:00:34. > :00:43.I had an independent electrician, in and tell me that my flat wasn't safe

:00:44. > :00:46.and that was the main reason why I chose to go to a hotel because they

:00:47. > :00:49.said to me this is a massive issue. Why London universities

:00:50. > :00:52.are demanding Government assurances Also tonight - the capital prepares

:00:53. > :00:58.to host World Athletics Championships and Usain Bolt's last

:00:59. > :01:03.appearance before he retires. Why one of London's oldest pie

:01:04. > :01:08.and mash shops is having Tonight a call for the public to be

:01:09. > :01:30.better educated over what to do London doctors say those who witness

:01:31. > :01:34.such incidents have a vital role to play in offering immediate first

:01:35. > :01:37.aid -- which could make a lasting It comes as a London borough

:01:38. > :01:43.announced it was introducing measures designed to make it harder

:01:44. > :01:57.for young people to buy acid. Video footage released by police

:01:58. > :02:05.today after an acid attack in Knightsbridge. They want to trace

:02:06. > :02:09.these two men on the Muppet. They threw a corrosive substance in the

:02:10. > :02:12.face of a pedestrian who suffered minor burns mainly because a

:02:13. > :02:21.passer-by dosed with water. It could have been much worse. He just

:02:22. > :02:28.started squeezing it... In June this man suffered a random acid attack

:02:29. > :02:32.and be scarred for life. Specialist units have seen and our subsequent

:02:33. > :02:36.acid attacks in recent months reflecting police figures are

:02:37. > :02:38.surgeons are calling for more public awareness. Witnesses can play a

:02:39. > :02:46.crucial role in minimising long-term damage. The danger is a relatively

:02:47. > :02:50.superficial I can be treated just with dressings but if the injury as

:02:51. > :02:54.damage deeper layers of his skin surgery will be necessary in the use

:02:55. > :02:57.of skin grafts and the need to inform the patient will be permanent

:02:58. > :03:00.marks of scanning becomes imperative. Quick first aid reduces

:03:01. > :03:28.the chances of that. Yes. This delivery driver was attacked

:03:29. > :03:37.three weeks ago. I was really scared. I didn't know what to do. I

:03:38. > :03:45.came running like crazy. Drivers have become so scared, one company

:03:46. > :03:49.is trialling helmet cameras. It is thought acid is being used because

:03:50. > :03:53.it is easy to get hold of and legislation as lists of Atlantic

:03:54. > :03:58.position of NA. Shopkeepers are signing up to a voluntary team to

:03:59. > :04:02.restrict restrict the sale and it is backed by the council. You'll be

:04:03. > :04:06.identification and refusing to sell these kind of products to anyone

:04:07. > :04:12.under the age of 21. They'll also be any suspicious sales. Police say

:04:13. > :04:17.there are far fewer acid attacks than the crime and people shouldn't

:04:18. > :04:21.be unduly alarmed. But being improperly prepared to help could

:04:22. > :04:24.minimise serious injuries. The Mac being properly prepared.

:04:25. > :04:30.We're with some of the capital's brave men and women as the Brigade

:04:31. > :04:55."Shoddy or incomplete" That's how residents living in a tower block

:04:56. > :04:58.in Camden have described urgent safety work that was carried

:04:59. > :05:00.out in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire.

:05:01. > :05:03.People living on the Chalcots Estate were among around three thousand

:05:04. > :05:05.people who were told to leave their homes six weeks ago.

:05:06. > :05:08.The work was carried out by Camden Council, but was signed

:05:09. > :05:10.off by Building Control at Lambeth and Westminster Councils.

:05:11. > :05:21.This woman lives on the 17th floor on the Chalcotts estate and

:05:22. > :05:26.assisting in hotel because she says she's too scared come back here. I

:05:27. > :05:30.have two young children aged one and four, I won't be able to relax, how

:05:31. > :05:35.am I going to be able to concentrate on their safety. And when to be a

:05:36. > :05:40.nervous wreck the whole time. After the building was evacuated the

:05:41. > :05:46.council added if fire door closer to her front door to make it safe.

:05:47. > :05:54.That's meant to make my door slams shut. You can put your hand through

:05:55. > :05:57.it. It's a bit smaller down here. Fire wardens have been placed on

:05:58. > :06:05.every floor of the towers but despite this fella who lives on the

:06:06. > :06:11.ground forces she doesn't feel safe is meant to be boxed them some sort

:06:12. > :06:14.of material, but it is clearly discovered and cardboard. As you can

:06:15. > :06:23.see the wires are just left stuck in. How does that make you feel? It

:06:24. > :06:28.makes me feel like like my landlord doesn't have my best interest of up.

