:42. > :18:43.Salah's brother-in-law Abdel, his wife Fozia, and their three
:18:44. > :19:05.They don't say, yes, we got them. I am so hopeful. He escaped from his
:19:06. > :19:12.home on the ninth floor. Along with his wife and two children. I wake up
:19:13. > :19:17.about two in the morning and I smelt strong plastic burning. I thought
:19:18. > :19:21.maybe something was in the cooker so I went to the kitchen and turned the
:19:22. > :19:26.light on and I saw flames outside the window in the kitchen. I live on
:19:27. > :19:35.the ninth floor. I thought something was wrong. I opened the kitchen
:19:36. > :19:38.window and there were flames and smoke so I closed it and I woke up
:19:39. > :19:50.my wife and children and said we had to get out. From the safety of the
:19:51. > :19:55.pavement, the phone and Abdelaziz. He was waving from his window. He
:19:56. > :20:06.said he couldn't get out because they told him to stay inside because
:20:07. > :20:11.it was safer. In the end, my son talked to his son and told them he
:20:12. > :20:17.needed to get out. He said they were trapped and there was too much
:20:18. > :20:26.smoke. Have you been given enough help in your search? No, we have not
:20:27. > :20:28.had a straight answer. We called their helpline. We don't know
:20:29. > :20:40.they're dead or in hospital. The agonising wait for news goes on.
:20:41. > :20:45.Of course, we have asked for an interview from Kensington and
:20:46. > :20:51.Chelsea town hall. Initially we were told we would have a leader of the
:20:52. > :20:55.council live on our programme. This afternoon they have pulled out of
:20:56. > :20:58.that interview so it is with regret that we cannot bring you that
:20:59. > :20:59.interview but we hope somebody will be available to speak to us this
:21:00. > :21:03.evening in our 10:30pm programme. Now, much has been said
:21:04. > :21:06.about the incredible response from the emergency services
:21:07. > :21:12.to this tragic event. Both at this fire and the London
:21:13. > :21:15.terrorist attack. Those who helped rescue and treat
:21:16. > :21:18.the victims have today been honoured in a special service at Southwark
:21:19. > :21:20.Cathedral. Arriving today at Southwark
:21:21. > :21:23.Cathedral, those at the front line The shadows of the oldest cathedral
:21:24. > :21:29.church building in London stretching out over Borough Market,
:21:30. > :21:31.the scene of mindless bloodshed It was here earlier in the week
:21:32. > :21:40.those who answered emergency calls on that Saturday night stood
:21:41. > :21:42.in silence, trying to make Lana treated the wounded
:21:43. > :21:45.and was heartened by It is lovely to see the people being
:21:46. > :21:57.able to get back into the market From what happened, you know,
:21:58. > :22:05.awful, awful things. They have banded together
:22:06. > :22:11.and they're back and fighting, Many of these emergency service
:22:12. > :22:15.staff were at the service today Modest-to-a-fault Lana said
:22:16. > :22:21.she was giving thanks for the public's help
:22:22. > :22:23.in the worst of circumstances. A lot of support
:22:24. > :22:25.between the services. They worked incredibly
:22:26. > :22:29.well together. The public themselves were fantastic
:22:30. > :22:31.in helping each other and keeping themselves safe and helping those
:22:32. > :22:33.that were injured. Restaurant owner Jack Appleby
:22:34. > :22:38.has a lot to thank He came face-to-face
:22:39. > :22:49.with the terrorists but survived. Fortunately we were OK
:22:50. > :23:06.but there were many people here affected and we are some
:23:07. > :23:08.of the lucky ones. This Imam was here to offer his
:23:09. > :23:15.support for anyone who had suffered. Atrocities have been
:23:16. > :23:17.committed by people so as an imam I thought
:23:18. > :23:21.it was my responsibility to come to speak to the people and let them
:23:22. > :23:24.know we stand with them All faiths came together
:23:25. > :23:27.at the cathedral, a chance for the bravest among us to be given
:23:28. > :23:31.a heartfelt thank you in the most And the number for those
:23:32. > :23:38.still missing loved ones, who have not yet been contacted
:23:39. > :23:54.by the police, is 0800 0961 233. That Alsop lies to people who may
:23:55. > :23:56.have been involved in this fire and have not been able to get in touch
:23:57. > :24:14.with their families. A slightly fresher feel and it has
:24:15. > :24:19.resulted in a little more cloud than in the last couple of days. More
:24:20. > :24:23.than we are going to see the weekend. This is set to build
:24:24. > :24:29.through the weekend. We could see temperatures peaking on Monday at
:24:30. > :24:35.32, the mid to high 80s in Fahrenheit. It gets a little fresher
:24:36. > :24:39.from Tuesday onwards. It is courtesy of high-pressure right across the
:24:40. > :24:44.country, not just the south-east corner. Through the night tonight
:24:45. > :24:47.you will notice it is good to be quite a warm night. Uncomfortable
:24:48. > :24:54.for sleeping and it will turn increasingly to mid through the
