:00:11. > :00:14.I'm Alice Bhandhukravi for the news where you are.

:00:15. > :00:17.As we've been hearing, Notting Hill Carnival

:00:18. > :00:20.is drawing to a close shortly and, overall, it's been a successful

:00:21. > :00:23.event, despite heightened concerns over security.

:00:24. > :00:28.Latest police figures suggest arrests are down on last year.

:00:29. > :00:30.And, for the second day running, respects were paid

:00:31. > :00:33.to the victims of Grenfell Tower, as Dan Freedman reports.

:00:34. > :00:42.It is carnival day two, and we are stowaways on board one

:00:43. > :00:54.We are on board Smoky Joe's Roadshow float.

:00:55. > :00:56.The noise is deafening, the bass is shaking my chest.

:00:57. > :01:02.But on the ground amongst the sequins is a security

:01:03. > :01:04.challenge heightened by

:01:05. > :01:06.an unprecedented year of terror in London.

:01:07. > :01:15.Things are developing, and so are our responses

:01:16. > :01:18.to the nature and extent of any possible threat.

:01:19. > :01:20.Clearly, we are using technology to support us

:01:21. > :01:26.And so we will use anything that is lawful

:01:27. > :01:30.and proportionate to help us keep communities safe.

:01:31. > :01:34.So far, arrests are down compared to last year.

:01:35. > :01:40.Anything could happen to anyone, anywhere.

:01:41. > :01:43.That is what terrorists want to do, be inside and make you afraid,

:01:44. > :01:51.We have our roots in the West Indies,

:01:52. > :01:56.whatever, but we see it as we are all one.

:01:57. > :02:01.Once again, today, at 3pm, the sound systems

:02:02. > :02:07.were silenced as a mark of respect for the victims of Grenfell.

:02:08. > :02:11.If you judge a community on how it responds in the

:02:12. > :02:14.face of terror and tragedy, then this community is passing that test

:02:15. > :02:27.Believe it or not, this is what Carnival looks like when it is

:02:28. > :02:31.coming to an end, quite a name down. There are literally thousands of

:02:32. > :02:37.people on the streets. We have had more than 1 million people here

:02:38. > :02:42.across the weekend. It is not even the world's biggest, that accolade

:02:43. > :02:47.goes to Rio. I have to say the weather here today, it has been

:02:48. > :02:50.warmer than Brazil. That is why the London Ambulance Service has been

:02:51. > :02:58.telling everyone to keep drinking as much water as possible. We have seen

:02:59. > :03:02.some incidences of people being carried to the ambulance and

:03:03. > :03:06.emergency service tents, clearly needing attention.

:03:07. > :03:11.Amidst the colour and costumes, the most poignant moment and memorable

:03:12. > :03:16.moment so far of Carnival 2017, when the sound systems quietened for a

:03:17. > :03:25.minute on both days at 3pm, and people turned their mind to the

:03:26. > :03:27.victims of them fell tower just half a mile from here.

:03:28. > :03:30.A teenage boy has died at the Reading Music Festival.

:03:31. > :03:32.Paramedics were called to a tent in one of the campsites,

:03:33. > :03:34.but the 17 year-old was already dead.

:03:35. > :03:39.Police say his death is being treated as "unexplained".

:03:40. > :03:41.Next, it's a martial art you may not have heard of.

:03:42. > :03:43.Gatka is combat training followed by Sikhs.

:03:44. > :03:45.Although traditionally fought with a sword, nowadays,

:03:46. > :03:50.competitions are less danberous, using wooden sticks to spar.

:03:51. > :03:52.Today, the national championships were held in Chigwell.

:03:53. > :04:02.In the red corner, and the blue, this is the Gatka UK Championship,

:04:03. > :04:11.Yes, gatka was introduced to the Sikh fold by the sixth

:04:12. > :04:14.This also meant not just physically or aggressively,

:04:15. > :04:16.but humbleness without service to mankind, without meditation,

:04:17. > :04:17.without forgiveness, without compassion, you can't

:04:18. > :04:26.The aim is to land the most hits on your opponent, and defend

:04:27. > :04:33.Hundreds of years old, it came to the UK 25 years ago.

:04:34. > :04:36.Now, there are thousands of practitioners, or gatka badge,

:04:37. > :04:42.It has taught us a lot of discipline, commitment.

:04:43. > :04:45.We made lots of friends while being here.

:04:46. > :04:51.It helps them stay connected to their roots.

:04:52. > :04:53.And the values that their parents would have taught us.

:04:54. > :05:04.Before I would look down on the floor.

:05:05. > :05:08.Now I can look them in the eye and have a proper conversation.

:05:09. > :05:11.It is watched over by the new MP for Slough, also president

:05:12. > :05:17.In other parts of the world, people looked to London for leadership.

:05:18. > :05:25.That is why we are holding this for the second year out

:05:26. > :05:27.of five, we have held the championship in London.

:05:28. > :05:30.I am hoping this annual event will go from strength to strength.

:05:31. > :05:32.And maybe the gatka champion of tomorrow

:05:33. > :05:48.We have been lucky with the glorious weather.

:05:49. > :05:52.I had given up in August, but a beautiful day.

:05:53. > :05:56.Now, a lovely evening as well with warm sunshine.

:05:57. > :06:00.Through the night, we will see some cloud in Kent and Sussex and Thames

:06:01. > :06:05.Estuary. Even one or two showers in the early

:06:06. > :06:09.hours, very warm, 17. More cloud to start, mist patches

:06:10. > :06:13.first thing. The afternoon brings more warm

:06:14. > :06:18.sunshine but not as hot as today. The mid-20s. Not so on Wednesday. A

:06:19. > :06:21.good deal fresher, rain moving up into the afternoon.

:06:22. > :06:24.We're back later in the Ten O'Clock News.

:06:25. > :06:46.The weather today has been pretty warm. Temperatures have got up to 28

:06:47. > :06:57.Celsius. It is the warmest late August bank

:06:58. > :07:01.holiday on record. We are just checking that. It was funny across a

:07:02. > :07:06.lot of the country but not everywhere. These are the

:07:07. > :07:11.temperatures at eight o'clock. Still 25 degrees in London. That shows how

:07:12. > :07:17.warm the areas across the UK. It will stay warm across England and

:07:18. > :07:22.Wales. To the north of this weather front which will bring some spots of

:07:23. > :07:28.rain to Yorkshire and Wales, it is a lot fresher with the air coming of

:07:29. > :07:29.the ocean. Tomorrow, a lot more cloud around