:06:29. > :06:33.An independent fire safety expert has been carrying out his own

:06:34. > :06:37.assessment of some of the flats. The once been a cover-up. I have come

:06:38. > :06:42.across Fire beach after fire reached around gas mains between the flats

:06:43. > :06:48.and the gas rises. The fire protection isn't there. But more

:06:49. > :06:51.work still needs to be done, Camden Council insisted towers had been

:06:52. > :06:55.made safe. They have been sent off along the way by independent body

:06:56. > :07:00.control but crucially I didn't ask anyone to move back to those blocks

:07:01. > :07:03.until I'd heard from the fire brigade who are on site that they

:07:04. > :07:06.are safe to do so. The removal of the cladding from the blocks will

:07:07. > :07:08.begin in the coming months but restoring trust in the council could

:07:09. > :07:13.take even longer. Meanwhile we can get an update

:07:14. > :07:16.on a second round of large scale testing on cladding and insulation

:07:17. > :07:28.on high rises which has The Government took the same

:07:29. > :07:33.cladding that was used on Grenfell Tower and tested it by setting fire

:07:34. > :07:36.to it with different types of insulation and in the first two

:07:37. > :07:41.incidents does the tests had to be stopped after seven or eight minutes

:07:42. > :07:44.because the fire got so high so quickly even though the test was

:07:45. > :07:46.meant to last 40 minutes. No wonder the Government said the step of

:07:47. > :07:52.cladding should not have been used on any building at all. The former

:07:53. > :07:57.London Fire Commissioner and chair of the Government advisory panel

:07:58. > :07:59.says that he believes it is probable that landlords who owned buildings

:08:00. > :08:06.with this type of cladding around it will have to have them taken down.

:08:07. > :08:10.More than that, he also said it is no evidence to suggest that this

:08:11. > :08:14.type of cladding was ever tasted in this way before. That is despite

:08:15. > :08:17.Audi regulations saying all materials have to be studied and

:08:18. > :08:21.tested to find out whether they are safe or not. As of last week

:08:22. > :08:24.building regulations are now being reviewed and Sir Ken Knight says

:08:25. > :08:30.that is good chance of a number of them will have to change will stop.

:08:31. > :08:32.Well there's been much praise for the incredible

:08:33. > :08:33.bravery of our firefighters in recent months.

:08:34. > :08:36.The London Fire Brigade, which is on a recruitment drive,

:08:37. > :08:38.says Grenfell and the recent terror attacks have been an unprecedented

:08:39. > :08:44.And not indicative of a typical day in the life of a firefighter -

:08:45. > :08:50.It's been a year like no other for London's emergency services.

:08:51. > :08:53.Terror, tragedy, but underpinning their response

:08:54. > :09:02.We are watching Green Watch put through their paces on a training

:09:03. > :09:07.They've attended Grenfell Tower and the London terror attacks.

:09:08. > :09:10.The reality is their day-to-day involves more of this sort of thing

:09:11. > :09:17.This is not real life but at this moment in a real-life situation,

:09:18. > :09:19.you're about to put on your breathing apparatus

:09:20. > :09:22.and go into the unknown, what goes through your mind?

:09:23. > :09:24.We are constantly thinking about what we're going

:09:25. > :09:32.What we are looking for, how to find a way in and out.

:09:33. > :09:35.Is there a point where you go, I really don't fancy this today?

:09:36. > :09:38.We've been provided with the training.

:09:39. > :09:41.Personally I feel if someone is in there and we are looking

:09:42. > :09:43.for them there in a much worse position than we are.

:09:44. > :09:46.And our training and equipment will hopefully keep us safe.

:09:47. > :09:49.Now they want more of us to join them.

:09:50. > :09:51.There's natural wastage every year with retirements,

:09:52. > :09:53.promotions, people moving on, different career paths.

:09:54. > :09:57.There's always a churn of people coming through the organisation

:09:58. > :10:00.and today, now is a particular time when it is a deal

:10:01. > :10:05.Some of the greatest satisfaction is through some of the more mundane

:10:06. > :10:08.incidents that we attend to every day.

:10:09. > :10:12.In anything from someone who has been shut in a lift for a period

:10:13. > :10:15.of time and maybe has claustrophobia, it can make a huge

:10:16. > :10:39.The brigade hope a new TV documentary can encourage more

:10:40. > :10:43.people to enrol but it is perhaps a testament to our firefighters

:10:44. > :10:56.given recent events that more of them simply haven't walked away.

:10:57. > :10:59.The mother of Sally Anne Bowman - who was murdered in Croydon in 2005

:11:00. > :11:02.- says her daughter's remains have had to be exhumed...

