0:00:14 > 0:00:16Good evening and welcome to BBC London News.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17I'm Claudia-Liza Armah.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19With hundreds of thousands of people heading

0:00:19 > 0:00:21into central London for this year's New Year Eve celebrations,

0:00:21 > 0:00:23the Met police has confirmed there will be additional armed

0:00:23 > 0:00:27officers on patrol.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30The enhanced security comes after a review following this

0:00:30 > 0:00:30year's terror attacks.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33And it's not just Scotland Yard, the London Ambulance Service is also

0:00:33 > 0:00:35preparing for its busiest night of the year.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37With the latest, let's speak to Frankie McCamley,

0:00:37 > 0:00:38who is on Embankment tonight.

0:00:38 > 0:00:45Security being ramped up for Sunday night's celebrations.

0:00:45 > 0:00:51Yes, absolutely. We've seen barriers being put awe longside the pavements

0:00:51 > 0:00:54-- alongside the pavements. We've been speaking to police who say

0:00:54 > 0:00:57there will be extra armed officers out for Sunday night's fireworks,

0:00:57 > 0:01:01which takes place on barges in the middle of the Thames. It's not just

0:01:01 > 0:01:05a big operation for the event organisers. It's also a huge amount

0:01:05 > 0:01:09of planning for security and emergency services, who have spent

0:01:09 > 0:01:15months planning for Sunday. Last year's fireworks display,

0:01:15 > 0:01:20watched by thousands in the capital, all lining the Thames to take in the

0:01:20 > 0:01:24sights and sounds. It's one of the biggest events of the year, with

0:01:24 > 0:01:28preparations well under way. But with so many descending on one area,

0:01:28 > 0:01:32security needs to be stepped up. This year, police say a number of

0:01:32 > 0:01:36protection measures are being put in place. What people see as they come

0:01:36 > 0:01:40into the footprint, they will see an effective search and secure regime.

0:01:40 > 0:01:45They'll see physical barriers. They will see uniformed police officers.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49They will see visible uniformed private security contractors. What

0:01:49 > 0:01:54they won't see is a number of covert resources that are also working

0:01:54 > 0:01:58alongside us to keep this event safe. The Met says it's learned

0:01:58 > 0:02:01lesson that's year, following four major terror incidents in the city,

0:02:01 > 0:02:08which left 14 people dead and dozens more injured. Elsewhere, other

0:02:08 > 0:02:12emergency services are stepping things up for the big event. For

0:02:12 > 0:02:15London Ambulance service, New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the

0:02:15 > 0:02:18year. Dozens of extra staff are going to be on shift in this call

0:02:18 > 0:02:24centre. Tear expecting to take around 2,000 extra calls.Everybody

0:02:24 > 0:02:41likes to party on New Year's Eve. Simple

0:02:41 > 0:02:44We want you to be healthy. We want you to have a great night, not a

0:02:44 > 0:02:48night in the back of an ambulance or emergency department. For those

0:02:48 > 0:02:51needing medical help attending the display, the advice is not to call

0:02:51 > 0:02:56999 and find one of nine St John Ambulance treatment centres in the

0:02:56 > 0:03:00area, including one at Westminster Abbey, another an embankment station

0:03:00 > 0:03:03and although police say they have no intelligence of a planned attack,

0:03:03 > 0:03:07people are being urged to stay vigilant but most importantly, enjoy

0:03:07 > 0:03:11the show.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13A three-year-old has been seriously injured in a collision

0:03:13 > 0:03:15with a car in north London.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17The boy was hurt while walking on Shoot-Up-Hill

0:03:17 > 0:03:20in Cricklewood around 3pm yesterday.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23He is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25The Met's Serious Collision Investigation

0:03:25 > 0:03:29is appealing for witnesses.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32The driver did stop at the scene but no arrests have been made.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34An investigation into how Surrey Police handled allegations

0:03:34 > 0:03:37of sexual offences by Jimmy Savile has concluded the Force

0:03:37 > 0:03:39did act appropriately.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43The police watchdog had been asked to look into whether officers

0:03:43 > 0:03:45took statements made by several victims seriously.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47They had told detectives the TV entertainer had abused girls

0:03:47 > 0:03:52at Duncroft School in Staines during the 1970s.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Surrey Police says it accepts there are things which should have

0:03:54 > 0:03:57been done differently in its 2007 investigation and has

0:03:57 > 0:04:03since implemented changes.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Heartbroken friends of a woman found murdered in North London have

0:04:06 > 0:04:09described her as a kind, fun and life-loving person.

0:04:21 > 0:04:27And Ayshea, we're finding out more about Julie?

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Yes, that's right. Much of this park has been closed for the past few

0:04:31 > 0:04:36days as police forensics search for clues. Her body was found here.

0:04:36 > 0:04:42She'd been murdered a few days ago. Police believe, it was found near an

0:04:42 > 0:04:48out building in a part of the park. Postmortem has shown she was stabbed

0:04:48 > 0:04:52in the stomach and sustained a head injury. Police believe the last time

0:04:52 > 0:04:57she had been seen alive was when she finished her shift at a local pub in

0:04:57 > 0:05:03Camden on Christmas eve. She then was due to come home to her flat

0:05:03 > 0:05:07near here in Finsbury Park and then go on to friends in Enfield for

0:05:31 > 0:05:35they need to go about their business, just be aware of their

0:05:35 > 0:05:40environment and if they have any - you know come across suspicious

0:05:40 > 0:05:46incidents please contact us. Flowers laid here by friends, here

0:05:46 > 0:05:51at the park, describe her as a kind and friendly soul. Anyone with any

0:05:51 > 0:06:00information should contact the police on 101 or 0le 00, 555 111. So

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Much of the Home Counties was under a weather warning today

0:06:09 > 0:06:10for strong winds and heavy rain.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13Parts of Surrey have been submerged, as you can see from these pictures.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17trapping one driver, who had to be towed.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20While a large van overturned following a crash on the M25

0:06:20 > 0:06:27between Junction 8 and 9 near Reigate, causing long delays.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Staying with the weather, and I'm afraid to say

0:06:29 > 0:06:31there is more rain on the way.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Here's the forecast with Elizabeth Rizzini.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Hello, good evening. There were brighter spells around at times

0:06:38 > 0:06:43today. But a lot of wet weather too. There's more rain in the forecast

0:06:43 > 0:06:47over the course of the weekend. Most of this rain will fall by night.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50It's not a bad looking weekend of weather. Certainly it's mild for

0:06:50 > 0:06:54this time of year. Now overnight tonight, temperatures drop away at

0:06:54 > 0:06:57first and we'll see clear skies for a time. The cloud amounts will

0:06:57 > 0:06:59increase, then we get the rain sweeping in from the south-west.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Some of it is heavy at times. Mostly clearing into tomorrow morning and a

0:07:03 > 0:07:08mild start to the day. Nine or ten degrees Celsius. Bit of a damp start

0:07:08 > 0:07:11for north-eastern Home Counties. That cloud should clear and we'll

0:07:11 > 0:07:14get brighter spells developing. The best of the sunshine tomorrow,

0:07:14 > 0:07:19probably towards northern Home Counties. But it will feel mild,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23highs of 13 Celsius. A brisk westerly wind blowing. Breezy

0:07:23 > 0:07:27throughout. Clouding over by the end of the day. Wet and windy on

0:07:27 > 0:07:51Saturday night.