:11:03. > :11:03.After her grave was repeatedly desecrated.

:11:04. > :11:06.Linda Bowman told a newspaper that "cruel people" had targeted

:11:07. > :11:09.the eighteen year old's burial place four times in six months.

:11:10. > :11:11.She said her daughter's remains were removed

:11:12. > :11:17.An investigation into the Croydon tram crash is likely to call

:11:18. > :11:21.To prevent serious accidents due to travelling at excessive

:11:22. > :11:28.Seven people died and fifty-one were injured in November last year.

:11:29. > :11:30.The Rail Accident Investigation Branch says it's also

:11:31. > :11:33.likely its final report will call for improvements to

:11:34. > :11:48.An organisation which represents five of London's top universities

:11:49. > :11:51.is calling on the Government to offer assurances to EU staff

:11:52. > :11:57.Our Brexit reporter Katharine Carpenter joins me now.

:11:58. > :12:01.the Uk's top universities - five of them are in London

:12:02. > :12:11.Between them they teach over 19,000 students from the EU and employ more

:12:12. > :12:21.members from the EU - but the Russell Group says it's

:12:22. > :12:24.finding it increasingly hard to recruit talent from the EU now

:12:25. > :12:39.The picture we are seeing at the moment is that some European staff

:12:40. > :12:41.choosing to leave the UK but equally as universities continue to recruit

:12:42. > :12:48.European stuff into their institutions. What we need is

:12:49. > :12:51.clarity from the Government as soon as possible because of the high

:12:52. > :12:57.levels of anxiety, people will be considering what the options are for

:12:58. > :12:58.the future in the UK, need to give uncertainty about that as soon as

:12:59. > :12:58.possible. Now there are ten

:12:59. > :13:00.areas the group says need clarity but its key demands

:13:01. > :13:03.are that the Government needs to make it easy and affordable

:13:04. > :13:05.for EU academics to apply for settled status without bogging

:13:06. > :13:12.them down in a lengthy And it wants those that already have

:13:13. > :13:16.residency to get settled The group also wants assurances that

:13:17. > :13:22.EU academics and students who leave the UK temporarily to study or carry

:13:23. > :13:25.out research won't lost settled And it wants the Government

:13:26. > :13:30.to ensure that new EU students arriving here over the next two

:13:31. > :13:33.years are able to stay on after their studies to get jobs

:13:34. > :13:35.and that their qualifications Last week at end of most recent

:13:36. > :13:41.round of talks David Davis said he was "pleased by the progress"

:13:42. > :13:43.that's been made but the negotiators published a table showing

:13:44. > :13:46.where they had common ground and where they disagreed and there's

:13:47. > :13:49.still a lot of talking to do. The Government has made it clear

:13:50. > :13:52.that no family with EU members will be split up post Brexit

:13:53. > :13:55.and it's said that all EU nationals will be able to apply

:13:56. > :13:58.for Settled Status once they've been But there are sticking points -

:13:59. > :14:06.one of the main ones being the role Today the Government reiterated

:14:07. > :14:09.that it was committed to recruiting the brightest and the best

:14:10. > :14:12.into higher education and said it will ensure that any new process

:14:13. > :14:14.for applying to live and work here would be as streamlined

:14:15. > :14:25.and user-friendly as possible. Preparing for another big sporting

:14:26. > :14:29.event at the Olympic stadium - as London gets ready to host

:14:30. > :14:35.the World Athletics championships. Meanwhile England Women's football

:14:36. > :14:38.team are now the favourites to win the European Championships -

:14:39. > :14:41.I'm with some of the home fans It's the eve - of one

:14:42. > :14:58.the biggest sporting events at the Olympic Stadium

:14:59. > :15:00.since the 2012 Games. And as the capital gets ready

:15:01. > :15:02.to host the World Athletics Championships Chris Slegg

:15:03. > :15:04.is at the Queen Elizabeth And of course the fastest man

:15:05. > :15:24.on the planet appearing for the last You saying about telly-mac Bolt

:15:25. > :15:26.preparing for the BA Gordon goodbye and there is a new sense of the

:15:27. > :15:31.scale of these championships because we have lists and tone who have come

:15:32. > :15:34.down to see the stadium and day before anything begins. We had to

:15:35. > :15:40.queue for an hour for our accreditation, so many journalists

:15:41. > :15:43.here. For all of its problems with doping scandals and Russia still

:15:44. > :15:48.banned, athletics remained a sport with huge global appeal. Let's hear

:15:49. > :15:49.from some of the stars of the show starting with the greatest of them

:15:50. > :15:57.starting with the greatest of them all.

:15:58. > :16:04.The London crowd really made me know what it means to be supported.

:16:05. > :16:06.They really came out every day and showed their love

:16:07. > :16:11.We put on this vest and we run for people all over the country,

:16:12. > :16:14.all over the world and we kind of do them proud.

:16:15. > :16:17.And to have that home advantage in the last 40 of the 200,

:16:18. > :16:23.It is once-in-a-lifetime to have the Olympics right

:16:24. > :16:26.on your doorstep and then you come back years later and it is

:16:27. > :16:38.You know what, I'm going to end it at that track.

:16:39. > :16:45.The last major championships for more fire. Any man who grew up in

:16:46. > :16:50.Teddington yet another golden double Coric the UK terror threat level

:16:51. > :16:53.remains at severe and has been a visible Metropolitan Police presence

:16:54. > :16:56.here today put them in handing out leaflets, talking to members of the

:16:57. > :16:59.public and telling them about what they are going to be doing to keep

:17:00. > :17:02.people safe. I been speaking to some of those members of the public

:17:03. > :17:06.asking them whether that in fact does reassure them or does it rather

:17:07. > :17:16.leave them more concerned? Not at all. You can experience it and not

:17:17. > :17:20.have to worry about a few individuals that want to cause

:17:21. > :17:23.chaos. Security should be taped because of what has been happening

:17:24. > :17:27.for the past few months, nothing is unexpected. Ensure should bring lots

:17:28. > :17:30.of stuff behind the scenes that often people don't realise so I'm

:17:31. > :17:36.sure if you didn't get on and enjoy what is going on the new district

:17:37. > :17:40.lives. London of course well used to big events. This is not on the scale

:17:41. > :17:43.of the Olympics but there will be close to 700,000 fancier untended

:17:44. > :17:48.ticket of days and two sessions every day. That means 60,000 people

:17:49. > :17:52.arriving, many going home and a new wave of arrivals and that will bring

:17:53. > :17:58.its own pressures for the police and security services. What a sporting

:17:59. > :18:22.spectacle it will be. Thank you. The Shadow Home Secretary and MP

:18:23. > :18:25.for Hackney says that work needs to be done to rebuild trust

:18:26. > :18:27.between police and Diane Abbot's comments come

:18:28. > :18:30.after forensic analysis revealed that 20-year-old Rashan Charles had

:18:31. > :18:39.NOT swallowed a controlled substance The Independent Police Complaints

:18:40. > :18:44.Commission was this investigation following Rashan's death in July and

:18:45. > :18:47.the evidence so far suggest that when he was detained by a

:18:48. > :18:51.Metropolitan Police officer had followed him on foot after an

:18:52. > :18:55.earlier attempt to stop his vehicle, the officer restrained him with the

:18:56. > :18:58.help of a member of the public he was handcuffed and after she was

:18:59. > :19:02.detained at attempts were made to remove an object from his mouth foot

:19:03. > :19:11.and it was at this point his condition deteriorated and he later

:19:12. > :19:15.died. The ceiling of the IGCC has said this the object that was

:19:16. > :19:20.removed from the throat of Rashan consisted of a mixture of

:19:21. > :19:30.paracetamol and caffeine wrapped in plastic according to forensic

:19:31. > :19:32.analysis and the reason this has been released and is given the

:19:33. > :19:40.inflammatory nature of some ongoing speculation.

:19:41. > :19:43.Food trends come and go - but whether it's to your taste,

:19:44. > :19:45.the traditional pie and mash has weathered many a culinary storm.

:19:46. > :19:52.Because after more than a hundred years in business one

:19:53. > :19:54.of the capital's oldest pie shops, based in Islington,

:19:55. > :19:57.is about to close saying it can't afford increased business rates

:19:58. > :20:11.Nicola Ford reports on the end of an era.

:20:12. > :20:20.It's delicious. It's a lunchtime rush, but customers had better be

:20:21. > :20:31.quick as the shop is due to close. It is a part of old England. I'm a

:20:32. > :20:34.Tate knows that is 80 years pie and mash was why don't think they should

:20:35. > :20:38.close. The owners Sadie Streisand business routes are to blame Britain

:20:39. > :20:43.isn't in rates have gone ravaged by 45%, something causing local

:20:44. > :20:46.business groups concerned. I think this is the final nail in the coffin

:20:47. > :20:49.for the value valued and unique present business and for me what a

:20:50. > :20:53.sad is that this is the bloodline of the community. Chapel market, the

:20:54. > :20:59.independent businesses here create a sense of community. It has been just

:21:00. > :21:04.as 9011. The family run business and are certainly part of local history.

:21:05. > :21:07.Even part of the knowledge, the test that taxi drivers take to show they

:21:08. > :21:12.know the London landmarks. And for market traders it is part of isn't

:21:13. > :21:18.in the's community that might be on its way out. There is a focal point

:21:19. > :21:23.of people come to visit, families come down and it is part present in.

:21:24. > :21:28.It always has been unwanted callers it is another small part of a deal

:21:29. > :21:35.that is breaking up. Anyone moving into the borough has to have money

:21:36. > :21:42.known which is fine but they're not pie and mash Kenya people, not

:21:43. > :21:50.market people. Another question is been opened and Essex but what about

:21:51. > :21:53.the younger generation? Is my first time, this was recommended to me,

:21:54. > :22:01.usually go down the road was looking here and it. The council are happy

:22:02. > :22:04.to discuss with the owner that they can help to keep the shop open and

:22:05. > :22:06.would be extremely sorry to see it close. As it stands, the last I will

:22:07. > :22:15.be served at the end of the year. But tonight - could the England

:22:16. > :22:17.women's football team be on the verge of winning

:22:18. > :22:19.their first major tournament? Victory this evening

:22:20. > :22:21.sees them through to They're certainly not short of home

:22:22. > :22:25.support as Emma Jones found out a little earlier with some fans

:22:26. > :22:38.in Hackney including If you can't be at the amount

:22:39. > :22:42.itself, not a bad excuse to be any London borough genially team on foot

:22:43. > :22:47.of that is exactly what a local women's football team here in

:22:48. > :22:49.Hackney have arranged. They also invented a rather special

:22:50. > :22:53.cheerleader in this shape of England and Chelsea defender Claire

:23:07. > :23:09.today and win the game. The Netherlands are the hosts, they been

:24:12. > :24:15.them on. With the last couple of games you and the atmosphere has

:24:16. > :24:18.been amazing, really proud of them. The thing that are successful they

:24:19. > :24:23.will be playing anything on Sunday and sure this part will be packed

:24:27. > :24:33.Time now for a check on the weather - Ben Rich has joined us.

:24:34. > :24:42.The Netherlands not was warm as it is for the something new. 40 degrees

:24:43. > :24:45.in Europe. Nothing like that for us. The decidedly cool fuel which is

:24:46. > :24:50.what we take this into tomorrow for the most part. Today looking back at

:24:51. > :24:54.some of the weather watcher pictures are some patchy cloud and sunny

:24:55. > :24:57.spells and it wasn't a deluge of yesterday and that is because we

:24:58. > :25:02.didn't see too many showers. Beaded picture shows not too many showers

:25:03. > :25:06.and those that did turn up when through pretty quickly because we

:25:07. > :25:10.had a strong and gusty wind. Through this evening we continue with that

:25:11. > :25:14.theme, not too many showers, a lot of dry weather and clear spells the

:25:15. > :25:19.wind easing down a little bit and temperatures overnight around 13 to

:25:20. > :25:23.15 degrees. Tomorrow not a bad looking day, still the chance you

:25:24. > :25:26.could see one or two showers that any that do turn up should be fairly

:25:27. > :25:32.late and as you can see from the map most places will stay dry. With some

:25:33. > :25:34.spells of sunshine. A fairly cool fuel, actually with lighter winds

:25:35. > :25:39.and some sunshine this teachers would do too badly, some spot in the

:25:40. > :25:45.centre of town could get up to around 24 degrees. Stays mostly fine

:25:46. > :25:50.with the small chance of a shower during Friday evening. Into the

:25:51. > :25:52.start of the weekend, stranded between weather systems, high

:25:53. > :25:55.pressure to the south-west tries to take control, we still have a low

:25:56. > :25:59.pressure up to the north-east and that means on Saturday we could

:26:00. > :26:04.still see some showers, a mixture of sunshine and showers. By Sunday

:26:05. > :26:07.quickly to start, it would feel much like summer but at least through the

:26:08. > :26:11.day it should be mostly dry with some spells of sunshine is. Here is

:26:12. > :26:16.a bit more detail. Saturday the showers coming and going, fairly

:26:17. > :26:22.busy at times with lengthy sunny spells, template is up to around 19

:26:23. > :26:26.or 20. For Sunday, quite cool and fresh is to start with sunny spells

:26:27. > :26:29.and perhaps a bit more cloud, textures eventually recovering

:26:30. > :26:34.through the afternoon into the teens and maybe eventually reaching the

:26:35. > :26:39.low 20s. Here outlooks in summary, if you showers at times, generally

:26:40. > :26:42.by Sunday and through the next few days a fairly cool fuel.
